Tobacco Roody (1970)
Something Weird knows how to pick them
18 November 2002
You can always count on Something Weird Video when your in the mood for some sleazy delights from the saucy days of the 70's. There is no story here, there is just flesh and more flesh. Wonton nudity is ubiquitous throughout this raunchy ride that has all the lascivious beauty's running amok.

Jackie Brown (1997)
Masterpiece
1 November 2002
Tarentino is a brilliant director and it is displayed in Jackie Brown. The tumultuous blacksploitation period of the 70's was the obvious precursor here. Pam Grier the 70's blacksploitation Queen gives an over the top performance as a middle aged air line stewardess and Samuel l Jackson steels the show as the seedy antagonist. The great thing about Jackie Brown is that Tarentino is in no rush at all. This film is effectively languid. Jackie Brown is not as ostentation as Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction but it does prove that Tarentino has diversity. Bring on Kill Bill.

The Ring (2002)
better than expected
23 October 2002
I have committed the ultimate sin by first watching the American remake over the original Japanese film. I'm actually not a fan of American remakes of great european and asian films. I feel that over 90% of the North American audience think that there watching some cool new themes and are completely oblivious to the far superior originals from abroad. This has happened with Open Your Eyes ( Vanilla sky ) and Erik Skjoldbjærg Insomnia. So last night I felt a little guilty viewing this American release of an original Japanese film even though I had no problem watching the lovely Naomi Watts ( Mullholland Drive ) for a couple of hours. This film was better than I expected with acting that was quite good. There were scenes that were very dark, in fact the film carried this ominous ambience throughout. Overall, a very entertaining creepfest.

Not for the weak hearted
15 October 2002
This has to be the best Joe d'amato film I've seen. The gore was extremely realistic and graphic which might turn some viewers off. In fact this has got to be one of the grisliest films I've seen. They are quite meticulous with the gore sequences here that even the most jaded viewers ( like myself )will cringe. At times during the movie I thought I was watching a Jeffrey Damner film. The sequence in which the hitchhiker becomes disemboweled and her body parts become the ingredients in an acid bath has got to be one of the most gruesome killings I've ever seen. It's too bad they don't make films like this anymore. Terrific.

Flawless acting, great dialogue and beautifully directed. It doesn't get much better than this. I thought this was far superior than 1990's Goodfellows but most people don't seem to think so. This is a very underrated film.

riveting
10 October 2002
This film has got to be the grandfather of all these sexual thrillers that came about back in the late 80's to mid 90's. This film should keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. It is just that good. Director Adrian Lyne's audio commentary on the dvd release is terrific along with flawless performances from Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. Why they didn't keep the original ending in tact with the film is beyond me but none the less it still was well done. For those of you that haven't seen the original ending of the film, please go out and purchase the dvd version. That ending alone is worth the 25$ you will pay for this disk.

I'm warning you
10 October 2002
This is not your typical Jean rollin film so don't expect any nocturnal creatures with lecherous plans lurking in fact don't expect much from this piece of tripe, period. This film lacks all the ingredients that have made Jean rollin the auteur he is today. Even the usually stunning Francoise Blanchard looked awful with that 80's hairdo. All Jean rollin fans stay away and rent any other Rollin film from the 70's instead.

The Beast (1975)
My God.
10 October 2002
This film has to be seen to be believed and to think I watched this one right after Andrea Bianchi's Malabimba. It sure was a double header night for me. This film cannot be taken seriously so all those fastidious viewers out there, beware. As for the rest of us lets sit back an enjoy a piece of history. This film is a classic that should be viewed by any twisted, demented, disturbed, perversed avid euro-trash fan that lives on this continent. Enjoy

Don't judge this film by it's poster art
8 October 2002
The film looks quite innocuous by it's poster art with what appears to be a young man captivated sexually by a older piano teacher. This is not what the films about. This picture is a dark descent into a middle aged woman's sexual repression. The Piano teacher is an extremely hard film to watch and to all those fastidious viewers, please beware. For those of you that stay on board, prepare yourself for some of the most nihilistic scenes you will ever witness.

Jason X (2001)
Welcome back Jason
5 October 2002
It's been a long 13 years since we've seen Jason slice his way through another installment of this series (We obviously don't count Jason goes to hell as an official Jason outing). In my opinion the last true Jason episode opened up May friday the 13th 1988. The last two Friday the 13th films were a calamity so I was thinking that this one would join the ranks of those two. In fact this was the first Friday the 13th I missed in the theater since Part 2(I was too young), so I wasn't expecting much from this one. Jason 10 boasts some of the worst acting of the series and the plot is as tenuous as it gets BUT that's not what we are viewing this for. There are a myriad of innovative deaths on display that offer us some of the goriest murders this series has to offer. Add a bevy of lascivious babes to this and a scene from Camp Crystal Lake and well What the Hell are people complaining about. After viewing the catastrophic events that unfolded in Jason Goes To Hell, just about anything they attempted next would work. If they would've released this film in 1994 right after Jason Goes To hell, this film would've been lauded just for the fact that we SEE Jason (not some bloody lizard that go's through bodies) slashing away on the screen. I'm not saying that this is a great film, it isn't. In fact I rank this better than only Part5,8 and 9 but at the end of the day our slasher hero from the 80's is back to slash today's generation. I hope they make another Friday the 13th and deposit Jason back into the woods where he belongs. If they do this and slot in copious nudity, sex and blood well we could finally have a Jason film rival some of the classics from the 80's.

those Italians are at it again...
2 October 2002
What a terrific giallo film! This time it is Giuliano Carnimeo taking control of the operation. All the giallo idiosyncracies are present with this one, along with the stunning giallo queen Edwige Fenech who found time to slip away from Sergio Martino. The ending is one of the best I've seen and of course the music was awesome.

Had potential
2 October 2002
An obvious catalyst to Nic Roeg's Don't Look Now. This film had a great first half but after that it sort of lost the plot a bit. The ending was horrible and some of the dialogue to risible. On the positive side, the settings were splendid and the music was harrowing at times. If your interested in Giallo films this is not the place to start your mission. Try Aldo Lado's far superior Short Night of Glass Dolls instead.

The Beyond (1981)
an acquired taste
18 September 2002
This film is not for everyone and probably wasn't for me. Although well done I didn't really enjoy the film and felt bored at times. Simply put Bettany is the only reason why I kept watching, he is a brilliant actor. Also does anyone know where I can buy that pin striped outfit Bettany was wearing. I can see that kit graduating into my wardrobe very soon.

The Beyond (1981)
fulci delivers
18 September 2002
This was one of fulci's better zombie films during Italy's tumultuous zombie era. The acting was descent and the gore ( although not as graphic as other fulci vehicles from that time frame ) plentiful. I thought the audio commentary from Catherine Macoll and David Warbeck was terrific. I recommend this film to all those avid gore fans. Enjoy.

Depeche in top mode
2 September 2002
This is simply terrific.Who said Depeche Mode were a band of the 80's. It took 1hr 45 minutes into the concert before the first track of the

80's was played. Come on people, what do you expect Mr Gahan to come out in those white jeans to sing people are people. Depeche Mode have grown up just like us fans who have followed them through their stupendous journey.I had the pleasure to witness this brilliant concert at three venues most notable the Gorge in George, Washington. Dave has never had this much energy and Martin came out of the shadows to deliver his most powerful performance yet. Most of the concert captures the mellifluous ambience of Exciter, which is a very tight sounding album. This is a must see for all Depeche Mode fans..

loved it!!!!!!!!!!!
3 August 2002
This is the best slasher flick to come out of the 80's. I haven't seen this film since 1988 and somehow I can remember the entire picture. The director should be lauded for the innovative ways the characters were killed. The repugnant death of the lascivious Aly could be one of the most memorable deaths to ever embrace the screen. I cannot wait to view the dvd released by anchor bay. Goodnight Campers..

Malabimba (1979)
a sexual imbroglio
29 July 2002
Wow, this was just great and to think it came from the director of Burial Ground( one of the best zombie films ) made it even better. The storyline is tenuous but who cares, there is enough licentious festivities happening to satisfy the most avid euro-trash followers. This sordid film is almost impossible to find but if you do find it purchase it because you will never see anything like it out there.

Delirium (1972)
renato polselli delivers again
29 July 2002
I thought that the impious happenings in the Reincarnation of Isabelle couldn't be surpassed. Well I proved myself wrong after I witnessed this little picture. Although i enjoyed the film, I felt a little disappointed at times. I thought that the character of Rita Calderoni was a little over the top and i just expected more with the sexual content. The dialogue became a little risible at times and the plot to predictable. I didn't care for the ending either but overall it worked. Don't forget to check out the domestic release that is featured on the anchor bay dvd and witness for yourself how the Americans can destroy a film.

29 July 2002
I was completely enthralled by this picture. This has to be not only one of the best Giallo's made but one of the best horror films. It has it all, beautiful woman, graphic murders, copious nudity, dubious dubbing, great suspense and a great musical score. All fans of the genre should not miss this one.

Great picture
28 July 2002
This in my opinion is the 2nd best installment in the series next to part 2. Sure the acting and storyline are dubious but that's not what we are here for. This was the the last true Friday the 13th that kept Jason in his familiar surroundings. Jason's appearance has never looked so grisly that if not for the mask you might think your watching an Italian zombie film. The only factor against jason in this film was not Lar Park Lincoln but the extremely fastidious MPAA. Come on Paramount release this Uncut.

Not impressed
12 July 2001
If your expecting another classic from Jean Rollin, then you will be very disappointed. It seemed that Mr. Rollin was poking fun at the work that made him the artist he is today. Avoid this and rent any Rollin film from the 70's instead.

Zombie Lake (1981)
entertaining
25 June 2001
What's with all the captous people out there towards this film. What do people expect with a movie that's about zombie soldiers rising from their watery graves. Now I'm not saying that this is a good film but take it for what it is, a lurid piece from french auteur Jean Rollin. The crux of this tenuous film is so bad that it is good. How many zombie films out there document the relationship between a daughter and her dead father who has risen from the depths of his watery grave. Lets thank Mr.Rollin for being innovative. Yes, the timeline for this film ia incongruous but what is congruous about a film like this anyway. This is a far cry from rollin's Fascination or Requiem for a vampire but take it for what it's worth and that is 80 minutes of vacuous fun.

Columbo: Any Old Port in a Storm (1973)
Season 3, Episode 2
Classic
31 January 2001
This is my favourite Columbo of all time. Not only is it my favourite Columbo but it also stars one of my favourite actors in Donald Pleasence. Pleasence and Falk form a great chemistry the way they start to trifle around about making wine. At this point the viewer is treated to some of Columbo's best idiosyncratic traits that has made his character so famous. I was hoping that Pleasence and Falk would team up again for a second Columbo but my hopes came to an end when Mr.Pleasence passed away in 1995.

This is one of those films that is watchable but also forgettable. I have to admit that I was entertained at times but also extremely bored as well. The problem here is that this film is so predictable and it follows the usual US style formula with nice looking characters to look at. **1/2 out of 5

Anatomy (2000)
Vapid film
24 January 2001
I had great expectations for this film but I was let down. Now let me say that this is much better than any of the vacuous mainstream horror the US has released in the last year or so but it is not on par with other great european films of the past. The potential was present but just not implemented. Parts of the film were so insipid that I found myself FForwarding sections of the movie. Try Alessandro Ammenebar's Thesis instead.
