World War II was still raging in May 1944. The allied invasion of Normandy — aka D-Day — was just around the corner on June 6th. Americans kept the home fires burning and escaped from the global conflict by going to the movies. Two of the biggest films of the year, Leo McCarey’s “Going My Way” and George Cukor’s “Gaslight,” recently celebrated their 80th anniversaries.
Actually, “Going My Way” had a special “Fighting Front” premiere on April 27th: 65 prints were shipped to battle fronts and shown “from Alaska to Italy, and from England to the jungles of Burma.” The sentimental comedy-drama-musical arrived in New York on May 3rd.
And it was just the uplifting film audiences needed. Bing Crosby starred as Father O’Malley, a laid-back young priest who arrives at a debt-ridden New York City church that is run by the older, set-in-his ways Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald). The elder...

The DC Animated Universe had a host of versions of Batman strewn across the timeline, but one DC film portrayed the character a little differently than what is usually the tone that is taken for him. Bruce Timm talked to ScienceFiction.com about how he saw Batman, and how one particular film approached the character differently.
Gotham by Gaslight
Gotham by Gaslight is a film that is different than other Batman films, given that the story is set in an Elseworlds, which means it might not necessarily be part of the main Dcau continuity. The film takes Batman and sets him in Victorian London, where the story follows a completely separate trajectory from what is normally expected out of a Batman story.

Written by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first DC Elseworlds story, which was lauded following its alternate take on the Batman mythos. Set in the Victorian era, the story follows Batman’s quest to apprehend Jack the Ripper, based on the infamous real-life serial killer, and the story was finally adapted into an animated feature in 2018.
However, the animated feature didn’t see Kevin Conroy return to voice the caped crusader, and per Bruce Timm, it was due to marketing reasons.

The term “gaslighting” has come to describe someone who uses manipulation and lies to gain psychological control; the terminology has gained popularity over the past few years, but its origin dates back nearly 100 years to a British play by Patrick Hamilton, “Gas Light.” In 1940, a British film adaptation was released, and four years after that, MGM produced a version that resulted in the first Oscar victory for a three-time winner, the film debut of a screen legend and a memorable storyline that remains part of our culture eight decades later. On May 4, 1944, “Gaslight” had its premiere, and it remains as haunting and thrilling as ever. Read on for more about the “Gaslight” 80th anniversary.
In “Gaslight,” which is set in 1875, Ingrid Bergman portrays Paula Alquist Anton, an orphan who had been raised by her aunt, a famous and wealthy opera singer, who had been brutally murdered years before by an unknown intruder.

It's well known to fans of "The Wizard of Oz" that actor Ray Bolger was originally cast to play the Tin Man and famed comedian Buddy Ebsen was cast as the Scarecrow. They swapped roles at Bolger's insistence, as Bolger had a personal attachment to the role; he was inspired to become an actor after seeing Vaudevillian Fred Stone play the part on stage when Bolger was a child. Ebsen was fine with changing roles, although he had to drop out of production due to makeup problems. The silvery Tin Man makeup contained powered aluminum and Ebsen breathed in big clouds of it, making him sick. At the time, many merely assumed Ebsen had an allergy. Ebsen was replaced with Jack Haley, and the makeup was altered to be a paste instead of a powder.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Our odds currently indicate that Randolph (3/1) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Blunt (4/1), Brooks (4/1), Ferrera (9/2), and Foster (9/2).
The only one of these five actresses with any previous Oscar bids to her name is Foster, who is also this year’s oldest nominee by two full decades. Before she bagged two lead trophies for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she broke through at age 14 with a supporting mention for “Taxi Driver” (1977), becoming the seventh youngest Oscar-nominated performer at the time. Since 47 years separate her first and second featured notices, she now holds the record for longest span between consecutive bids in a single acting category.

A new Batman animated film is in the works that introduces a new version of the caped crusader. The film, Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios a.k.a The Clash of the Empires, will feature an Aztec Batman who becomes the vigilante after his father dies during a Spanish inquisition. The film will be produced by WB Animation and DC.
Aztec Batman gives a cultural revamp to the characters that appear in the DC comics, taking popular characters such as the Joker and Harvey Dent and adapting them to suit the Aztec culture. While many are excited about this new take on the cape crusader, some fans seem to be taking issue with the change in the character’s original design and characteristics.

“We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces,” proclaimed former silent film queen Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) in Billy Wilder’s 1950 masterwork “Sunset Boulevard.” One of the greatest faces of the era belonged to French actor Albert Dieudonne who starred in Abel Gance’s breathtaking 1927 epic “Napoleon.” With this dark eyes, distinct nose and rock star style hair, Dieudonne channels the infamous French military leader and emperor who conquered most of Europe in the early 19th century until his disastrous 1812 invasion of Russia. Exiled to Elba in 1814, he emerged once again and suffered a massive defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He died in exile six years later at the age of 51.

Welcome to Sales to Astonish, a new column in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us news on comic sales and the general moves in the comic market over the past month or so!
Having written this column for over a year now I am starting to notice some distinctive trends in my monthly activity throughout the year. I had touched on elements of this in previous instalments but in a nutshell the trends can be defined as simply as this:
Busy months – January, March, May, October, November & December Busy days – Monday & Thursday Busiest hours – 6-8am Thursday
It will come as no surprise to regular readers that the busiest hours in the week immediately follow the release of new stock in the store on a Thursday. At a guess I would say that Monday is busy because people casually browse the website...

Born in Stockholm in 1915, Ingrid Bergman was working in Swedish and German films during the 1930s, when one of her Swedish films, 1936’s “Intermezzo,” caught the eye of powerful Hollywood producer David O. Selznick. He announced that he planned to remake “Intermezzo” in English and would bring Bergman to Hollywood to star. The only problem was that Bergman didn’t speak English, but she turned out to be a fast learner, and the combination of her work ethic and her radiant beauty put Bergman well on her way to becoming an authentic movie star.
Not only did Bergman become an audience favorite, but her acting skills earned her the respect of moviegoers and Hollywood producers alike. In the course of her four-decade film career, Bergman was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning three for “Gaslight,” “Anastasia” and “Murder on the Orient Express”. Gaslight is a 2023 mystery-thriller film, directed by Pavan Kirpalani (Bhoot Police), this somewhat unsettling but intelligently adapted film is diabolic – and it glows on all accounts. It is the atmospheric account of a woman being driven out of her mind. The word ‘Gaslight’ here is symbolically used to describe an attempt to manipulate a person psychologically, thereby, ultimately, making them doubt their own sanity.
At the very onset of the narrative, we are given to understand there has been a murder. The question here is not only a whodunit but why and how? How the sustained mystery unfolds is what keeps you glued to your seat. The prologue transfers us to Mayagarh Palace, the haveli of Ratan Singh Gaikwad, where through a clip of a home video we are shown him celebrating the birthday of his daughter Mishri aka Meesha.

Ingrid Bergman was one of the most iconic actresses of the 20th century and a frequent collaborator with Humphrey Bogart. Born in 1915 in Stockholm, Sweden to a struggling family, her mother encouraged her to pursue acting at a young age and she made her film debut at 18 in the Swedish movie Munkbrogreven (1935).
Ingrid Bergman
Bergman rose to fame quickly due to her serene beauty, intelligence and strong acting skills. Her career reached new heights when she was cast opposite Charles Boyer in the romantic drama Gaslight (1944), for which she won her first Academy Award. Following this success, she found herself working with some of Hollywood’s biggest names — Cary Grant, Joseph Cotten and, most famously, Humphrey Bogart — with whom she starred alongside in movies like To Have And Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946) and Casablanca (1942).
Despite being married three times during her life, Ingrid Bergman never stopped working on movies.

Very few personalities in Hollywood are as controversial as Sean Penn. One of the most gifted actors of his generation, Penn’s also been a lightning rod for controversy, with his often antagonistic relationship with the press and sometimes misguided moves, such as his now infamous interview with drug baron El Chapo. Yet, he’s also a noted humanitarian, participating in rescue efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and being a tireless advocate for Haiti following the 2010 Earthquake. He’s also been an outspoken supporter of Ukrainian president Zelensky.
In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Celebrity, we look at the scope of Sean Penn’s career. We chart his earlier days as perhaps the most talented young actor to emerge in the early eighties, stealing scenes in Taps and later becoming a star thanks to turns in movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, At Close Range,...

Every year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gives out shiny gold Oscar statuettes to actors in four categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. But believe it or not, what they don't do, anywhere in the Oscar rulebook, is clearly define what the difference is between a lead performance and a supporting performance.
In the end, they leave that decision up to the Academy voters, who can sometimes make weird calls. How the heck they thought Viola Davis was just "supporting" Denzel Washington in "Fences" is anyone's guess, for example. But the thing is, one rule the Academy does have for these categories, is that you are absolutely not allowed to be nominated for Best Lead and Best Supporting for the same performance, in the same film, in the same year.
At least, not anymore. Because someone already did get nominated for...

Nearly 80 years after its premier, Gaslight has never felt more relevant. Adapted from Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 play Gas Light, George Cukor’s 1944 film follows a young newlywed named Paula (Ingrid Bergman) as she’s slowly driven to the brink of insanity by her nefarious husband Gregory (Charles Boyer). The film’s title has since been verbified to describe an extended period of psychological manipulation designed to make the victim doubt their sanity and “gaslighting” was recently named the Merriam-Webster word of the year. The dictionary’s official definition is “the act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one’s own advantage;” a perfect description of the way Gregory abuses his wife in the film. Gaslight hit theaters 78 years ago, but Gregory’s tactics are all too familiar today, an intimate and terrifying version of the large-scale manipulation we see all around us.

Cate Blanchett picked up her fourth Golden Globe Award Tuesday night, for her performance as Lydia Tár in “TÁR,” but more importantly, it was her record-tying third win in Best Drama Actress.
The star, who did not attend the ceremony, now joins Ingrid Bergman, Jane Fonda and Meryl Streep as three-time winners in the category. But Blanchett also has a unique distinction to her haul: She’s the first of these four not to win any of her three drama actress Globes consecutively. A five-time nominee in the category, she prevailed for her breakout turn in 1998’s “Elizabeth” and 2013’s “Blue Jasmine.” The two-time Oscar winner also has a supporting actress Globe for 2007’s “I’m Not There.”
Bergman won for “Gaslight” (1944), “The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945) and “Anastasia” (1956). Fonda bagged all of hers in the ’70s for “Klute” (1971), “Julia” (1977) and “Coming Home” (1978). Streep has the longest gap between her triumphs,...

Actor Vikrant Massey attended an event at Iit Bombay and talked about how he is gearing up for the second part of the film ‘Haseen Dillruba’ alongside Taapsee Pannu. When asked about ‘Haseen Dilruba 2’, Vikrant said: “I am confirming that it’s coming.” He said about the project that “A lot of it is going to be really different. Except for me and Tapsee, there are so many new things. It’s another crazy experience. We had not kept expectations earlier too that it will be so loved, the story, the world around the story.”
“The amount of love we got for the film we thought…. We had left an interesting open ending buffer for a second part and how we can do that and luckily for us the audience responded and in 15 days now I am going to start the shoot for it. Please do go and watch the film.
