Ordinary Angels. Photo Credit: Allen Fraser Ordinary Angels is the latest film to feature Hilary Swank playing a real-life character, and it’s directed by Jon Gunn, who’s made a name for himself both writing and directing films that tell real-life stories. He’s written American Underdog, the film about former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner; I Still Believe, a film based on the life of Christian singer Jeremy Camp; and Jesus Revolution, based on a true story, while the last movie he directed, The Case for Christ, was also based on a true story. According to Swank, Gunn was the perfect choice for a movie like Ordinary Angels, and she really appreciated his approach to filmmaking. Kelly Fremon Craig is among my favorite filmmakers when it comes to coming-of-age stories. Both The Edge of Seventeen and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. have marked the genre in such a way that any work coming from her immediately captures my attention. Although only contributing to the screenplay co-written with Meg Tilly – better known as an actress in Agnes of God or Psycho II – it’s enough to give Ordinary Angels two hours of my time.
Directed by Jon Gunn (The Case for Christ) – no, the filmmaker shares no affinity with James Gunn – and starring Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) and Alan Ritchson (Reacher), the film is inspired by a true story from 1994 in Louisville, Kentucky, where Michelle Schmitt, a sick child whose only chance of survival was a liver transplant, becomes dependent on the miraculous help of her community to overcome...

Driven by their devout Christianity, the Erwin brothers — Andrew and Jon — have never been shy about the agenda behind their work. “Our mission,” it says on their website, “is simply to spread the Gospel further than it’s ever been using film as the medium,” and that mission has seen their Kingdom Story Company evolve into one of the biggest forces in America’s burgeoning “faith-based” sub-genre.
In light of the brothers’ stated purpose, however, it’s strange that they’ve responded to their success by making increasingly secular movies. Perhaps that’s just part of the Erwins’ plan to widen the tent and share Jesus’ light with people who haven’t necessarily sought it out for themselves, but it’s hard to overstate the difference between their self-directed 2012 debut — the virulently anti-abortion drama “October Baby” — and the latest feature they’ve produced, a hokey but harmless Hilary Swank vehicle...

The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. While film fans still talk about these topics today, the movie's brutal final shootout feels mild compared to modern blood-soaked movie scenes.
Still, "Bonnie and Clyde" is a fantastic film, thanks in large part to its great cast. Warren Beatty plays cocky Clyde Barrow to Faye Dunaway's initially innocent Bonnie Parker, while actors Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons round out the Barrow gang. A young Gene Wilder made his big screen debut as one of Clyde's hostages, while Denver...

Hillary Swank rallies her entire town to help out a neighbor in the latest trailer for Lionsgate’s true-life faith-based drama “Ordinary Angels.”
The two-time Oscar winner plays a hairdresser who inserts herself into the life of a grieving widower with a critically ill daughter. The kid needs a new liver, and the dad just needs a little help. As revealed in the trailer, circumstances change when a new organ becomes available for transplant, but it requires a cross-country flight and happens to occur during a once-in-a-generation cold front.
Swank won two Best Actress Oscars, one in 2000 for “Boys Don’t Cry” and one in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby.” Although she never really became a bankable draw, she has made a career out of mostly top-billed leading roles in films like “Amelia,” “The Core” and “The Gift.” Moreover, she almost never found herself just playing the love interest or the lone woman in a macho melodrama,...

Faye Dunaway, the Oscar winner known for films such as “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Chinatown” and “Network,” has joined the cast of what will be Kevin Spacey’s first film since being accused of sexual assault, “The Man Who Drew God.”
The film’s producer Louis Nero told TheWrap that Dunaway (not pictured above) has joined the cast, which also includes Diego Casale, Stefania Rocca, Robert Davi and Franco Nero, who both stars in and directs “The Man Who Drew God.”
The film, also known under its Italian title, “L’uomo che disegnò Dio,” is the story of a blind artist who can draw portraits just by listening to human voices. According to Nero, Dunaway plays Tasha, an elderly woman with “a pained face but a vivid light in her eyes.” She was formerly the main character’s Braille teacher and becomes something of a mother figure in his life.

Mike Vogel, coming off his starring role on the NBC military drama The Brave, has been tapped to lead the cast of another broadcast drama project, the ABC pilot Triangle, from Jon Harmon Feldman and Jennifer Gwartz’s Random Hill and ABC Studios.
Written by Feldman and Sonny Postiglione, Triangle poses the question, what if the Bermuda Triangle was not a watery grave in the middle of the ocean but a land lost in time that has trapped travelers over the course of human history? Through the end of July, Warner Bros. was approximately 30% behind where they were in 2017, a year in which the studio topped $2 billion domestically for only the second time in its history. Thanks to the August releases of The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians, that difference was cut down to -21% by the end of August, and, as of September 3, the studio topped $1 billion in domestic earnings and is pacing just -19% behind 2017. We mention this only because Warner Bros. is about to deliver yet another box office hit this weekend in the form of The Nun, the latest film in the ever-expanding Conjuring Universe and this one is looking to deliver a franchise record opening. Debuting in 3,876 locations, The Nun is outpacing all previous films in the Conjuring Universe by a healthy margin when looking at IMDb page view data leading up to release. So much so that our $45 million weekend forecast almost feels conservative.

The Thai cave rescue will be the subject of not one, but two competing movies.
“Now You See Me 2” director Jon M. Chu and Ivanhoe Pictures are teaming up on a movie about the rescue operation a day after Pure Flix Entertainment announced it was seeking the movie rights to the mission.
Chu last partnered with Ivanhoe in directing the upcoming romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians.” Ivanhoe, an Sk Global company, is currently in talks with the most senior officials in Thailand, both on provincial and national levels, about the rescue project. The company is also currently in talks with multiple studios that have shown interest in this project.
Chu signaled that he was working on the project on Wednesday with a tweet, which appeared to slam Pure Flix’s efforts. “I refuse to let Hollywood #whitewashout the Thai Cave rescue story! No way. Not on our watch,” he wrote.

After numerous films attempting to persuade its religious audiences that God indeed exists (God's Not Dead, The Case for Christ, etc.), Pure Flix Entertainment has decided to go directly to the source. Mining the territory that fueled so many cheesy Hollywood epics, Samson represents the umpteenth retelling of the particular biblical tale that has the box-office advantage of featuring plenty of sex and violence. Unfortunately, this effort that all too clearly reveals its low budget is unlikely to erase anyone's memories of Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah or any other versions of the story. Fall is upon us, and with it a fresh new crop of Netflix movies to curl up with when the weather starts to turn. Next month’s most exciting addition to the streaming service is “Mudbound,” the Southern World Ward II epic from up-and-comer-turned-force-to-be-reckoned-with Dee Rees. Netflix sealed the biggest deal of this year’s Sundance Film Festival when it paid a whopping $12.5 million for “Mudbound,” setting a high bar for the drama. Balancing out the heavier fare are classic comedies like “Men In Black” and “Scary Movie,” as well as “Field of Dreams” and “42” for the baseball lovers.
The fresh crop also includes a bevy of critically acclaimed documentaries, such as “Eventual Salvation,” “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary,” and “Cuba and the Cameraman.” Jim Carrey’s creative process gets a deep dive in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which includes never-before-seen behind the scenes footage from Milos Forman...

Give credit where it’s due: “The Fate of the Furious” had the best overseas opening for any film, ever — just above “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and far above “Jurassic World.” Since its overseas opening last Wednesday, it’s earned around $430 million. That’s great for Universal, and any weekend with a $100 million opening is a good thing. But beneath the headlines are some curious results that aren’t 100 percent positive.
The Top Ten
1. The Fate of the Furious (Universal) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 56; Est. budget: $250 million
$100,182,000 in 4,310 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $23,244; Cumulative: $100,182,000
2. The Boss Baby (20th Century Fox) Week 3 – Last weekend #1
$15,540,000 (-41%) in 3,743 theaters (-86); PTA: $4,152; Cumulative: $116,324,000
3. Beauty and the Beast (Disney) Week 5 – Last weekend #2
$13,634,000 (-42%) in 3,592 theaters (-377); PTA: $4,152; Cumulative: $454,650,000

Christian movies: Starring Nicolas Cage, the widely panned 2014 apocalyptic thriller 'Left Behind' was a box office bomb – unlike (relatively) recent popular 'faith movies' such as 'Heaven Is for Real,' 'Son of God' and 'War Room.' A thought on the New Christian American Cinema: Tired of the blatant propaganda found in 'mainstream' Christian movies Two films that might be called “Christian movies” opened last week, and I decided that I wouldn't watch them, write about them, or review them – at least directly. I'm not even going to mention their titles here because I don't promote propaganda films, and that's what this recent advent of Christian movies has become: propaganda. After all, since nearly all American cinema is Christian cinema, the New Christian American Cinema is in fact pure propaganda – not cinema. Worse yet, it bores me. So, here's the thing about what we've come to call...

Once again a new installment in the Fast and Furious franchise takes flight in April and while The Fate of the Furious isn't expected to match the nearly $150 million opening of 2015's Furious 7, it is expected to become the second $100+ million opener of 2017 as all other studios have scattered, making it the only new wide release of the week. That said, Open Road will debut their animated feature Spark: A Space Tail in just over 350 theaters while Fox already began the nationwide expansion of their drama Gifted into over 1,000 theaters on Wednesday. Prior to Furious 7, the largest opening for a Fast and Furious film was the $97.3 million opening for Fast & Furious 6 back in May 2013. Industry expectations for this eighth installment have Fate of the Furious debuting with $100 million in 4,311 theaters. This is the widest April opening of all-time (307 more than Furious 7) and 13th widest release of all-time.

Chicago – HollywoodChicago.com publisher Adam Fendelman interviews Erika Christensen at the star-studded red-carpet premiere of the new film “The Case for Christ” at Chicago’s AMC River East on April 6, 2017. To begin the interview, Adam reminisces back to Erika’s stalker stardom in “Swimfan” and gets pleasantly videobombed by “The Wire” star Frankie Faison.
Based on a true story, Chicago Tribune investigative journalist and self-proclaimed atheist Lee Strobel (played by Mike Vogel) sets out to disprove the existence of God after his wife, Leslie Strobel (played by Erika Christensen), becomes a Christian.
The film, which opened on April 7, 2017, is based on Lee Strobel’s award-winning, best-selling book of the same name. “The Case for Christ” also stars Faye Dunaway, Robert Forster and Frankie Faison. Watch our interview below!

Despite competition from Sony’s animated “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” in this weekend’s continued box-office battle of the PGs, DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby” (20th Century Fox) again beat out live-action “Beauty and the Beast” (Disney). During the week “Beauty” actually outgrossed “Baby” by about $1 million, which means it’s playing beyond the kiddie crowd.
Though hardly stellar, Warners’ “Going in Style” remake with senior Oscar-winners Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine exceeded low expectations and could sustain a smaller than usual second weekend drop.
The third opener, Christian title “The Case for Christ” (Pure Flix), while based on a pre-sold bestseller and marketed in churches ahead of Holy Week, earned less than $4 million. Religious audiences, sparked by group sales, often come out on Friday night, but the 15 per cent Saturday drop suggests poor word of mouth. But it could get a boost over the Easter holiday weekend.

Fox and DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby topped the weekend box office for a second week in a row, once again leading Disney's Beauty and the Beast over the course of what felt like a placeholder weekend as far as new releases are concerned. While Sony's Smurfs: The Lost Village performed mostly as expected and New Line's Going in Style over performed based on expectations, it seems most moviegoers are merely waiting for the next weekend's release of The Fate of the Furious as it looks to become the second 2017 release to debut over $100 million. Otherwise, this weekend also featured a satisfactory opening for Pure Flix's The Case for Christ, which could see its estimates receive a bump today as a result of it being Palm Sunday, while last weekend's release of Ghost in the Shell dipped over 60% in its second weekend in release. At the top of the...

Movie Review: From the believers behind God’s Not Dead comes a slightly less preachy Case For Christ
“You’re cheating on me—with Jesus!” exclaims Lee Strobel (Mike Vogel) when wife Leslie (Erika Christensen) shares her newfound faith with him. The Case For Christ adapts Strobel’s book of the same name for Pure Flix’s first real leap into period production (their Columbine film, I’m Not Ashamed, didn’t exactly sweat the set dressing). It’s the early ’80s, and hard-boiled Chicago Tribune reporter Strobel is a firm atheist. His daughter, Alison (Haley Rosenwasser), is saved from choking to death on a gumball by provident stranger/devout nurse Alfie (L. Scott Caldwell), who credits her not going to another restaurant that night to a feeling God gave her that she’d need to be on site. Lee isn’t convinced, but Leslie’s intrigued, and—a few church services later—she’s a full-on Christian convert. That’s too much for Lee, who sets out...

An investigative journalist takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of one of history’s biggest mysteries in The Case for Christ. Based on Lee Strobel’s best-selling book, this religious-themed drama earns points for proselytizing in more narratively compelling form than usual. But while the film is watchable and features some effective performances, suffice it to say that it isn’t exactly All the President’s Men.
Set in 1980, the story revolves around Lee (Mike Vogel), an award-winning reporter for the Chicago Tribune and an avowed atheist, along with his wife Leslie (Erika Christensen). His life suddenly changes when his...

Three New Movies May Have Trouble Making Much of a Mark
After a couple impressive March weekends with one new box office record, and a couple impressive openings, we’re now into April, and of the new movies, there just doesn’t seem like anything can defeat last week’s powerful duo of DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby--which exceeded all predictions with $49 million, taking the top spot from Beauty and the Beast. Ghost in the Shell didn’t even do as well as I thought it may, opening with just $19 million, those late reviews helping to kill its weekend.

We've already seen some strong performances at the box office this year all of which have contributed to the yearly domestic box office topping $3 billion in ticket sales faster than it ever has before. Last weekend, The Boss Baby became the fifth release of 2017 to top $50 million at the weekend box office and while this weekend won't see similar returns for the week's new wide releases, it's the relative calm before the storm as Universal's The Fate of the Furious debuts next weekend, sure to become the year's second $100+ million opener. As for this weekend, the top twelve may struggle to reach $120 million collectively as both Smurfs: The Lost Village and Going in Style are looking at relatively soft openings while Pure Flix's The Case for Christ should find a spot in the lower half of the weekend top ten. At the top of the box office it's looking like...

“The Boss Baby” (20th Century Fox) and “Beauty and the Beast” (Disney) should take the top slots this early spring weekend, but the DreamWorks Animation comedy isn’t guaranteed to hold on to number one.
We’re in the middle of staggered school spring vacation season, so family-oriented films abound. That explains Sony’s release of “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” which looks to do best among the three new wide releases. However, “Going in Style” (Warner Bros.) and “The Case for Christ” (PureFlix) are less predictable with their respective older and faith-based core audiences.

It's close, but Fox and DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby narrowly beat Disney's Beauty and the Beast and delivered a #1 finish this weekend as it vastly over performed pre-release industry expectations. Meanwhile, Paramount's Ghost in the Shell debuted with the opposite result, finishing in third position and well below expectations. Elsewhere, Lionsgate's Power Rangers dropped over 60% in its second weekend while WB's Kong: Skull Island, Fox's Logan and Universal's Get Out delivered the best holds within the top ten. Finishing atop the weekend box office, Fox and Dwa's The Boss Baby brought in an estimated $49 million from 3,773 theaters. It currently stands as the tenth largest opening for a DreamWorks Animated title, but could find itself leap-frogging How to Train Your Dragon 2 should actuals come in just a bit higher. The result is also just a few million shy of the $52.1 million Home opened with over the same weekend...
