Storyline

The world is astounded when Willy Wonka, for years a recluse in his factory, announces that five lucky people will be given a tour of the factory, shown all the secrets of his amazing candy, and one will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate. Nobody wants the prize more than young Charlie, but as his family is so poor that buying even one bar of chocolate is a treat, buying enough bars to find one of the five golden tickets is unlikely in the extreme. But in movieland, magic can happen. Charlie, along with four somewhat odious other children, get the chance of a lifetime and a tour of the factory. Along the way, mild disasters befall each of the odious children, but can Charlie beat the odds and grab the brass ring? Written by Rick Munoz <rick.munoz@his.com>

Trivia

Contrary to popular belief, Fred Astaire wasn't ever considered to play Willy Wonka. According to director Mel Stuart's book "Pure Imagination: The Making of Willy Wonka", Fred expressed interest in playing the eccentric chocolatier, but that wasn't brought to either Stuart or producer David L. Wolper's attention. Just as well, because, as Stuart says in his book, he didn't conceive of Willy Wonka as a 72-year-old man, which happened to be what Astaire was at the time. See more »

Goofs

Revealing mistakes: When Augustus is stuck in the chocolate river pipe, Willy Wonka states that the pressure of the chocolate behind him will eventually push Augustus through. When Augustus is eventually pushed up the pipe, the chocolate behind him, which should be moving at the same rate that Augustus shot up, is moving at a much slower rate. See more »

Quotes

Children: What is it?
Bill, candy store owner: This is called a Scrumpdiddlyumptious Bar.
