Stars: Nicolas Cage, Pedro Pascal, Sharon Horgan, Lily Sheen, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Neil Patrick Harris | Written by Tom Gormican, Kevin Etten | Directed by Tom Gormican
Nicolas Cage plays a tongue-in-cheek version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a gleefully meta action comedy from co-writer / director Tom Gormican. Mining sizeable laughs from every aspect of the actor’s life, career and larger-than-life screen persona, it’s a must-see for Cage fans.
Struggling with his career prospects, his relationship with his teenage daughter and his massive hotel bill, actor Nick Cage (Cage) accepts the only offer his agent (Neil Patrick Harris) can produce: 1 million to appear at the birthday party of wealthy businessman Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal) in Mallorca.
On arrival, Javi turns out to be a mega-fan with a script he wants his idol to read, so he’s understandably dismayed when Cage...

We already knew that legendary composer John Williams would be returning to a galaxy far, far away to provide the score for Rian Johnson's upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But if a new rumor proves true, it could give us a window into Johnson's approach for the film.
Filmmaker Robert Meyer Burnett (Free Enterprise) recently tweeted the following:
There was a Last Jedi scoring session in La today. That's encouraging.

Last Jedi scoring update. Last Thursday was John Williams' 85th Birthday. He's conducting. Rian Johnson wants to use the score for editing.

As /Film points out, the idea that Johnson wants to use a completed (or partially-completed) score runs contrary to the typical post-production process, in which an editor works with a director using temp tracks as music to craft the cut of the movie, and...

Caitlyn Jenner's conservative politics continue to create controversy in the transgender community.
When asked who she supports for president, the lifelong Republican told The Advocate in an interview Wednesday, "I like Ted Cruz."
"I think he's very conservative, and a great constitutionalist, and a very articulate man," she explained. "I haven't endorsed him or anything like that. But I also think, he's an evangelical Christian, and probably one of the worst ones when it comes to trans issues."
During a radio interview in November, Cruz called the movement for gender-open bathrooms in schools "lunacy."

Earlier this year, a prelude to a Star Trek fan film was released called Axanar. I've posted that 21-minute short for you to watch below. That short was crowdfunded and it served as a stepping stone to a much larger project. The team that made that launched another crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a full-length feature film, and so far it has raised over $1.13 million.
Over the years, Paramount and CBS — the rights holders to the Star Trek franchise — have supported fan films and even encouraged them at times! But this week they slapped the production company of this Star Trek film with a lawsuit. I guess it just got too big for them, and they felt threatened by it.
It probably didn't help that Axanar is officially described as the "first independent" Star Trek film, and not a fan film. Here's the official description of the project:

Across film and TV, there have been many Star Trek projects that never got the greenlight. Such as these...
Since 1964 (yep) there have been Star Trek projects that simply didn't make it to the big or small screen. And before Star Trek's second (proper) coming in 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the franchise had more than its fair share of attempts to come to life, and then be reborn.
This lot in fact...
Star Trek – The (original) Original Series
Here's a thought – the original Star Trek series wasn't supposed to be the original Star Trek series.
The pilot that sold the show to NBC was in fact the second pilot, after the original, entitled The Cage, filmed at the end of 1964, was deemed too cerebral. That's on top of having other multiple issues that TV executives (and test audiences) of the time couldn't cope with – you know, like gender equality in the workplace.

If there’s one personality comedians love to parody, it’s William Shatner. And if there’s one person who will do so more than the comedians, it’s William Shatner himself. In a career spanning decades it is almost as if the number of self parodying performances outnumber his other, more serious(ish) acting parts.
From Airplane II to ultimate Star Wars homage Fanboys, Shatner has appeared in a broad range of feature films that would not have been possible were it not for his now classic, larger than life, self depreciating style. In fact he only agreed to appear in indie flick Free Enterprise if his portrayal of himself was intentionally exaggerated. As such he is credited as playing the characer of “Bill”.
Likewise, television audiences have similarly been entertained by his performances as “William Shatner” ever since his turn at hosting Saturday Night Live back in 1986. Whilst...

"Duck Dynasty," "Shark Tank" and "The Bible" were among the big TV winners at the 22nd Annual Movieguide Faith & Values Awards on Friday (Feb. 7). But what exactly are these awards?
Organized by Movieguide publisher Ted Baehr, the Faith & Values Awards reward spiritual seriousness in Hollywood by analyzing films and TV shows according to biblical theology and negative factors (worldviews that are pagan, occult, humanist or derived from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a Genevan philosopher).
The ceremony, held at the Hilton Universal City, was filmed for a one-hour Reelz Channel special set to air March 1 as counter-programming to the Oscars. Below is the full list of film and TV series who were honored at the event.
$100,000 Epiphany Prize for Most Inspiring Television Program of 2013: "The Bible"
$100,000 Epiphany Prize for Most Inspiring Movie of 2013: "Grace Unplugged"

Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

Well, Sound on Sight’s Locations Month is coming to a close. A lot of good articles about iconic locations have gone up. But there’s one left. The big one. One of the most iconic and enduring locations in both film and television.
That’s right kiddies, it’s time to talk about the Vasquez Rocks.

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!

When a young Star Trek fan who wanted to wear a Starfleet uniform to school got in a fight and knocked out, William Shatner came to him in a dream and told him to stop dressing like a geek. But when the kid reveals the real reason why he started the fight was because someone said Han Solo was cooler than Capt. Kirk, Shatner responded dryly: "Kick the little fucker's ass." That was 13 years ago in the independent film "Free Enterprise" (which starred a pre-"Will & Grace" Eric McCormack). But it looks like Shatner, now 80, isn't ready to let the debate end there. The former Capt. Kirk told an interviewer this past week that not only was Star Trek better than Star Wars, but that Star Wars was actually a derivative of the Gene Roddenberry creation. "Star Wars did have one thing Star ...

Robert Meyer Burnett is living proof that the geeks have taken over. A lifelong fan of horror, science fiction and fantasy – who waved his freak flag high and proud in his film directorial debut Free Enterprise – Burnett has worked as a producer on The Hills Run Red and as an editor and director on behind-the-scenes documentaries for DVDs ranging from Tron to Superman Returns to Fantasia. His latest project is Cinemax's Femme Fatales, on which he serves as director and editor. I caught up with Burnett on the Femme Fatales set earlier this summer, where he talked about the challenges of crafting a weekly anthology series in today's world, and how his show is opening the door for more genre offerings from Cinemax....

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Whether or not William Shatner ever reprises his role as Captain Kirk in a real, canonical Star Trek movie again, he will always be inextricably tied to the series. Earlier in his career, specifically the time right after NBC canceled the original series after only three seasons* and up through most of the 90s (more or less until Free Enterprise was released), Shatner actively tried to distance himself from the character that made him a household name. As he has gotten older, and I suppose as those residual checks continued to come in the mail, the man who also played T.J. Hooker has finally accepted his captain's chair, embracing the stilted caricature everyone already saw in him.
Arguably, the reason the last decade has seen some of Shatner's biggest career successes is because rediscovering his inner Kirk is the one thing that is markedly different from what came before. So,...

The first screening of Martin Campbell's Green Lantern happened on Sunday night in Hollywood, and the early response so far has been very positive. Read some tweets and quotes after the jump. Robert Meyer Burnett (director of Free Enterprise) on Twitter [1]: Green Lantern fucking Rocked. The 3D was Awesome. As a lifelong DC fan, the opening ten minutes made me squeal like schoolgirl. ... Believe it. The first ten minutes will make you believe. The 3D is also outstanding. ... Green Lantern was terrific fun. The fact that it works at all is a miracle, but it really does cook. The first ten minutes sold me. ... The 3D in the opening ten minutes is wonderful. But You Must see it with polarized glasses. The color is great. ... It's not campy at all. The humor is earned. And Mark Strong as Sinestro was Awesome. ... I Loved Green Lantern. Don't know why,...

Tomorrow night — yes, Friday the 13th — a new show is premiering on Cinemax, that purveyor of inspirational After Dark programming such as Zane's Sex Chronicles and Co-Ed Confidential 4Play. It's called Femme Fatales and I don't know if it will be any good, but it just might be better than it needs to be.
Femme Fatales is being promoted as a female-centric film noir version of The Twilight Zone, drawing influences from pulp fiction stories and graphic novels, with lots of T&A. It comes to us from the overstimulated minds of Mark A. Altman and Steven Kriozere, which seems weird at first because both of these guys have respectable day jobs in network television. But it starts to make sense when you realize they also have a bit of experience with the ol' slap and tickle.
Altman and Kriozere work as producers on Castle, the ABC detective romp starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Kanic.

It was revealed recently that filmmaker Bryan Singer pitched a new Star Trek TV series called Star Trek: Federation, but it ultimately never happened, which is a shame because it sounds like it would have been a really good series. Singer is a big Trek fan and he even appeared in an uncredited role on Star Trek: Nemesis.
According to a great report from TrekMovie, in 2005 Singer was having dinner with screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and director Robert Meyer Burnett (Free Enterprise) one night. During that dinner the three of them started talking about the idea of pitching a new Star Trek series that would fill the gap left by Star Trek: Enterprise, which had just been cancelled. So Burnett recruited screenwriter Geoffrey Thorne (Leverage) to help create a 25-page series proposal outlining the show, and what it would be.

Star Trek fever is starting to grip us here at Obsessed With Film as the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ impossibly brilliant 2009 franchise reboot gears up to film this summer. Add to that, soon our very own Simon Gallagher will beam up an essay on his own desire to see a new Star Trek TV show put into production and what he hopes it might revolve around. As coincidence would have it, this may turn out to be perfect timing as Trek Movie (thanks to /film for passing on the link) have gotten their hands on an actual Star Trek TV proposal for a show that might have been but sadly wasn’t.

[1] A little while back, Star Trek: The Next Generation actor and director Jonathan Frakes revealed that director Bryan Singer (X-Men) once had a pitch for a Star Trek television show that never came to fruition. Singer is a well-known Trek fan, and thanks to some string-pulling by X-Men and Star Trek star Patrick Stewart, has even appeared in an uncredited role on Star Trek: Nemesis. Recently, more details have come to light about Singer's failed Star Trek proposal. Read on after the jump to fantasize about what could've been. Danny Dyer has become the byword for low-budget, no-quality Brit-trash cinema, but beneath the cockney swagger there's a decent actor struggling to get out. Stuart Heritage comes to the rescue
Last Tuesday saw the premiere of a new Danny Dyer film, Basement (the Daily Mail reported that the most glamorous guest at the event was someone who came third on Big Brother in 2006). Admittedly a new Dyer film is not really news, given that he knocks them out with such exhausting frequency that he makes Nicolas Cage look like Jd Salinger. In fact, he's got another one, The Last Seven, coming out next week. By the end of the year, Dyer will have starred in 20 films since 2004, with enough spare time to squeeze in 11 TV shows, two plays, a Grand Theft Auto game, countless radio commercials for everything from UKTV Gold to Exchange & Mart, his online store (where you can...

Lovely Alicia Witt has been added to the cast of the long awaited sequel of the 1998 comedy Free Enterprise.
Witt will join William Shatner in the sequel to this romantic comedy movie about “two aspiring nerdy movie makers who meet their idol, Shatner.”
The original movie has gone on to become kind of a cult-geeks-classic, and also starred Erick McCormack and Rafer Weigel.
The plot revolved around two wannabe filmmakers and Star Trek nerds, who finally meet their idol: William Shatner. Shatner turns out to not be the strong, confident leader they were expecting. In fact he’s the total opposite.
So, Shatner has previously confirmed that he would be back for the sequel saying: “Free Enterprise…remember the film? Well we are doing a sequel, Free Enterprise 2.
So they have got me involved in some fun stuff. And I will be shooting that in the next month or so.

Isaiah Mustafa is becoming increasingly popular with every Old Spice commercial that he appears in, but he is looking for a bit more than simply be the spokesman of a deodorant company, he wants to become a film actor. "Well I'm starting on a movie Monday that's called 'Free Enterprise 2'," Mustafa told G4. "It's a sequel to the cult classic 'Free Enterprise' about comic books. I'm a comic junkie myself." He added: "I will say this... please, get this thing going. I want to be Luke Cage, Ok ! I want to be Luke Cage! You have no idea, I mean really, yes. I made a dream board of it and put my face on the comic. I said I want to be Luke Cage one day." We've already heard that Marvel may bring Luke Cage to the big screen after "The Avengers." But is Mustafa the right man for the job?...

Free Enterprise 2, the follow-up to the William Shatner-starring late '90s indie film, could be adding Alicia Witt and Eliza Dushku to its cast list. Both geek-loving actresses have recently been Tweeting about a 12 year old movie that not many people will have seen, hinting that they could be involved in the geek-quel. Somebody who is definitely back is William Shatner, clearly eager not to be overlooked again as he was with J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. Not that his return will be that demanding – Shatner’s just required...

While watching Reed Farrington pass up the purchase of the special edition DVD of Free Enterprise for $1.99 last week while shopping in the U.S., I knew that he would soon live to regret it. Now that it looks like a sequel is finally happening, he's definitely going to wish he had the extended cut and the audio commentary by the cast, crew, and William Shatner to catch up on this cult classic before continuing with the saga. Shatner apparently revealed at TrekExpo in Tulsa, Ok last week that Free Enterprise 2 will be shooting sometime this summer, even though director Robert Meyer Burnett has been a little less forthcoming about it. For those who haven't seen it, Free Enterprise is a 1999 comedy about two Trekkies grappling with a mid-life crisis who seek advice from their idol, William Shatner. The proposed sequel is rumoured to be called Free Enterprise: The Wrath of Shatner,...

A sequel to Free Enterprise is finally happening, and over the past couple week's we've been hearing rumblings on the casting front. If you haven't yet watched Robert Meyer Burnett's 1998 indie film, it can be easily described as Swingers for sci-fi geeks. It was about two aspiring La filmmakers/Trek geeks who meet their screen idol, William Shatner (played by himself), who turns out to be nothing like the person they had imagined. The film has gone on to become something of a cult classic among geeks, and I highly recommend you check it out. Last week we reported that William Shatner has confirmed that he would be returning for the sequel, with plans to begin shooting later in July. Isaiah Mustafa, the guy who appears in the Old Spice commercials, revealed that he also has a role in the upcoming project while appearing on G4. And last week...

I've been hearing about a possible sequel to Free Enterprise for over ten years now. I really thought it was a pipe dream that would never happen. But apparently the sequel is actually happening, likely thanks to the recent jump in Trek popularity thanks to the Jj Abrams' Star Trek-reboot. Burnett has been trying to get a sequel greenlit for years now, and it is now falling into place. William Shatner revealed last week that...
