Set in the fictional East Coast suburb Pine Valley, All My Children is the decades-old, risk-taking soap that centers around Erica Kane and her long line of husbands.
"All My Children" was my very first soap and the one that's nearest and dearest to my heart. Even though the show is not as great as it once was (which leaves me giving it 9 stars instead of 10), it still manages to entertain. AMC has a reputation for tackling social issues. It was the first soap in daytime to introduce an openly gay character and the first soap to tackle the AIDS epidemic with the character of Cindy Chandler. Other relevant story lines have dealt with abortions, incest, racial violence, drunk driving, cocaine addiction, eating disorders, plastic surgery, and the anti-war movement. The show also has typical soapy plots such as evil twins, murder mysteries, and corporate takeovers. Another thing AMC is known for is injecting humor into the show with over-the-top characters. Opal, Billy Clyde Tuggle, Verla Grubbs (played by Carol Burnett), Edna Thornton, and Janet From Another Planet were some of the more popular comical characters throughout the show's history. Famous supercouples are a staple. Jenny & Greg, Cliff & Nina, Angie & Jesse, Natalie & Trevor, and Tad & Dixie all gained huge fan followings. And last (but not least), there's the glamorous and beautiful superstar Erica Kane -- a femme fatale who's been married more times than one can count. All of these elements have made AMC a very entertaining program for the last 36 years. Here's to 36 more!
