Indonesia has recently gained momentum in producing numerous captivating films. Since the 21st century, Indonesian cinema, particularly in the realm of independent films, has experienced a remarkable resurgence. These films have found their way to prestigious film festivals, earning acclaim through notable awards. Today, the domestic market in Indonesia—with its fourth-largest population—is undergoing expansion due to the rise in screen numbers, especially in multiplexes, with local productions having captured the majority of the market share. Furthermore, as one of the countries with its film industry that made the fastest recovery from the pandemic, Indonesia is bolstering its cultural policies to nurture the film industry's growth and foster emerging Indonesian filmmakers.

“Coming 2 America” dominated the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 19 winning all three of its bids. The sequel to the comedy classic won both contemporary awards plus the special make-up prize. The period/character awards went to the makeup of “Cruella” and the hairstyling of “Being the Ricardos.”
This haul positions “Coming 2 America” well for the Academy Awards. In the first eight years of these guild awards, the eventual Oscar winner claimed at least one prize here first. Of its four rivals for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, only “Cruella” came away from here a winner. Both “House of Gucci” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” were bested in all three of their races while “Dune” was a two-time also-ran.
The Oscar and Emmy-winning makeup artist Michèle Burke and the Emmy-winning hair stylist Joy Zapata were feted with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on January 11. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, eight are vying for these precursor prizes. “House of Gucci,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “The Suicide Squad” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Cruella,” “Dune” and “No Time to Die” earned two each; and “West Side Story” has one.
Two films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley” — were snubbed by the guild. Conversely, five of the Muahs favorites — “Being the Ricardos,” “Black Widow,” “Don’t Look Up,” “In the Heights” and “The Matrix Resurrections” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

“The Suicide Squad,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” lead the ninth annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild nominations (IATSE Local 706).
“The Suicide Squad,” released last August, was nominated in special makeup effects, contemporary makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” also landed three nominations, while “Dune” scored two nods. This bodes well for all the films which made the Oscar shortlist.
As previously announced, makeup artist Michèle Burke, known for her work on the Mission Impossible and Austin Powers franchises, and hairstylist Joy Zapata, who worked on “A Star is Born” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” will receive the 2022 Muahs Lifetime Achievement awards. The Distinguished Artisan award will be announced shortly.
The winners will be announced on Feb. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Now that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on winter hiatus, it’s time to set our sights on the production giant’s next small screen endeavor: Agent Carter.
The eight-episode series debuts next month and stars Hayley Atwell, who reprises her role of the titular Ssr agent from films like Captain America: The First Avenger and this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as appearances on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a starring role in her own eponymous Marvel One-Shot short film.
The series takes place after the events of The First Avenger, in a post-wwii America that finds Peggy Carter marginalized when male soldiers return home from fighting abroad. The few teasers we’ve seen from the show already promise a fun, pulpy series set in the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, we’ve been given a stylish new teaser poster to seal the deal,...

That's definitely something that you wouldn't want to say to Agent Peggy Carter, especially after seeing her kick some ass in this new action-packed spot for Marvel's Agent Carter. I'm really excited for this series, and I think it's so cool that Marvel managed to get the same actors from Captain America: The First Avenger to star in it.
The series stars Hayley Atwell, Chad Michael Murray as Ssr Agent Jack Thompson, Enver Gjokaj as Ssr Agent Daniel Sousa, James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, and Shea Whigham as Ssr Chief Roger Dooley. The series was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who are also currently writing Captain America: Civil War.

Marvel’s Agent Carter is heading your way on January 6th, and you can finally get a decent look at the show.
The next venture in the Marvel television universe is a different game from what people might expect, and has little in common with the film and television efforts people are used to seeing. That’s hard to call good or bad at first glance, but it’s certainly an interesting move. Adding to the confusion, my best guess is that if you’re a fan of Marvel’s Agents of Shield, that doesn’t necessarily translate into being a fan of this one. That means recommendations are a confused affair.
As much as I never took to Marvel’s AoS, especially considering that it is a show that would have been pulled after two months at most if not for the fact that it is a marketing vehicle...

ABC has released an extended sneak peek at Marvel's Agent Carter. It features a scene between Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), and it's good to see Howard again! It also introduces us to Stark's butler, Jarvis, who is played by James D'Arcy. The clip aired during Marvel's little self-promoting documentary, Marvel: 75 Years, From Pulp To Pop! So far everything I've seen from the show looks great, and I think this even has potential to be better than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but we'll just have to wait and see. You can find the full, detailed synopsis of the series under the clip.

It seems that these days, anything to do with superheroes or comic book adaptations is always ‘highly anticipated.’ With built-in, deeply loyal fanbases, DC and Marvel in particular tend to have audiences in the palms of their mighty corporate hands when it comes to new projects. While DC has staged a multi-pronged assault on TV viewers – with Gotham, Constantine and The Flash all launching this year, Marvel has been teasing its ace-in-the-hole, Agent Carter.
Heading to the small screen in early 2015, Agent Carter is the spinoff TV show for the supporting character from Captain America: The First Avenger. It will see fan favourite Hayley Atwell reprise her role, and Marvel recently released a teaser for the series, reminding us that when it comes to protecting the world, the best man for the job is actually a woman:

In a development that feels more inevitable than surprising, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are in talks to get back into the Bourne business. The two had sent mixed messages over the years, ever since Jason Bourne disappeared in the murky East River at the end of The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007, with the major roadblock being Damon’s insistence that a reluctant Greenglass direct, while Universal handed the franchise over to writer-turned-director Tony Gilroy. But with Gilroy’s Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner, failing to live up to the original three Bourne films at the box office, and Damon’s recent non-Bourne projects,...

It’s that most wonderful time of the year in which one group of people (journalists) try to figure out what another group of people (Academy members) think are the best films and performances of the year. Sure, we have the Guild nominees, critics awards, and general buzz but there’s only one thing that I can tell you for sure — one of the predictions below will be wrong. And yet we go out on that limb again every year.

You know a performance is powerful when you’re still thinking about it weeks after seeing the film. This is the case of the Lupita Nyong’o in Steve McQueen’s film adaptation of Solomon Northrup's 12 Years A Slave. She plays Patsey, an enslaved woman whom Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) meets after being sold to Edwin Epps’ New Orleans plantation. While there is little comparison between the two films, 12 Years A Slave and Django Unchained both feature enslaved black women in rare cinematic representations. However, Twelve Years A Slave does something that Django Unchained was unable to. It portrays fully realized black women who lived during slavery, and who had voices. In Django...

As much as genres like Westerns and musicals, the social issue historical drama often arrives in theatre as part of a cycle, one strong box office performance spurring on other producers’ projects. Sometimes a cycle can be re-started thanks to real-world events. The civil rights movement prodded the studios into releasing films that addressed the headlines, films like In The Heat Of The Night and Guess Who’S Coming To Dinner (and of course, the rise of the “blaxplotation” low-budget flicks) in the late sixties. By the mid 1970′s, most of the studios rarely tackled race relations, until a few late 80′s films like Driving Miss Daisy and the incendiary Do The Right Thing. But that subject popped up again just a few years ago, perhaps in part in response to the 2008 presidential elections. Most of these new films took a look at race through the lens of still fairly recent history.

Director: Steve McQueen; Screenwriter John Ridley; Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lupita Nyong'o, Brad Pitt; Running time: 133 mins; Certificate: 15
It will come as no surprise that Steve McQueen's real-life chronicle of a free man sold into slavery is a remarkable, unflinching, breathlessly affecting drama, the kind of film that leaves you winded. What's surprising is how few of McQueen's fingerprints are visible on 12 Years a Slave. The director's previous films have centred on a laser-focused portrait of a single character – Hunger's ardent Ira hunger striker Bobby Sands, and Shame's self-punishing sex addict Brandon – and the uncomfortable intimacy of these portrayals is a McQueen staple.
The 1840s-set story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who has his freedom, his family and even his name stripped from him in a single fateful evening, seems to offer the opportunity for another such rigorous character study. But this is overall a much broader,...

12 Years a Slave premiered at Telluride and was crowned the presumptive Oscar frontrunner in Toronto, but its screening at the New York Film Festival last night was a special sort of homecoming. The movie, based on an 1853 memoir, tells the story of a free black New Yorker from Saratoga named Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who is kidnapped and trafficked into Southern slavery, and some of Northrup’s descendants came to Manhattan from upstate to view the film with the Lincoln Center audience.

Eric Himan is a tattooed rocker from Tulsa, but his approach to songwriting is folkier than you’d expect, jazzy in a timeless way, and consummately sensitive. The out musician has also written many songs that represent a specifically gay point of view, and that still qualifies as a novel and kickass idea in 2013. He values his personal perspective and independence, and that comes across loud and clear — albeit breezily — in his cool and distinct music.
Himan’s new album Gracefully showcases that fierce honesty, and the disc’s striking video “Red Hot Tears” tells you almost everything you need to know about him: He’s commanding even when he’s announcing a teary-eyed weakness. And as you might remember, I personally can’t get enough of the song.
We caught up with Himan to discuss his songwriting influences, living in Tulsa, and his gay artistic hero of choice.

Last year, watching Quentin Tarantino’s pop slave drama Django Unchained, the cruelty on-screen could be hideous and shocking, but one thing it never was, at least to me, was terrifying. Even when the white-on-black violence left you drop-jawed, it was still part of a heightened Tarantino landscape of thrills and sick spectacle and kicky dark danger and revenge. But in Steve McQueen’s agonizingly magnificent 12 Years a Slave, which premiered last night in Toronto, a sense of terror is alive in almost every scene. To describe even one moment of this movie as a “kick” would be obscene. It...

What's it all about?
12 Years a Slave is the memoir of Solomon Northup, born free in upstate New York but sold into bondage in 1840s Louisiana. Directed by the British artist Steve McQueen, the film version casts Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup and Michael Fassbender (the star of McQueen's two previous features) as plantation owner Edwin Epps. Northup protests his innocence and demands his freedom. But the north is a memory and, amid the cotton plantations outside New Orleans, he realises that he is merely one of many faceless,...

Like many of Tarantino’s previous films Django Unchained is filled to the brim with film references. Below I’ve attempted to guide you through some of these references and links to other films.
I’ve only seen the film once at a screening and am sure that given the opportunity to sit down with the film on Blu-ray I will undoubtedly find even more, so the following is in no way definitive but hopefully provides some answers to for those wondering what Tarantino was referencing in Django Unchained. Also, most importantly, hopefully it will lead you to check out some of the films in question.
The most obvious film reference in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained is right there in the title. Django was a 1966 ‘spaghetti western’ directed by...

Released this week on DVD by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, we have two copies of Alcatraz: The Complete Series to give away to you, our lovely readers!
Revolving around America’s most infamous prison, the one-time home to the nation’s worst murderers, rapists, kidnappers, thieves and arsonists, Alcatraz boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Sam Neill (The Hunter, Wimbledon), Sarah Jones (House), Jeffrey Pierce (CSI), Parminder Nagra (Bend It Like Beckham, ER) and Jorge Garcia (Lost). When San Francisco Police Department detective Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones) is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: Jack Sylvane, (Jeffrey Pierce) an Alcatraz inmate who died over 30 years ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle, Ray Archer, were guards at the prison – Madsen’s interest is immediately piqued, and once the enigmatic government agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill) tries to impede her investigation,...

Fringe Review, Season 5, Episode 3: “The Recordist”
Written by Graham Roland
Directed by Jeff T. Thomas
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
This week, on Fringe: The team follows the first, well, third, Betamax and find what is hopefully some red Observer kryptonite
The Great Betamax Hunt is on and this week, it takes our heroes to the forest, which apparently still exists in this overly mechanized future. As in the past two episodes, “The Recordist” favors character moments over action, making it at this point perhaps the most talky sci-fi series since Star Trek: the Next Generation. That’s not to discount the story we get this week, but while the notion of a community of people documenting the human perspective of this new world is interesting, and the father-son story is compelling, it’s hard not to argue that the show is beginning to feel stagnant.

Channing Tatum has confirmed that they're looking at creating a sequel to Magic Mike. I'm honestly not sure where they'd go with it, with Tatum's character pursuing his post-stripper life, or if they follow the club to Miami. I honestly wasn't that impressed with the movie as a whole, which seemed to have an identity crisis. But I'll watch the previews of the stripping for a sequel.
But before he gets around to that, Channing is in negotiations to play Evel Knievel . I hope they don't hurt that beautiful body, plus how would he gyrate his hips if he broke all those bones?
Bruce Labruce has taken issue with Vice's A-z Guide To Being Gay. It's an interesting view, because his quibbles take issue with the stereotypes, but also with things like straight guys not being able to be seduced.

Christmas come early: Kinsey! Joan and Don! Baby Daddy Roger! This was fun.
Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks are electric on the screen together. It's impossible to think about anything else, so let's just start here. Joan has kept her cool in the office all season and what a relief to see her throw the airplane at Idiot Secretary's face. Just as Joan breaks down, Don swoops in to take her on a magic Jaguar ride. "Buying things makes people feel better." From the moment Don wraps his jacket around her, they turn into Superman and Wonder Woman; they're unstoppable. Joan immediately jumps into character at the dealership, and points to the hottest red car in the room. "Oh honey, what's that?" It's the most beautiful car ever made. The salesman dares to attempt to ride with Joan. What's that? Here's $6000 for you to get out of my way. And off they go,...

There’s a subgenre of modern television that blends the procedural tradition — weekly investigative stories with plots that wrap up in an hour — with the expansive narrative possibilities of a serialized drama. On paper, this mix seems like a can’t-miss formula for success: It’s Lost meets CSI! And the best practitioners of the “serialsodic” style can create great television that feels at once classical and modern: Think Justified, or Fringe, or The Good Wife, which can all serve up a tasty one-and-done episode plot while constantly building their overarching stories. The twist is that serialsodic shows rarely do well in the ratings.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

The 84th Academy Awards will pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. The perceived Oscar frontrunner, .The Artist,. is a black-and-white silent movie, while one of the Oscar Best Picture contenders, .Hugo,. touches upon the life of Georges Méliès and his magical .Trip to the Moon. (1902). Even Marilyn Monroe is being honored via a Best Actress nomination for Michelle Williams who played the icon in .My Week with Marilyn..
Amidst the glamour and the spectacle, this is one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent memory. There is no clear-cut favorite. Even the awards darling .The Artist. may lose its voice on Oscar night. But I am marching forward to reveal my fearless 2012 Oscar predictions. It’s a veritable Christmas morning for Hollywood today, as at 5 Am, a small, exclusive lucky group of folks were awoken to telephone calls congratulating them on their Oscar nominations. Ah yes, the Academy Awards, America’s most cherished ass kissing festival, where celebrities get showered with gifts, attention, fine foods and good wine, while we sit in our dimly lit offices shoveling the same mixed salad we’ve been eating every day for years into our mouths despite the fact that somehow we seem to be gaining weight. (Too personal, I digress. Snap out of it! — Cher) Anyway, today is that day of initial glee so many lucky folks in Hollywood will awake to. And then, of course, you have those that get famously snubbed. Ignored. Overlooked. Forgotten. No giftbag for you. Charlize Theron in Young Adult? Ryan Gosling???? You better Drive your ass out of here cause you...

HollywoodNews.com: Best Picture nominees: The Artist, The Help, The Descendants, War Horse, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, Tree of Life, Hugo, and the big surprise–Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Not nominated: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Bridesmaids. Other big shocks–Albert Brooks was not nominated for “Drive,” which is s a shame in the Best Supporting Actor category. His spot went to Max von Sydow in “Extremely.” Another big shock — “Tintin” was not nominated for Best Animated Feature. This is actually shocking. Leonardo DiCaprio was not nominated for “J Edgar” in Best Actor–his spot went to Damien Bachir in “A Better Place.” The other actor nominees were George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jean DuJardin, and Gary Oldman for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The latter film did much better than anyone could have guessed. Best Director went to Michel Hazanavicius, Alexander Payne, Woody Allen, Terrence Malick,...

It’s that special time of year when the line is drawn in the sand between moviegoers and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which revealed the nominees for the 84th Academy Awards earlier today, because there’s always disagreement over who got the nod and who got the shaft. Hit the jump to see if your favorites made the cut.
I haven’t seen many of the films on the list (Oscar and I rarely see eye-to-eye) but I am shocked that a few names are missing. Michael Fassbender, who seemed to own 2011, isn’t anywhere to be found? TinTin isn’t up for Best Animated Film? Drive gets a nod for sound editing and nothing else? Someone really got shafted there.
You can check out the list below and then find out who takes the little guy named Oscar home on Sunday, February 26, on ABC.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and I'm happy with the outcome. The one compliant I have is that Michael Shannon wasn't nominated for Best Actor for his role in Take Shelter. In my opinion that was the best performance I've seen all year. Andy Serkis also didn't get his nomination for playing Ceaser in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Hugo led the pack with 11 solid nominations, followed by The Artist with 10. Both Moneyball and War Horse nabbed six, and The Descendants and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ended up with five, but Fincher got snubbed for Best Director.
