The ballots are out and the betting is competitive but Ben Affleck – and Alan Arkin – have the biggest award of all sewn up
I have a friend, a Hollywood producer, who calls me up every week or so and leaves the following message in a conspiratorial, Deep-Throatish voice: "I am now in a position to tell you the winner of this year's best-picture Oscar."
It's a joke. Each week I call back and he tells me a different film. Except that unlike that last film we decided on as this year's best picture – what were we thinking? – this new one is absolutely, positively going to win. No doubt. Sweep the board. A winner through and through. At least until next week.
Frankly, it's the only way to deal with an Oscar race that seems to consist, at times, entirely of frontrunners. It's the most competitive race in years – a "barn-burner...

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is setting box office records but it's not because of the ground-breaking high frame rate (Hfr), stereoscopic production techniques employed by director Peter Jackson.
The filmmaker's preference was always to show the film in 3D at 48 frames per second (double the current standard) to create a more immersive and realistic.cinematic experience. However, early Hfr footage divided audiences, who have spent decades associating the cinematic experience with the vagaries of 24fps projection.
While the distributor (Warner Bros via Roadshow Films in Australia) was long planning a widespread release of the Hfr version, it ultimately took a more cautious approach.
.In hindsight, it was probably the right decision not to go with a wide release because I think they would have had a significant number of technical issues on their hands,. Hoyts Cinema Technology Group chief technology officer Adam Wrightson said.

Earlier this year, TV Land decided to give Happily Divorced an extra-big second season. Now, they've done the same thing for The Exes.
The Exes revolves around three divorced men who live together and their lawyer/landlady. The cast includes Donald Faison, Wayne Knight, David Alan Basche, Kelly Stables, and Kristen Johnston.
In February, the cable channel ordered a second season of 12 episodes of The Exes and aired them between June and September. Now, according to Deadline, TV Land has ordered 10 more episodes and is considering them part of season two.
It's unclear why they're not calling the 10 new installments season three but fans of the show should be pleased they're getting more installments. The Exes is one of TV Land's lower-rated sitcoms with season two averaging 910,000 viewers with a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

Some more casting news has come in for A&E's new series "Bates Motel," and let me go on record as saying if teachers looked like this when I was going to school, I would have had perfect attendance.
Deadline reports that Keegan Connor Tracy (the Blue Fairy on "Once Upon A Time") is set to recur on A&E’s upcoming series "Bates Motel," which serves as a prequel to Psycho. Tracy will play Miss Watson, Norman’s teacher and adviser.
The series examines the twisted relationship between serial-killer-to-be Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga).

Bennett Miller, the Oscar-nominated director behind Moneyball, is firming up the cast for his next feature, Foxcatcher, which is set to be a fascinating film for all involved.
Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo have all come on board since last autumn, and now Deadline report that Sienna Miller has been cast in the drama, based on a tragic true story.
Carell stars as paranoid schizophrenic, John duPont, a multimillionaire and member of the notable du Pont family, who shot and killed his long-time friend and Olympic champion wrestler, Dave Schultz (Ruffalo).
Tatum is set to star as Schultz’s brother, Mark, with Sienna Miller now joining the cast as Ruffalo’s wife, Nancy.
Miller is directing from a script co-written by past collaborator Dan Futterman (Capote) and E. Max Frye (Band of Brothers), and the director will be producing alongside the increasingly, exponentially influential Megan Ellison (Lawless, The Master...

Director Bennett Miller‘s passion project follow-up to his smash hit Moneyball continues to take shape with the protracted roll-out of his final casting decisions. Deadline Hollywood reports that Sienna Miller is now set to play Nancy Schultz in Foxcatcher, based on the wrenching and bizarre story of the murder of Olympic wrestler (and Nancy’s husband) Dave Schultz. Mark Ruffalo has been attached to the Schultz role since April, along with the rest of an impressive cast that also includes Steve Carell and Channing Tatum. Miller has been trying to get the film made for years, so it’s heartening that he’s finally been able to compile such a talented line-up to tell the tale of the tragically murdered Schultz. And what a tale it is. The film tells the true story of John du Pont (Carell), the heir to the du Pont fortune who, as a huge supporter of amateur sports and USA Wrestling...
