Shot in Wrightsville, Arkansas, with a cast of non-professionals, young writer-producer-director-composer Amman Abbasi’s feature debut offers an intensely sincere coming-of-age story that pivots around one adolescent’s initiation into gang life. Although the project has a documentary air, thanks to workshop time spent with real gang members and a strong, authentic sense of place, the picture’s funky-retro 4:3 ratio, occasional bursts of highly stylized editing and striking use of dreamy avant-garde music by Abbasi himself lend the proceedings a sharp arthouse edge. With support from executive producers such as James Schamus, Lisa Muskat and David Gordon Green (whose debut George Washington...

Director: David Gordon Green
Writer: Paul Logan
Producers: Lisa Muskat, David Gordon Green, Derrick Tseng
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Al Pacino, Holly Hunter, Chris Messina, Harmony Korine
Aside from the trio of forgettable studio films, David Gordon Green has been synonymous with indie film as a filmmaker and perhaps even more so as a producer (Shotgun Stories, Great World of Sound, Compliance, The Comedy, Land Ho!). We’re banking that his succession of sturdy 2013 offerings in Prince Avalanche and Joe equates to another solid feature in Manglehorn – which sees the iconic Pacino and Harmony Korine suiting up.
Gist: This is the story of an eccentric man (Pacino) who tries to come to terms with a past crime that cost him the love of his life.
Release Date: Filming took place past the midway point last year and this could actually end up in Cannes, though Venice and...

Here’s a first look at Al Pacino in David Gordon Green’s Manglehorn, which also stars Holly Hunter, Chris Messina and Harmony Korine.
Aj Manglehorn (Pacino) is an aging, ordinary guy in a small town. He nurses his sick cat, squeezes out a conversation with the local bank teller every Friday, and eats at the same place every day. But there is more to Manglehorn than meets the eye: he’s an ex-con who, 40 years ago, gave up the woman of his dreams for a big “job.” He now obsesses daily over the choices he made. After a dramatic effort to start over, Manglehorn faces a terrifying moment and is unmasked as a guy with a very, very dark past.

After he delivered two raunchy misfires in a row with Your Highness and The Sitter, it’s gratifying to see director David Gordon Green return to the same kind of quiet, low-key dramas that put him on the map. And with an extremely limited cast and one constant backdrop, Prince Avalanche is perhaps Green’s quietest, lowest-key film yet.
Its commitment to the abstract is sometimes maddening, and its glacially slow pace is likely frustrating enough to alienate some viewers. However, I found Prince Avalanche remarkable in its ability to transfix me with the simplest of resources: two soulful performers, nature as a nonintrusive setting, feather-light direction and a minimalistic script. As it wanders along, the film possesses a strange, poetic charm that defies explanation.
As the film opens, we learn about a forest fire in the late 1980s that tore through the Texas wilderness, reducing trees and homes to ashes.

Joined by director/screenwriter David Gordon Green and producer Lisa Muskat, the bearded costars looked handsome as they posed for pictures and chatted with the press as part of the 63rd Berlinale Film Festival.
“Prince Avalanche” has already released here in the United States, and it’s slowly making its way around the globe.
Per the synopsis, “Two highway road workers spend the summer of 1988 away from their city lives. The isolated landscape becomes a place of misadventure as the men find themselves at odds with each other and the women they left behind.”...

Park City, Ut – January 23, 2013 – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired North American rights to Prince Avalanche after its rapturously received Sunday premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The new film from writer/director David Gordon Green, Prince Avalanche stars Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, and was produced by Lisa Muskat, Derrick Tseng, Craig Zobel (director of Magnolia’s 2012 release Compliance), James Belfer and David Gordon Green. Driven by striking performances from Rudd and Hirsch, Prince Avalanche is an offbeat comedy about two men painting traffic lines on a desolate country highway that’s been ravaged by wildfire. Against this dramatic setting, beautifully shot by frequent Green collaborator Tim Orr, the men bicker and joke with each other, eventually developing an unlikely friendship. Funny, meditative and at times surreal, Prince Avalanche features a moving score by Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo, and...

Director/Writer: David Gordon Green
Producer(s): Gordon Green, James Belfer, Muskat Filmed Properties’ Lisa Muskat, Derrick Tseng and filmmaker Craig Zobel.
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch
After a string of films we might one day refer to as his Amblin phase (Pineapple Express, Your Highness, The Sitter) it appears that Prince Avalanche is the welcome return to Gordon Green’s indie roots. Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch should prove to be a great pair of misfits in an item which is based on the 2011 film Either Way, from Icelandic helmer Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson. Don’t be surprised if the writer/director reminds us with his eighth feature film outing, that he can flex both his dramatic and comedic writing skills with ease – and what a year it would be if this, and Joe (we’ve slotted a bit higher up...

With the only piece of news coming from a June trade mention, we fathom that before David Gordon Green climbed onto his currently filming Joe and that he closed the books on Prince Avalanche – but not unlike his mentor Terrence Malick, he could have easily decided to put this indie comedy aside and get right to work on his latest project. Featuring Sundance vets Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, what we do know is that Dgg collaborated once again with Producer Lisa Muskat, Composer David Wingo, Production Designer Richard A. Wright and true partner in crime Cinematographer Tim Orr. We guess he might want to premiere a smaller project at the same lieu he showed off All the Real Girls (Sundance ’03), Snow Angels (Sundance ’07) and numerous projects wearing the producer’s hat (more recently Craig Zobel’s Compliance).

While he remained in the U.S. indie biz in a producer capacity, it’s with one foot out that David Gordon Green indulged in major studio filmmaking with a forgettable trio of projects such as Pineapple Express, Your Highness and The Sitter. Fans of the filmmaker can expect a Gus Van Sant type of career for Green, exploring different genres (he has a Suspiria remake in the works) and budget sizes, it was confirmed by the trades that he and his Dp Tim Orr and producers Lisa Muskat, Derrick Tseng and helmer Craig Zobel planted themselves in Austin, Texas for the remake of a little known Icelandic road trip comedy starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch. Titled Prince Avalanche, if I’d have to put a wager on when we should expect to see this, I’d say Sundance 2013.
