Great American Family’s biggest time of the year is here. The network, run by former Hallmark CEO Bill Abbott, is leaning in to the holiday season big time, after seeing a year of massive growth.
According to the year-over-year data, Gaf is up 150% in total viewers in 2023 compared to 2022, and the success can be credited to multiple factors, Abbott tells Variety.
“One of the biggest parts of our growth has been our talent, and the fact that we have such recognizable stars in our stable of talent — and that they are relentless in promoting Great American Family,” he says. “That, in and of itself, has created the awareness necessary to grow like we have.”
Candace Cameron Bure, Trevor Donovan, Jen Lilley, Danica McKellar and Jessica Lowndes all have exclusive deals with Gaf, while their Christmas movie lineup also includes Matthew Morrison, Chad Michael Murray, Lori Loughlin, Jill Wagner and James Tupper.

The world of holiday programming continues to grow. While Hallmark Channel and Lifetime have seen major success with their “Countdown to Christmas” and “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” slates, respectively, Great American Family joined the discussion in 2021.
In June 2021, the network, originally tilted Great American Country (Gac), was acquired by Gac Media, a group formed by former Hallmark CEO Bill Abbott and Hicks Equity Partners. In the fall of that year, the network was relaunched as Gac Family.
Under Gac Media, Great American Country changed to “Gac Family” and later to “Great American Family” — the title they have gone by since August 2022. The channel became similar in content to what Abbott had created at Hallmark, including original made-for-tv movies, holiday programming and big franchises. However, it also focuses more heavily on faith-driven programming.

We’ve all been spending a lot of time at home these days. But thanks to the wonders of technology, we can also take trips to Twin Peaks, Wisteria Lane or California’s most famous zip code, among other notable TV locales.
Since the days of self-quarantine began earlier this spring, dozens of stars from long-gone television shows have reunited virtually. By way of nostalgia-filled Zoom calls, short-form YouTube series and Instagram Live videos, the casts of nearly two dozen shows have come together to reminisce, including stars from Friday Night Lights, The Office, Glee, Melrose Place and other series.

Here we are: the first Masters of Horror episode from my favorite filmmaker of all time: the late, great Tobe Hooper.
Season 1, Episode 3: “Dance of the Dead”
Director: Tobe Hooper
Original Air Date: November 11th, 2005
One of the coolest things about the Showtime anthology series Masters of Horror is that, in addition to codifying who many of the genre “masters” were (though it didn’t cover all of them; there were no episodes directed by Wes Craven or George Romero or David Cronenberg or a handful of other greats), the series gave opportunities to filmmakers that had fallen somewhat out of the pop culture consciousness to remind fans that they still had it—they just had to be given the chance. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the case of Tobe Hooper, who was something of a punching bag in the horror genre when his season 1 episode aired.

The new horror film “Abattoir” takes the concept of a haunted house to its conceptual limit. The film follows investigative reporter Julia Talben (Jessica Lowndes) whose life is turned upside when her family is brutally murdered. Though believed to be an open-and-shut case, she quickly realizes there’s more to the story. Soon she and her ex-lover Declan Grady (Joe Anderson) are drawn to the town of New English where they find Jebediah Crone and the Abattoir – a monstrous house stitched together with unending rooms of death and the damned. Now Julia must solve the case before it’s too late. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

You have to admire Darren Lynn Bousman‘s ambition because he could have just kept going with the Saw franchise after taking over the reins from James Wan. Instead he jumped ship to work on a passion project developed with Terrance Zdunich and Darren Smith entitled Repo! The Genetic Opera. Here was a science fiction horror musical based upon a short produced two years previously with enough character and originality to become a cult favorite. Since then he wrote a couple films that didn’t go over well and reunited with Zdunich on another musical before delving into a comic book universe entitled Abattoir with writers Rob Levin and Troy Peteri about a mysterious man who collects rooms where tragedies occurred and fashions them together into a nightmarish ghost-filled mansion.
Begun as a six-issue series, the property gained steam with its multimedia publisher Radical Studios to go one step further into creating a feature film.

About 11 years ago, Darren Lynn Bousman first got attention for directing not just Saw II, but it’s two sequels as well, and those being the three most successful movies in the franchise, he was able to go off and do his own thing, which was the horror musical, Repo! The Genetic Opera. In the time since then, Bousman has kept with a number of more personal projects, and one of them that’s finally seeing the light of day is one called Abattoir.
Bousman came up with the idea for Abattoir as a horror comic series published through Radical Publishing before adapting it into a movie starring Jessica Lowndes (90210) as reporter Julia Talben, whose sister is killed in a violent home invasion, which leads to her investigating a strange house buyer who bought the house and removed the murder room, something he’s been doing for other scenes of violent crimes.

Viewers shouldn't get too excited, or too dismissive, when the opening scenes of Darren Lynn Bousman's Abattoir suggest it may intend to dress its swampy ghost story up in the clothing of a '30s screwball comedy. Though its plucky reporter heroine (Jessica Lowndes) displays a love for all things retro throughout, the film drops its newsroom-banter conceit early on to focus on a less familiar angle. Horror buffs may warm to the moody film, especially with few thrillers currently competing in the market; more important, journalists working the real-estate beat will have the rare thrill of seeing their career glamorized.

Abattoir poses such a savage, provocative haunted house concept, but much like Brad Peyton’s Incarnate, this re-modeled genre construct is wasted on plodding execution that squanders any inherent excitement. Darren Lynn Bousman erects his very own funhouse amusement out of bloody murder locations, building a true-to-form haunted house without the haunts. Dead souls inhabit the very rooms they were slain in, all so an old, vengeful creep can make peace with his own family’s passing. It’s an architect’s dream hobby mixed with Satan’s own interior decorating, yet we’re never granted access to the horrors that pulsate from room to room. Tonal airlessness, momentum-halting CGI, disconnected storytelling – these are just a few of the code violations that stack against 2016’s most daunting renovation nightmare.

"The guy is a ghost collecting ghosts." Momentum Pictures has debuted a new trailer for the haunted house horror thriller Abattoir, from director Darren Bousman (of Saw II-IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera). The film stars Jessica Lowndes as a real estate reporter who teams up with a cop to investigate the death of her family. This leads her to discover a house in the town of New English called the Abattoir, featuring "stitched together" unending rooms of death. There's obviously something much more sinister going on with this place, but the question that keeps coming up is: "How do you build a haunted house?" The cast includes Joe Anderson, Dayton Callie, John McConnell and Lin Shaye. If you're a horror fan, give this a look. Darren Lynn Bousman, it’s fair to say, has a spotty track record in horror cinema. The man who made the superlative remake of Mother’s Day is also responsible for the okay Saw II, the not-so-okay Saw III, and the “Oh God, we’re only barely over halfway done?” Saw IV. More recently, he’s been turning to more operatic types of horror, fusing them to his intentionally over-the-top and hammy shtick in The Devil’s Carnival, which is sort of like a Juggalo version of The Twilight Zone. Nonetheless, his heart is clearly in the horror of yesteryear, in classic ghost stories and things that go bump in the night, which has led to Abbatoir, his homage to noir, haunted houses, and Southern gothic spooks, all put in a Cuisinart and blended together.
