Trouble Is My Business with Brittney Powell. Co-written by actor/voice actor Tom Konkle, who also directed, and Xena: Warrior Princess actress Brittney Powell, Trouble Is My Business is a humorous homage to film noirs of the 1940s and 1950s, among them John Huston's The Maltese Falcon and Orson Welles' Touch of Evil. Konkle stars in the sort of role that back in the '40s and '50s belonged to the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, Dick Powell, and Alan Ladd. As the femme fatale, Brittney Powell is supposed to evoke memories of Jane Greer, Lizabeth Scott, Lauren Bacall, and Claire Trevor. 'Trouble Is My Business': Humorous film noir homage evokes memories of 'The Maltese Falcon' & 'Touch of Evil' A crunchy, witty, and often just plain funny mash-up of classic noir tropes, from hard-boiled private dicks to the easy-on-the-eyes femme fatales – in addition to dialogue worthy of Dashiell Hammett and, occasionally...

Rolling Stone's Peter Travers pays tribute to the late, great playwright/actor Sam Shepard: "It was never about him. It was always about the work." Everett Collection
Sam Shepard famously hated endings. As a playwright, he felt "the temptation towards resolution, towards wrapping up the package, seems to me a terrible trap."
He got that right. So Shepard leaves us to deal with his ending, a death at 73 at his home in Kentucky, surrounded by family. Als, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, was the culprit. The obits pay...

At the moment, in Korea, there aren’t many stars that shine brighter or hotter than Gang Dong-won. The leading man of more than 20 features creates frenzies everywhere he goes, as proven by his appearance to receive the Star Asia award at the New York Asian Film Festival. Gang spoke with me about his featured film, Vanishing Time, and his upcoming films, director Kim Jee-woon’s Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade and director Jang Joon-hwan’s 1987. The Lady Miz Diva: Vanishing Time is a very interesting film with fairytale-like qualities. What was your sense of the projects when you first read the script? Gang Dong-won: The first time I read the script, I was making a movie called A Violent Prosecutor. When...

Together, writer/director Joseph Cedar and lead actor Richard Gere craft a singularly memorable character in Norman Oppenheimer, a lonely New York “businessman” with loose connections and an insatiable drive for success. Cedar builds his film Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer as a modern adaptation of the “Court Jew” archetype, in which a Jewish figure befriends a man of power, only to be betrayed in the end.
It’s not really a spoiler if it’s all in the title. There’s to be only sadness at the end of this funny, bittersweet story. Norman sports white Apple headphones hanging from his ears as he makes phone call after phone call, bending the truths of his friendships and influences to whoever will listen. He’s got a nephew (Michael Sheen) who appeases him and a slew of Jewish men who wield power and...

Bela Lugosi fan alert! This Monogram horror opus is yet another narrative-challenged fumble of unmotivated, incomprehensible characters… but Bela’s great in it, in a central role. He’s a sympathetic, non- maniac this time, if you don’t count his tendency to go into trances and smother random houseguests. Savant’s review has the lowdown on the interesting cast; Tom Weaver’s commentary has the authoritative lowdown on whole show.

The crass spirit of 1980s Cannon Films is paid knowing homage by faithful step-child Millennium Films in Criminal, a staggeringly far-fetched carnival of action from which a beaten, battered and rebrained Kevin Costner emerges very much bloodied but unbowed. The leading man aside, a fine cast is thoroughly wasted in a tale that centers on old-fashioned Cold War-style conflict rather than the sort of terrorist drama that's more pertinent today. The high-endish Expendables-worthy names and nearly constant violence will assure a measure of domestic business for Lionsgate, even if considerably more revenue will flow

They say that clothes make the man. They also make the man in the movie and, sometimes, even make the movie itself live on in the annals of classic filmdom. With that in mind, here is a list (in no particular order) of ten gents and the characters they played who changed our sartorial habits forever.
1. Michael Douglas/Gordon Gecko—Wall Street
Arguably the movie that set the style for second half of the 1980s, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street featured Michael Douglas’ Oscar-winning turn as corporate raider Gordon Gecko, whose ruthlessness in the boardroom was only matched by his sense of style. Douglas is all clean lines in his pinstripe suits, suspenders and slicked-back hair, creating an iconic look that screamed “power” and “go fuck yourself” simultaneously.

Ansel Elgort has nothing but brotherly love for Shailene Woodley! The leading man gets candid about his "Fault In Our Stars" and "Divergent" costar in the April issue of Seventeen magazine, where he reveals whether he thinks girls and guys can be "just friends." The actor has played Shailene's love interest and brother in the films, so which role does he identify their relationship with? Turns out the two are nothing but close pals! "If a woman is really pretty, it's kind of hard. I'm not going to lie. Actually, that's not true," he tells the mag. "Me and Shailene have a really platonic relationship. I've never once wanted her sexually, which is nice. But for me, if a person is someone I'm attracted to, and she's my best friend, hopefully we're dating." And any lady who is lucky enough to be dating the 21-year-old actor, can definitely expect to be spoiled.

54 years ago, ABC Television, the ITV franchise holder for the Midlands and North of England, embarked on a new drama series that stood a good chance of success. The leading man was Ian Hendry, who played David Keel, a Gp avenging the death of his wife; the producer was Sydney Newman, the creator of the acclaimed Armchair Theatre. The first episode was scripted by Brian Clemens, a young writer who had previously worked for the Danziger brothers, the B-film producers who based their masterpieces around stock footage and borrowed props. Against not inconsiderable odds, Clemens’ scripts often managed to make a Danzigers production entertaining. The Avengers would provide a higher profile showcase for his talents.

The Doctor has had a variety of friends, of all shapes and species, joining him in his adventures across time and space but the idea of an archetypal companion still exists. They are someone from the present day, someone who is young and someone who is a woman. Though it must be said that the majority of the Tardis’ tenants fit this bill, many don’t. Several are from different periods of history, some aren’t particularly young and, yes, some of them aren’t even women.
When Doctor Who returns with The Magician’s Apprentice later this year it’s thought the Doctor might gain a new companion. Rather than having another young woman from the 21st century (after all, Clara’s still around), the new companion could well be male. If so, it’s a move that would bring a new dynamic to the Tardis team. The leading man...

The First Stage: Holding Your Breath
So many miracles had to happen for us to pull off this show, because it really wasn’t something there was a template for. We knew that these characters, Gortimer and Mel and Ranger, were cut from a different cloth than a lot of the characters on kids TV right now. And it was scary because we couldn’t have a show without believable actors. But I had no idea if anybody was even out there who could pull it off. So I held my breath and we started the casting process.

Say what you will about Ben Affleck and his hitherto patchy career – I’m a fan, regardless. You cannot help but admire an actor who goes unabashedly and unapologetically full throttle on every role he takes – even when it is the lead in Gigli. I’m also a big fan of David Fincher, and of quality drama, so it’s safe to say my anticipation level for Gone Girl is reaching fever pitch. The film is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Gillian Flynn, and interestingly, Flynn herself adapted the screenplay. Co-starring Rosamund Pike (The World’s End), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Tyler Perry (Star Trek), it tells the story of a man thrust into the centre of an intense media circus after the disappearance of his wife places him under suspicion for her murder.

Why Watch? Almost a decade ago, Rian Johnson turned eyebrows with Brick by passionately sticking to noir conventions while subverting them just enough to breathe fresh life into a musty genre. To be fair to that genre, it’s one that will eternally and repeatedly enjoy new resurgences, potentially along the same tidal lines as the western, and Brick hit just at the right moment with all the right ingredients. This short film from Zach Wechter follows that same formula, and through doing so, reminds us that its the familiarity of the story beats that keeps entries in this seedy world so satisfying. Like Johnson’s film, Straight Down Low (announcing its genre right there in the title) asks a cast of high school students to get to the bottom of a gangland murder, and in not attempting to reinvent the wheel, he instead conducts a master class in cool. In reviews, podcasts and tweets, it has become common in recent years for me to lament the influx of British and Australian actors masquerading as Americans, all perpetrating the same flat, generic accents as if Americans all come from the same state, which is no state at all, but rather some nether-region dialect coaches call Mid-Atlantic or something. I take semi-feigned umbrage at this infiltration and I am, indeed, a bit irked that a good 75 percent of the Brits and Aussies are trapped by exhaustively studied, but ultimately affectless accent work that leads them to give robotic performances they'd never tolerate from themselves in their native tongues. Yes, I get my hackles up, but I know it isn't actually important. The rise in work for Aussie and British actors is largely linked to the expanding TV universe, and even if this most recent upfronts season saw an encouraging uptick in...

Who could have guessed that, when 21 Jump Street hit theaters a couple of years ago, the comic highlight would be Channing Tatum? The leading man was, at the time, Hollywood's next big thing, but no one knew exactly what kind of performer we had on our hands. Now, with a couple of years to look back, and with 22 Jump Street reaching theaters, we realize we've had an ace comedic performer in our midst. Hollywood is filled with actors who definitely have a funny bone, but just no opportunity to show it. Sometimes it's typecasting. Sometimes it's the very fact that comedy is very hard. Sometimes it's the overwhelming, deadly-serious genre pictures coming out of the industry every week. Whatever the case, here are a dozen actors that we thought could benefit from a lead comedic role, something silly and lightweight to diversify their careers and show their fans that sometimes,...

Robert Pattinson is looking a little blue. That's because his beautiful face is dirtied up with blue, gray and purplish hues (of paint or makeup, Tbd) on the cover of French magazine Première. The 27-year-old hunk looks less than thrilled in the shot (which is still sexy because of its flawless subject). Perhaps it has something to do with the fact he appears to be wearing lipstick (or is that smeared blood?!) and a tight shirt checkered with floral patterns. It's only fitting that R.Pattz landed the film mag's special Cannes issue. The leading man's next big picture Maps to the Stars is premiering at the acclaimed film festival, which kicks off May 14. Back in 2007, Zack Snyder's "300" came out and pretty much blew everyone's minds.
Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, just like 2005's similarly stylized "Sin City," the film told the story of the ancient Spartans, led by Gerard Butler's King Leonidas, who, with an army of just 300, went up against the considerable military might of the golden god king Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). The film was gorgeous and gory -- a blood-splattered living comic book that favored balls-to-the-walls coolness over characterization or plot cohesiveness.
Now, a cool seven years later, a sequel has arisen in the form of "300: Rise of an Empire," based again on a Frank Miller comic book, although one that, at the time of this writing, has gone unpublished. This time, the movie centers on Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton), who led the Athenian army against a similar (but much more water-logged) battle against Xerxes (again...

When it comes to bonding with Sandra Bullock's 3-year-old son, Louis, George Clooney does it with a game of hoops. "Louis and I played basketball together," Clooney, 52, told People at Tuesday's New York premiere of the space drama Gravity. "There was [director] Alfonso [Cuarón] and Rande Gerber, and Louis would gravitate towards me and the guys and hang with us." The leading man added, kiddingly: "It was fun, but I wish Sandy would stop telling the story, because it's totally ruining my reputation!" Although Clooney isn't called "Uncle George" or any other nicknames, Clooney says he enjoys spending time with the...

Giant robots save us. It's just a matter of them coming from another planet, or if we make them right here on Earth. Pacific Rim gives us Jaegesr vs. Kaiju. Transformers (2007) gives us Autobots vs. Decepticons. Sure, Pacific Rim has the advantage of not being based on childhood toys, but that also means it might be a tougher sell at the box office. Luckily, there is one surefire way to figure out which one matters more, it's time for another Film Face-off, with Pacific Rim vs. Transformers. The Leading Man Transformers Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf) is an awkward teenager who wants to be with a girl who is out of his league. It turns out he's the descendant of an Arctic explorer who discovered the AllSpark (it's superpowerful...

Before Epic Meal Time took off, Harley Morenstein was a humble substitute teacher. Now, his Internet fame has allowed him to try his hand at stand-up comedy. The leading man of YouTube's #1 cooking show is one of the 12 featured comedians on Ari Shaffir's This Is Not Happening, a storytelling series produced by Comedy Central's CCStudios wing. The premise of This Is Not Happening is a simple one: Shaffir provides a topic, and twelve comedians (Shaffir included) weave a personal tale based off of that topic. The first topic is "One Crazy Night", and Morenstein engagingly recounts one of the sloppiest evenings he's had since Emt hit it big. Morenstein portrays an indestructible version of himself on his show, so it's fascinating to hear him talk about a time when the Sauce Boss acted like a mere mortal. Also, I had no idea that a high YouTube view count...

Man of Steel's Metacritic score of 55 is a perfect indication of the mixed reviews that have greeted the movie. Writing for the A.V. Club, Ignatiy Vishnevetsky panned director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan's reboot, while Drew McWeeny nearly broke into nostalgia-induced tears over at HitFix, calling it “the Superman movie [he’s] waited [his] whole life to see.” Yet, all the critics unanimously agreed that Henry Cavill is handsome, like, “impossibly,” "cartoonishly” handsome — “so ripped that he’s nearly shredded.” The leading man damn well looks like Superman, but can he play him? Here’s what the critics thought: "Cavill — whose performance involves more posing than acting — is alternately presented as an alien messiah, a superweapon, and an American flag flapping in the wind; the one thing he never gets to be is a character." —A.V. Club "British actor Henry Cavill gives a strong, likable, occasionally moving performance in the title role,...

You know Michael Keaton's crime-fighting vigilante days might be over when he goes from "Batman" to "Birdman."
The former Caped Crusader will be joining Emma Stone, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis in "Birdman," the new dark comedy from writer-director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, according to Heat Vision.
"Comedy," whether it's dark or otherwise, may not be the genre that immediately springs to mind when it comes to the man who brought us such brutal examinations of the human condition as "21 Grams" (which also starred Watts) and "Babel." However, Innaritu's new project sounds like it will indeed be showcasing his lighter (-ish) side.
"Birdman" sounds like a movie for theatre people as it follows a washed-up former comic book hero actor (Keaton in a bit of meta-casting) and his attempt to win back his former glory by mounting a stage production of a Raymond Carver short story. As with most movies...

The leading man has been found for Marvel Studios' big budget, live action Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and it's Chris Pratt. He can currently be seen on-screen as one of the Navy SEALs that took down Osama bin Laden in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty.
Pratt won the role over what Deadline reports was a sizeable number of other contenders including another Zero Dark Thirty actor, Joel Edgerton; Cloud Atlas' Jim Sturgess; Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables); and Jack Huston from HBO's Boardwalk Empire.
By choosing Pratt as their intergalactic leading man, Marvel is making a sizeable bet that his presence will be enough to give a earthbound perspective to the cosmic action. Since the remainder of the Guardians team are all aliens, Pratt will have to ground the movie for the average joe to buy into a talking tree (Groot) and gun-toting raccoon (Rocket Raccoon).

★★★☆☆ When British Army officer Pat Reid approached the bleached white foundations of Colditz Castle, he was probably not speculating which actor would later portray him in an autobiographical account of his infamous prison escape. Whoever it was, they had to almost parody the quintessence of Britishness, be partial to an over waxed quiff, and above everything, hate the ruddy Jerries. The leading man turned out to be one of Britain's most prolific filmic exports, John Mills (who had already played Scott of the Antarctic), who starred as Reid in Guy Hamilton's 1955 historical adaptation, The Colditz Story.

According to World Without End author Ken Follett, actor Tom Weston-Jones brings an air of innocence to the character Merthin, but he also adds an extra dash of handsome. After all, who wants to look at bad teeth and bad skin for eight hours? The leading man, himself, also shares insights about the character, and he has a fool-proof plan for keeping cool at a hot event.
The first two-hour segment of the epic World Without End mini-series premieres this Wednesday, October 17th. There are plenty of opportunities to catch all the drama with airings at 8pm, 10pm and 12am Et, so don't miss a minute of the medieval drama.

This violent, intense and brilliant bulletfest from Indonesia puts western action movies to shame
It was in a delicate, almost feathery mood that I sat down to watch this film: apparently set in Indonesia, probably an evanescent arthouse piece, and called, The Rain, was it … ? Perhaps it would soothe my working London commuter's cares like a cup of elusively scented herbal tea. Perhaps there would be unhurried shots of treetops languidly disturbed by evening breezes, of skies on which mysterious cloudshapes would be inscribed, lakes whose surfaces would be disturbed by whorls from the titular rainfall. In the evening, perhaps there would be enigmatic silences between gentle characters accompanied by the plinkety-plunkety-plink of wind-chimes and later a full and plangent moon.
Actually, no. The Raid is a skull-splinteringly violent, uncompromisingly intense and simply brilliant martial arts action movie in a nightmarish and claustrophobic setting. It has something of Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs...

When Spl came out in 2005, it was like a breath of fresh air in a decade full of derivative, rehashed Hong Kong movies. (I am looking at you Ronald Cheng) Save for the Infernal Affairs Trilogy, there were not many Hong Kong movies of note that weren’t over-the-top slapsticks or action movie that looked cut from the same cookie cutter. It was a far cry from the Tsui Hark, John Woo glory years of Hong Kong movies. In the Asian movie scene, Japanese and Korean movies began creeping up on the Hong Kong market share, even among the Chinese speaking audiences.
Spl changed all that. Not singlehandedly, in-a-blink-of-the-eye type of miracle. But it reminded movie goers of the best in Hong Kong movies, tension between triads and police, balls-to-the-wall action sequences, brilliant fight choreography and a charismatic action hero (Donnie Yen) that you want to cheer on.
