John Cusack has made 17 films in four years. We've found the ones that have gone all-but straight to DVD and watched them...
John Cusack is a bit of a Hollywood oddity. There’s no pattern to the type of movie he will choose to do, so he’s always kept us on our toes. Sure, he’ll make a dumb action movie, but that will often afford him the chance to make a few smaller gambles later on. Up until the last few years he’s played the system very well, but recently his ethic appears to have, um, waned? A little?
Since the heady days of Say Anything and Sixteen Candles he’s come to represent a sort of slightly weird-looking, awkwardly charming, offbeat everyman that men aged 18-49 can look at and go 'me'” - which is fine. There’s a place for that, as...

Note: The piece from Scott Neumyer originally ran a few years ago, but we love it so much it's become a tradition to repost it every St. Patrick's Day. Enjoy! I’m going to tell you something that you might find hard to believe: I just watched all six Leprechaun films back to back, in one marathon viewing session, so you don’t have to. Ah… the things I do for you loyal Movies.com readers. You’re so lucky. Not only did I watch the Leprechaun films, but I also kept running totals and analyzed each film to determine how they stack up against each other. (* Thanks to fine folks at Exclusiv Vodka for providing enough alcohol to get us through this project. By the time we got through Leprechaun 4: In Space it was all gone. Man, that’s a tough one to...

St. Patrick’s Day is another fun holiday to celebrate with a few good movies between gulps of green beverages and hunts for that one person who forgot what day it was and will get your full wrath in one hard pinch. I wanted to take a little time to list a few films which will help you rewind after a hard day at work or at the local Irish pub. These are just a few of my favorites and a couple suggestions that give horror fans and family folks an alternative to the usual fare they’re bombarded with every year around this time.

Dan O'Grady (Shay Duffin) steals 100 gold coins from a leprechaun (Warwick Davis in a role far from his cuddly one as Wicket the Ewok) while on vacation in Ireland. The leprechaun follows him home, but Dan locks the murderous midget in a crate, held...

These so-bad-they're-great horror movies are perfect for gorehounds and comedy fans.
Halloween is arguably the greatest of all holidays. First off, as an adult, Halloween is the perfect excuse to marathon-watch the scariest, goriest, most pants-soiling horror movies available. Secondly, adults can buy their own candy, and none of it will be an eraser, gum or three dirty pennies.

But what if you don't like being scared, and would rather watch a violent, gory scream-fest that makes you laugh? Well, you might be a crazy serial killer, in which case, we can't help you. But if that's not the case, check out our list of 13 awful horror movies that are so wonderfully terrible you can't help but love them.

There’s only one director who can claim to have introduced the world to Nicole Kidman (in 1983’s BMX Bandits) and directed two Leprechaun films (1995’s Leprechaun 3 and 1997’s Leprechaun 4: In Space). That director’s name? Brian Trenchard-Smith.

How did a low budget horror movie about a diminutive Irish monster spawn five sequels, a new reboot, and the career of Jennifer Aniston? EW tracks the deranged history of the Leprechaun franchise.
British actor Warwick Davis says he has “specific” fans—well-wishers who want to discuss just one of the several fantasy franchises in which he has appeared. “People talk about Star Wars, people talk about Harry Potter,” he explains, “and people talk about Leprechaun.”

Comic-Con may be one of the biggest movie-related shindigs on the face of the planet, but it still makes space for some of life’s smaller—not to mention Irish-er—things. That’s in reference, of course, to Leprechaun: Origins, the horror reboot starring WWE wrestler Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl as the titular Emerald Isle monster.
To mark today’s Leprechaun-featuring WWE Studios and Lionsgate panel at Comic-Con, EW is exclusively debuting a sequence from the film which boasts the first look at the new Leprechaun himself. At last year’s New York Comic-Con, Leprechaun: Origins director Zach Lipovsky described his movie as “terrifying.

Back in 2012, Lionsgate made the surprise announcement that, as part of its beautiful new friendship with WWE Studios, it was developing a reboot of the mind-boggling Leprechaun franchise. VFX veteran Zach Lipovsky was placed in the director's chair a year later, and this being a WWE project it transpired that it was all being set up as a vehicle for diminutive wrestler Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl. And now, from the halls of Comic-Con, comes the first promo image for Leprechaun: Origins, showcasing a shadowed Lep in profile in a leafy graveyard. He doesn't look very much like Warwick Davis anymore...If you're new here, the original Leprechaun came out in 1993, starring Davis as the titular murderous imp (mad as hell about being swizzed out of his Lucky Charms gold), and providing a pre-Friends starring role for Jennifer Aniston. It was released by Trimark, which Lionsgate swallowed in 2000.It spawned an amazing...

Check out this trailer to a new getaway thriller called Drive Hard that stars John Cusack and Thomas Jane. The movie was directed Brian Trenchard-Smith, who is the director of Leprechaun 4: In Space. Jane plays a race car driver, and Cusack plays a bank robber. Before you write off the movie due to lack of confidence in the director, just watch the trailer. It actually looks like it could be a fun movie worth checking out. You really can't go wrong Cusack and Jane, and it seems like they make a solid on-screen team.

Now here’s a movie we can have fun with — as long as we strap on our seat belts and try not to take it too seriously.
Drive Hard, directed by cult filmmaker Brian Trenchard-Smith (Leprechaun 4: In Space, Airforce 2: Down), stars John Cusack as a bank robber named Simon Keller who recruits ex-Formula 1 champion Peter Robert (Thomas Jane) — now working as a driving instructor — to be his getaway driver after Keller robs a bank. Fun? Yes. Is there a point to the film? We’re not entirely sure… but then again, isn’t that true of most heist films?...

Drive Hard may sound like a Wayans-style spoof but just take one look at John Cusack and Thomas Jane in this new trailer, fresh in via Indiewire, and ask yourself: are these men kidding around? No. No, they are not. Well, maybe a little. See for yourself. The story picks up with a retired racing driver turned driving instructor (Jane) picking up a new client (Cusack). Pretty quickly - specifically when the cops start shooting at him - he discovers that he's a just stooge for the latter's bank heist. From there on it looks a lot like the innocent man with the wig becomes a lot less unwitting an accomplice than he started. As Bette Davis didn't quite say: "Fasten your seatbelts. It's The Punisher." Behind all this fun and frivolity is Anglo-Aussie director Brian Trenchard-Smith, the man behind the very great BMX Bandits. His recent CV is heavier...

So, we've had "Drive," "Drive Angry" and now there's "Drive Hard." Of course, these films aren't at all related except by the fact that they're all about guys behind the wheel, and perhaps that everyone should stop using the word "drive" in their movie titles if the results are going to be this bad. The first trailer for "Drive Hard" has dropped online and we're wondering why John Cusack agreed to star in this, and what amount of money Thomas Jane was paid to endure that wig. The man behind this one is director Brian Trenchard-Smith, whose rather amazing filmography includes "Tyrannosaurus Azteca," "Airforce 2 Down," "DC 9/11: Time of Crisis" and "Leprechaun 4: In Space," so with that in mind, manage your expectations. As for the story, it follows a thief who ropes in a former Formula 1 champion to be his getaway driver. And the rest writes itself. Image Entertainment...

The flavor of bile is unmistakable. There just isn’t anything that tastes quite like it. And you know it when it comes on: The belly rumbles, the esophagus lurches within, and you battle back the slimy liquid that threatens to spew forth from your lips.
It’s a nasty experience. We all hate that sensation so we’re taking measures at Dread Central to help prevent such a situation from occurring.
See, there are horror sequels out there that are so horrifically bad they somehow trigger something in our internal systems... and the belly begins to rumble. We wish you no stomach troubles here, and we certainly wish the taste of bile on no man or woman. So we’re going to provide you with a list of sequels to avoid at all costs because if you check these out, you’ll be searching for the toothbrush in no time!

Oh boy, you’re going to need a lot more than the “luck of the Irish” to make it through Red Clover – maybe some Irish whiskey, Irish coffee, or a whole slew of Irish car bombs? The sillier of a mood you’re in for this Celtic horror film the better, because you’re going to have to make your own fun with this one. Suffering from almost every horror cliché in the book, and filled with distractingly laughable performances, director Drew Daywalt’s Leprechaun revival is a curse of its own, haunting viewers with a legend better left buried.
Karen O’Hara (Courtney Halverson) is out hunting with her grandfather (William Devane) when she stumbles upon a bright red four-leaf clover, which she picks out of curiosity – bad idea. Right after plucking the oddly colored clover, a fawn-like being emerges from the ground, and Karen finds a strange marking on her hand.

Emerging writer-director Zach Lipovsky has a handful of TV movies under his belt, but he's best known for appearing on the reality TV game show On the Lot, where he was one of 16 aspiring filmmakers competing for a development deal at DreamWorks. Lipovsky didn't win that prize, but now he's found his own pot of gold. The Wrap reports Lipovsky has signed with Lionsgate and WWE Studios to helm their Leprechaun reboot. With a background in visual effects, Lipovsky could be a good fit for the project, which will likely blend camp comedy and gory horror elements like the original franchise did. The original Leprechaun centered on a homicidal little man of myth who reigns terror on a young boy and his friends (which included pre-Friends Jennifer Aniston) once they accidentally steal his enchanted gold. The movie became infamous enough to spur a bunch of sequels like Leprechaun 4: In Space...

Warwick Davis has been a part of our lives as movie fans for three decades, starring as Wicket the Ewok in "Return of the Jedi" and later as the title character in "Willow" before starring in the "Leprechaun" movies and in every "Harry Potter" film in the franchise. Quite the career!
The following mini-biography marks a few significant dates in Davis' life, complete with fun facts that you may not have known about the esteemed English thespian.
February 3, 1970: Born to narcissist parents Warren and Harwick Davis in Epsom, Surrey, UK.
April 25, 1977: Sees "Star Wars" for the first time with his older brother, Meriweather. During the show, he allegedly points to the screen and whispers something to Meriweather that would seem to have amazingly prophesied his future: "One day, Meriweather, I'm going to play a murderous leprechaun in a film franchise that will launch the career of a promising young actress named Jennifer Aniston.

NextMovie kicks off Leprechaun Week today! Look for new "Leprechaun"-related content every day this week in the lead-up to St. Paddy's Day. Because it's what Leprechaun would have wanted ...
"I have not come to play with fruit. I just want me magic flute!"
So sayeth the ever-rhyming Irish demon played by Warwick Davis in "Leprechaun in the Hood" (2000) to the lusty cross-dressing Miss Fontaine (Lobo Sebastian). A little later, these two engage in a passionate romp under the sheets during which Miss Fontaine's cries of pain will be mistaken for gasps of orgasmic delight by at least one bewildered passer-by as the Leprechaun claims another victim.
It's astonishingly tasteless, crass and almost (almost) admirably brazen ... which kind of sums up the "Leprechaun" series in its entirety. And that's a pretty impressive entirety — there are six of the damn things in that pot of cinematic gold, after all.

Sooo.. Leprechaun: Origins. It’s Leprechaun, remade by WWE and starring Hornswoggle. In case you don’t know Hornswoggle, he’s the leprechaun professional wrestler.
Like most remakes/reboots today, this Leprechaun will have a darker edge. Crave online spoke to Michael Luisi, president of WWE Studios about the project.
“The tone is going to be a little darker, a little more traditional horror than the Warwick Davis ones that people remember, trying to find a way to please fans of that genre but at the same time this is really being played for scares,” Luisi said.
No definite word on whether Warwick Davis will make a return to the franchise, but Luisi said there may be a cameo. What I really want to know is if Jennifer Aniston will revisit the film.
I am trying to reserve judgment, but I don’t know how this remake can avoid campy elements.

About a year ago, it was announced that Lionsgate teamed with WWE Studios to reboot "Leprechaun," the 1993 horror film that starred Warwick Davis as the evil Leprechaun who goes on a killing rampage in search of his beloved pot of gold. Now in a new interview, Michael Luisi, President of WWE Studios, revealed his plan for the new film, called "Leprechaun: Origins." "The tone is going to be a little darker," he explained. "A little more traditional horror than the Warwick Davis ones that people remember. [We're] trying to find a way to please fans of that genre but, at the same time, this is really being played for scares." WWE star Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl (pictured) is attached to play the title role, and even though the new movie won't be connected to the original films, Luisi would love to find a way to including Davis, who starred in a total of six "Leprechaun" installments,...

[This week's "Retro Active" pick is inspired by Ridley Scott's sci-fi monster prequel (of sorts) Prometheus.]
In space, no one can hear you groan, but here on Earth, the exasperated cries elicited by Leprechaun 4: In Space are inevitable, and inescapable. Few '90s horror franchises more bluntly epitomized the genre's clichéd creative template, as the Leprechaun series followed up its disposable original (most notable for featuring a pre-Friends, original-nosed Jennifer Aniston) with a duplicative sequel and then subsequent installments defined by their central-location gimmicks (Vegas, Space, the Hood—twice!). It's the malevolent Irish creature's journey to the cosmos, however, that's most mind-boggling, as grindhouse icon Brian Trenchard-Smith's direct-to-video work not only rejects logic at every turn, but proves too lazy to even rip off its obvious influences with verve, much less cleverness. Of course, stupidity is almost the end goal of a movie whose very premise seems to be a joke. Yet if everything is intended to be a giant goof,...

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Lionsgate and WWE Studios were teaming up for a reboot of Leprechaun. We now know who will be playing the title character. Replacing Warwick Davis is WWE star Dylan Postl, who is better known as Hornswoggle.
He recently took to his Twitter page to announce the casting, title, and release month: “The #swogglesecret that I’ve been hinting at all week is that in March 2013 I will be starring in Leprechaun:Origins by WWE Studios!!!”
The target release month is still quite a bit away, but we’ll keep an eye out for additional casting announcements over the coming months. At this time, a director and additional actors have not been announced. While this was referred to as Leprechaun: Origins in the Tweet, we wouldn’t be surprised to see “origins” dropped from the title if they are planning this film as...

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, we've got some strange news about one of the more unexpected reboots to be announced in quite a while. Lionsgate and WWE Studios are apparently teaming up for a new take on the cult horror favourite Leprechaun. The original 1993 film starred Warwick Davis as a deranged leprechaun who goes on a killing spree in search of his lucky pot of gold. It also featured Jennifer Aniston in her very first big screen role. The movie built up a following over the years and spawned some of the most ridiculous sequels ever including Leprechaun 4: In Space and Leprechaun in the Hood starring Ice-t. How can they possibly top that? According to Variety, Leprechaun will be the first in a two-film deal between Lionsgate and WWE where they will split the cost of both production and marketing, with Lionsgate handling distribution. They've previously worked...

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, we have news of a Leprechaun reboot happening over at Lionsgate. According to Variety, Lionsgate is teaming up with WWE Studios to produce the film, with plans to release it sometime in 2013.
This is a very early announcement, so at this time there is no writer or director attached. The original film was released in 1993 and spawned multiple direct to video sequels including Leprechaun in the Hood and Leprechaun 4: In Space. WWE Studios is looking to relaunch their film division and this will be the first of multiple projects for the studio. We’ll report back as soon as development of the project moves forward.

Lionsgate has teamed with WWE Studios for a reboot of "Leprechaun," the 1993 horror film that was one of the starring roles for Jennifer Aniston. The original film was developed by Trimark, which went bankrupt and picked up by Lionsgate in 2000. The remake is set for a 2013 release, though there is currently no writer, director or cast attached. The two companies will split producing costs as well as team on marketing strategies. Lionsgate will handle distribution. Warwick Davis appeared in six "Leprechaun" installments as the evil, sadistic Leprechaun who goes on a killing rampage in search of his beloved pot of gold. The last three films were called "Leprechaun 4: In Space," "Leprechaun 5: In the Hood" and "Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood."...

Leprechaun is headed back to the big screen. Variety reports that the 1993 original is aimed for a reboot. Warwick Davis starred in the original six-film horror franchise ( Leprechaun 1 - 3 , Leprechaun 4: In Space , Leprechaun 5: In the Hood and Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood ) as the devious creature of Irish legend. No writer, director or cast have been announced yet, but the plan is to target a 2013 release. The first film, directed by Mark Jones, is also famous for launching the film career of Jennifer Aniston.

You remember the old tag line, courtesy of the classic 1979 sci-fi thriller Alien, “In space, no one can hear you scream”? While that may be true (I’ve never been to space, but I can say with the utmost certainty, I would freak out to deaf ears the entire time), people can most definitely hear you scream when you’re in a movie theater watching a freaky flick set in the infinite galaxy.
With Apollo 18 arriving this weekend, moviegoers will feel as trapped in their theaters as the unfortunate fellows aboard that secret space mission. Of course, it won...

In this new feature on the site, I'll be periodically posting various oddballs trailers from the far reaches of cinema obscurity. So, without any further ado, let's check out some "coming attractions"!
Stunt Rock (1978):
This mind-melting slab of Australian lunacy pairs footage of wild stuntman Grant Page with performances by goofy 70's rockers/magicians Sorcery! Directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith of Turkey Shoot, Dead End Drive-in and Leprechaun 4: In Space fame.
Frankenstein General Hospital (1988):
Oh boy, this looks ridiculous. A forgotten straight-to-video comedy featuring a respectable cast of recognizable character actors including lovable lug Irwin Keyes, Mark Blankfield, Leslie Jordan and even Ben Stein. There's a part of me that wants to check this out, while another part of me screams "What the fuck is wrong with you?!".
Night of the Dribbler (1990):
Jesus Christ, where did this come from?! An absurd high school slasher flick/goofball comedy...

Strap in, cadets, because Junk Food Dinner is about to boldly go...well you get the idea. This week we take a look at 3 horror icons who got blasted into space (or in one case, just showed up there.)
First, we pal around with Pinhead as we take a look at Hellraiser 4: Bloodline - the last of the series to see a theatrical release.
Next, our luck runs out when we match wits with Warwick Davis as the Leprechaun (regular and extra large) in the crazy mess that is Leprechaun 4: In Space, from director Brian Trenchard-Smith.
Finally, we learn that in space, no one can hear you groan, as we review the 10th (!) installment of Friday the 13th - Jason X, from 2001.
All this, plus nerd news / DVD releases / listener feedback / and more!
Direct Download Here.

When Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens this weekend, it will continue one of the most fascinating cinematic trends of the last few years: the Rise of the Big-Budget Fourquel. Third sequels didn’t use to exist outside of low-budget horror cash-cows and Z-grade monster franchises. Trilogies simply felt more dignified, whether you were designing an action-adventure saga (Back to the Future, Star Wars) or a soul-searing work of cinematic artistry (The Godfather, the Apu series.) But we live in undignified times. As Roger Ebert recently pointed out in Newsweek, 2011 features the highest number of fourquels ever: Besides Pirates,...

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, lads and lassies! Time to dust off your green garb and prep your palette for jade-tinted guzzling so you can properly rep the 0.064% of your genetics that lay claim to Irish heritage.
Since we’re of the mind that any proper pre-game should include the screening of a flick or two, we’ve compiled some of our favorite Emerald Isle-themed movies. And – as with today’s holiday – you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy ‘em.
Check out our list past the jump!
“The Commitments” (1991)
This tale of a group of misfit musicians in Dublin who form a soul band manages loads of heartwarming laughs sans any cheesiness. The then-unknown actors were chosen for their musical talents, but many have gone on to achieve substantial fame – most notably, Colm Meaney (“Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Con Air,” “Layer Cake”) and Glen Hansard (vocalist/guitarist...

It sounds like buddy cop films could be making a comeback in Hollywood, thanks in part to both Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's The Other Guys and Kevin Smith's Cop Out. We've got news this week of a potentially R-rated action-comedy being shopped around Hollywood that has a "Lethal Weapon flavour" to it, and it has two pretty big stars attached in Ryan Reynolds and Bradley Cooper. Both are known for their comedic performances but have also starred in a handful of action-oriented tentpoles, but do they have what it takes to be the next Riggs and Murtaugh? The movie will be based on a script written by Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air, The Longest Yard) that was originally titled Blowback. At the time, it was being developed as a vehicle for Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, but he is no longer involved. It will be produced by Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious,...

Bluewater Comics has partnered with Lionsgate to developing and release a line of comic books based on the cult/ horror films Leprechaun and Warlock. Bluewater has recently made noise with their celebrity-titled series such as Vincent Price Presents for horror fans and 2009’s promised William Shatner Presents which will adapt his non-Star Trek novels.
“Working with Lionsgate on this end is like coming back full circle for me. I worked on the marketing for Leprechaun 4: In Space,” Bluewater publisher Darren G. Davis said in a press release. “I loved this little character and have always wanted to do something with him. As for Warlock, this was another cult film that I enjoyed, so having this opportunity to partner with Lionsgate again is going to great”.
The Warlock comic series is described as, “The Warlock is on a mission to destroy a book that contains a spell which imprisoned six other Warlocks.

Bluewater Comics has announced that it has struck a deal with Lionsgate to produce two new series based on franchises very familiar to horror fans: Warlock and Leprechaun. These ’90s genre favorites will be heading to comic shops across the country in 2009 with all-new tales, following the success of Bluewater’s most recent foray into horror, Vincent Price Presents.
Bluewater publisher Darren G. Davis is excited about adapting these movie series, one of which he was previously linked to. “Collaborating with Lionsgate on this end is like coming back full circle for me,” he says. “I worked on the marketing for Leprechaun 4: In Space.
