Fictionalising a real-life suicide is an tricky job, primarily because the person whose tale you’re telling isn’t around to give their side of the story. On top of that, you’re making a drama with an unavoidable downer ending, you have to deal with understandably suspicious family members and friends of the deceased and, well, you’re being a bit of a vulture.
Antonio Campos’ Christine gracefully sidesteps these obstacles, presenting us with a sensitive, compelling and fantastically performed drama about a woman pushed over the edge. That woman is Christine Chubbuck, who killed herself while delivering a live news report. While her name might not be immediately familiar, the legend of the news reporter who committed suicide on air certainly is.
Set in Sarasota, Florida in 1974, we’re introduced to Chubbuck (Rebecca Hall) pretending to interview President Nixon. The camera pulls back to reveal an empty chair...

For his first feature Sleepwalk with Me, comedian-turned-director Mike Birbiglia adapted his semi-autobiographical one-man show, picking apart his anxieties and fears when it comes to the most personal aspects of his life. His follow-up, Don’t Think Twice, presents a perhaps even more insular world, that of the New York improv comedy scene and more specifically, the shifting dynamics of a single group.
Made up of founding member Miles (Birbiglia), Jack (Keegan-Michael Key), Samantha (Gillian Jacobs), Allison (Kate Micucci), Lindsay (Tami Sagher), and Bill (Chris Gethard), the tight-knit troupe goes by the name of The Commune. Whether they succeed or fall flat on any given night, they don’t break any of their rules: always say “yes,” it’s all about the group, and don’t think. They may hold jobs as a delivery man, a hostess or a hummus sample provider, but they live and breathe for that small...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2015 discoveries”.
Nick Case: 1.) Recording Artists: They aren’t brand new bands, but I listed to Lord Huron and Dawes a lot, so they were discoveries to me. 2.) Restaurant: Sisters of the New South in Savannah. Most delicious soul food I’ve ever had…and I’m from Memphis. 3.) Author: Rick Bragg. I finally started reading his works after living in Alabama. Must-read is ‘All Over but the Shoutin’.
Lavallee: Christine sees Antonio Campos reteam with cinematographer Joe Anderson. Was wondering if you could describe the type of synergy/working relationship between them.
Case: I lived in a condo with Antonio & Joe for a week during prep and it was a pleasure to see them watch films together, discuss photography books, and design the look of the film. Given that they have worked together before, they have a very natural chemistry on...

If Cannes’ Thierry Frémaux doesn’t snag it away first, we might be chalking this unsettling piece of cinema as yet another Park City homecoming for the Borderline films crew. Ever since Afterschool was launched in Cannes back in 2008, their string of feature films Martha Marcy May Marlene (Sean Durkin), Antonio Campos‘ sophomore film Simon Killer, James White (Josh Mond) plus the award-winning short Mary Last Seen all got their starts at this January set fest. While creative collaborators such as dp Joe Anderson and composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans return to the fold, Campos’ third film is a departure of sorts as he works from a screenplay other than his own, and very busy filmmakers in their own right in Durkin and Mond are on board in the executive producer roles. Production on Christine took place last May, so this will indeed to fit to go. Rebecca Hall...

Seeking out substantial leading characters of complexity within independent dramas in recent years, Richard Gere has delivered accomplished performances in Arbitrage and Time Out of Mind. He’s now found another with The Benefactor (formerly known as Franny), the directorial debut of Andrew Renzi, which follows Gere as the title character, a profoundly rich philanthropist who enjoys helping out those close to him while he struggles with his own demons of addiction. Also starring Dakota Fanning, Theo James, Cheryl Hines, and Dylan Baker, the first trailer has now landed today ahead of a January release.
We said in our review, “Gorgeously shot on 35mm film by Joe Anderson (who has worked on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Martha Marcy May Marlene), there’s a richness to the cinematography that, along with the central performance, hearkens back to a character study from a few decades prior. Captain America: Civil War & Story of Your Life: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Renner will appear as Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War. Ioncinema.com’s Ioncinephile of the Month feature focuses on an emerging filmmaker from the world of cinema. Prior to the film’s TriBeCa Film Festival world premiere debut, we’ve had the pleasure to profile Lance Edmands on a couple of occasions, namely, our In the Pipeline spotlight. Matching the frigid, desolate Maine backdrop with a communal sense of sorrow, Bluebird features an outstanding group performance with Amy Morton leading a cast comprised of Louisa Krause, Emily Meade, Margo Martindale, Adam Driver and John Slattery (the Karlovy Vary Film Festival honored the four women). Usually, we get more into the mechanics of the film, but we took the opportunity to discuss technology and distribution – both changed tremendously during the film’s journey. Here’s this month (February/March) profile on Lance, and as always, make sure to click on over to his Top Ten Films of All Time list...

TVLine reports that Glenn Fleshler (True Detective) will play Cordell Doemling, yet another familiar name to fans of Thomas Harris’ books and the Hannibal Lecter movies. Moving from producer hat-wearing days (Afterschool, Two Gates of Sleep) to firmly stippling Park City with a metaphysical, deeply humane and serene portraits The Fort (2012) and Karaoke! (2013), Andrew Renzi saddled into feature filmmaking earlier this year with dual projects, the birth of Fishtail, the docu 16mm set in Montana and narrated by Harry Dean Stanton was the first to push out (’14 Tribeca/ Karlovy Vary), while his narrative feature debut appears to be close to going into labor. Production on the 2013 January Screenwriters Lab Franny began last October, with Richard Gere, Dakota Fanning and Theo James balancing on a tightrope act. On the tech side we find cinematographer Joe Anderson (Simon Killer), plus a Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans signed score (Enemy).
Gist: Gere will play a fun-loving, hedonistic philanthropist who works his way into the lives of a newlywed couple (Dakota Fanning, Theo James) to recapture the life he once had.

Cinematographer Joe Anderson spoke to us about filming Toby Halbrooks' short "Dig" and Ben Cotner and Ryan White's "The Case Against 8." "Dig" shows the perspective of a young girl who watches her father dig a hole in their backyard while "The Case Against 8" is a documentary about the trial that lead to the appeal of Proposition 8. Anderson previously worked on 2012 Sundance entry "Simon Killer" and short "Karaoke!." What camera and lens did you use? For "Dig," we shot with the Arri Alexa and old Cooke Speed Pancros. For "The Case Against 8" we shot with the Sony F3 and the Canon 30-105 along with the Sony Ex-3. What was the most difficult shot in your movie, and how did you pull it off? Regarding Dig: Imagine shooting with four children in the Texas summer heat! Every single shot we pulled off was a miracle. Luckily the...

Aside from quality projections, there is nothing that arouses me more during a festival than to get the feeling of communal caring for the 7th art. Day 2, 9:00 a.m’s screening of Jerry Schatzberg’s Scarecrow (see fest pic below) was packed with Karlovy Vary patrons (the demo are an enthusiastic mid 20′s to early 30′s type crowd) and this trickled onto my screenings of “films from the past” in Afterschool and Reprise. As part of Schatzberg’s homage, both Puzzle of Downfall Child (1970) and The Panic in Needle Park (1971) will be shown. Starring the oddball pairing of a fun to watch, improvisational not-yet-bark full of bite Al Pacino and layered Gene Hackman, this digitally projected copy of the film happened to be was my first ever viewing of the road movie that won big in 73′ edition of Cannes (The Conversation, also starring Hackman would win the same prize...

One time a woman went at Rob Pattinson with a pair of scissors! Can you believe it? We know Robert Pattinson is one of the most famous guys in the world, but one fan took things a little too far recently when she tried to go after his luscious locks. That's just not cool! Rob's Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2 co-star Joe Anderson told The Sioux City Journal about one of the craziest fan encounters we've ever heard. "A woman was standing outside the Sutton Place in Vancouver with a pair of scissors," he said. "She had flown from England to cut some of Robert Pattinson's hair for a doll." Don't get us wrong, we're obsessed with R-Patz just like everyone else. However, we'd Never fly across the world with a pair of scissors and try to chop off his hair. That's nuts! What's the craziest thing you would do with Rob?...

Before Sean Durkin took Sundance by storm last year with his deeply affecting psychological thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene, he and his production team at Borderline Films (made up of Durkin, Antonio Campos and Josh Mond) had wrapped another feature. Shot on-location in Paris and unveiled just over a year later, Simon Killer, the sophomore effort from Afterschool director Antonio Campos, continues in the filmmaking trio’s series of dark, gripping character studies.
Brady Corbet is Simon, a heartbroken, confused college graduate who arrives in Paris with no plans other than to visit art galleries, tourist spots and ponder over a freshly expired five-year relationship. With a sense of bitter loneliness and his iPod in hand, we follow him around the city of lights, bumming cigarettes and trying to establish any sort of human contact. Back in his hotel room, he masturbates and writes detailed letters to his past love.
