In the film, Special Forces commando Parker (Jessica Alba) is on active duty overseas when she gets called back to her hometown with the tragic news that her father has suddenly died.
Now the owner of the family bar, Parker reconnects with her former boyfriend-turned-sheriff Jesse (Mark Webber), his hot-tempered brother Elvis (Jake Weary), and their powerful father Senator Swann (Anthony Michael Hall) as she looks to understand what actually happened to her dad.

Adapting manga/anime to live-action almost always feels like a fool's errand. Many have tried, few have succeeded, many more don't even make it to the big screen. One adaptation cast into development hell several times is Naoki Urasawa's thriller "Monster."
"Monster" begins in Germany during 1986, shortly before East/West reunification. Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese immigrant, is a top neurosurgeon in Düsseldorf. Humble and good-hearted, the doctor actually cares about his patients' well-being, not just money and prestige. Ordered by Hospital Director Heinemann to let 10-year-old orphan Johan Liebert die and save a local politician instead, Tenma disobeys. He saves the boy, but it costs him his engagement (to Heinemann's venal daughter Eva) and his professional future. That is, until Heinemann is poisoned while Johan disappears.
In 1995, Tenma learns Johan grew up to be a prolific serial killer; he killed his adoptive parents, Heinemann, and many more since.

David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” opened for general audiences this weekend without exactly lighting up the box office, which no one expected it to do.
The filmography of Cronenberg has been one that has brought unadulterated respect from cinephiles, while never having the populist appeal to breakout into huge commercial translations or awards attention. The honorary Oscar is the perfect tool for such a distinction.
Despite telling an ambitious allegory of art, autism, global warming, awards season, relationships and perhaps a dozen others that can be picked out upon multiple viewings, “Crimes of the Future” is far too cerebral for mainstream awards attention.
