Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts is about to start and he is enjoying the summer vacation with his friends. They get the tickets to The Quidditch World Cup Final but after the match is over, people dressed like Lord Voldemort's 'Death Eaters' set a fire to all the visitors' tents, coupled with the appearance of Voldemort's symbol, the 'Dark Mark' in the sky, which causes a frenzy across the magical community. That same year, Hogwarts is hosting 'The Triwizard Tournament', a magical tournament between three well-known schools of magic : Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The contestants have to be above the age of 17, and are chosen by a magical object called Goblet of Fire. On the night of selection, however, the Goblet spews out four names instead of the usual three, with Harry unwittingly being selected as the Fourth Champion. Since the magic cannot be reversed...

Early drafts had Ron's estranged brother Percy appearing in a key supporting role but it was written out in the final drafts. In an interview, Chris Rankin, who plays Percy, revealed that his contract of the franchise stipulates that he must appear in four films; the first three, with the option of appearing in either this movie or the next one,
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Given the fact that Percy appears much longer in the latter, he opted out of the film in favour of appearing in the next one.

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers):
In the scene following the second task (when Dumbledore is announcing the standings) you can see Neville with Karkaroff behind him. Karkaroff has his hand on Nevile's shoulder. Not only is Karkaroff from a different school, but he is a Death Eater who knew that Neville's parents were aurors (he implicates their torturers in the Pensieve scene) and would not want to touch him as he would be viewed as a blood traitor.
