“The Essentials”—A Good Starting Point
By Raymond Benson
Any book that claims to be a collection of the “best” of something—whether it is a listing of movies, music, art, and so forth—has to be taken with a grain of salt. These kinds of things are entirely subjective; although in this case, TCM (Turner Classic Movies) does have a kind of clout and expertise in the matter.
That said, we have this beautifully-designed and illustrated coffee-table trade paperback that contains not 1000, not 100, not 50... but 52 “essential must-see movies.” TCM’s spokesperson, Robert Osborne, explains the criteria in his Foreword—“The Essentials” is a weekly Saturday night event on the television network in which a guest host (the likes of Rob Reiner, Sydney Pollack, Peter Bogdanovich, Drew Barrymore, and more) introduce a picture he or she believes is an Essential. The book is a collection of some of these Essentials,...

A legendary raconteur who’s gift for gab rivals his cinematic output, Peter Bogdanovich is always a treat to watch or listen to. His career had many ups and downs—perhaps evinced in our recent feature, The Essentials: Peter Bogdanovich's 9 Best Films—but he not only earned the approval and friendship of the iconoclastic Orson Welles at a young age, but his early cinematic trifecta (“The Last Picture Show,” “What’s Up Doc?” and “Paper Moon”) is unassailable. Name one filmmaker who had their first three movies become classics? (“Targets” being a hybrid film he was left to clean up, arguably isn’t his true first movie). And so, Bogdanovich in an hour and a half chat on Marc Maron’s Wtf podcast is an absolute treat for your ears. Bogdanovich has a million stories and the 76 year old tells the comedian many epic tales. One of the...

Among the handful of controversies that swirled around "Selma," was the depiction of President Lyndon B. Johnson. In the Ava DuVernay film, the former President isn't depicted as being the most supportive figure of the civil rights movement, though some suggested that Johnson was far more integral behind-the-scenes in working with Martin Luther King Jr. Now a new movie is brewing that will once again put Johnson on the big screen. Read More: The Essentials: The Films Of Rob Reiner (Before He Forgot How To Direct Movies) Showbiz 411 reports that Rob Reiner is finally mounting his long developing biopic about Lyndon B. Johnson with Woody Harrelson in the lead role. The director has been kicking the project around for years, and at one time was said to be using Robert Caro's biography "Means Of Ascent" as source material. Now that most shows have returned from their midseason breaks, the drama, wit and hilarity were in high amounts this week on our favorite TV series. From "The Vampire Diaries" to "American Horror Story: Coven" to "Archer," it was a good week for TV dialogue. Check out some of Zap2it's favorite quotes below:
"The Vampire Diaries"
"How am I the only person on the planet not having scandalous sex?" -- Caroline
Minutes later: "Hello, Caroline." -- Klaus arrives and they have scandalous sex in the woods
"American Horror Story: Coven"
"He's a psycho mass murderer." -- Madison
"Is there anyone here of whom that cannot be said?" -- Myrtle
"Archer"
"Potato, po-treason, whatever. But we've been up against terrorists, assassins, the Kgb, the Ira, remember? North Korea, cyborgs ... um, help me out." -- Archer
"Um, space pirates?" -- Lana

Alec Baldwin is returning to TV hosting on January 6 — that was quick. Baldwin will be seen taking over hosting duties on TCM’s Private Screenings to interview TCM’s Robert Osbourne . Osbourne, who usually hosts Private Screenings among his many duties on the network, is switching chairs that one night, to pick the night’s four movies — and be interviewed about his career by Baldwin. Baldwin’s a good choice — of the several actors who’ve co-host TCM’s The Essentials franchise with Osbourne over the years, he was by far the best. Baldwin co-hosted the 2009 and 2010 seasons of the film showcase, spotlighting a specific movie each week, with discussion before and after the film. After Baldwin left, Drew Barrymore took over. Robert Osborne remains Turner Classic Movies' main man, but he's there slightly less now.
And that's fine with him.
While the veteran Hollywood columnist and historian still handles the lion's share of introductions for the channel's films, he's been off a bit more -- notably on Friday nights -- with fellow TCM host Ben Mankiewicz picking up those duties. In 2011, Osborne took a three-month leave for unspecified "minor surgery," and he says his current schedule is a perfect fit for him.
"I love it," he tells Zap2it. "It's great. I'm not traveling except for big occasions, like the Classic Film Festival or the Classic Cruise. To not be worried about the airports or the weather, or getting out of New York and getting into Atlanta [where Osborne had been taping his segments], and not having to leave for a week every month and stay in a hotel ... it's been great.

10: Gentleman’s Agreement
Perhaps a bit tame by today’s standards, but Kazan’s message drama was an extremely important film in 1947, marking one of the first times that the word Jew was explicity used in a Hollywood picture. Kazan was known throughout his career as a champion of social causes, and Gentleman’s Agreement earned him the first of two Best Director wins (out of five such nominations). Agreement follows a respected gentile journalist (Gregory Peck) hired by a magazine publisher (Albert Dekker) to write a gutsy expose about anti-Semitism. In order to deliver a true, honest and powerful story, he decides to present himself as Jewish everywhere he goes. Gregory Peck gives unquestionably the second best performance of his career. His strong, steady portrayal earned him a Best Actor nomination (although not a win).

At this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival, we had the chance to sit in on a few conversations with the legendary Max von Sydow. As part of the festival’s tribute to the actor, TCM screened two excellent von Sydow films – the existential and cinephile must-see “The Seventh Seal” and the 1970s spy thriller “Three Days of the Condor" (both featured in our The Essentials: 5 Great Max von Sydow Performances). During the introductions to these films, the Swedish actor discussed his career, the directors he had worked with and what’s next on his plate with TCM hosts Ben Mankiewicz and Robert Osborne, respectively. On Ingmar Bergman: “It was a continuous, very inspiring working relationship… He had a talent of making his actors getting into the parts with 100% attention, not always with 100% respect or it was a matter of not being too impressed of this fantastic character you were going to play.

Question: What do you think of Drew Barrymore becoming your new co-host on "The Essentials"?
Robert Osborne: She's really of today, so I didn't think she'd care that much about old films. Wrong! When I met her, she seemed so pleased about it, and she also was so enthusiastic about the channel. She said, "I want you to meet my boyfriend. The reason we're together is because of TCM." They were going out on a date or something, and he said, "I really want to stay home and watch TCM." It was a bonding thing between them. I was talking to her about her family, and she knew everything about (fellow actors) Ethel and John and Lionel.
Question: How did her hiring for "The Essentials" come about?
Robert Osborne: At the end of the conversation (at last year's TCM Classic Film Festival), she said, "If I had one wish,...

Drew Barrymore knows what's essential in movie-making as an actress and a producer ... and also as a member of one of Hollywood's most famous families,
The former child star is about to prove it: An admitted Turner Classic Movies devotee, she succeeds Alec Baldwin as co-host of its weekly series "The Essentials" starting Saturday (March 3). She'll join principal channel host Robert Osborne to present and analyze legendary films, beginning with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as musicians running from the mob in director Billy Wilder's 1959 comedy "Some Like It Hot."
"It's as simple as my having been fortunate enough to get the request," Barrymore tells Zap2it of being invited by Osborne himself, "and I just wanted to make it happen. In a crazy life and a crazy schedule, these are the kinds of things you make time for."
Because of her other obligations, Barrymore's "Essentials" segments were done last fall,...
