Tom Johnson, a writer and stand-up comic with credits including “The Daily Show” and “The Jeselnik Offensive,” has died at the age of 55.
In a statement Friday, his family said he died at his home “Peacefully and unexpectedly” on Jan. 14. No cause of death has been made public.
“Growing up,” the family wrote in their statement, Johnson “had an insatiable curiosity. He was talented in all of the arts: a gifted artist who could draw in vivid detail, played the guitar and trombone, and acted in plays throughout college at the University of Missouri. He loved the band Kiss and enjoyed dressing up like the lead singer for Halloween.”
“Tom had a huge heart and cared deeply about taking care of others. He launched the careers of countless successful comedians. His work ethic was impeccable. He was fair, kind, talented, inclusive, and funny as hell. He was a voracious reader,...

Zen Studios has announced a November 30 release date for their horror-themed pinball game Pinball M, which will arrive on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. With the previously-announced licensed tables coming next year, Pinball M will launch with a table based on John Carpenter‘s 1982 classic The Thing.
“The Thing Pinball is an authentic homage to the 1982 film, and features original clips from the film itself,” said Zen Studios COO Mel Kirk. “It gives long-time horror fans a go-to table in Pinball M, and completes our extraordinary line-up for launch.”
As these themed tables go, your objective with The Thing Pinball is to use your (digital) pinball skills and battle against the shape-shifting alien through the arctic chill of U.S. Outpost #31. The table covers quite a bit of ground from the film, including the initial dog kennel attack,...

Duke Nukem 3D might be getting a re-release soon as clues are slowly building.
Earlier this morning I noticed the social feeds and PR channels for Duke Nukem were rebooting. A post had hit the official Duke Nukem Facebook page alerting people to follow their twitter page. The last post this page made was back in 2012.
The Twitter page has been active ever since, and even triggered a political debate of "right and wrong" on other pages already.
Finally the official site updated to a teaser site, but some might have trouble accessing it. The age gate seems to be entirely broken and blocking you from viewing the content, or perhaps it wasn't supposed to be released yet. Those that can get in can see a count down timer that expires this friday at 5Pm P.T. (Gearbox is hosting a Pax West panel at that time, which is when...

There is a breed of gamer, they are getting on a bit now but they still remember the hell of PC gaming in the nineties. This was when numbers like 2086, 286, 386 and 486 actually meant something other than being bad lines in Hackers and multi-core computing was not something even considered in the home environment, never mind even the idea of 3D gaming (though it was coming). This was the time of Shareware, and most importantly for this review, the time that 3D Realms Anthology looks back at.
If like me you still remember downloading shareware games, just taking a look at the 3D Realms Anthology list on Steam will bring back some great memories. Even for the uninitiated the likes of Duke Nukem will be noticeable straight away, especially the inclusion of Duke Nukem 3D. I’m sure more than a few people also notice the Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project on the list too,...

If you don't know Tim Shaw, the host of Nat Geo's "None of the Above" (Mondays at 9:00 p.m. Et on Nat Geo), it might be because you don't live in the U.K. Across the pond, he's known for pulling some of the most insane pranks on radio and television, as well as for his engineering genius (the guy is an inventor in real life). I've met him a few times now and chatted with him on the set of "None of the Above" (look for that soon), and he's nothing if not affable, chatty and endlessly fascinating. Below are just nine of the crazy things he has on his resume -- see if you don't agree. 1) He broke into his boss' house In 2005, while working for Kerrang! Radio, Shaw and co-worker Greg Prebble broke into the house of station director Andrew Jeffries. Shaw wasn't looking for valuables,...

Jeanne Veillette Bowerman is a screenwriter, columnist, and co-founder of #scriptchat, a weekly gathering of writers on Twitter. Amazon Studios asked her to try Amazon Storyteller, a tool that lets you turn your script into a storyboard (like hers). Here’s how it went:
Not having any aspiration to direct, I had never storyboarded my own scripts. For me, the idea of storyboarding was akin to waterboarding – pure torture. I was perfectly content with the glorious, twisted images I had floating in my head.
But any of you who follow my Script Magazine Balls of Steel column know I’m a competitive freak who loves a challenge. I have a quest for learning new things, so when Amazon Studios asked if I’d try the free Amazon Storyteller tool, the game was on!

After landing a sponsorship deal with Dodge, achieving an historic success on Kickstarter, and beginning to film at YouTube Space La, Freddie Wong and Matt Arnold are almost set to release the second season of their smash hit web series, Video Game High School. The series, which is set to debut mid-July in time for Comic-Con, will make use of innovative camerawork to showcase Wong's technical abilities. According to a release from the Collective Digital Studio, with which Freddiew is partnered, Vghs season two will be the first show ever shot in a mixed frame rate. Season two's action sequences will be shot at 48 frames per second, the format Peter Jackson debuted with The Hobbit last year. Using such a high frame rate will allow Wong to paint an extremely realistic picture during the videogame sequences. The rest of the series will use the traditional frame rate of 24 frames per second.

Big Brother 14 Week 2 Reset Nominations Ceremony Review: "Did We Do The Right Thing?"
Well, well, well... Those nominations were as lackluster as Big Brother slop and just as predictable as the Coaches joining the game "twist."
Tonight's nomination episode of Big Brother dealt mostly with Frank and Boogie continuing their dominance of the household, planning not only who they will get out the house this week but the following weeks as well. Meanwhile, Britney and a few others walked around the house second guessing their decision to send Janelle home just mere minutes after the woman's eviction. Don't have a conscious now, folks. You had the chance to get Frank out the house this week in a surefire locked nomination. You let him go, you blew it, and now he and Boogie are about to take each of you down as if you were a gang of henchmen in a bad Steven Segal flick.

"I actually just -- I just made a video that you can view on YouTube right now. It's called Andy Lewis: Balls of Steel!" Lewis exclaimed. "You should check that out!"...

Few bands can legitimately say they’ve influenced both Battles and Lamb Of God. Breadwinner is one of them. In the early ’90s, the Virginia group hashed out an off-kilter, technically dizzying deconstruction of instrumental metal that solidified the burgeoning subgenre of math-rock. Breadwinner guitarist Pen Rollings formed his latest outfit, Loincloth, in 2003, but while he left before the band released its debut full-length, Iron Balls Of Steel, the album picks up not far from where Breadwinner left off in 1992—lack of vocals, love of calculus, and all. The main difference is, Iron Balls has a lot more ...

The Only Way Is Essex, which starrd Lauren Goodger, James ‘Arg’ Argent and Sam Faiers, was named Best Entertainment Show and Best Non-Competition Reality Show, while Amy Childs fought off cocky co-stars Mark Wright and Joey Essex to take home the Reality Personality of the Year gong.
Amy, whose mum collected the award on her behalf, promises she will be returning to ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ for an upcoming third season this autumn.
She said: “It’s a massive achievement for me, I’m so shocked. It means the world to me. I pinch myself every day.
“I’m 100 million per cent not quitting ‘The Only Way Is Essex’, I’ll be back in September. There’s a lot more of Amy Childs to come. I can’t wait to start filming again.

The Devil Dared Me To
Stars: Chris Stapp, Matt Heath, Bonnie Soper | Written by Chris Stapp, Matt Heath | Directed by Chris Stapp
The Devil Dared Me To is the story of Randy Cambell a kid with a dream. His dream is to be a daredevil stuntman like his father, seen as New Zealand’s greatest stuntman. His main desire and the stunt that will make him the greatest is to jump over the Cook Strait in a rocket car, something he’s practiced on his bike, leading to many injuries. As he grows up and gives up on trying it on his bike, he joins a team known as the Timaru Hellriders led by Dick Johansonson. We follow Randy’s rise to the top and his resulting rivalry with Dick which causes death, loss of limbs, love affairs and plenty of getting drunk and doing drugs (mainly by Dick) and...

Editor's Note: The pictures you are about to see are real. They have not been altered in any way, shape, or form. They have not been composited together digitally in a photo program. You may find yourself shocked, shaken, and/or stunned by what you're about to see. The time has come. The Duke is back. The crowd cheers.
Even though I'm now staring at it in my hand, I cannot help but stand here slack-jawed in a state of stunned disbelief. The disc is real. Not a candy-coated treat. My 360 awaits. Look for a full review next week. In the interim ... the photographic evidence you thought you'd never see.

Our post about gay actors playing straight characters got us thinking about the flipside, straight actors playing gay characters.
But a list of straight actors successfully playing gay would be obvious (Tom Hanks, Heath Ledger, Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and frankly dull. So we decided instead to sharpen our knives and make a list that's a hell of a lot more fun.
Straight actors who crashed and burned attempting to play gay.
Most of these performances rely on cliche and stereotype, and to be fair, a lot of our favorite gay performances from straight actors do lean heavily on the flamboyant. But actors such as Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) manage to inject warmth, heart, and sincerity into the theatrics.
These actors, on the other hand, either try way too hard, or not hard enough, and embarrass themselves ... and us.

Outlook had crashed when I arrived at the computer this morning and I knew why the moment it reloaded and new e-mail came through. A 2K Games press release detailing all of the over-the-top goodies fans can expect from the just-announced "Duke Nukem Forever" Balls of Steel Edition clearly caused some kind of short circuit with its generous helpings of awesome.
The special edition release, which will cost you $99.99 (or thereabouts) is highlighted by a collectible bust that captures Duke's mug in something that looks like rough stone, but probably isn't rough stone. There's a whole mess of other items too, including a hardcover book, poker chips, dice, playing cards and, hilariously, a certificate of authenticity. Because, you know, you don't want to accidentally end up with a counterfeit not-stone bust of Mr. Nukem's head and upper torso.

Already a two-time Emmy winner, Kathy Griffin earned another two nods (Outstanding Reality Program and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Special) yesterday when the ballots were announced. We checked in with the My Life of the D-List star, who took time out of a drop-in visit from Flipping Out’s Jeff Lewis to talk to us about the nods, her competition, and what we can expect from her speech if she wins. (For inquiring minds, her celebrating mother is still on her first box of wine.)

In what we think has been the best year in television quite possibly in decades, it's hard not to be excited for the announcement of this year's Emmy nominations. And while some of our favorites were missing from the list we think many categories could have been expanded to ten nominees (like the recent best feature film Oscar move) and still not pay homage to all the great work done this season.
So without further adieu here are our random thoughts on this year's Emmy nominations:
1) Glee dominates. With 19 nods, it was the most recognized series this year. Of course, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison landed in best actress/actor categories and Jane Lynch made the Supporting Actress list. And it was no surprise either that both Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenowith got nods for guest spots. But, the best and biggest surprise was...

• Two-time Emmy champ Kathy Griffin is a savvy campaigner for TV's top honor. In Thursday's print edition of the Hollywood Reporter, she displays her considerable talents in a "For Your Consideration" ad. Griffin poses in a cheesecake shot reminiscent of 1950s pin-up Bettie Page. The copy touts her three Emmy hopes -- best reality program ("My Life on the D-List"), best variety music or comedy special ("Balls of Steel") and guest actress in a drama series ("Law & Order: Svu"). She also heralds her work in a category that has yet to get Emmy recognition -- a YouTube sex video -- and in the ad copy says, "They don't give out an Emmy for...

Kathy Griffin is back on the "D List." Getting ready to premiere her sixth season of the hit Bravo show, Kathy is more A-list than ever (save for that Emmy loss).
With assistants Tom and Tiffany in tow, and mother Maggie not too far behind, Griffin performs sold-out shows around the country, campaigns to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," hangs with A-list celebs like Liza Minelli and Kristen Chenoweth, and even finds time to head to Alaska to knock on Sarah Palin's door. No word yet on if she answers.
The Emmy Award-winning series returns to Bravo on Tuesday, June 15th at 9pm. But one week before, fans will get to see the comedian's latest stand-up comedy special, her eighth on the network.
Following head-scratching titles like "Strong Black Woman" and "Balls of Steel," the comedian returns with "Kathy Griffin Does the Bible Belt." Filmed at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville,...

Knock, Knock. Who's There? The Closet. you're Still Around? You Better Believe It!
There's been a great deal of discussion on the site over the past couple of weeks about gay celebrities, the closet and what constitutes being "out." And even though we've discussed the issue numerous times before, it seems like it is once again time to revisit the topic. And it's a subject that is as tricky as ever and that can have real consequences for the celebrities involved.
Perez kicked the latest round of debate off when he posted an item about White Collar's Matthew Bomer. Without citing a source or saying how he knew, Perez simply claimed Matt was an out gay man. If true, we were certainly interested in writing about Matt and his show, but as we aren't a gossip site, I wasn't going to simply repeat Perez's claims — for lots of reasons.

Welcome to another edition of TV or Not TV where I’m starting to wonder if I fell in love with Flashforward too soon.
The pilot episode of Flashforward did exactly the job that a lot of pilots are supposed to do in that it sucked me in with a decent mystery and gave me enough questions that made me want to see the story that it set up. Everyone balcks out for two minutes and seventeen seconds, some people have very lucid visions of themselves around 1o Pm six months in the future. Scenarios are set up that seem impossible: a dead daughter is seen alive, a loving wife is happily involved with another man and so on. Some people have no vision at all.
Instantly the questions chime in that make you want to tune in week after week. Will the visions come true? If the visions come...

It's been too long since Kathy Griffin has been on Bravo! My Life on the D-List ended in August, but it seems much longer since we've had some Griffin humor. That drought will end next month. On November 3, Bravo will air Kathy Griffin's new stand-up special, Balls of Steel.
I'm smiling already. Kathy is hilarious, by far the funniest woman on Bravo... and unlike the females on the Real Housewives, she is intentionally funny. Her stand up concerts are especially well-done because she gets to really dish about pop culture, skewering the likes of Oprah, Rosie, Cher, Paris, et al.

Kathy Griffin is set to premiere her latest original stand-up special on Bravo, her seventh for the network. Kathy Griffin's "Balls of Steel" premieres Tuesday, November 3rd at 9pm.
Just over six months since her last hit Bravo special, "She'll Cut a Bitch," the Emmy Award-winner returns with her latest Hollywood skewering. In the special, she divulges details on her Teen Choice Awards date with Bristol Palin's baby daddy Levi Johnston, as well as recently headline-makers Jon and Kate Gosselin and Miley Cyrus.
