Avatar tops $1billion at box office, soars past The Dark Knight

9 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When James Cameron's Avatar came out, there was a lot of talk about whether it would ever come close to the box office total of his previous film, 1997's Titanic.

That film made $1.8billion worldwide to take and, so far, retain the record for the largest global gross of all time.

But the title now looks like it's under threat after Avatar today crossed the $1billion mark.

The film raked in $352million in North America and $670million overseas according to The Numbers, a total of $1.02billion.

The 3D sci-fi epic now stands at No4 in the global chart after just 17 days on release, already passing The Dark Knight and creeping ever closer to Titanic.

The top 10 highest-earning films worldwide are:

1 Titanic (1997) $1.85bn

2 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) $1.13bn

3 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) $1.07bn

4 Avatar(2009) $1bn

5 The Dark Knight (2008) $1.002bn

6 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone »
