George Mainwaring in a Victor Meldrew situation, 24 November 2007
9/10
Author: Victor Meldrew from Manchester

As user Ace of Wanda says, Arthur Lowe's performance as Potter is quite like Victor Meldrew. I see bits of Victor in the character, but I see more of George Mainwaring, a character he had played in my favourite sitcom "Dads Army" Lowe's performance as Mainwaring is in my opinion the finest comic acting I've ever seen and probably will ever see.

Redvers Potter lives with his long suffering wife Aileen. Potter owns "Potter Mints" In the first episode, he has decided to retire, due to suffering from heart burn. He now finds himself with too much time to himself, so starts annoying other people, most of all his wife.

This show was written by one of my all time favourite script writers, Roy Clarke. His writing is brilliant in Last of the Summer Wine (the early episodes), First of the Summer Wine, Open all Hours and Keeping up Appearances. Whearas Victor was made annoyed by things that really annoy people generally, Potter was like Mainwaring and would be annoyed by things that wouldn't really bother many people. Harry H Corbett played a role in the second series. Due to the sad death of Arthur Lowe in April 1982, series three saw Potter being played by a different actor (Weird for a sitcom. If the main actor dies, they normally call it a day) the actor being Robin Bailey. Then that was the end of it. I've only seen the first episode and was quite impressed. Sadly this series has now been forgotten. Hopefully it will be available on DVD one day.

Best Episode: Series 1, episode 1: Because it's the only one I've seen
