Fun Stuff

Trivia:
The most famous scene in To Have and Have Not (1944) is undoubtedly the "you know how to whistle" dialog sequence. It was not written by Ernest Hemingway, Jules Furthman or William Faulkner, but by Howard Hawks. Hawks wrote the scene as a screen test for Bacall, with no real intention that it would necessarily end up in the film. The test was shot with Warner Bros. contract player John Ridgely acting opposite Bacall. The Warners staff, of course, agreed to star Bacall in the film based on the test, and Hawks thought the scene was so strong he asked Faulkner to work it into one of his later drafts of the shooting script. more
Goofs:
Factual errors: The scene showing the patrol boat firing at Morgan's boat, the machine gun is not recoiling, the bolt is not moving nor is there any gun smoke. This type of MG the bolt would recoil after every fired cartridge and would cause the whole gun to have some recoil effect. The gunner was just standing there, he would have to move his fingers or thumbs to fire the gun. more

I have watched, To Have And Have Not, many times, and I am just wondering why Bacall's character calls Bogart's character Steve and not Harry as everyone else does. Does anyone have the answer to this. This is one the best Bogart films he made and has some great lines in it. I have always thought that it was similar to Casablanca. I have also thought that Walter Brennan must have been born old, because I have never seen him in a film that he didn't seem to be less than 60 years old. Slim was a good nickname for Bacall even though she didn't seem to like it at first. Everyone else seemed to pick up on it and she went with it. But there must be a reason that she called him Steve through out the film. Someone out there must have an answer to this one.
