Mark Waid wrote a screenplay, based on his "Superman: Birthright" comic, which retold Superman (1978) but with significant differences: Jonathan and Martha Kent are alive and serve as Superman's allies, Clark Kent is given more characterization/prominence (Waid felt Superman was the mask and Kent was the true persona), the citizens of Metropolis are (initially/later) afraid of Superman, Lex Luthor creates a smear campaign to distract/discourage Superman and meanwhile filches Kryptonian technology to use for world domination, and Superman time-travels to meet his parents on Krypton and shows them he survived the planet's destruction and has become a true hero. more
