Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

Larry Birkhead, the ex-partner of the late Anna Nicole Smith, has spoken out against the new Netflix documentary about the late model and actress, which started streaming Tuesday, May 16. Speaking to Et Online, Birkhead said he refused to participate in the documentary for several reasons, the main one being to protect the couple’s daughter Dannielynn from being part of a “poorly reviewed cesspool of a project about her mother.” “We declined to participate as I did not want my daughter in an overwhelmingly poorly reviewed cesspool of a project about her Mother, where some people were allowed to invent things and rewrite history,” the photographer said. He added, “I am looking forward to a true definitive Anna Nicole project where her truth can be heard from her own perspective and by those that truly knew her the best and not just another ‘wash, rinse and repeat’ Anna Nicole project.

About forty-five minutes into Netflix’s Anna Nicole Smith documentary, I had the urge to throw my laptop away and break some things in rage. Normally, I do not let things on screen get to me, no matter how emotionally draining they are, especially when I am watching them for work. Sometimes, though, things have a way of getting out of hand. Anna Nicole Smith found her way back to her biological father when she was twenty-four. She was over the moon. The father tried to have sex with her.
Documentary filmmaking is a risky business. The director has to bear the responsibility of doing justice to the real events. But it also has to be engaging enough for the audience to hold on to their seats till the very end. You might disagree, but I don’t think it would be wrong of me to say that over the past decade,...

Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me is a documentary directed by Ursula Macfarlane about the life of Anna Nicole Smith and her years in stardom until her tragic death.
Anna Nicole Smith was a Texan girl who became an icon of American culture in the 1980s. In the wake of Marilyn, her story is also that of a woman with overwhelming sexuality criticized by traditional America and exploited by the media. . This documentary takes us back to his origins and tells us about the path she undertook to become a brilliant star with a profoundly popular style that was able to dazzle the masses.
It was precisely her ability to connect with people and her image as a stunning blonde that points her out as an heir to the iconic style that, not only, but no one knew how to promote better than Marilyn.

There’s a genre I like so much I can never get enough of it — I call it the Biopic About Someone You Wouldn’t Make a Biopic About. The form came into existence, in a certain way, with “Sid and Nancy,” but it was all but patented by the screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who planted it on the map, in 1994, with “Ed Wood” (still the “Citizen Kane” of the genre), then went on to script “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Man on the Moon” (about Andy Kaufman), “Big Eyes”, and “Dolemite Is My Name” (about the fluky hustler-comedian Ray Moore). There have been films in the genre from other quarters, like Paul Schrader’s superb “Auto Focus” (about the TV star Bob Crane and his video-fetish sex life), going right up through the recent Toronto Film Festival sensation “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
But there’s one...

Horror director Lucky McKee unfortunately remains one of those unknown, peripheral genre names, mostly thanks to a number of compromised or abandoned projects following his formidable 2002 debut, May. Over the past several years, he’s made headlines for 2011’s The Woman (another underrated gem from his filmography), and most recently the co-directed effort All Cheerleaders Die in 2013, an expansion of his 2001 short film, which is more or less the comically inclined romp you’d assume it to be. Prizing complex female characterizations, usually featuring muse Angela Bettis, McKee’s twisted visions, though few and far between, are enjoyable and entertaining, usually enhanced by a bit of subtext. About a decade ago, McKee’s sophomore feature, The Woods, would finally land on DVD in the Us following a limited festival circuit run, treated to a torturous release platform despite featuring several notable cast members. A period piece set amongst an all-girls...

As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the 24 and Private Practice alum has been booked for a three-episode arc on the ABC series, though no details on her character or the timing of her debut were shared by the trade.
Yet Bruckner seems to perfectly fit a casting call that recently went out for the role of “Autumn,” a charismatic and fiercely independent woman who “easily wraps others into her schemes.

(Cbr) If the prevailing Hollywood wisdom to recruit a promising upstart for a tentpole blockbuster was in place just a few years earlier, the director of "American Psycho" would be helming a Justice League movie right now. But Mary Harron, like so many other incredibly talented female filmmakers, has endured significantly more obstacles than her male counterparts in maintaining a healthy, varied career. And even if "The Notorious Bettie Page" and her new film, "Anna Nicole", weren’t far more sophisticated than quite frankly they even needed to be, she’d still be ready to tackle superhero-sized material. Obsession, friendship and loyalty are a dangerous mix, and the brew has provided a backdrop to countless thrillers because the concoction is always potent. This summer, an upcoming indie thriller mixes those ingredients up to deliver "Breaking The Girls" and as it gets ready to make its debut, we have the exclusive poster for the film. Directed by Jamie Babbit ("But I'm A Cheerleader," "The Quiet"), starring Madeline Zima (“Californication," “Heroes”), Agnes Bruckner ("Anna Nicole," "The Woods") and inspired by Patricia Highsmith's "Strangers On A Train," the sexually charged story follows two young women -- Sara and Alex -- who form a pact to murder each other's bitter enemy. Sara will kill Alex's stepmother, while Alex will dispose of Brooke, a woman who humiliated Sara and cost her a scholarship at the school she attends. 27 years ago today, Lindsay Morgan Lohan — née Lindsay Dee Lohan — was born in New York City.
It would be easy enough to mark the occasion by snarking about the state of her career — or with a much darker headline. Somehow, though, doing that wouldn’t feel right. Showtime's summer premieres of the final season of "Dexter" and debut season of "Ray Donovan" got off to a record start, while Lifetime's "Anna Nicole" delivered the highest demo ratings of an original cable movie so far this year.
Season 8 of "Dexter" kicked off Sunday (June 30) with 2.5 million viewers, a bump from the 2.4 million viewers for the Season 7 premiere. That means every single season of "Dexter" officially bowed to bigger numbers than the previous season, and the series looks certain to finish out as one of Showtime's all-time biggest success stories.
Related: "Dexter" Season 8 premiere recap
The big "Dexter" return surely helped lead-out "Ray Donovan," which premiered to 1.35 million -- the biggest series premiere audience in Showtime history. "Donovan" easily topped previous champ "Homeland," which drew 1.08 million back in 2011.
However, the Emmy winning "Homeland" continued to grow with time and word of mouth, and drew 1.73 million for its Season 2 premiere.

"The Anna Nicole Story" aired on Lifetime last night, and critics and tweeters alike quickly took to the Internet to offer up their (very strong) opinions.
The biopic chronicles the life of Anna Nicole Smith (played by Agnes Bruckner), a woman formerly known as Vicky Lynn Hogan, as she transitioned into the spotlight and eventually into a sad mess of alcohol and drug abuse. So how did it go over?
"Anna Nicole is a cheap, trashy, melodramatic Lifetime original movie that's at times so absurd you can't help but laugh -- which perfectly evinces the campy essence of Anna Nicole Smith," Jezebel's Tracie Egan Morrissey wrote.

What does it take transform a dedicated actress like Agnes Bruckner into a larger-than-life sex symbol like Anna Nicole Smith?
"A lot of glue," Bruckner says with a laugh.
Lifetime's "Anna Nicole" premieres this weekend, and Zap2it spoke with Bruckner (whose previous TV work includes guest arcs on "Private Practice," "Covert Affairs" and "24") about the physical transformation involved in playing the title role.
Since Smith's short life was so widely documented, Bruckner says it all starts with looking at what Smith left behind for inspiration. "Luckily there were so many images of Anna all throughout her life online and in magazines and everything," she explains. "We tried to choose some of the more well known images and recreate [her looks] the best we could."

Mary Harron Offers a Warped Take on the Typical Hollywood Tragedy Format in Lifetime's 'Anna Nicole'
Anna Nicole Smith went from a Texas teen mom to a stripper to the much younger wife of an octogenarian billionaire to a model/reality star to dead due to a lethal combination of prescription pills, all before the age of 40. It's the kind of life that makes her an ideal subject for a Lifetime movie, that soapy subgenre of made for television features in which tragedies and traumas, real and fictionalized, are enacted with low production values and highly histrionic acting. Lifetime does have a classier mode of operation when it comes to its original features -- see last year's all-African American remake of "Steel Magnolias," or May's Allison Anders-directed June Carter Cash biopic "Ring of Fire" -- but "Anna Nicole," which airs Saturday, June 29 at 8pm, is not of that more serious, sometimes to its own detriment, ilk. No, it's gleefully lurid from its opening montage, which...

New York, Jun 17(Ani): Actress Agnes Bruckner has gone from a B-cup to a Dd, without any surgery involved for Anna Nicole Smith role makeover.
In the Lifetime biopic 'Anna Nicole,' Bruckner will be donning false boobs, designed by three-time Academy Award winner Greg Cannom and painstakingly applied by experienced makeup artists Todd McIntosh and David De Leon, the New York Post reported.
McIntosh told the publication that he and David would apply the breasts in tandem, which created the freedom for them to move and jiggle more like flesh.
He further explained that it would have been impossible for Bruckner to do.

No one's ever accused Lifetime movies of being subtle ("Liz & Dick," anyone?), but the upcoming "Anna Nicole Story" looks as though it might take the crown when it comes to unsubtle insanity -- if the first sneak peek is any indication. Let's take a look at the five wildest moments in the brief glimpse of the film.
5. Adam Goldberg's uncannily similar appearance to Howard K. Stern
The minute-long teaser is scant on glimpses of the supporting cast (which includes Martin Landau, Virginia Madsen and Cary Elwes), but the quick shot of Adam Goldberg ("The Unusuals") as Smith's lawyer/husband/enabler Howard K. Stern is chilling. Don't blink, or you'll miss it.
4. The dour cover of "Fame"
As if the audience didn't recognize already that the quest for, and maintaining of, fame played a major role in Smith's tragic demise, the trailer is set to a sad, downbeat cover of Irene Cara's "Fame.

Because it's too early to get the rights for The Amanda Bynes Story (directed by Diablo Cody), Lifetime had to settle for the long-forgotten Anna Nicole Smith, the latest celebrity blonde tragedy whose kryptonite was the secret killer of all hopes and dreams: pills and alcohol. Anna Nicole stars Agnes Bruckner (Private Practice, 24) as the titular bombshell (whose government name was Vickie Lee Hogan) as she chronicles the Playboy model's untimely 2007 death at the age of 39, due to a drug overdose. The trailer gives morose shadings to the classic Fame track "I'm Gonna Live Forever" while Smith's ride to superstardom comes at the expense of a scarred relationship with her young son. Watch the full 60-second clip below:
The Anna Nicole Story looks none too classy, but you'll be able to judge when it premieres Sunday, June 29th at 8pm on Lifetime. Thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.

So, should we give up on Mary Harron ever matching the accomplishment of her first two features, "I Shot Andy Warhol" and "American Psycho"? Because since then, it's been mostly a downward trajectory with lots of TV work, the disappointing "The Notorious Bettie Page" and the forgotten (and not very well received) vampire flick "The Moth Diaries." And now in what must be a career nadir, Harron has retreated to Lifetime to crank out one of their cheapie biopics, "The Anna Nicole Story," ripped from the headlines of six years ago. Anyway, Agnes Bruckner takes the lead role in the movie that will track the tragic life of the model with all the subtlety of a TMZ news post. The one-minute teaser features no shortage of posing and glamour shots, intercut with alcohol (gasp!), pills (double gasp!) and a sad-eyed kid looking on (sob!). Somehow, Martin Landau, Virginia Madsen and...

So, what’s left to say about Anna Nicole Smith? Not a whole lot, according to this new trailer for Lifetime’s upcoming biopic. But if you like seeing a fresh-faced, down-home Texas gal descend into stripping, drug addiction, and dressing up like a Juggalette for some reason, you may as well watch it anyway.
At least the casting’s on point. The movie stars Agnes Bruckner, whom you may remember from Private Practice or Lifetime’s own Craigslist Killer movie, as Anna Nicole (née Vickie Lynn Hogan). Against all odds, its ensemble also includes one Oscar winner (84-year-old Martin Landau...

Lifetime network movies have never promised quality — or even competent — filmmaking, and that's fine. Who cares? They're usually incredibly entertaining. (Do yourself a favor and watch "Cyber Seduction: His Secret Life" starring Jeremy Sumpter aka J.D. McCoy from "Friday Night Lights." It's about addiction to internet porn, and it's amazing.) But the latest effort from the channel for your mom has some actual talent behind it.
"The Anne Nicole Story" may look like your typical Lifetime fare, but this doomed celebrity biopic is helmed by Mary Harron, who directed Christian Bale in his career-best performance in "American Psycho."
The trailer is surprisingly effective and promises as sad of a story as you'd expect from a retelling of the model's tragic, drugged-out life.
"The Anna Nicole Story" also stars Cary Elwes, Adam Goldberg, Martin Landau and Virginia Madsen and debuts on Lifetime on June 29 and plays every Sunday afternoon until the end of eternity.

Lifetime has released its first trailer for "The Anna Nicole Story," the network's original movie about Anna Nicole Smith directed by Mary Harron, of "American Psycho" and "The Notorious Bettie Page." Agnes Bruckner ("Blue Car") stars as the voluptuous model and actress, and while she can't really replicate Smith's physicality, what makes the video below worth a watch is the way it really does seem to represent a Lifetime sensibility crossed with Harron's.
