Morales’ death was announced by Sirius Xm’s Rock the Bells radio, where he hosted and DJ’d. “The Rock The Bells family is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Mark ‘Prince Markie Dee’ Morales earlier today. That voice and his presence can never be replaced. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones,” the station said via Twitter.
Born in Brooklyn in 1968, Morales co-founded what would become The Fat Boys as the Disco 3 with his friends Damon “Kool Rock-Ski” Wimbley and Darren “Buff Love” Robinson. Indie Sales has acquired Constance Meyer’s feature debut “Misfit,” a drama-comedy headlined by Gérard Depardieu and Déborah Lukumuena, the rising star of Houda Benyamina’s “Divines.”
Shot in Paris, the film revolves around George, an aging and lonely film star in decline, and Aïssa, a semi-pro wrestler earning a living as a security officer. When Aïssa is hired to temporarily replace George’s bodyguard, a singular bond between them takes hold. Despite their differences, George and Aïssa are more similar than they thought initially.
Indie Sales will launch international sales on “Misfit” at UniFrance’s Rendez-Vous With French Cinema, which kicks off Jan. 13.
Now in post, “Misfit” is produced by Isabelle Madelaine with her Paris-based outfit Dharamsala, whose credits include Alice Winocour’s “Proxima” and Claire Burger’s “Real Love.”

Betty Wright, an influential singer whose soulful voice won her a Grammy Award for Where Is The Love, has died at age 66. No cause of death was revealed by her niece, who confirmed her death.
Beyond performing, Wright operated her own record label, Mrs. B Records, and her own publishing company, Miami Spice.
Born Bessie Regina Norris in Miami, Florida, in December 1953, Wright began singing gospel music. She was 18 years old when she first hit the charts with the 1971 song Clean Up Woman, which became her signature song. She later recorded the chart hits No Pain (No Gain) and Mother Wit, achieving a gold record for the latter on her own label.
Singer Chaka Khan had asked for prayers for Wright earlier this month. Wright was still an influence, being referenced as late as March in the TV show Unsung by DJ Khaled and Lil Wayne for her song, Tonight Is the Tonight.

At that point, McDonald was best known for his studio work with Steely Dan, and the group had no idea he was a brilliant songwriter until he showed them a demo for “Takin’ It to the Streets,” which quickly became the title for their sixth studio...

Grief can take hold of even the strongest people and refuse to let go. It’s why they describe it as a “process.” Maris Curran’s “Five Nights In Maine” takes this idea to heart as it follows Sherwin (David Oyelowo), a recent widower who lost his wife Fiona (Hani Furstenberg) in a car accident. Stricken by grief and depression, he travels to a remote corner of Maine to see Fiona’s cancer-stricken mother Lucinda (Dianne Wiest) who’s being taken care of by caring nurse Ann (Rosie Perez). Tensions run high as both Sherwin and Lucinda deal with the tragedy, and struggle to come to terms with their feelings towards each other and Fiona. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below featuring Sherwin and Ann discussing the loss.

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1993...
What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.
Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.
But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.

New York — To find their Mr. Darcy, the Guthrie Theater in Minnesota has turned to a Mad Man.
Vincent Kartheiser, who plays the malcontent Pete Campbell on AMC's "Mad Men," will star this summer in a new Guthrie production of "Pride and Prejudice" as the brooding hero of Jane Austen's most famous novel.
"It's interesting playing a character that people have such strong feelings about before I've even begun playing him," he said Friday by phone from Los Angeles. "I don't have a lot of experience playing famous characters and it's an interesting expectation that lays on my head."
Kartheiser is a native of Minneapolis and first appeared at the Guthrie in 1986 at age 7 as Tiny Tim in "A Christmas Carol." He returned to play small roles in the company's 1990 productions of "Henry V" and "Henry IV."
"I think my biggest scene I was being carried around dead," he joked.

Wednesday night's "American Idol" was supposed to be all about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But leave it to Jimmy Iovine's sleepwalking producers and Nigel Lythgoe's showbiz pizzazz to make it rock softer than an Air Supply acoustic album.
That's not to say the top nine of "American Idol X: Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain" didn't give it their all and then some. This may go down as the sweatiest "Idol" episode ever. Did Idolland's air conditioning break, or is there a fire within these contestants causing them to look like James Brown on Pcp?
As an added challenge this week, producers handicapped the girls by forcing them to wear Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. collection of leopard-print diapers and silk tube-top jumpsuits. I guess they really don't want the Season 10 "Idol" to have a vagina. Paging Gloria Steinem!

Subject: Marisa Tomei, 46-year old American Actress
Date of Assessment: March 16, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Sensuality, pluckiness, longevity
Negative Buzzwords: The Academy, romcoms
The Case: Just last week, I discussed how Gary Oldman has suffered no adverse effects after experiencing a career of neglect at the hands of The Academy. Naturally, Gary doesn't give much of a shit whether or not he's receiving relatively worthless reinforcement from his fellow actors; and in this week's assessment, we explore the simple notion that an Oscar can actually hurt one's career prospects.
Very early on in Marisa Tomei's career (following stints on "As the World Turns" and "A Different World" as well as bit roles in a few negligible feature films), the actress received a substantial boost after winning the 1992 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny. Now, whether or not she deserved the award is a matter of personal opinion,...

Take one part "Middle Men" (product launches in the age of '90s excess) and two parts "Untamed Heart" (young love with an expiration date) and you've got Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway's "Love and Other Drugs."
At least that's what you get from the first of two trailers for the upcoming film, which emphasizes Gyllenhaal's high-rolling lifestyle as a pharmaceutical sales rep at the dawn of Viagra before totally switching gears and divulging that love interest Hathaway is secretly ailing from Parkinson's disease. It's all very melodramatic.
And then there's a second trailer, with its happy-go-lucky "Just Like Heaven" soundtrack that pitches the movie as rom-com about a player changed by love. No mention of illness, apart from a few subtle shots of Gyllenhaal looking deeply serious in a hospital, just a lot of pop music.

Ellen Lewis on Michael ShannonWhen I was asked to write about an actor I love, Michael Shannon immediately jumped into my mind. It probably stems from the fact that I'm from Chicago, where Michael lived and worked for many years. In 1998 Paula Muzik, an agent in Chicago, called to tell me about Michael, who was coming to New York in the play "Killer Joe." There was an intensity and disturbing quality to Michael's performance in "Killer Joe." Combined with his physical presence and dark humor, he slightly frightened you. He was unlike any actor I had seen before, and it was exciting to think about the roles one could try him for.Years later I was casting "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" for Sidney Lumet. Sid's office at the time was at Sound One. Casting for Sidney, as other casting directors can attest, is an amazing experience—and unusual,...

Winchester Capital Management, the company that financed Men Who Stare At Goats and The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee has given the greenlight to the supernatural romantic comedy Taravella. Written by Untamed Heart scribe and Toxic Avenger stunt man, Tom Sierchio. It’s been quite a while since anything Sierchio has written has made it to the big screen, but it seems he has not lost his interest for odd romantic pairings.

Written by Tom Sierchio (whose last credit comes via Untamed Heart - the 1993 pic starring Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei), Taravella mixes the rom com with a supernatural element -- perhaps in the vein of The Time Traveler's Wife - but with younger leads. I get the sense that this is the sort of project that was circulating in the system and needed a couple of impassioned folks in the biz that are seeing the project with another set of eyes.

Winchester Capital Management ("Men Who Stare at Goats") has given the greenlight to the romantic comedy with a supernatural twist called "Taravella." Pic is produced by Bonnie Curtis ("Saving Private Ryan," "Minority Report"), Victoria Wisdom and John Miranda. Scott Ellis is set to direct and the film will start production in early fall. Tom Sierchio ("Untamed Heart") wrote the screenplay for the love story about a beautiful but eccentric young woman who suffers from amnesia and falls out of the sky one day into the life of a young man, who struggles to learn the mystery behind her inexplicable appearance.

This Christmas season, after the post-Turducken chest pains have subsided enough to allow movement, you may be inspired by your food-induced minor cardiac trauma to watch a movie about a heart patient romance. But now that there are at least two modern movies about heart patient romance, the 1993 Marisa Tomei/Christian Slater movie, Untamed Heart, and Will Smith's current cinematic crusade to prove that he's a better human being than everyone else, Seven Pounds, you have a very difficult choice to make—a choice almost as difficult as deciding who is worthy enough to receive your bone marrow. So which organ transplant romance will your body reject faster? Let's spot the differences! (This goes without saying, but spoiler alert for both Seven Pounds and a special honorary, 15-year-old spoiler alert for Untamed Heart) Our (possibly annoying) Protagonist: Untamed Heart: Marisa Tomei, a cheerful, caring, if lonely Minnesota waitress who.

Actor Christian Slater has rejected a plea bargain deal from prosecutors on a charge of allegedly groping a woman in a New York street. The Untamed Heart star was charged with forcible touching after he allegedly grabbed a woman's buttocks as she was buying groceries in Manhattan in May. Slater and his attorney insist the case should be dismissed because it's ridiculous, but the actor faces a year in prison if he's found guilty. Under the plea bargain offered him yesterday morning, Slater would have pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree harassment in return for three days of community service. The actor sat motionless during the brief hearing, but chatted with fans outside the Manhattan Criminal Court. Judge Richard Weinberg has scheduled Slater to return to court in September for a ruling. The actor will be hoping to avoid any sentencing as he is due to fly to London at the end of September to rehearse for upcoming West End play Sweet Bird Of Youth.
