Now that most of us acquire our music online these days, radio DJs don't have the same sway as taste-makers that they used to. But in the '70s, the final word in rock music was Rodney Bigenheimer. In George Hickenlooper's 2003 documentary about the infamous DJ and rock music icon, Mayor of Sunset Strip, we are shown Bigenheimer as an awkward and strange little fellow who, in the end, did it all for the music. Now, thanks to the nice folks at SlashControl you can now watch the documentary as one of their collection of (pretty awesome) free movies.
You wouldn't know it to look at him, but Bigenheimer was one of the biggest names in the rock music scene, and was credited with helping to break bands like The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Nirvana, and even Coldplay. Bigenheimer has been relegated to the 'graveyard shift' these days at Kroq, »

Kate Hudson was left feeling miserable when she recently quit smoking - because the extra weight she gained during her nicotine battle fuelled a string of pregnancy rumours.
The Almost Famous actress, who is dating baseball star Alex Rodriguez, was recently forced to deny she was expecting a baby with her lover after pictures appeared in the press showing her sporting a swollen stomach.
Hudson puts the weight gain down to her decision to give up cigarettes - and she was shocked to see her body battles become headline news.
She tells Britain's Ok magazine, "Quitting meant eating more. Then, there were rumours in the press saying I was pregnant. Later somebody said, 'When did you quit smoking?' And I was like, 'Right about the time everybody thought I was pregnant.'" »

I’m no music expert what with their fancy degrees and ability to appreciate music beyond “This sounds good.” But I do know lists and lists generate controversy and controversy equals traffic! And with their patented “slideshow” format which creates more hits based on an itemized story, EW.com has a real racket going!
Well, we just listed it like normal people after the jump. Take a look, see if you agree, and scream your disbelief at how a certain album you love wasn’t included. Also, remember that this is a list of soundtracks which are usually a collection of songs used in a movie as opposed to a score which is usually the instrumental accompaniment to the film created by a single composer (although there are obviously scores created by more than one composer).
If you want to click through the list like a chump, click here. It »

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

Kurt Vile might be mistaken for any number of heady garage-rock acts that write songs about weed, man. A 7-minute-plus song called “Freak Train” lends credence to the proposition, and a subsequent soundscape titled “Goodbye, Freaks” does little to refute it. But Vile’s second full-length is notable for accomplishing a difficult feat: balancing a willful lack of self-control with a disciplined, oddly ascetic compositional approach. Most of the songs on Childish Prodigy involve a repetitive, fingerpicked guitar pattern that calls to mind charming classic rock, of the sort found on the Almost Famous soundtrack. But for the most part ... »

Sometimes it’s amazing what a man with just a camera and his bare convictions and a sense for the timing of history can do. The La Times has an article about Kristopher Belman, whose documentary “More Than a Game” is the culmination of seven years that started with a Loyola Marymount’s student desire to film a sports team that not even “60 Minutes” had access to – the documentary was originally meant to be a 10-minute short chronicling a basketball practice with LeBron James and his St. Vincent-St. Mary teammates – but blossomed into a full length feature film that is premiering in New York and Los Angeles this week. La Times quotes Belman as saying: “I felt like [the Cameron Crowe character] in ‘Almost Famous,’ except I was traveling with a high school basketball team instead of Stillwater. It was exactly like a rock ‘n’ roll tour, with bodyguards clearing the way for the »

Offbeat actress Zooey Deschanel married Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard at a private ceremony near Seattle, Washington, over the weekend. Deschanel, also has a new movie coming out in which she stars for the second time and could end up challenging Jennifer Aniston as the queen of romantic comedy. Only close friends, including her “Your Highness” co-stars James Franco and Natalie Portman, and family were invited to the ceremony. Deschanel’s breakthough role was in Cameron Crowe's “Almost Famous,” with Kate Hudson. It was her second film. She debuted in quirky comedy “Mumford” with Hope Davis and Jason Lee in 1999. But she was almost type-cast as a supporting actress until she won a starring role in “Yes Man” with Jim Carrey. »

Jack Black, what did you get yourself into? The funnyman walked in on an interview with Kid Cudi, Swizz Beatz and Fonzworth Bentley at Sunday night's Video Music Awards. Who knew Bent had jokes that would knock Black off balance? We also hollered at Timbaland at the VMAs. There's a little bit of controversy about his collaborations with Jay-z on The Blueprint 3. Tim's tracks were the first to leak, but the super-producer doesn't talk like he's stressing anything. He said him and Jay set the bar when it comes to their collabos. Finally, Trick Daddy is putting out his album tomorrow. Daddy Dollars is keeping it real street these days.

Four years ago, a friend of mine came home from Toronto disappointed by the premiere of "Elizabethtown," Cameron Crowe's ill-fated, deeply personal story of a man coming home to bury his father. The director of "Almost Famous" and "Jerry Maguire," Crowe was a true heir to Hal Ashby when it came to making melancholy and emotionally moving mainstream entertainments, yet when his cut of "Elizabethtown" (that was ultimately trimmed down in running time) failed to win over audiences here, it was hard to imagine when someone would attempt tp do so again.
"Up in the Air" will be easy to overpraise -- it touches on larger themes of mass unemployment, cultural alienation and technology as a crutch. But ultimately, it's really an expertly done character study that's a dramatic change of pace from director Jason Reitman's previous two films, "Thank You for Smoking" and "Juno," comedies that led »

Zooey Deschanel is set to wed her fiance Ben Gibbard later this month, it has been reported. The pair, who has been engaged since December last year, is said to hold their wedding in Seattle. "Zooey is in Belfast with James Franco and Natalie Portman filming 'Your Highness' but will return at the end of September for her ceremony in Seattle," a source tells the New York Post.
Exact wedding date and venue for the reported nuptials are not disclosed though. Besides, neither Zooey nor Ben has issued a confirming statement regarding the wedding report.
Zooey Deschanel got engaged to Ben Gibbard, who is Death Cab for Cutie's frontman, before Christmas last year. At that time a source close to the pair said that both stars were "so thrilled".
Love life aside, Zooey is best recognized for her role as Anita Miller in 2000 movie "Almost Famous". Her »

Turner Classic Movies is honoring New York's Fashion Week with a list of the films it has deemed the most sartorially influential of all time. First, a look at their Top 15 (in chronological order): Pandora's Box (1929) Letty Lynton (1932) It Happened One Night (1934) Pat and Mike (1952) Rear Window (1954) Rebel Without a Cause (1955) And God Created Woman (1956) Auntie Mame (1958) Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) Bonnie and Clyde (1967) The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) Shaft (1971) Annie Hall (1977) Saturday Night Fever (1977) Flashdance (1983) Most notable is the '50s- and '60s-heavy lineup -- which perhaps makes some sense, as films were likely the dominant way style was passed from Hollywood to the masses (as opposed to the TV, Us Weekly and internet of today). And there's no arguing with the likes of Breakfast at Tiffany's (which I would deem the most fashionable movie of all time), Bonnie and Clyde, Shaft, Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever, and Flashdance. »
