Tagline: "The New Civil War Has Begun." Directors: Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Writers: Nick Damici and Graham Reznick Cast: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow and Angelic Zambrana. Bushwick is an action thriller, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Starring former pro-wrestler Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect, 2012), the film tries to answer the question: what if Texas seceded from the United States? Naturally, they would attack Bushwick! a suburb of Brooklyn. Writers Nick Damici (Stakeland II) and Graham Reznick have offered a modern retelling of the Grimm Brothers' Little Red Riding Hood, as Lucy (Snow) attempts to get to Granny's house. The path is littered with gunfire as the big bad wolf gets in the way. As well, much of the film is shot via long takes, with a steadicam. This shooting technique puts the viewer right in close with the characters. Meanwhile, there is a...

Hollywood keeps trying to make dark fairy tales happen (Red Riding Hood/Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), but after The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty, it might be time to give up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for innocence lost. Who doesn’t love a good Christmas horror movie that transforms joy into fear? Granted, this adaptation of Sleeping Beauty is based on “Little Brier-Rose” by the Brothers Grimm, so deviousness is expected – but not to the degree Pearry Teo delivers. Disney’s whimsy long fades once Teo exposes the true horrors of a long-slumbering girl, yet this genre attempt struggles to find sinister definition, and might be droll enough to lull even the titular Beauty back to sleep.
Teo’s film opens on a desert landscape, as Thomas (Ethan Peck) walks towards a bed curtained by wavy sheets. A young woman lays dead asleep, who Thomas approaches,...

If there’s one director whose films I will watch without hesitation or question, it’s Pearry Teo. In fact his filmic career is actually one that is key to mine. His second film, the 2009 fear flick Necromentia (which I still think out-Hellraiser’d Hellraiser itself), was one of the first films I ever reviewed professionally; and I’ve reviewed each and every one of his films since. Why? Because of the impact his twisted vision in Necromentia had on me and because no matter the story, no matter the budget, Teo always finds something interesting, admittedly often dark, to do with the subject matter.

Today in 2002, the first Broadway revival of Into the Woods opened at the Broadhurst Theatre, where it ran for 279 performances. Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical Joanna Gleason, in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm.

Two of Hollywood’s most sought after writers at the moment are already setting up their post Tron, Lost projects. Writers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (Lost and Tron: Legacy) have sold a new TV project to ABC, keeping themselves within the Disney family, entitled Once Upon a Time.
The show centers on a female protagonist with a mysterious background in a small, present-day Maine town. The series will be a modern day take on various fairy tales, while including elements of sci-fi, mystery and fantasy. ABC at one time was going to adapt the graphic novel Fables – a very unique take on classic fairy tales like Snow White, Red Riding Hood, etc - but struggled to get that going, so this must be the safe way they are going to bring in a modern fairy tale concept to the small screen.

Halloween is a good excuse for kids to dress up and beg for candy and for adults to stretch the outer reaches of their imaginations for Halloween party show-stoppers. In the celebrity world, it's kicked up several notches, as not only do famous folks have even more insane ideas, but they also have the funds to execute them and the forums in which to show them off.
(Click here for more celebrity Halloween costumes, including Kim Kardashian, Heidi Klum, Liv Tyler and Ice-t!)
This year's batch of celebrity Halloween costumes had some great highs and lows, but they were all pretty impressive. Rapper and "Law and Order" star Ice-t hit the red carpet dressed as a sort of post-modern Dr. Frankenstein, and wife Coco was just behind him in one of the most revealing sexy nurse costumes ever constructed (it honestly violated the laws of physics, space and time). Halloween ain’t just for kids anymore. Celebs stepped out over the weekend in outfits that were equal parts scary and sexy. Kim Kardashian strutted her stuff as a Bavarian looking Red Riding Hood. Did she pick it up at Oktoberfest along with her dirndl? Coco and her Great Pumpkins hit the town as a (plastic surgeon’s?) nurse, and Snooki rocked it as…Queen of the Pickles? Okay, we’ll be honest: we don’t know what a lot of these outfits are supposed to be. But that’s the magic of Halloween! We don’t have to! It’s the one night of the year where it’s not slutty, it’s a costume! Tights, lots of skin, and body glitter: it ain’t just for skanks anymore. Check out the gallery below to see the best Halloween hotness of 2010! [Photo: WENN Images] 15. Angel and Annalynne McCord 14. Ciara 13. Brooke Burke 12. Kim Porter...

Felicia Day has gone from battling vampires on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to their hairier foes on Syfy's "Red: Werewolf Hunter."
The Syfy original movie that premieres Saturday (Oct. 30) in time to warm up fans for Halloween centers on Virginia Sullivan, aka Red, who comes from a long line of werewolf hunters beginning with the legendary Red Riding Hood.
"I've left my family to sort of find myself outside of the obligation of werewolf hunting," Day tells the press. "And I'm bringing my fiancee [Nathan played by Kavan Smith] back to introduce to my family hoping that I will be able to get permission to tell him this secret part of my life. He gets bitten and it's sort of a struggle to try to save everything I want would love in the movie."
Although she could see how some would find similarities between Red and her "Buffy" character Vi, Day thinks the stories diverge.

Earlier this week, SciFi Mafia had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Felicia Day (The Guild, Eureka), star of SyFy’s Red: Werewolf Hunter premiering tonight. Red is part of SyFy’s series of modernized fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast and Hansel and Gretel and tonight’s installment is just what we need to celebrate Halloween.
Day stars in Red: Werewolf Hunter along with Kavan Smith (Stargate: Extinction, Eureka) and Stephen McHattie (Immortals, Happy Town). Day portrays Virginia Sullivan, “a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood [who] brings her fiancé home to meet her family and tell him about the family business – they are werewolf hunters.”
Just how does Red modernize the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood? Day tells us how we go from the fairy tale of a victim of a wolf attack to perpetrating slayage on werewolves.

A flurry of new release dates were announced today, including such high profile titles as Conan 3D, The Bourne Legacy, The Dark Tower and 21 Jump Street. Conan 3D will be unsheathed on Aug. 19, 2011, the same date as two other movies sporting the 3D illusion, the Fright Night remake and Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World. Conan 3D is essentially a remake of Conan the Barbarian from 1982 and features Jason Momoa (Baywatch, Stargate: Atlantis) as Conan and Stephen Lang (Avatar) as the villain. It's being directed by Marcus Nispel, who covered similar territory in Pathfinder but is better known for horror remakes The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th (2009). Redoing a 1980s adventure in 3D recalls Clash of the Titans (2010) from earlier this year, which racked up $163.2 million. The original Clash of the Titans and Conan the Barbarian had comparable popularity back in the day. Distributor Lionsgate...

Dakota Fanning (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) will star in the film adaptation of the young adult novel "If I Stay" for Summit Entertainment. The book is about a teen cellist who is in a coma after a car accident with her family. Her spirit is hovering above her body and she must decide if she wants to fight to live or just give up and die, considering how her death would affect her surviving family members, her friends and her boyfriend. The novel is described as a non-depressing movie about death.
Catherine Hardwick (Twilight) was originally supposed to direct If I Stay but dropped out to concentrate on Red Riding Hood. Heitor Dhalia takes over helming responsibilities. Whip It scribe Shauna Cross adapted the book into a screenplay. Denise Di Novi (Ramona and Beezus, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) is producing.

Tony Stark's sticking to the first weekend of the summer with his third solo adventure, but his iron will be cooled by a longer wait. Distributor Walt Disney Pictures announced today that Iron Man 3 will launch May 3, 2013. The first official release of Summer 2013, Iron Man 3, will arrive three years after its predecessor, though only two years separated Iron Man 2 from the first Iron Man. That pattern is similar to the first three Spider-Man movies. However, Tony Stark will be on screen a year earlier as part of the ensemble of The Avengers, which is scheduled for May 4, 2012, and there's a good chance the character will have cameos in the other Marvel Comics adaptations leading up to that release (Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger) as he did in The Incredible Hulk. The first Iron Man kicked off Summer 2008 with a rousing $98.6 million and went on to earn $318.4 million by the end of its run,...

Molina’s Ferozz (aka “Wild Riding Hood”) is a film by Cuban director and film professor Jorge Molina, a director with whom I’m not at all familiar but after seeing this work would like to know more about. It’s a truly grotesque film; a pantomime of wild overacting, unsettling simulated sex, and an engaging mix of bizarre symbolism, and creative picture making. Set in and around the Cuban jungle it tells the story of a family of eccentrics and inbreds, headed up by the cruel, matriarchal land owner Ms. Zulma. Zulma is grandmother to the quiet, red hooded Miranda, mother to the alcoholic rapist Lucio and mother-in-law to Miranda’s own caring mother Dolores. Does the world need a new version of Snow White? Has that particular well of dwarves, princes, witches and apples not run dry?
Apparently not, for screenwriter Evan Daugherty, director Rupert Sanders and producer Joe Roth are doing the rounds in Hollywood, touting their new version of the story and looking for a finance deal. The script is currently titled “Snow White and the Huntsman” and although apparently the traditional elements of the story are still there, the Huntsman (who is supposed to take Snow White into the woods and kills her but instead releases her) will be a more prominent role, acting as a mentor and teacher (though not a love interest).
After the staggering, $1bn-surpassing success of Alice in Wonderland, apparently studios are scrambling for well-recognised stories in the public domain that they can latch onto. Disney, who already have their own Snow White project (Snow White and the Seven) in development,...

The massive success of Tim Burton's darker version of Alice in Wonderland, Hollywood studios are all rushing to make scary versions of classic fairy tales including Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty and The Wizard of Oz. Snow White now has Three versions being made so the question is which one gets the Hi-ho and which ones get the Heave-ho?
In addition to Relativity Media and Brett Rattner's Brothers Grimm: Snow White and Disney's Snow and the Seven, Universal just bought producer Joe Roth's take titled Snow White and the Huntsman. This latest version reportedly has the Huntsman (who is sent into the forest to kill the teen but then traditionally lets her escape) chained to Snow White and they Both have to escape. Subsequently, the Huntsman becomes a protective mentor and father figure to Snow.
If this project does sell, then the race is on.

The latest issue of Empire Magazine (via Film Source Code) has a new image from Duncan Jones’ sci-fi thriller Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Jones, who burst onto the scene with his debut movie Moon, describes Gyllenhaal’s character as “a military man who wakes up on a train not knowing how he got there.” Then the train explodes and he’s thrust into another reality where he is controlled by a government program.
Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright also star.
Empire reports the film will be released in the UK on March 11, 2011. Trust me, you’ll want to be there. Walt Disney Pictures announced a set of significant release schedule changes this morning, beginning with moving Monsters Inc. 2 up two weeks. It also removed two potentially high-profile movies from its calendar, along with adding a high school comedy to its spring 2011 roster. Monsters Inc. 2 has been shifted from Nov. 16, 2012 to Nov. 2, 2012, shortly after The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part Two) staked its claim on the Nov. 16 date yesterday. About 15 minutes before Disney's announcement, Paramount Pictures pushed DreamWorks Animation's tentatively-titled The Guardians from Nov. 2, 2012 to Wed., Nov. 21, meaning all three currently scheduled Nov. 2012 movies have shifted dates in the past 24 hours. More impactful than the minor Monsters Inc. 2 change, though, was Disney's removal of newt and Beauty and the Beast (3D) from the schedule. Pixar's newt was previously dated Summer 2012, though it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's been removed considering Pixar already has Brave slated for June 15, 2012. Beauty and the Beast...

After months of public speculation that the fourth and final book in the Twilight series would be split in to two movies, distributor Summit Entertainment made it official today. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part Two) is now scheduled to open Nov. 16, 2012, just under a year after Part One debuts. The decision to split Breaking Dawn in to two movies echoes a similar decision made regarding the final Harry Potter book: Deathly Hallows (Part One) opens in November with Deathly Hallows (Part Two) following in July 2011. Unlike Deathly Hallows, though, Breaking Dawn is the actually the longest book in the Twilight series by over 100 pages. Like Breaking Dawn (Part One), Part Two will be directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Kinsey, Gods and Monsters), while series stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will again reprise their roles. Since opening on June 30, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has earned $288.8 million and...

Screenwriter Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman, the team behind Juno, are set to reunite with Young Adult. Deadline's Mike Fleming reports Charlize Theron will star as a ghostwriter of young adult novels who decides the best way to identify with her target demographic is to become reacquainted with her high school friends and their experiences in trying to carry out all those hopes and dreams that often get crushed by the realities of life. If all goes well the film will go into production in New York on November 10 with the hope Reitman will direct. Soo it won't take long to find out if Reitman can continue his strong run and if Cody can bounce back from the disappointment of Jennifer's Body.
In one of last week's roundups, Brad had the news that Nicolas Cage was set to star as one of Nicole Kidman's kidnappers in Joel Schumacher's Trespass.

With the ensemble superhero feature The Avengers on the somewhat distant horizon, it looks like the comic book adaptation may have already started a new trend with teams of familiar characters joining forces for a feature film. We've already heard about one upcoming project - DreamWorks' adaptation of The Guardians, a story that has an assembly of imaginary icons like Jack Frost and the Easter Bunny protecting kids from the forces of evil. Now Heat Vision reports another similar project is being put together in Legends, which pits together characters like Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer and Hansel & Gretel in a dark fantasy. Having already been sold on the concept of The Guardians, I have to say this Legends project sounds just as intriguing and has plenty of potential to be something truly original and enjoyable, despite its combination of classic characters. The story, based on Nick Percival's...

Red Riding as a scythe wielding crimson warrior woman. Pinnocchio as a Frankenstein beast-like monster. Cinderella as an enticing biker babe with stringy hair. Hansel and Gretel as a pair of psychic warriors. These are not your Middle Age fairy tale characters.
What Nick Percival has done is reimagined Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer, the Big Bad Wolf and other storybook fantasy heroes and heroines into darker steampunk-meets-Seven anti-heroes. Legends: The Enchanted has magic, monsters and motorcycles in it, making it stand out from most of the other comic books out there. Percival's first issue doesn't arrive in shops until later this month but the movie rights have already been bought by Imagine Entertainment and Radical Pictures, with powerhouse producers Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Barry Levine shaping the Legends movie.

Ok, here's a great idea. We're going to take The Brothers Grimm and mash it up with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. You know, have 'dark fantasy' versions of Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer and Hansel and Gretel teaming up to solve a murder mystery. Who says there is no longer any reverence for the true good stories? Legends: The Enchanted sounds like an expansion pack for Magic: The Gathering, but it is also a graphic novel by Nick Percival and now, possibly, a film from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment. Imagine is starting development on a film based on the graphic novel. There's no writer or studio at this point. THR explains that the story kicks into gear when " the remains of Pinocchio are discovered. Red Hood, now a noted wolf hunter, and Jack partner to discover who is murdering the creatures of folklore.

Imagine Entertainment and Radical Pictures are teaming for a film adaptation of Nick Percival's steampunk-meets-fairy tale graphic novel "Legends" reports Heat Vision.
The story begins when the remains of Pinocchio are discovered. Red Riding Hood, now a noted wolf hunter, and Jack the Giant Killer partner to discover who is murdering the creatures of folklore.
Along the way, they are assisted by famous characters re-imagined for a new age such as the mercenary Goldilocks and the psychic exterminators Hansel & Gretel.
Barry Levine, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard will produce but no writer has yet been hired and no studio has yet setup the project.

As you can tell, fairy tales and gothic re-imaginings, or present day “edgy” takes on classic fairy tales, have become really popular lately. So, it’s no surprise that Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are jumping in on the fad with an adaptation of Legends: The Enchanted.
Heat Vision reports that Imagine Entertainment will team up with Radical Pictures to the bring the graphic novel to the big screen. The project has yet to be set up at a studio and they have yet to go out to writers to crack it.
The synopsis of Legends: The Enchanted, from Radical Publishing:
You think you know them. Think again.
Violently ripped from the pages of folklore come the Enchanted. Supernatural immortals living in a dark, steampunk, creature-infested world where nature, technology and foul magic are in constant conflict. When the twisted, burnt remains of the half-wooden, half-mechanical warrior, Pinocchio, are discovered,...

Coming to us straight from Heat Vision is news that Ron Howard and Brian Grazer are teaming up to to develop the graphic novel Legends for the big screen. The graphic novel is set in a dark fantasy world and brings together characters in an Avengers-like style. Now for the best part: the characters are from classic fairytales – Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Jack the Giant Killer and more will make appearances.
Howard and Grazer are producing for Imagine Entertainment while Barry Levine will produce for Radical Pictures.
According to Wikipedia the summary is as follows:
Legends is set in a fictional world settled by creatures know as the Enchanted. The world of the Enchanted has much violence spurned on by different technologies, nature and dark magic. The characters in the Enchanted world come from traditional folklore and literature, and include Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Red Hood.

The crew at Radical Comics have enjoyed a steady stream of Hollywood options since they opened their doors in 2007. Caliber, The Last Days of American Crime, Abattoir, Oblivion, Freedom Formula, and Hercules: The Thracian Wars have all been put in active development, often before the books themselves are released. (Those lush covers are undoubtedly a big help. You just want to pick them up and make a movie out of them.) THR's Heat Vision reports that Radical's latest sell is Nick Percival's new graphic novel, Legends, which has caught the eye of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.

News has reached us from Heat Vision that Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment and Radical Pictures are getting together to develop the graphic novel Legends for the big screen.
The work brings together such characters as Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer and Hansel and Gretel in a very dark setting. No writer has yet been set to adapt the novel to a screenplay, nor is Legends set up at a studio. With characters like that all in one film, they're going to need to find someone pretty special to successfully pen the script.
The Legends plot begins when the remains of Pinocchio are found. Really. Red Riding Hood, who is now a famous wolf-hunter, and Jack (of beanstalk fame) join forces to try and find out who is murdering the creatures of folklore. It's not even quite out yet, but the buzz around Nick Percival's graphic novel Legends: the Enchanted is such that Hollywood has already beaten a path through the dark forest and is huffing and puffing at his door. You can see why too, since Legends ticks a lot of very modish boxes. Comic book? Tick. Classic kids story / traditional fairytale like Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Maleficent and The Girl in the Red Riding Hood? Check. Dark fantasy for the Twi-hards? Yup. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies-style genre mash-up? Oh yes.Legends is a Grimm murder mystery in a noirish steampunk setting, beginning with the death of Pinocchio. Wolf-hunter Red Hood and giant-killer Jack are on the case, with help from mercenary femme-fatale Goldilocks and "psychic exterminators" Hansel and Gretal. Truly, 'tis the Avengers of the fairytale world (or Shrek for grown-ups). With practically every character involved also headed...

Universal’s prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing is set for release next April, it’s been confirmed…
Universal has officially confirmed the release date for its hardly-looked-forward-to currently-in-production prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, the movie has been shooting these past few weeks, and we'd suspect it's nearly wrapped, if it hasn't already.
That said, there's still plenty of time for van Heijningen to get his final cut together, and insert the necessary special effects. For the film is now officially slated for release on April 29 2011, effectively taking the slot in the schedules that the commercially successful remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street took this year.

Over the past few years, Brett Ratner hasn't directed any feature films, but he sure has talked about it. Conan, a Hugh Hefner movie, a Guitar Hero movie, God of War, and as if that's not enough, a Milli Vanilli bio-pic.
Now the Rat says he'll redo Snow White, aiming it closer to the Brothers Grimm fairy tale than the Disney movie. I'm not opposed to that, and in fact, we're seeing a lot of movement away from the sanitized Mickey Mouse versions of classic tales, like Alice in Wonderland and another Tim Burton flick, Maleficent, veering away from Sleeping Beauty.
But this probably won't be a lot like next year's Red Riding Hood, which, while darker, is taking a contemporary stab at the familiar story. Dark Horizons quotes Ratner as saying writer Melisa Wallack "went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things...

Warner Brothers has finally announced a release date for Sherlock Holmes 2.
The sequel to Warners’ hit Sherlock Holmes re-imagining will hit theaters on December 16, 2011. Bookmark that day guys, because this is not the end of WB news!
Warner Bros. is “nearing” a greenlight for The Flash part of a long list of films in development that will feature Wonder Woman, Aquaman and characters from Mad magazine. What a year!
So, at this moment we know that Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams will all return. Robert Downey Jr. will be back as the titular detective, and Jude Law as his loyal Watson.
But when Hollywood super producer Joel Silver was asked whether or not Rachel McAdams would be returning, he simply responded: “She’ll be present”, which probably means that McAdams will not be the female lead in the sequel. Regarding the villain, Moriarty will take center stage.

But when Hollywood super producer Joel Silver was asked whether or not Rachel McAdams would be returning, he simply responded: “She’ll be present”, which probably means that McAdams will not be the female lead in the sequel. Regarding the villain, Moriarty will take center stage.
