I 'heard about the Morgans' and I have some new ideas for Hugh Grant...

19 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

As an unashamed rom-com fan, I ignored the reviews and went to see Did You Hear About the Morgans? (horrible title!) on Friday – and let’s just say I had my fill of watered-down City Slickers jokes within the first half hour. But moving on to the positives -- for starters, Elisabeth Moss (our beloved Peggy from Mad Men) showed off a sleek modern style and a deliciously bitchy attitude as the assistant to Sarah Jessica Parker's annoying character. And also, Hugh Grant was pretty lovable and had a few good lines that had me laughing two or three times. »

A Conversation with Danielle Harris

17 October 2009 2:29 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Danielle Harris, star of four films in the Halloween franchise, as well as pictures like The Last Boyscout, City Slickers, Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead, and the television series Roseanne was kind enough to sit down with me at the 2009 Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida to talk about her career. The interview was filmed live, but due to surrounding noise I have transcribed the conversation below.

Ja/Fangoria: First of all, can I say how nervous I am that we are making a film with John Landis sitting right over there?

Danielle Harris: (laughs)

Ja: We're here at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida, and how has it been going for you so far?

Dh: It's been good! It's been really busy.

Ja: Have you met any creeps so far?

Dh: Not really at this show, only a handful. (laughs)

Ja: You actually lived here in Florida, »

New Trailer: Dwayne Johnson in ‘The Tooth Fairy’

5 October 2009 8:15 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has had quite an interesting career in a pretty short amount of time. He’s covered just about all of the prerequisites that his Action Movie forefathers set for him: Sci-Fi franchise, art-house picture, buddy movie, and family film. Those accolades took stars like Schwartzenegger and Stallone 15 years to accomplish, and Johnson has managed to do them in 5. He’s now coming off of the success of Race to Witch Mountain and The Game Plan for another family-friendly film in The Tooth Fairy.

In the film, Johnson plays tough guy Derek Thompson, known to his friends as “The Tooth Fairy” due to his aggressive sportsmanship on the hockey rink. Thompson is kind of an S.O.B. to fans, friends, and even his kid, until things get turned around and he is sentenced to serve as an actual tooth fairy.

Weezer fans, rejoice. On October 27, the geek-rock gods will return with their seventh studio album, a yet-untitled affair that sees the band partying hard and getting parenthetical.

That's because, following in the grand grammatical style of classics like Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Weezer have announced that the first single from the album is called "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To," and it's shipping to radio August 25.

That's all according to a series of posts on Weezer.com, and the band promises that more information about the new album — title, track list, color, whether Rivers Cuomo will look like Bruno Kirby in »

Ferrell and Dobkin Bail in Neighborhood Watch… Nothing to See Here

3 August 2009 11:45 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The day has finally arrived. We got a scoop from the Orlando Sentinel. Will Ferrell and David Dobkin, director of Wedding Crashers and the ill-fated Fred Claus, have bailed on the no-longer-starring-Will-Ferrell vehicle Neighborhood Watch. The film was ditched by these Hollywood comedy darlings, because Dobkin's most recent script revisions couldn't get past the apparently schizophrenic deciders over at Fox. Meh, whatever. Neighborhood Watch sounds like a sloppy combination of City Slickers, The Burbs, Hot Fuzz, and that wierd sewer monster Scully-and-Mulder-pose-as-a-Stepford-couple episode of "X Files", anyway. We'll see how and if this puppy turns out. We'll see. Is that you looking at me through my curtains, or what? »

20 Years of Summer Movies, A Love/Hate Relationship

7 May 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

With the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 2009 summer movie season has begun. A cursory glance at the upcoming slate of summer releases looks pretty weak this year, but I’m not here to look ahead. Instead, I noticed that we’ve reached the twenty-year anniversary of the “true” summer movie age. Sure, Jaws and Star Wars were the godfathers of the movement, and the close-following summers since that time often saw two or three big releases looking to cash in on the popcorn-munching crowd, but it was 1989 when the summer movie calendar started to become bloated. The large number of crowd-pleasing titles (and bevy of sequels) included the following: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, Ghostbusters II, License to Kill, Star Trek V, Lethal Weapon 2, The Abyss, Honey I Shrunk the Kids and, to a lesser extent, The Karate Kid: Part III. So on the Platinum Anniversary of the summer flick phenomenon, »

Dead Alive: Bringing Popular Characters Back to Life in Sequels

16 April 2009 7:59 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Fans of the gleefully excessive Jason Statham action film "Crank" know that it concluded with an impressively ballsy ending: Statham's Chev Chelios gets his revenge but -- Spoiler Alert! -- falls out of a helicopter in the process. In "Crank"'s final shot, he falls into a car, bounces on to the pavement, twitches and... dies.

It was certainly a surprise -- a pleasant surprise, but a surprise nonetheless -- when the IFC.com staff first got word of a sequel, this week's "Crank: High Voltage." Statham was pretty clearly not alive at the end of that first movie, but, as the sequel's poster puts it: "He Was Dead... But He Got Better."

Chelios is not the first. Hollywood has a long history of bringing back popular dead characters in sequels. Here's a look at five commonly used techniques:

Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal Singing in Damn Yankees

27 February 2009 5:58 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Haven't we had enough remake news this week already?! New Line Cinema has greenlit a remake of Damn Yankees, the sports-themed musical that first hit Broadway in 1955 and movie theaters later in 1958. Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal are both set to star in this contemporary version, with Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, the writers behind A League of Their Own and City Slickers, currently working the script, as well as Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the duo behind Hairspray, both producing. With an impressive line-up like that, I don't think we have anything to complain about, even if it is yet another remake. The original Damn Yankees was a modern retelling of the Faust legend set during the 1950s, where a happily married middle-aged man decides to make a "Faustian bargain" with the devil in order to help out his team, the New York Yankees. Carrey and Gyllenhaal Team for Damn Yankees

26 February 2009 11:05 PM, PST | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal have signed on to star in Damn Yankees, a contemporized film transfer of the classic musical that New Line Cinema is developing. Damn Yankees, which bowed on Broadway in 1955 and won seven Tony Awards, focuses on Joe Boyd, a happily married middle-aged man whose devotion to a hapless pro baseball team prompts him to make a Faustian bargain with the devil to help the team. He's transformed into slugger Joe Hardy, in exchange for Boyd's soul. Boyd can break the deal, but the deadline occurs during the World Series. For good measure, the devil engages Lola, a gorgeous lost soul, to seduce the slugger and seal his fate. According to the trades, the plan is for Carrey to play the devil, and Gyllenhaal to play Boyd. It will be the first musical for each. The film is being produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, »
