Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. (2000 - 2009)

31 December 2009 3:40 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.

Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.

The Foywonder's Ten Worst Horror Films of the Decade

23 December 2009 8:31 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The first decade of the new millennium has come to an end, and that means it is now time for film sites all over the web to begin posting their various retrospectives and lists recalling the decade that was. I generally as a rule dislike such lists because they are always so subjective. Then I said screw it and took it upon myself to do one of my own naming the ten worst horror movies of the past decade. Besides, people love bitching on the Internet about lists like this, and who am I to deny readers yet another excuse to get into pointless flame wars over personal opinions.

Of course, this list is just my personal opinion which is not legally binding ... unless Proposition 304 passes. And we all pray that it will.

I set two rules when putting this list together: Only horror movies that received fairly wide theatrical »

Michelle Rodriguez Can Reveal Her Sexuality If She Want

14 December 2009 1:29 AM, PST | Gossipvita | See recent Gossipvita news »

The ‘Avatar’ actress has long been rumoured to be bisexual or a lesbian despite insisting she isn’t, and says if she had anything to prove to anyone she would do it on camera. She said in an interview with Style magazine: “If I wanted to tell people what I do with my vagina, I’d have made a sex video a long time ago. Largely, people don’t know the whole story about anything. But still they need to put a name on it so they can label it and put it on the side and not dedicate any time to figuring it out. It’s laziness.” Rodriguez – who was romantically linked to her openly bisexual ‘Bloodrayne’ co-star Kristanna Loken in 2006 – also revealed she aspires to be like Angelina Jolie. The 31-year-old actress admires 34-year-old Angelina – who is openly bisexual but currently in a long-term relationship with Brad Pitt »

Ben Kingsley Returns to India to Play Shah Jahan in Taj Mahal

27 November 2009 12:36 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The Guardian reports that after 27 years since he won an Oscar for playing Mohandas Ghandi, Ben Kingsley is set to delve into India’s history books once again, this time as Shah Jahan, the Mogul ruler who commissioned the construction of the Taj Mahal.  The Shah reigned over the Mogul Empire between 1628-1658 and built the Taj Mahal after his favored wife Mumtaz Mahal (to be played by Indian superstar and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) died in childbirth.

Kingsley, who is also a producer on the film, had this to say about the project: “With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the seven wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask ‘why’ and ‘how’ this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being. It is an indelible monument to passion and love. How did the building evolve in the first place, »

Bloodrayne 3, really?

19 November 2009 12:03 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

They aren't making a third game, so why would they make Bloodrayne 3? The simplest answer is, Uwe Boll. Maybe it's the fact that the original Rayne, Kristanna Loken is coming back. My question arises again, why? There's no third game so there's not a plot, of course you can come up with one, but Boll isn't just anyone. I loved the games, even the second one. So I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to go and see the film. Needless to say, this was my first experience with a Uwe Boll film. »

Uwe Boll’s Far Cry Trailer: A Return to Form for Dr. Boll

18 November 2009 8:09 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

After seeing his latest film Rampage at Fantastic Fest just last month, we thought we'd seen a turning point for director Uwe Boll. Finally, the man had delivered a gritty, intense action movie that rose above his usual bit of schlock. For once, he had delivered something worth talking about in a positive way -- worth recommending to friends and countrymen. It had me excited to see where he would go next in his always-busy schedule of film releases. Which brings us to Far Cry, yet another adaptation of a popular video game. Like Boll's previous adaptations of games such as Bloodrayne, House of the Dead, Dungeon Siege and Postal, Far Cry appears to be a mess of the highest order. At least, that's what I've gathered from this first teaser trailer, which comes courtesy of IGN. Since his role in Inglourious Basterds, I've thought Til Schwiger to be one of the more badass actors in Hollywood »

This sees DVD release via Vivendi Entertainment on November 24th and, in my opinion, looks way better than the rest of Boll's work. »

Exclusive Interview: Catching Up with Kristanna Loken

15 November 2009 11:10 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

At its core, acting is really just a grand lie told in the name of entertainment. It’s a bit incongruous, then, that when actors walk off the stage, we expect the opposite from them: the truth. We want to know who they are and what they stand for — and Kristanna Loken is one of the few actors who tells us.

Loken, who publicly came out as bisexual four years ago, has appeared in T3: Rise of the Machines, Painkiller Jane and The L Word. She also starred in Lime Salted Love, an independent film that became available on DVD last month.

In this exclusive interview with AfterEllen.com, Loken opens up for the first time about her separation from husband Noah Danby and about the new love in her life.

Uwe Boll Squeezes 'BloodRayne' from a Turnip

5 November 2009 9:01 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I think you should just go ahead and ask Kristanna Loken out. Clearly, she'll say yes to just about anything. Director/pugilist/laughingstock Uwe Boll says Loken will return for yet another BloodRayne movie. Seriously: They're not done making BloodRayne movies. Somehow.

Boll tells DreadCentral that BloodRayne 3: Warhammer, which might be the greatest album title Armored Saint never used, will shoot beginning in January. Also, we'll have Nazis this time around. Can it get any better? Can it get more Uwesque? I think not. »

Has 'Prince of Persia' Nailed What It Means to be a Video Game Adaptation?

Jake Gyllenhaal puts on his sexy face in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Photo: Walt Disney Pictures I'm not much of a gamer, and that may in fact be an understatement considering in the last few years the only games I have played and finished are "Gears of War," "Burnout," "Uncharted," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" and just a couple of days ago "Uncharted 2." I don't know where that places me in the gamer revolution, but considering that's about 6 years of gaming outside of playing a little "Tiger Woods," "NBA Street" and "Hot Shots Golf" I would say I am on the outside looking in. However, I'd like to think I know enough to at least open up a discussion concerning the growing trend of adapting video games into feature films, primarily based on the recently released trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a film »

Uwe Boll Claims Bloodrayne 3 is Happening. What Did We Do Wrong?

5 November 2009 11:01 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Did you, your friends and family, or anyone else on this God-forsaken planet really enjoy Uwe Boll’s adaptation of the strangely popular 2002 videogame “Bloodrayne?” More importantly, did anyone even watch the direct-to-video sequel? Regardless of the film’s popularity or profitability, the good doctor recently told the fine chaps at Dread Central that he’s currently prepping the third installment in the series, which should, according to the much-maligned director, contain “plenty of Nazi mayhem.” This is actually kind of disappointing news, as I was hoping “Big Motha Truckers” would be Boll’s next project. Way to crush my hopes and dreams, boyo. Much appreciated. Uwe Boll’s “Bloodrayne 3″ proclamation, in his own words: Bloodrayne 3.. Yep.. If going to the wild west wasn’t enough for you get ready for another dose. But at least this time they are finally doing what they should have done all along and »

Uwe Boll: Bloodrayne 3: Warhammer Shooting in January

4 November 2009 5:20 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Andrew Kasch just called in from Afm after his yearly conversation with Doctor Boll, in which the Mad German dropped an update on us regarding everyone's favorite sword swinging vampire, Bloodrayne.

The third film in his trilogy, now entitled Bloodrayne 3: Warhammer, will begin shooting this January with Kristanna Loken back in the lead role. Even better -- after a semi-sour trip through medieval times and a dismal outing in the Old West, we're finally gonna get what fans of the games have a been clamoring for -- a Nazi-laden World War II setting!

About time, Uwe. You move in mysterious ways. Look for more soon!

World's Worst Director is Back: Uwe Boll's 'Darfur'

4 November 2009 7:33 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I would very much like to begin and program an Uwe Boll Film Festival. It would truly be one of a kind. BloodRayne, Alone in the Dark, In the Name of the King, House of the Dead, Postal - how could you go wrong? On second thought, don't answer that.

Boll keeps working, though most of the universe is at a loss as to how. He has four films in production, and managed to work in four movies this year, too. All of this on the heels of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award from the Razzies, which is not the sort of thing you go to film school in hopes of attaining.

One of his many upcoming films is Darfur, which as you can imagine, is Uwe's sensitive, artistic interpretation of one of the worst genocides in modern civilization. Gee, I wonder if there will be blood. Actually, in the interest of fairness, »

First Trailer for Uwe Boll's Film About the Genocide in Darfur

2 November 2009 4:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Dr. Uwe Boll, the notorious filmmaker behind the likes of House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, In the Name of the King: a Dungeon Siege Tale, Alone in the Dark, and Postal, has made a film - a serious one - about the ongoing conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan. I imagine you're as surprised as everyone else.

I first heard about the film, titled simply Darfur, about a month ago at the Fantastic Fest Q&A for Boll's man-on-a-killing-spree movie Rampage. The director casually referred to the film as if it was no big deal, though it was obvious that everyone in the room was as stunned as I. When pressed for more information, Boll explained that he felt the world was turning a blind eye to the crimes against humanity that are committed daily in Darfur, and that as an artist, the »

The plot: Two attractive college students - the innocent and scholarly Sara and the manipulative and sexy Alex, become more than friends when they make a pact to kill off each other's nemesis. But Alex soon grabs the upper hand and Sara discovers she is being set up for murder.

Expect it in 2010.

Fantastic Fest: Uwe Boll, Auteur

5 October 2009 11:44 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Two things spread quickly at film festivals: upper respiratory tract infections and buzz. And the buzz spreading around Fantastic Fest last week was that the impossible had happened: that Uwe Boll, the infamous director of notoriously (and, at times, enjoyably) terrible films like "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne," had made a good movie. Film School Rejects declared Boll's new film "Rampage" "sick, violent, and fun"; /Film called it "not just good in comparison to the rest of his filmography, but a good movie in its own right."

Usually Boll's movies aren't just bad, they're splendidly bad. They're lazily plotted, haphazardly shot and confusingly edited, and yet, somehow, in the alchemical confluence of all that badness they take on a certain transcendent magic. Many of his past efforts were financed through a now-defunct German tax shelter that, if I understand it correctly, only required independent film investors to pay taxes »
