Paul Giamatti: 'I'm clearly not Brad Pitt'

12 November 2009 1:27 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Paul Giamatti tends to play moody defeatists and rageful misanthropes. Which is just the way he likes it

'I'm clearly not Brad Pitt, and I'm never going to be Brad Pitt," says Paul Giamatti, closely inspecting his coffee cup in a Polish restaurant in a leafy neighbourhood of Brooklyn. "But I don't think I'd want to be Brad Pitt, you know? So that's Ok."

This is partly just a reference to Giamatti's "character-actor" looks, but also to something deeper: a sense of composure, of being comfortable in one's own skin, that the archetypal Hollywood star exudes but both Giamatti and his characters tend to lack. "You know that thing where you can just fuckin' stand there and people can't take their eyes off the person? I don't have that weight of charisma," he explains. "That's not me. If I just stand there, it's going to be boring. You're going to »

George Clooney Looks Up, Finds ‘The Descendants’ at Searchlight

3 November 2009 11:09 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

George Clooney is currently flying around the world, promoting his latest (and possibly best) performance in Jason Reitman's drama Up in the Air and his hilarious performance in The Men Who Stare at Goats -- and not to mention his voice work in Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, all of which hit theaters in the two months -- but that doesn't mean he isn't looking for new work. And as these things always go, Clooney is finding work easily as the Oscar buzz builds. According to Variety, Clooney has signed on to the Fox Searchlight produced family drama The Descendants, based on the debut novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The story follows a wealthy landowner who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife's lover in hopes of keeping his family together. The film, which will be directed by Sideways helmer Alexander Payne, will begin shooting in Hawaii in February. Hmm »

George Clooney And Alexander Payne Team Up For 'The Descendants'

3 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

George Clooney is about to go from staring at goats to looking up his relatives in "The Descendants," a new family dramedy from Fox Searchlight.

Variety reports that Clooney is in talks to headline "The Descendants" for director Alexander Payne, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed "Sideways" and "Election." The screenplay, penned by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, is based on a novel of the same name written by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The movie will start shooting in Hawaii this February.

According to Hemmings' website, "The Descendants" focuses on Matthew King, a wealthy landowner with Hawaiian royalty in his blood. Life is far from perfect for Matthew — he has two irascible daughters in the form of ten-year-old Scottie and seventeen-year-old Alex, not to mention the fact that his high maintenance wife has slipped into an irreversible coma.

Making the impending death of Matthew's wife even worse is the fact that »

George Clooney is certainly finishing strong this year with a trio of releases hitting theaters over the next two months. Clooney will next be seen in The Men Who Stare at Goats (opening November 6th) followed by Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox also this month and Up in the Air later in December. But despite his busy schedule promoting these films and shooting the Anton Corbijn directed thriller The American (formerly known as A Very Private Gentlemen) it looks like Clooney is adding yet another role to his roster as Variety says he's in talks to lead Sideways director Alexander Payne's first film in five years, The Descendants. The Potential is There for George Clooney to Star in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants

3 November 2009 9:30 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Alexander Payne must choose his films very carefully because he has directed only four of them in over thirteen years. Sideways was possibly his best and most complete film yet, and so his followup has been anticipated. According to Variety, Payne is working on a film called The Descendants, and George Clooney could potentially come on board to star. I know that potential is sometimes like saying that the Large Hadron Collider could potentially create a blackhole that swallows the planet, but this one sounds like it’s happening. Variety has the details: The actor, who is currently shooting Anton Corbijn-directed thriller “The American,” is in talks to topline “Descendants,” which centers on a wealthy landowner who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife’s lover in the hopes of keeping his family together. Project, which marks Payne’s first feature in five years, is scheduled »

Clooney will likely have Descendants

3 November 2009 7:58 AM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Georhe Clooney is in talks to frontline The Descendants for director Alexander Payne. If he takes the job Clooney will play a father/husband who goes on a search to locate the man who was his wife's secret boyfriend for years. As the director of Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt and Sideways, it sounds like the kind of off kilter dramatic material that Payne is known for.

Variety notes that the film, which is in the chute at Fox Searchlight, would begin filming next February in Hawaii. The movie's screenplay is based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. »

George Clooney Descends Into Payne

George Clooney is making a Sideways move. The creator of Sideways, meanwhile, is making a George Clooney move. The star is teaming up with Sideways' Oscar-winning writer-director, Alexander Payne, for The Descendants, a no doubt Academy-baiting dramedy due out in 2010. Per Variety, the film (Payne's first since 2004's wine-soaked statue collector) will follow a wealthy landowner who, in attempt to keep his family together, picks up sticks with his two daughters on a quest to find his wife's new lover. The hard part will be getting the audience to believe anyone would leave Clooney in the first place. Cameras roll this February in Hawaii (it's a tough job, but someone's... »

George Clooney in Talks for Alexander Payne's 'The Descendants'

3 November 2009 6:48 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

While he's one of the main men of superstardom, George Clooney also keeps one foot firmly in the world of quirk and strangeness. He may be Mr. Ocean, but he's also the dude who was in Return of the Killer Tomatoes and The Men Who Stare at Goats. Clooney knows how to be ridiculous, and now he's jumping into a whole new world of quirk.

Variety reports that the actor is in talks to star in the new Alexander Payne dramedy The Descendants. His first feature since Sideways, the film got cooking back in August and follows a rich landowner and father who decides to grab his two hard-to-handle daughters and search for his wife's lover in an attempt to keep his family together -- while she's in a coma after a catamaran accident. ...I still can't fathom the logic behind this one.

This is definitely one of those it's about time! »

George Clooney considers Alexander Payne’s Descendants

3 November 2009 3:24 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

George Clooney is busy. Not only is he saving the world … Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, but he also has tons of films coming out and it’s showing signs of slowing down.

Now comes word from Variety that Clooney is considering the lead in the Alexander Payne family dramedy The Descendants.

You can see him before that in The Men Who Stare as Goats this Friday (Nov. 6) and the upcoming films Fantastic Mr. Fox and Up in the Air.

He’s also currently shooting The American, a thriller directed by Anton Corbijn.

But now back to Descendants … it’s a film about a wealthy man who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife’s lover in hopes of keeping the family together.

The screenplay is written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash and based on Kaui Hart Hemmings’ debut novel of the same name.

George Clooney May Go Sideways With The Descendants

George Clooney is dipping his toe into the world of mildly amusing yet moving Fox Searchlight movies. You know the type, it.s the Little Miss Sunshine genre in which an eccentric group of characters undertakes some sort of journey, laughs are had and lessons are learned. Clooney.s version may come from Alexander Payne who, as the former director of Sideways, is no stranger to smile-worthy movies. Payne.s movie is called The Descendants and Variety says Clooney.s only circling the project. That either means he.s still in the decision phase, or it means the projects dead and he.s planning to swoop down and gobble up the remains. I.m betting it.s the former. So what.s it about? Clooney One of Alexander Payne's 'Descendants'

2 November 2009 11:03 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

George Clooney may have found his next project. He has three films in theaters in the next two months - The Men Who Stare at Goats, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Up in the Air. Then he's got The American with Anton Corbjin, which he's filming now in Italy. But now he has an Alexander Payne movie in his future.

Clooney will begin shooting The Descendants next February in Hawaii, reports Variety. It'll be Payne's first movie as a director since...uh...Sideways? Yes, that's the one. That's five years ago, if you can believe it. Instead of directing, Payne has been in the shadows as a producer on a handful of films since. But he's back again, although uncharacteristically, he's not writing this time. Perhaps the fact that his last screenplay credit is I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry tells us something. »

George Clooney Up For The Descendants

2 November 2009 10:40 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

George Clooney and Alexander Payne would seem to be a match made in heaven – so we welcome today’s news that Clooney is in talks to star in Payne’s latest movie, the comedy drama, The Descendants. We have only this to ask: what the hell took you guys so long?Clooney would play a wealthy landowner who, in a desperate bid to keep his family together, takes his two young daughters on a trip to meet his wife’s lover. So, as ever with Payne, it’s all too human and all too complicated. The Fox Searchlight movie will be Payne’s first since Sideways, back in 2004 (so again we have to ask: what the hell took you so long?) and, curiously, it’ll be the first time he’s directed someone else’s screenplay, with Nat Faxon and Jim Rash adapting Kaui Hart Hemmings’ novel.Filming is scheduled »

George Clooney in Talks to Star in Alexander Payne’s Next Film, The Descendants

While I enjoy poking fun at most actors who never seem to slow down and it feels like I’m announcing a new project for them every week, I never mind it when that actor is George Clooney.  Even when I’m not crazy about the film, like “The Good German” or “Intolerable Cruelty”, I still think he’s great in it.  You’ll find that there’s no escaping Clooney for the rest of 2009 since he has three movies coming out over the next two months.  But since he’s great in “The Men Who Stare at Goats” and “Up in the Air”, I don’t think you’ll mind (I have yet to see “Fantastic Mr. Fox” but I don’t think his voice work is going to let me down).

Even though Clooney is currently in Italy shooting Anton Corbijn’s spy-thriller “The American”, he’s already »
