The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.
Later, the Documentary prize went to Errol Morris...

Updated with Vice statement: More than 75 current and former writers for HBO have signed a petition calling on Vice Media “to sign a strong union contract” with the WGA. Coming away from the opening night Tiff premiere of his Netflix epic Outlaw King, the filmmaker has cut 20 minutes from the movie before its Oct. 17 debut at the London Film Festival, spurred by the Toronto audience response.

The pic takes place during the course of a riveting period of Bruce’s life between 1304 to 1307 whereby he squared off with Edward I, the English sovereign, and unified a splintered Scotland.

Two years ago, director David Mackenzie got a career best performance out of Chris Pine in the Oscar nominated Hell or High Water. Easily the best film of that year, it was a total surprise, in the best way possible. The filmmaker and the actor had never hit those levels before, making the thought of a second collaboration rather tantalizing. Well, it has happened. Yesterday, a Trailer dropped for Outlaw King, the newest film from Mackenzie, with Pine in the juicy lead role. It’s one of the big Netflix releases for 2018, even getting a theatrical release. You can see the first real look at the flick below, but first, as always…some discussion. This film is a biographical drama with some big action moments, at least judging by what we’ve seen so far. IMDb lists the plot as such: “A true David v Goliath story of how the...

From the sun-kissed wild west to the rolling hills of the Scottish Highlands, Deadline brings word today that writer-director David Mackenzie, Chris Pine and Ben Foster – the three driving forces behind last year’s Oscar-nominated hit Hell or High Water – have entered talks to spearhead Netflix’s sweeping period drama, Outlaw King.
It’s a package bursting with cinematic promise, and word of those negotiations come just as Scott Stuber assumes the role of Netflix’s head of feature films. Rooted in a similar time period as that of Mel Gibson’s seminal Braveheart, Outlaw King presents Robert the Bruce through a slightly different lens, as he leads his country to freedom from the oppressive rule of England. Chris Pine is reportedly poised to take up arms as the former Scottish king, with Ben Foster negotiating a deal to play James Douglas, the “Scottish knight who became the king’s chief adviser.

A new play that reads very well on the page risks getting staged above its station. Sad to say, The Mystery of Love & Sex, by Bathsheba Doran, is that kind: engrossing in theory, a botch in practice. Commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater and given a top-flight production there, it might, ironically, have benefited more from shabbier treatment, a process that could have revealed its substantial flaws while there was still time and freedom to do something about them. But when you’ve got Tony Shalhoub and Diane Lane engaged to play two of the four leading characters, and Sam Gold directing, plus all the professional polish Lct typically provides, there’s not much to be done but leave the audience to enjoy what it can and wish the rest were better. There’s no mystery why such talents were drawn to the material. Shalhoub and Lane have meaty roles as Howard and Lucinda,...

Having written two biographies of gay men, I must confess that I don’t find coming-out-of-the-closet tales very interesting. There’s such a strict formula to the genre: The “I’m bisexual”ruse, the eventful First Time followed by lots of anonymous sex, the admission to family, that family’s rejection followed by some of the family’s acceptance, etc. In recent years, at least on stage, the “out” story line appears to have eclipsed the hetero “how I lost my virginity” version, which peaked with “The Summer of ’42” and has never recovered from the “American Pie” franchise. Joining co-creators and stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein in “Portlandia” this time around will be Vanessa Bayer (“Saturday Night Live”), Kirsten Dunst (“Spider-Man”), singer-songwriter k.d. lang, Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids”), Nick Swardson (“Reno 911!)” and plenty more. Paul Allen and members of the Portland Trail Blazers will also visit the beloved but oddball world this season. Malcolm McDowell (Franklin & Bash) is set to co-star opposite Gael García Bernal in Amazon’s comedy pilot Mozart In The Jungle, directed by Paul Weitz. Based on the memoir by Blair Tindal, the project, written by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers, is all about sex, drugs and classical music and shows that what happens behind the curtains at the symphony can be just as captivating as what happens onstage. McDowell plays Thomas, a seasoned conductor being forced into retirement by the arrival of hotshot new conductor Rodrigo (Bernal). Also cast in the pilot are Lola Kirke (Reaching For The Moon) as the impressionable oboist Hailey, Bernadette Peters (Smash) as Gloria, the Chairwoman of the Board of the symphony, Saffron Burrows (Law And Order: Ci) as Cynthia, a cellist in the middle of an affair with Thomas, Peter Vack (Cbgb) as Joshua, a talented dancer out of Juilliard who becomes Hailey’s love interest,...

The Walking Dead’s ratings are big. Like really, really big.
It’s actually become a tad difficult to describe how big they are. AMC’s zombie drama is huge among total viewers — averaging nearly 19.9 million per episode when including seven days of DVR playback. But what’s truly stunning is the show’s adults 18-49 rating, the number that matters most to advertisers. That most recent average rating — a 10.3 with DVR — is second to nothing. Which makes comparisons tricky. So I put together this guide to give The Walking Dead’s dominance some perspective. Note: Every show’s average...

TV Land has ordered 10 more episodes of The Exes, expanding the comedy’s third season and bringing more jokes about accidental homeroticsm to TV Land.
The Exes
Fox is planning a Family Guy crossover episode of The Simpsons where a road trip takes the Griffin family to Springfield, EW reports. Considering that dogs and babies don’t talk in the Simpsons universe, I’m figuring this is going to be more awkward than that time The Critic came to Springfield.
Remember Firefly, Bart? It’s back, in Pog multi-user online role-playing game for smartphones and tablets form. I have a bad feeling about this.
I have a weakness for big marketing stunts. I guess I just like the spectacle. (That’s probably why I spend this weekend every year with an ache in my chest.) Thus, I love the idea of leaving a sculpture of a dragon skull at...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.
None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't become series including the high-profile Charlize Theron-produced drama about the Hatfields and McCoys, the Bruckheimer-produced...

The new fall season is closer than you think, and NBC has released their full schedule. Apart from reality favorites The Biggest Loser and The Voice, they are mixing things up quite a bit.
Take a look at a complete preview of the shows coming your way, and mark your calendars. It looks good for NBC this year, and while I’m not sure all of these look like winners, I think you’ll find at least a couple that you’re really going to like.

James Spader returns to NBC with "The Blacklist" on this fall.
The "Office" alum and longtime "Boston Legal" star returns to the spotlight on the Peacock network and this time, instead of upholding the law (albeit via blackmail, bribery and the like), he's breaking it. In NBC's upcoming series "The Blacklist," Spader stars as Raymond “Red” Reddington, the most wanted man in the world.
Check out Spader and his devilish ways below in NBC's new four-minute trailer for "The Blacklist", as well as two new preview clips, and scroll down for more previews and official descriptions of the new series on NBC's 2013-2014 schedule: the “Ironside" remake starring Blair Underwood, the new Mike O'Malley comedy "Welcome To The Family," Sean Hayes' return to sitcoms with "Sean Saves The World," and, of course, the highly-anticipated "Michael J. Fox Show."

Chicago – When you’re in as much of a ratings struggle as NBC, it makes sense to shake things up and that’s exactly what they’re doing in the Fall with a new show or an old show in a new time every single night of the week. “Chicago Fire,” “Revolution,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Parenthood” are moving. “Community” is being held until a midseason, 13-episode run. No decision yet made on “Celebrity Apprentice” or “Hannibal,” which isn’t that surprising as they are mid-season shows anyway although it shouldn’t give fans of either program confidence as NBC announced a midseason schedule as well and they’re not on it. Anything could still happen with either program however and they could be held as replacements for shows that fail. That may be the best shot for “Hannibal” fans now. The best new show on the...

Written, directed and edited by Micah Brock, and inspired by the beat em up games of the early 1990′s such as Streets of Rage, Final Fight and Double Dragon, Slug Street Scrappers 3 is a fantastic independent action movie that features a whole wealth of martial artists including Shaun Charney, Katelyn Brooke, Micah “Kwonkicker” Brock, Anna Ranoso, Tess Kielhamer, Dominic Sherman, Andy Le, Brian Le, Mari Saito, Rocky Chavez, Maggie Clarke, Narayana Cabral, Mason Sharrow, Joe Clarke and Blake Lindquist.
Bruiser Bom-Bash, a man who holds the coveted Scrapper title of, “Toughest in Town”, is well-known on Slug Street… and well-loathed. He is particularly hated by former title-holder, Peaches Powers (who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend). To this day, Peaches has never learned why she was dumped by Bruiser, and has never forgiven him for it. But, when new facts about the purpose of the Slug Street Scrappers come to light,...

Smash, Season 2, Episode 12: “Opening Night”
Written by: Bathsheba Doran & Noelle Valdivia
Directed by: Michael Morris
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on NBC
When the term “opening night” is used in reference to a Broadway show or any type of theatre for that matter, it can evoke a nervous, edge of your seat feeling. Will the actors remember all their lines and cues? How will the press react? What will the audience think? Is it going to spark sold-out performances for the rest of its run? So when an episode of Smash titles itself “Opening Night” one can only hope it will be suspenseful and fill us (that tiny Smash audience that’s hanging on by the thinest piece of thread) with anxiety. But “Opening Night” completely fizzles out and lamely rests on plot lines Smash continues to rehash.

Smash, Season 2, Episode 4: “The Song”
Written by: Bathsheba Doran
Directed by: Michael Morris
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm (Et) on NBC
Welcome to the Jennifer Hudson hour. Oops, I totally meant Smash. It is difficult not to pick on the news kids in class, and Jennifer Hudson does it make it easy because she is essentially the same character in everything she does. But finally, (Finally) we get a quality episode of Smash, something we haven’t seen since midway through the first season. There still exist a few kinks to be worked out, but it seems all those hopes and dreams we had for a better season are finally coming to fruition. There was a delightful balance of new and old characters- newer characters were allowed to shine alongside older characters who continued to preform those loving quirks- combined with some of the show’s best songs. Tonight’s episode was a hit!

When Frank Darabont was fired from the production of The Walking Dead by AMC for reasons still unconfirmed, fire and brimstone rained on the cable executives from fans and even actors, like this recent ParanormalPopCulture video that surfaced with Sam Witwer offering his support for the fallen filmmaker. But Darabont vowed a return to television and TNT announced Monday that they have ordered a pilot for a drama series called L.A. Noir and is based on John Buntin’s book L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America’s Most Seductive City. Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) will write and direct the pilot and will be one of the executive producers with Michael De Luca (The Social Network, Moneyball) and Elliot Webb (Tall Time Tales).

2012 Writers Guild Award Nominations
The 2012 Writers Guild Award nominations were announced yesterday and as with the Emmys cable led the drama categories. Previous nominees Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad and new series Homeland all racked up 3 nominations in the drama field. The Good Wife is the only network drama featuring in the Drama Series category, with Dexter getting the other slot and sadly Friday Night Lights missed out.
If you're wondering where Mad Men is; the field of eligibility for these awards runs from December, 1 2010 until November 30, 2011. This makes the Writers Guild Awards similar to the Golden Globes rather than the Emmys regarding the submission time frame. The last new episode of Mad Men aired in October 2010 so it can't be included; yes it has been more than a year since there was new episode of Mad Men.
Network fared much better in the comedy front with Emmy success Modern Family...
