The first twenty minutes of the 1979 horror film When a Stranger Calls (watch it Here) really creeped out movie-goers. It stuck in their heads, earning the movie cult classic status. The rest of the running time, viewers don’t often remember so clearly. So when Screen Gems gave the greenlight to a remake, they decided to expand those first twenty minutes to feature length, stretching out the thrills and suspense for as long as possible. It was a clever idea that was brought to the screen in an entertaining way. And if you haven’t seen the When a Stranger Calls remake, this is the best horror movie you never saw. (You can watch that one Here.)

In 2019, the documentary of 80s horror In Search of Darkness became an instant hit with horror fans. Now, a beautiful coffee table style companion book is available and is a must-own for all fans of one of horror’s greatest eras. The book is a walk down the horror aisle of the best mom and pop video store in the heyday of VHS, featuring full color photos, poster art, insightful essays and more. More than just a nostalgic throwback, In Search of Darkness is the kind of book I wish I’d had back in my years as a burgeoning horror fan but is also satisfying for the film fanatic I have become in the years since.
The format is beautifully and simply laid out, with at least a dozen (usually more) movies from each year of the decade presented in order of release accompanied by informative and insightful essays...

It’s a relatively quiet week for home entertainment releases, but Tuesday is playing host to one of my favorite films of the year, Ready or Not, which makes December 3rd feel like an early Christmas to this writer. Scream Factory is showing some love to John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China with multiple editions (including the standard Collector’s Edition as well as the absolutely gorgeous limited edition Steelbook), and Konga, one of my favorite cult films (thank you Terror in the Aisles!) is headed to Blu on Tuesday, courtesy of Kino Lorber.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 3rd include Boar, Christmas Presence, Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, and 1 Must Fall.

First of all, before I start this, I just want to point out that my childhood, despite various factors, was still really great and I’m truly grateful that I grew up the way that I did. My circumstances allowed me to learn a lot and grow to be fiercely independent, and much of that is still something that I carry with me. But the reality is that I did grow up in a home with only a single mom (for most of the time), which meant my childhood was a lot different than many kids I grew up with. And at times, I felt like the odd girl out—but all that changed when I really got into horror.

On October 26, 1984, James Cameron’s The Terminator stormed into theaters and instantly captured the imaginations of an entire generation of filmgoers who may not have realized the true impact Cameron’s independently-made passion project would continue to have on Hollywood and pop culture for decades to come.
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Paul Winfield and Lance Henriksen, The Terminator was a huge success when it was released, taking the number one spot at the box office for its opening weekend against fellow newcomers, Body Double and Terror in the Aisles. The Terminator also enjoyed a lengthy theatrical stay as well- 12 weeks- which gave the buzz surrounding Cameron’s groundbreaking film plenty of time to continue to spread throughout the Us.
It’s no exaggeration to say that The Terminator changed the landscape of filmmaking and is probably one of the most influential pieces of cinematic sci-fi to have ever been created.

As someone who discovered Suspiria on VHS at age nine (after picking the name off the box art for Terror in the Aisles nonetheless), you better believe this writer was more than thrilled to hop on the phone with legendary filmmaker Dario Argento to talk about his latest feature, Dracula 3D.
Considered the Godfather of Giallo, Argento has been the creative force behind numerous influential Italian films including The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, Inferno, Tenebre, Phenomena, and Opera.
During our recent interview with the iconic director, he discussed what fueled his decision to helm a feature based on one of the greatest stories of all time, his experiences working with 3D and his ensemble, as well as why Dracula might just be the biggest romantic in the horror genre.

I wonder what John Carpenter was initially thinking when he ended his career making an undeniably genre defining film, Halloween. When he was writing his screenplay (a brilliant one, at that) with Debra Hill, did he stop and think that A) He was a huge fan of nihilistic endings and what a terrifying feeling it would be for audiences to go home, no doubt the sprawling suburbs featured in his film, or B) He knew deep down that it was sequel bait and by making the film he would go on to make the single, highest grossing independent film of all time. If I was a betting man, and I’m not, I’d still choose A. It was a stamp,...

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none
James Cameron's The Terminator is a masterpiece of cinematic storytelling, conceived by Mr. Cameron while in Rome with a fever years earlier (the late director Robert Altman had a similar situation that led to the writing of my favorite film of his, Three Women, released in 1977). Shot in early 1984 for roughly $6M (the amount spent solely on the sound mix of the superb $90M sequel seven years later), this futuristic action powerhouse grabs the audience by the throat and takes us on a wild ride. Despite the inexorable pace – much like the titular villain’s nature – the film manages to come up for air and miraculously never feels over-the-top, long-winded or plodding.
The Terminator opened on Friday, October 26, 1984 and yours truly missed out on seeing it, electing to see the horror film greatest hits compilation Terror in the Aisles instead.

Even though Destroy the Brain is based out of St. Louis and we love to share with our local readers what’s going on around town, we also know that some of you don’t live in the “Gateway to the West.” As a result we do tend to cover horror and cult events outside of our hometown as well. And this time, boy do we have a not to miss event if you can make it to the “Windy City.” The weekend of March 8th and the 9th is a big one for genre fans living in Chicago. If you tend to go on long movie binges without any sleep then you may want to check out the massive Sci-Fi Spectacular going on March 9th. The mega movie marathon is happening all day at the Portage Theater and will include screenings of Matinee, Soylent Green, In The Mouth of Madness,...

Wow! Chi-Town gets it's fair share of fun film events but the weekend of March 8-9 is looking off the hook. On March 8 Terror In The Aisles kicks off with the Basket Case Triple Feature. Director Frank Henenlotter will be on hand for free picture taking and autographs. Then on March 9 the serious eye glazing gets underway with the Sci-fi Spectacular 7 24 Hour Marathon which will also offer fans the chance to meet the legendary helmer. Details are below. My primary memory of Basket Case is of one night when my younger brother and I were clicking the remote like mad in the blind hope that there would be something worth watching late one Wednesday night. We stopped on a public access channel. That's right!...

There are a few fan favorites from the VHS era that are favorites solely because of they are completely indicative of the VHS boom in the mid 80’s. One movie that would qualify for this distinction would be Terror on Tape. It’s got one of the sexiest covers in the history of media packaging and is ripe for the nostalgic horror fan who sees a VHS tape being squeezed by a monster hand as a symbol of their own frustration and adoration for this somewhat lost medium (somewhat lost because it’s making a creeping comeback). Comet Video and Continental (same thing different name) put this one out as a sort of advertisement for the titles that Continental was distro-ing. Little did they know that the film itself would take on its own life as a piece of iconographic advertising. It’s a collection of short clips from some...

Halloween 2 & 3, TerrorVision, The Funhouse and other forgotten gems like Death Valley and The Island, these are all films that Cliff MacMillan holds near and dear to his heart. Cliff is the one responsible for bringing us all of these great titles to DVD/Blu-ray through Shout! Factory's genre arm, Scream Factory and Cliff is the first to admit that he might be being a little bit selfish in his work. But these titles are just the tip of the iceberg for what Scream Factory has in store for us. We grabbed a few minutes with Cliff to talk about Shout Factory's recent and future genre output. Here's what he had to say...
FEARnet: So why don't you want my kid to go to college?
Cliff MacMillan: (laughs) It's only going to get worse next year, I'm sorry.
Why did Scream Factory release their Halloween 2 Blu-ray so close to Universal's?...

Chicago – Fans of the inventively gruesome filmmaker and visual artist Clive Barker will be delighted by the eleventh installment of Terror in the Aisles. A rare Clive Barker Triple Feature will screen Friday, July 13, at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave, featuring two very special guests, and the restored version of a Barker classic.
The cinematic mayhem kicks off at 7:30pm with the midwest premiere of “Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut,” a 155-minute extended version of the 1990 horror fantasy. Based on Barker’s 1988 novella, “Cabal,” the film revolves around a group of mutant outcasts discovered by a haunted everyman (Craig Sheffer) and his bewildered girlfriend (Anne Bobby). The film is notable for its supporting performance by the acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg (“The Fly,” “A History of Violence”) and its atmospheric score by master composer Danny Elfman. The butchered cut of the film released to theaters wasn’t true to Barker’s original vision,...

Ordinarily I wouldn't bother posting something at this short notice. But this is a very rare Free opportunity. Ever seen God Told Me To (1976)? The seventies horror flick written and directed by Larry Cohen, featuring the screen debut of Andy Kaufman in a brief but memorable role? No? You are in good company. It is truly a minor gem.Well you not only get the chance to see that film but the Brand New Larry Cohen Film With Cohen Himself In Attendance. Free Autographs, free pics, all due to the good folks at Terror In The Aisles. I don't know what this new flick is. I do know I really enjoyed Larry's last foray into directing, the Masters of Horror episode Pick Me Up. Bottom line...

Somehow, despite being a huge fan of the Halloween series (pre-Rob Zombie), the release of the Halloween II 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray slipped under my radar until now. Is it worth a purchase if you already have Halloween II in some other format? If you’re a devoted fan of the movie I’d say yes.
First of all, you finally get the film on Blu-Ray, and secondly, there are some decent special features included on the disc, like deleted scenes and an alternate ending. (Don’t expect any huge revelations or life changing moments in any of this material, though; there was a reason it got left on the cutting room floor in the first place.) Finally, there is the inclusion of the 1984 film Terror in the Aisles as a bonus feature – yes an entire movie. (But more on that later.)

Written by; John Carpenter, Debra Hill
Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence, Lance Guest, Pamela Susan Shoop, Charles Cyphers
This review was originally slated for last October. However, just days after viewing the Halloween 2 30th Anniversary Edition disc, the Moustapha Akkad credit controversy sort of eclipsed the release. If you’ll recall, when the much-anticipated Blu-ray debuted last fall, fans noticed the opening credits had been altered. Universal had replaced Akkad’s “presents” credit with a Universal/McA card.
The late Akkad, an executive producer on all eight original Halloween films, was the key person responsible for the longevity of the series. Fans were outraged and started an online petition to encourage Universal to replace the original credit. The studio eventually acquiesced and gave fans the opportunity to exchange their altered DVD for a copy with the original credit. Since the replacement copies have finally...

The Terror in the Aisles horror and scifi movie marathon is once again coming to the Portage Theater in Chicago for what could be the last time. The small historic movie house has hosted Terror in the Aisles on more than one occasion, as well as showings of classic films, and private events, since reopening in 2006. The present owners are seeking to sell the building, and have found a bidder in the form of the Chicago Tabernacle Church, a relig…...

Folks who requested a “corrected” Halloween II Blu-ray have finally started seeing them show up in the mail, ending a months-long battle between Universal and fans to correct a completely unnecessary wrong. Here’s the scoop…
Last fall, Universal released a 30th Anniversary Blu-ray edition of Rick Rosenthal’s 1981 classic Halloween II to great fanfare. In a surprising, fangasm-inducing bonus, the studio padded the remastered disc with additional scenes, an alternate ending, and 1984′s Terror In The Aisles in its entirety. Terror, a collection of horror clips hosted by Donald Pleasence and Nancy Allen, had never seen digital release before, so it was a real treat on top of the already stellar Halloween II offering. Then the credits rolled…

When it comes to horror celebrity guest appearances, it doesn't get much bigger than Kane Hodder. Star of an incredible number of horror films including Hatchet, Hatchet II and Friday the 13th VII-x, Kane Hodder is iconic in the horror community. And this is why Terror in the Aisles is so excited to be featuring him as a celebrity guest at its film festival in Chicago on December 3rd.
For those unfamiliar with the event, Terror in the Aisles is the ultimate horror film festival. This year the films to be screened include Hatchet, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the unrated and widely banned Hatchet II and Rory Calhoun as Farmer Vincent in the classic '80s slasher Motel Hell (home of the original pig mask!). The festival takes place in the Portage Theater in Chicago. Doors open at 5pm.

This week, the Rick Rosenthal-directed Halloween II made its Blu-ray debut. If you can find it, good luck. Every store I visited in my vicinity didn't bother stocking it for some inexplicable reason. And yes, it does contain Terror in the Aisles . But availability isn't the most egregious problem with this release. The print of Halloween II no longer carries the "Moustapha Akkad Presents" title card at the beginning. Instead, the powers-that-be behind this disc replaced that card with "Universal, an McA Company, Presents." In orange letters and in a font that doesn't match the rest of the picture's opening credits. It's a mystery, even to Moustapha's son, Malek Akkad, why this decision was made to remove the godfather of Michael Myers' name from the...

This writer has a very short list of films that I could watch endlessly over and over again. As an awkward horror-loving girl who taped Freddy Krueger posters to her wall instead of the New Kids on the Block, the horror genre was always my escape.
Growing up, there were three movies in particular that I frequently found solace in whenever I'd pop their VHS tapes into my machine: Terror in the Aisles, Clue and Tom Holland's Fright Night.
Not only did I have the opportunity to experience Fright Night originally when it was released in theaters (can I just say that having a single horror-loving mom in the 80s completely rocked), but I spent so much of my meager allowances over the years on Fright Night rental fees from my local video store that one day my best friend's dad paid a co-worker just to tape it off...
