Before I write this review, let me tell you some things about me.
1) My favorite movies usually include a lot of explosions, automatic weapons, fast cars and some girl trying to kill the main character with her go-go boots.
2) I watch football every week. I even record the games so I can watch them during the off-season.
3) The only reason I go to the mall is to get my Craftsman Tools from Sears.
4) I've never owned a pink shirt in my life...not even during the "Miami Vice" days.
5) I eat meat for almost every single meal.
I only tell you these things to protect my manhood, because what I'm about to say could ruin it forever:
There are times that I'll watch a "Chick Flick" with my wife. There are even times that I'll watch one without my wife. (GASP!)
"Say Anything" is one of those "Chick Flicks" that I'll watch on my own and not feel like my estrogen level is starting to raise.
It may have to do with a kickboxing John Cusack in this movie. It may have to do Ione Skye. It may have to do with Jeremy Piven and the rest of the "Gas N Sip guys" giving their philosophy of girls. It may have to do with the fact that it's just not the typical "He loves her, she loves him, they date and a Top 40 hit plays in the background" movie.
Actually, I think it's a combination of all that, but also there's a certain amount of testosterone involved that makes me feel okay watching this movie without a female in the room. It's a shame that they don't make movies like this anymore. (I sound like my father)
There is one more confession I guess I should make. I cry every time I see John's character Lloyd holding a boom box playing "In Your Eyes" above his head. I know it's not a manly thing to do, but I feel better saying it.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have something in my eye...
