Promising Premise, Messy and Disappointing Execution
claudio_carvalho13 April 2012
The successful American writer and atheist Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs) participates in a support group to accept the death of his beloved wife Sarah (Salomé Jiménez) and their son Diogo. Joe befriends Sadie (Wendy Glenn) in one of the meetings and she helps him when he has a car accident.

When Joe's estranged religious brother Samuel Crone (Michael Landes) tells him that their father is terminal, he travels to Barcelona to stay near the death bed of his father. Joe has visions of demons and with the number 11 and he finds that something evil will happen with Samuel and him on 11 November 2011.

"11-11-11" is a film with a promising premise, but with a messy and disappointing execution. The screenplay is boring and confused; the scary atmosphere with demons repeats several times along the film and becomes irritating; and the predicable plot point is hard to believe, disclosed in very fast pace and annoying. My vote is three.

Title (Brazil): "11-11-11"

This is NOT a doomsday film!
TheCornProject6 November 2011
You may or may not have bought into the false advertising campaign that is targeting young horror fans who think that they are going to see some apocalyptic event that occurs on the 11-11-11. If you are part of this target group, I am telling you now that you will most certainly be disappointed. This film is a slow-paced, methodical character-driven piece about the conflict between faith-based ideologies. Don't be tricked into thinking that this is going to be some exciting or thrilling popcorn adventure in the same vein as some of the other high budget apocalyptic films out there. Director Darren Lynn Bousman has himself said that he wanted to explore his own spiritual beliefs and conceptions about existence through this film.

We begin by following Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs), a popular novelist who is tormented by the death of his family through constant reoccurring nightmares and hallucinations. As seemingly random events begin to unfold in his life, Joseph struggles to cling onto any real purpose of his continuing existence. As he rapidly descends into a state of self-seclusion, he discovers a pattern in which all the events in his life are taking place. They appear to always happen at the set time of 11:11 am/pm. When his estranged pastor brother Samuel (Michael Landes) rings to tell him about his dying father, Joseph immediately travels to Barcelona. Here is where the story will perhaps turn south for most people. We spend a good 40 minutes of the film trying to decipher strange supernatural clues as we are subjected to long-winded seemingly pointless dialogue scenes. For some this may be incredibly boring, especially since the fact that apart from a few jump-scares and men in goblinesque costumes, the film is basically devoid of any horror or suspense. As the day of 11-11-11 approaches, events get weirder and weirder until the finale where a huge revealing twist is attempted but comes off looking incredibly schlocky.

Overall I'm pretty sure this film will flop badly. Due to its misleading nature, I feel that many people are going to rightfully flame this film in general. In my opinion it would have served better as a psychological drama about the descent of a rational man into madness. The twist would have been Joseph's self-realization that 11-11-11 has no meaning and it is just another number. Unfortunately the film favors a more unrealistic and perplexing ending that wasn't needed. There are however some redeemable qualities to the film such as the philosophical themes surrounding religion vs. society and also the talent of Timothy Gibbs to carry the film until the end despite many major flaws. I recommend that you watch this when it comes out on DVD so you can make up your own mind but I suggest that you consider the limitations of the budget (which couldn't have been more than $2 million).

Poorly researched concept, could have been better
AnotherReviewer6 November 2011
11:11 seems to be a real phenomenon, but this movie has no correlation to those beliefs or possibilities. In that sense, it was poorly researched. I Think the idea is good, but here it was almost thrown together and poorly thought-out. The movie seems jumpy and quite random, the characters have no depth, and scenes lack flow. With bad make-up/costume design, low budget special effects, and sometimes pointless dialogue, I was almost distracted from the story. There was enough monotone content, with a few attempts to startle the audience, to keep me until the fairly predictable end. I really wouldn't recommend this to anybody... maybe a study on "How we could have made this movie better" for film students.

Warning: Spoilers
Just saw the movie and regret the time I had spent to see it. It seems as if the movie is cut short in many ways. There is no decent character development nor pace of the storytelling. In some movies it isn't required because it's portrayed well and interesting. Thisone surely isn't. Being a horror movie freak I could point out every and any scene that could have been made more interesting, as if the movie is made by someone who didn't care what he was doing. Such a shame. There are so many decent B movies in the horror genre that had a even smaller budget, but turned out great, entertaining and enough creepy at times. This movie missed the train on all those points. Too bad for words. I hope the film industry comes with better stuff, not puppets spreading their wings and that's supposed to be scary. Don't waste your time on this one peeps. Not worth your time at all.

no offense, but this movie is garbage.
eviscerations7 November 2011
the plot is just atrocious. the ending is ridiculous. the acting is terrible. the special effects are far from special. the theme is unoriginal. about the only enjoyable aspect of this "film" - i'd not call it that, but rather a "cinematic suppository" - would be the soundtrack. save yourself. save your money. save 2 hours of your life that you will never get back if you were to suffer through this travesty.

the saddest part about this movie is the fact that it will make more money than most of us make in our entire lifetimes.

oh and just to add perhaps some weight to my statements, i graduated film school. i spent months studying screenplays and the screen writing process. i went through years of work to attain my degree. you can take my opinion, or you can see for yourself.

i hope for the former. i'd rather you be spared the suffering that is this filth.

11-11-11
American writer and atheist, Joseph Crone, receives word from his estranged brother, that his father is dying. He travels to Spain to see his father on his death bed, where he discovers that his younger brother has followed his fathers calling and become a catholic Pastor. Together they have established their own chapel on the grounds of their family home. Joseph's life has been plagued with strange happenings and tragedies, which seem to be connected to the number 11. His intrigue soon uncovers deeper mythological and religious significance to the number and possibly his family.

11-11-11 is written and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who previously brought us Saw 2 – 4 and the superb 2010 remake of Mothers Day. Bousman has made skillful use of popular synchronicity around the number 11, where numerologists and string theorists believe that events linked to the time 11:11 appear more often than can be put down to mere chance or accident and has great symbolism in the universe.

The basic idea for the movie is engaging with lots of potential, unfortunately, this is where the films merits end. The plot becomes tedious and bland fast, holding this pace for the majority of the film. The scares consist of frightening faces appearing in the shadows or windows, but they fail to show any snap or shock value, becoming repetitive and tiresome early on. The special effects, especially the costumes and make up, feel amateurish and almost laughable a times. The acting and dialogue is decidedly mediocre, the characters are difficult to like or relate to in many ways. The twist ending of the movie was better than expected, however, it does not make up for its unexciting story and production short comings. Overall a great idea, wasted.

Weak, lame, and uninspired
waste4205 November 2011
This movie was just TERRIBLE. I got an advanced copy and what a complete waste of time. This was solely a gimmick for 11/11/11. The people who wrote this were just looking for a way to make money on a movie and what they came up with was the weakest plot somehow tied to religion and a number.

But guess what, the number has nothing to do with this movie. They could have easily made this movie without all of the number references. They also could have easily made this movie better without such a loose plot, however it was extremely hard to follow or figure what was going on.

Then they finally tell you what is going on like you are a child, flashing back to scenes that you just saw and don't need to be retold. Overall, this movie didn't even give the satisfaction of even coming off as a scary movie, like it advertises.

The scares were weak and overplayed. The best part was maybe the crazy old man, but that is even stretching it for me. Just say no, I wish I did.

Big disappointment
Rozhbaiany6 November 2011
Personally, being obsessed to the whole repetitive numbers made me very excited about this movie. I was really waiting for it to be released! And that's probably why it was a big disappointment for me. The idea of the repetitive numbers was a new unexplored theme and unfortunately it got spoiled with this movie. Very weak acting with obvious predictable flow of the story, combined with cheap visual effects and make up, all built for the failure of this movie. Not to mansion the off topic ending which was a hopeless trial to give a lasting final impression. Seriously the whole religion thing in those movies is a pathetic try from their writers to utilize people's passions towards their beliefs to make free advertisement for the movies! P.S. the only reason I gave the movie 2 stars out of 10 is for it's title nothing more nothing less.

Endings you can guess are boring yes, but I'd take predictable over retarded any day.
tgump895 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Starts out slow, after 20 minuets or so it get a nice suspenseful rhythm then the stupidest ending. Writers please if you don't have the ability to right an unexpecting "twist" at the end don't try. IMO they tried to make the viewer feel "wow I would of never guest that"...You know why we would never guess that? Because its stupid, leaves a ton of holes, and is "unresolved" ... oh yeah and mostly unsatisfying.

Only reason it got a two is for leading me on in the middle to think it was going to be worth my time.

Endings you can guess are boring yes, but I'd take predictable over retarded any day. Currently I'm having flash back of Nicholas Cage in wicker man...not that bad but so close.

The end is near... If you believe...
tooneydws4 November 2011
"After the tragic death of his wife and child, famed American author Joseph Crone travels from the United States to Barcelona, Spain to reunite with his estranged brother Samuel and dying father, Richard. However, fate has a different plan for Joseph as his life becomes plagued with strange happenings and the constant sightings of the number 11. Curiosity quickly turns to obsession, and Joseph soon realizes that this number holds a horrific meaning not only to himself but possibly to all of religion. Isolated in a foreign country with only the support of his companion, Sadie, Joseph soon realizes that 11/11/11 is more than just a date, it's a WARNING!"

For all you Darren Lynn Bousman Saw fans out there do not expect anyone to get blown to bits or sliced apart or ground into human hamburger... this film is one that will have you jump out of your seat rather than puke on your popcorn. Visual trickeries, eerie sounds and music will set the tone here. The Spanish scenery is enjoyable and the cast plays very well. The undertone of the film has an Omen-like quality that comes to a head toward the end on the title date in the film.

Overall a good thriller especially if you are a church goer, bible reader or believe that the end of our existence rests in the hands of the supernatural rather than our own selfish destruction of this otherwise perfect planet.

I enjoyed this film and give it 7 of 10 for corny demon make up and a few overly obvious CGI bits. Otherwise worth the watch... maybe even a second time...

Well what can i say about most movies today coming out of studios today apart from a major lack of creativity, however onto the film, which i found after watching it and thinking there's an hour and a half of my life i'll never get back. Truly awful so called spooky demons which you will probably think the crew members have just raided the local fancy dress store. The acting was terrible and the story was too stupid to follow it just lacked everything a good movie should have. The only good part of this film was when the credits rolled sorry but this is awful at best and tragic such a shame as the trailer showed such promise. You have been warned!!

Not what I thought, and that is avoid thing
Mreditor110 November 2011
This movie has little to nothing to do with the trailer. Forget the flashy 'you are fuc$ed' trailers. The only thing 'fuc$Ed will be your expectations going in if you even watch the trailers.

The movie is slow. And I mean slow. It's more of a character study than a horror film. But in my opinion pays off in the end.

This is my first review on IMDb, and only signed up after I saw the venom being spewed. Not my favorite movie by any means. But a heck of a lot better than the half stars I have been seeing.

I think you need to go in with the mind set - no gore, no violence, no jump scares. It's not that type of film. It much more akin to something like THE OMEN.

Maybe I am just a sucker for religious films.

A decent indie thriller/horror.
rwdrex9 November 2011
A lot of negative early feedback has forced my hand in defending this film. It's not that bad and I was actually engaged in the story almost to the end.

The biggest complaint is in the acting department. The main leads weren't bad, but the supporting cast barely held on--a similar issue I had with Repo and Saw II, two of Bousman's better films.

Now the plot is fairly original, if somewhat predictable. And I know the religious themes have been done to death, but most horror films end up going down that path. This film simply puts religion front and center. But it is far from a pro-Christian film like "The Rite" or "The Exorcist". The subject matter is more akin to "Lord of Illusions" or "The Ninth Gate".

The plot: Basically, a famous author after having suffered a horrible tragedy and now in hiding is called to his father's deathbed in Spain. And there he uncovers a predestined fate for his family involving the upcoming date 11-11-11.

The low budget seems to work in this film's favor. Remember when a just a shadow or shape in the dark could scare you? The film relies mostly on the mystery and the setting to provide the horror. Only in the last act do "actual" things happen. The CGI effects are fairly bad, but thankfully conservatively used. It's nice for a change to have a horror film try and scare us without grossing us out.

The last act is quite poor, unfortunately. The big setup from the first hour leads us into a predictable and kinda overdone ending. I prefer my conclusions to be either more subtle or more surprising.

I respect what Bousman is doing with these less commercial, indie horror films. He tries out new things with low budgets and seems to get his vision across. I'd rather continue to watch films like this and Repo over the crap that other "visionaries" like Shyamalan have been doing lately with much more money.

With some better acting and a tighter ending it could've ended up a minor classic. As it stands, a nice film.

Real stinker of a movie.
magnethjulet6 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie sux!

Warning this may contain a spoiler. It starts good enough, building some tension for a mystery like expected, but later it turns into some Christian mumbo-jumbo with demons and lots of nonsensical illogical stuff happening, like the main character getting shot and not caring, running around like a headless chicken and everything just falls apart.

There are also a lot of loose ends, like why did his "girlfriend" betray him or even why did she know he would go to Spain at all? She sure acts like she knew it at the end. (witch comparison to how she acted in the beginning..)

DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE if you want to have a good time or even slightly believe in the 11-11-11 date as something significant, as this has nothing to do withe the 13 crystal skulls or the Maya.

A sadly disappointing, deeply silly film
Just_Killing_Time5 November 2011
I had hope for director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2-4), since Repo! The Genetic Opera was a flawed but interesting experiment and his Mother's Day remake was actually pretty much excellent IMHO. But alas…bad movie is bad. Bousman's directing skils aren't even the real problem here (the film is shot decently and is at times pretty atmospheric), but near everything else is... There is hardly enough story here to warrant a half hour Twilight Zone segment, let alone a feature film. For an hour, the same things happen over and over again, even going so far that 2 characters have the exact same conversation no less than 3 times. Acting is hammy at best, especially from the lead actor, who's film-noir detective like voice-over nearly takes the film into the realm of parody. The music is constanty omnious, even when nothing remotely creepy is happening. The finale is actually pretty OK and I actually liked the ending, but the makers damn near give us the resolution of the movie in a powerpoint presentation with the director shouting "See? See what we did there???" I actually had quite some fun watching this, giggling at how bad this all was. And I admit I jumped a few times. Just make sure you don't go out of your way to see this. It is a deeply silly film.

It's All About the Date, and Nothing Else
Chris_Pandolfi13 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
"11-11-11" is a horror movie about a writer plagued by ominous visions, supernatural encounters, and repeated exposure to the number eleven. This would include the date the story leads up to, and how fortuitous that the film was actually given a November 11, 2011 release date. Remember the 2006 remake of "The Omen" and its June 6 release date, which we all know was a marketing ploy to have the month, date, and year exactly match the demonic number 666? And then there was "The Number 23," which opened to the public on February 23, 2007 – and incidentally, I was twenty-three years old at that time. At least they both had clever ad campaigns, and in my opinion, they were fairly decent films. The same cannot be said for "11-11-11." To be perfectly honest, all the elevens in the world would not have made this film work.

The writer, named Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs), is a skeptic who lost his faith after his wife and child tragically died in a house fire. It was started, we eventually learn, by a fanatic who was inspired by one of his books. As the film progresses, his brushes with strange phenomena will naturally become more frequent, more dangerous, and more frightening. This would be fine, except that he stubbornly remains a skeptic until the last possible moment, which is odd because the circumstances make absolutely no sense. But I won't get into that just yet. Exactly how many run-ins with demons and double digits are necessary for you to finally consider the possibility that there truly is something bigger than yourself? At a certain point, I wanted to crawl up into the screen, smack this guy across the head, and scream, "Believe, already!"

The plot, as it were, involves Joseph travelling to Barcelona and reuniting with his estranged father (Denis Rafter), who's dying, and his handicapped brother, Samuel (Michael Landes), a minister for a dwindling congregation. As Joseph muddles his way through a series of strange events, he begins to suspect that everything is somehow connected to the number eleven. He's repeatedly told that someone has to be saved, and so he naturally deduces that his purpose in life is to protect his brother, who may be a really special person. Warnings persist about ghostly beings caught in the purgatory between life and death, that they seek a doorway into our world, and that it will happen on November 11. At least, I think that's what was going on. It seems that the more explaining this movie does, the less sense it makes.

Many horror movies have been made about the battle between faith and non-belief, but lack of originality is not what makes "11-11-11" so unbearable. It's the way in which these opposites are explored. Just about every conversation between the brothers is constructed like a joke. Samuel, pious and soft-spoken, provides the setups. Joseph, the angry atheist, delivers the punch lines. Writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman assembles passages of dialogue as if there's no such thing as middle ground; he has two men shouting at the rain, both sounding ridiculous. Listening to these men argue about God is a little like watching a political debate between candidates who have already lost the race. They continue to campaign, even though voters have long since stopped caring about what they stand for or even who they are.

The film also features a young woman named Sadie (Wendy Glenn), who met Joseph at a support group for people who have lost family members. Her appearance seems to have stemmed from the desire to have a female character present in a horror movie. This is strange because Bousman didn't have the decency to use her in typical ways, such as having her get topless, making her scream helplessly, and ultimately having her die a horrible, bloody death. I don't think I've seen another film this year in which a character so thoroughly lacked a purpose. She's completely useless. Even her encouraging words for Joseph have no effect, mostly because we expected her to say them as early as her very first scene.

All leads to a surprise ending, except it isn't a surprise so much as it is a cheat. At that point, I no longer had any idea what was going on. When I was finally hit with the plot twist, I felt angry, for its inclusion seemed intentionally designed to confuse me even further. Nothing that happens during the final ten minutes makes sense. Is Bousman trying to make a point about religion? If so, what is it? The more I try and work through his logic, the more I'm torn between hysterical laughter and blinding rage. It can't possibly be a good sign when the only thing a movie called "11-11-11" has going for it is a series of numbers tied to a release date. They couldn't even get that right; the film's limited release pretty much prevented the start of an immersive ad campaign. How many people actually know that this movie exists?

Same story different country
prettygonavy4 November 2011
OK first of all this is my first time reviewing any movie on IMDb since this was so terrible I felt compelled to let people know how awful this was. I usually turn to IMDb for all movies Netflix, RedBox, or theatrical release and the reviews are usually pretty spot on. Anyways don't waste your time seeing this movie it has been done over and over to death. The visual effects were very poor being that Halloween just passed I saw scarier costumes on kids. Hollywood just please let these type of movies die already especially if your not going to put any creativity into the script. The acting is horrible it felt like a direct to video release (at least should be) all in all is a very predictable movie not scary whatsoever. If you don't mind wasting your time and money go see this, however if you are smart and must see this movie wait till it's on Netflix I promise you will thank me later.

Warning: Spoilers
I have times that I gave up watching some bad movies in the beginning or after its first half, but I certainly cannot believe that I watched that movie from beginning to the end!

One of the writers of SAW II,III,IV, Darren Lynn Bousman, apparently is not able to do the writing thing alone. He probably thought he can, but what a waste of money and time! The story was poorly written, the characters in the story were shallow and not even remotely original. I am actually curious about the director's cut addition, if there is any, to understand whether the producers or the director/writer is responsible for the failure.

I honestly not recommend.

-spoiler-

They did not spent money for make-up artists obviously or they did not choose the right ones.

The old-fashioned horror movie clichés were really irritating and boring.

In one scene, an attacker tried to shoot the priest, and his brother said that they should call 9-1-1 but they were in SPAIN (and It was not a panic talk).

The end was also boring, because the director made it quite similar to SAW series which made my eyes tired (another scene in every second).

Blehhhh...
pilkkari7 November 2011
Well what to say, this movie was a)dark (as shot in the), b)predictable and c)boring. The movie starts off with the whole 11/11/11 shebang and as soon as it's being explained somehow I started to roll my eyes. The movie was boring until the end and even in the "magical" 11-11-11 mark it just stumbled horrifically. The main protagonist is just unlikeable as well as the rest of his family. And as soon as the other characters start popping up you pretty much guess their motives and reasons for being in the movie. The plot in itself is idiotic and just thrown in the wind. The plot mixes religion with premonitions and literal bible junk and just doesn't come together in any point to deliver any sort of "ah-hah" feeling or a sense even wanting to know what the whole thing is about. All the spooky stuff happens in complete darkness so you see a glimmer of something shiny in the darkness, but the music direction is a bit off so you'll hear the loud "TADAA" music before anything interesting happens. And sometimes it took the music ques to inform me that something was actually happening seeing that all you see in the night scenes is black. All and all I'd say that the movie had no redeeming qualities and just skated by on the entire numbers theme. Bad acting, bad script, bad direction and no suspense all together in one unhappy bundle. But seeing as I've seen worse I'll give a 3 for all of the 11's. Shame on you Bousman, I really expected more.

The movie should be renamed to '00-00-00' because it is so terrible that i started to question my sanity for watching the movie.

The plot is terrible, the acting below par, visual effects pathetic and the whole sequence of events is childish. I fell in trap of watching this movie because of the hype created by the date it tends to represent and i wrote this review just because i could be helpful to someone who is planning to watch this movie.

If you need an advice, don't watch this one even when you have no other choice. I wish I could rate this movie any less than 1 because of the utter nonsense this movie is full of.

another hyped flick that failed
trashgang23 November 2011
Can you release a better title then 11-11-11? It only happens once in your life. The hype was going on especially due the director, Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed Saw 2,3 and 4 but it's always fault to put such a thing as a promotion on your DVD or Blu Ray.

The story is very simple, on the 11-11-11 things will go wrong with the world, the devil will unleash his demons on humanity. This is surely not another Saw, this is way back in time back to the seventies and eighties were some flicks were made about possession, or demons attacking the world. There is no blood to reckon in it and there's a lot of talking going on, still, I kept watching because I wanted to know what was going on. It slowly reveals itself and some will see the end coming of this flick from miles away.

The acting was rather good and you believed in Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs) one we have seen before in The Kindred and Witchboard 2. He really had to carry this flick but succeeded.

But it's just a horror who needs the scary parts and there aren't that many in 11-11-11. The demons do appear on a regular base but nothing really happens until the end. If you like supernatural or flicks about possession or demons then this is for you but at the end, 11-11-11 pasted and nothing happened at all, just like in this flick.

Really a great movie!!!
hellofthelivingdead10 November 2011
I've finally seen 11-11-11 : really a great movie!!! Chilling atmosphere, terrifying (and original) story, terrific images and photography (by Joseph White), unexpected and nihilistic ending! Bousman changes his directing style (quite different from his previous works), the main theme, the genre, but he proves once more that he is a talented director and story teller! The cast is credible and they did a good work, especially Timothy Gibbs (the main protagonist). Very good the visual effects, a little bit less the make-up of the 'monsters'.

A must see!

His brother Samuel (Michael Landes) is confined to a wheel chair. Joseph has lost his faith, something that is reflected in his character. In Spain there are weird things going on. The house has cameras installed. The elderly housekeeper thinks it is demons. Joseph has noticed the coincidence of the number 11:11 appearing in his life and tragedy striking...and we are now headed toward 11/11/11!!!!

Gibbs and Landes subject us to a constant barrage of boring monotone dialogue early in the film. Later Joseph, the skeptic, becomes excited. The special effects are low budget, but worked. I enjoyed the twist at the end. It set up for a sequel. I am dying to compare this to other films, but making any comparison would spoil it for the viewer.

Infrequent F-bomb, no sex or nudity.

Hilarious!

This is an awful movie, no doubt about that. But please, don't let that dissuade you from watching it (though I would wait for the DVD). Why? Because it's hilarious! I can't remember the last time I heard movie dialogue so contrived, and it's ridiculously funny. The focus is always on the main character's lack of faith. So naturally he has a strained relationship with his brother and father, who are pastors. But there's no need to make this apparent through actions, the story etc. No, might as well point it out explicitly and constantly! The main character is simply unable to talk about anything except how he hates religion/god. Likewise, most other characters talk of nothing but their faith. Apparently these are all very simple people. 2 stars because of the hilarity. The horror gets 0.
