How is this NCIS?

Having recently discovered NCIS here in the UK from series 1 episode 1 - total accident but a fortunate one - I was curious about the spin-off series NCIS: LA.

I have enjoyed other spin off series such as CSI:Miami and CSI:NY because they were different but also engaging and interesting in their characterisation. As a result I am disappointed, so far, with NCIS:LA.

There is no real discernible link to the ideals of the parent series. NCIS is about a team of investigators who work together from a central government office (that HQ is beyond belief). They investigate cases relating to a naval/ marine central core. They investigate according to a recognisable procedure of investigation.

In NCIS:LA what is the naval link apart from LL Cool J being a SEAL previously? What cases have they investigated that have a naval premise? (Recognising a robbery by SEALs came AFTER the crime was referred and shooting a Korean on a jet-ski isn't naval). Gibbs is the only naval officer in the original but at least he is in charge! Hettie is ballsy and funny - but a naval officer? Rosa Klebb in From Russia With Love maybe (Commander Bond).

As I said earlier I have only watched the original for about 3 months, so cannot be judged a series snob - cos the watchers from 2003 would say I was a late discoverer and not relevant, so what do I know - I am watching two new series from a recent stand point. NCIS is quality, CIS:LA is poor. Cross over episodes and cameos by original characters don't work. It would have been better served with an original title rather than trading on the parent series for a core audience (beyond Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J fans).
