Goldie Hawn fought back tears when she visited Kate Hudson on the set of movie musical Nine - because seeing her daughter dance made her so proud.
The Almost Famous beauty stars alongside a top cast, including Penelope Cruz, Dame Judi Dench and Nicole Kidman, in the highly-anticipated film, and she invited her mum along to watch the shoot.
And Hawn, who began her career her as a dancer, was overwhelmed when she saw her beloved daughter take centre stage.
Hudson says, "I always sang and I always danced and I always performed. My mother was a big believer that if you want to do this in your life you have to get up and go for it.
"She came to the set and it was fun for her. I think it was emotional for her too because that's how she started her career.
"She was a dancer and she really dedicated a lot of her life to dancing. For her to see me dancing with a chorus of other dancers was a big thing for her because that's where she started, as a go-go girl." »

They say Italians do it better. Well, what about actors pretending to be Italians? Does that count? Looks like we’ll find out over the holidays when the new big-stars, big-budget musical Nine hits the big screen.
The film stars Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard and Fergie as a bevy of beautiful women (not too much of a stretch) involved in the life Guido Contini, a playboy Italian film director in the midst of a midlife crisis played by Daniel Day-Lewis (slightly more of a stretch). A new trailer gives us a taste of the all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza.
Well that was, um, flashy. While I’m excited about the prospect of a film with so many female stars, I’m still somewhere just short of wowed. Perhaps it’s because Kate Hudson hasn’t been in a good movie since Almost Famous. Perhaps it’s because all »

The new trailer for Nine is all Kate Hudson most of the time. Yes, we get shots of Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, and Fergie's breasts, but it's Hudson's "Cinema Italiano" production number that's the focus. Which makes me wonder if Hudson herself is supposed to be a draw, or if the filmmakers just wanted us to see a sparkly set and costume and her song was an eye-catcher? I'm going with the latter. Hudson doesn't have the best track record and needs Nine to get her back on track. At the very least, it gives her something worthwhile »

I'll hand it to Paste, which has a bigger reputation as a music magazine, on the occasion of its top ten movies of the decade list. Actually, the list runs to 50, which is probably way too long, especially for a collection of films that has as many expected choices as esoteric ones.
But the good news is I don't know too many people anywhere who wouldn't have at least one of this top five in their own top five. Two foreign films (the revolutionary City of God and the delectable Amélie), join the giant blockbuster trilogy (The Lord of the Rings), the sentimental favorite (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and the classic you probably forgot to include on your short list because you weren't sure it came out in this decade (Almost Famous). That's a no-miss top five.
I'd probably change two or three of them myself, but when »

As "Pirate Radio" opens today, American audiences will have a chance to tune in to a phenomenon that occured in Britain 40 years ago: pirate, or illegal, radio operators went out on ships into international waters in the North Sea to operate their rock and pop stations. The movie creates a composite of that movement, turning it into one big boat of lusty rock 'n' roll lovers, including one American import The Count, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The role is somewhat reminiscent of his performance in "Almost Famous" as Lester Bangs, but the outsiderism of The Count can be more... »

If you know me personally, or read anything I write, you know that I worship the 1960s and the music of the time. I grew up behind the seat belt of my dad's Chevy Silverado, driving around town with the Oldies station blaring out songs about Brown Sugar tasting so good, My Guitar Gently weeping, and People Trying to put down my father's generation. I fell in love with grinding guitars, amps that never worked quite right, and the homemade sound of just trying to be louder and more soulful than the guys who were just on stage. As if it were really hard to impress me when a soundtrack includes some of the coolest Rock 'n' Roll of the mid-60s, Pirate Radio (aka The Boat That Rocked) goes far beyond the Whiter Shade of Pale in order to build an irreverent story that captures the (romanticized) spirit of the time and become one of the »

According to the beginning of Pirate Radio (aka The Boat That Rocked), in the 1960s, the BBc would only play 2 hours of pop and rock music a week. In the land that gave the world The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who, their own citizens weren't able to find a place to listen to it. Until a barrage of "pirate radio" stations emerged, transmitting non-stop rock from boats just on the side of international waters. This is the fictionalized accounts of what happened on one of these boats.
I make it sound very unappealing, don't I? Quite the contrary, actually. Pirate Radio is a charming ensemble comedy that busts out the seams with terrific actors and a fond love of rock music. It stands up there with the greats of classic rock cinema, perhaps even overtaking Almost Famous in my esteem. Although if we're comparing Pirate Radio to other films, »

Would you want your children to know you were the real-life inspiration for a famous tale of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll? Fast Times at Ridgemont High holds up as a heady brew of authentic teen life in the late 70s / early 80s, mixed with a fine sense of the absurd and served up by an amazing cast. It's definitely a teen sex comedy that Doesn't suck. The movie's 25th anniversary two years ago inspired plenty of "Where Are They Now" recollections; our own Erik Davis offered his observations on an eye-opening gallery of "then and now" images for the cast.
Before the movie, however, there was the book, and before the book, there were the real-life students of Clairemont High School in San Diego, California. Cameron Crowe, then 22, went undercover at the school in 1979 to research a book on teen life. He'd graduated from another area school in »

Now that most of us acquire our music online these days, radio DJs don't have the same sway as taste-makers that they used to. But in the '70s, the final word in rock music was Rodney Bigenheimer. In George Hickenlooper's 2003 documentary about the infamous DJ and rock music icon, Mayor of Sunset Strip, we are shown Bigenheimer as an awkward and strange little fellow who, in the end, did it all for the music. Now, thanks to the nice folks at SlashControl you can now watch the documentary as one of their collection of (pretty awesome) free movies.
You wouldn't know it to look at him, but Bigenheimer was one of the biggest names in the rock music scene, and was credited with helping to break bands like The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Nirvana, and even Coldplay. Bigenheimer has been relegated to the 'graveyard shift' these days at Kroq, »

Kate Hudson was left feeling miserable when she recently quit smoking - because the extra weight she gained during her nicotine battle fuelled a string of pregnancy rumours.
The Almost Famous actress, who is dating baseball star Alex Rodriguez, was recently forced to deny she was expecting a baby with her lover after pictures appeared in the press showing her sporting a swollen stomach.
Hudson puts the weight gain down to her decision to give up cigarettes - and she was shocked to see her body battles become headline news.
She tells Britain's Ok magazine, "Quitting meant eating more. Then, there were rumours in the press saying I was pregnant. Later somebody said, 'When did you quit smoking?' And I was like, 'Right about the time everybody thought I was pregnant.'" »

I’m no music expert what with their fancy degrees and ability to appreciate music beyond “This sounds good.” But I do know lists and lists generate controversy and controversy equals traffic! And with their patented “slideshow” format which creates more hits based on an itemized story, EW.com has a real racket going!
Well, we just listed it like normal people after the jump. Take a look, see if you agree, and scream your disbelief at how a certain album you love wasn’t included. Also, remember that this is a list of soundtracks which are usually a collection of songs used in a movie as opposed to a score which is usually the instrumental accompaniment to the film created by a single composer (although there are obviously scores created by more than one composer).
If you want to click through the list like a chump, click here. It »

Joliet, Il - Dan Aykroyd is on a mission from vodka. The Blues Brother is cruising around the country in a Damnation Alley Rv promoting his Crystal Skull premium vodka. He rolled into my town and I was compelled to see the man.
He was appearing at a liquor store on a Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. What sort of crowd could he draw? I showed up at 1 p.m. with my four month old designated driver. There was already 400 people in line. Another 300 people end up behind us. Luckily Dan’s traveling partner announced that even though Dan was schedule to leave at 4:30, he’d be signing his bottles until the last person went home happy.
Why not? Each bottle cost $50. I’ve been told that there’s only two types of vodka in the world: Good vodka and vodka that makes you go blind and piss blood. »

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?
