Jessica Raine doesn't ''get'' what it means to be sexy. The 33-year-old actress - who's best known for playing midwife Jenny Lee in the BBC One drama 'Call the Midwife' and stars alongside David Walliams in the Agatha Christie-inspired 'Partners in Crime' - has revealed she makes a conscious decision to avoid ''sexy'' roles because she doesn't understand the concept. She explained: ''Just running through all the scripts I've read recently, I don't like when a character is meant to be sexy, because I don't really know what that means. '''She is sexy. Everybody wants to be this girl' - what is that?...

Ben Caplan has said that Call the Midwife will go through a "big change" in its fourth series.
The actor, who plays Police Constable Peter Noakes, told Digital Spy that the departure of Jessica Raine as Nurse Jenny Lee and move into the 1960s marks a new era in the BBC period drama.
"It was sad to see her go, but she wanted to move over to pastures new," Caplan said.
"I also respected her decision that she'd done the show and got what she needed to get out of it, so it was time to move on.
"It'll be interesting to see how we progress, but it will progress! The show is obviously bigger than one element of it."
Caplan added: "It will be different not having her around, but I'm excited to see how it changes - particularly as we're moving into a new era - we're moving into the '60s.

Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas has revealed that the reasoning behind last night's (March 9) Marie Curie storyline was because the subject of caring for the dying is very close to her heart.
The BBC One show's lead character Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) was written out of the series after she decided that she wanted to quit midwifery at Nonnatus House for a career as a Marie Curie nurse. Her decision was inspired by the death of Chummy's (Miranda Hart) mother, Lady Browne.
It was a departure for a show that usually focuses on the arrival of life, rather than closure and death.
Explaining the reasoning behind writing out Lee with the Marie Curie story, Thomas said: "Bereavement will always hurt, but letting a loved one go with tenderness and care can be immensely healing for all involved.
"The end of life is as important as its beginning, which is...

Jessica Raine, the lead actress in Call the Midwife, has exited the show after an emotional third series finale.
Raine's character Jenny Lee quit her role as a midwife to begin working in a Marie Curie cancer hospital, and to start a new life with Phillip Worth (Stephen Ashfield).
The voice of mature Jenny (Vanessa Redgrave) will still narrate future series, as it was explained that she remained in contact with the staff at Nonnatus House and that she continued to share their stories with the world.
Raine has exited the show to pursue new acting projects after becoming a major star in the BBC One period drama.
She recently appeared in BBC Two's Line of Duty, and also starred in Doctor Who biopic An Adventure in Space and Time last year.
Raine will soon appear in the new Sky Atlantic drama Fortitude alongside Christopher Eccleston and Michael Gambon.

I love strippers! Always have and always will. Having said that I have never been to a real burlesque show. Oh, I’ve been to tittie bars, sure, tittie bars, absolutely! Four years in the Navy and having been a bachelor all my life (I am engaged to a wonderful woman so cut me some slack here) I’ve been to plenty of bars where topless dancers do their shimmy and shake and hang from the pole and all that. But that isn’t really burlesque.
I can remember growing up in St. Louis in the 60s and 70s and looking at ads in the Globe Democrat and Post Dispatch for the Grand Burlesque downtown (was it on Washington?) and the Stardust Burlesque on DeBaliviere. How I wanted to go to those theaters, how I wanted to see Evelyn West and her $20,000 (was that the dollar amount?...

Star of War Horse and Thor will play opposite Mark Gatiss in Shakespeare tragedy, which he calls 'play for our time'
The film star Tom Hiddleston, whose recent hits include War Horse, The Avengers, Midnight in Paris and Thor , will return to one of the smallest stages in London's West End, the Donmar Warehouse, to play the title role in Shakespeare's blood-soaked tragedy Coriolanus.

Downton Abbey may attract all the accolades and Sherlock might whip the fangirls into a frenzy, but Call The Midwife is actually the best show on the PBS schedule.
The series, set in the 1950's, follows Jenny Lee (elegantly played by Jessica Raine) as she embarks upon a new career as a midwife while living and working in East London. The show not only creates a vision of London so vivid you can smell the soot, but surrounds Jenny with a spectacularly well-rounded assemblage of women who share her passion for civil service.
ETonline caught up with Raine to talk about the show's massive popularity, the pressure of quality control and why, at the end of the day, all you need is love.
ETonline: The first season set the bar quite high in terms of powerful storytelling. How do you feel season two lived up?
Jessica Raine: Coming in, we knew we...

Quite often ghosts are described as spirits who cannot bear to leave their loved ones. That appears to be the case in this week’s Doctor Who adventure, as an old house seems to be the home of a creature (or two) that makes you want to run and… Hide by Neil Cross Directed by Jamie Payne Caluburn House is home to a roaming spirit who has been appearing for centuries, calling for help. A former espionage agent and his assistant are dedicated to discovering her secrets when The Doctor arrives. It’s evident quite quickly that the ghost is not all she appears to be…and she is not alone. The Doctor is stranded, and Clara has to get past what appears to be a resentment by the Tardis to save him. Bluntly, this is the story people were expecting when they heard Neil Cross was writing for Doctor Who.

Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas has never been one to shy away from hard hitting topics and in tonight’s opening episode of season two she tackled no less than three often taboo subjects: domestic violence, prostitution and exploitation. Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) confronted all three as she did her best to assist an East End wife who was unfortunate enough to be married to a psychotic thug. Bookended with the warm narration of Vanessa Redgrave, this holiday episode invites viewers to revisit the world of Nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) at the Nonnatus House convent with its heart-warming message to share about the strength of the human spirit and love we all have to share with one another even during the most harsh and extreme times of our lives.
Yet peering behind the curtain to glimpse the beating heart of humanity requires a great deal of strength and fortitude as life was incredibly harsh in the 1950’s and the times before that in how women survived on their own. Something as natural as childbirth could be a difficult ordeal without today’s modern medicines and creature comforts; and the opening scene...

The Christmas edition of Call the Midwife involved the show’s usual mixture of despair and joy as Jenny Lee and her cohorts safely made it through another couple of heart wrenching ordeals in the East end of the 1950s. I must admit that I’ll think twice about watching this show again while feasting on Christmas turkey. The site of a girl delivering her own baby swiftly followed by close-ups of gangrenous feet didn’t do much for my digestive system. However, such scenes do remind us of the kind of challenges that midwives faced and continue to face in the cash starved sections of society. As ever, Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) adopted the role of a psychologist as she helped a frail and frankly frightening old woman get past the trauma surrounding her long lost child. Lee may never make a...

The season finale of Call the Midwife began with the eccentric Sister Monica wandering the streets of London seemingly suffering from dementia. Having found her way back to the convent she regained her senses to an extent and if nothing else she proved herself to be a Penicillin skeptic. Her condition didn’t keep her bed bound for long though and within days she was back on the streets shoplifting from local vendors. Did she know what she was doing? The police believed she did but the nuns (well most of them) thought otherwise. The court case was the main focus of this episode and in the end guilty or not she was acquitted. Well season two of Call the Midwife wouldn’t be the same without her would it?
While Sister Monica was in court, Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) was...

BBC’s acclaimed television series Call the Midwife quickly garnered almost as many fans in the U.S. as fellow British period TV show Downton Abbey.
Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife follows Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine, The Woman in Black), a new midwife in poverty-stricken 1950s East London. Jenny is part of an order of nursing nuns who provide the poorest expectant mothers the best possible care and often at home.
Through their cases, the midwives learn about their patients, including a woman on her 25th pregnancy and a prostitute who gets pregnant at 15 years old. And like in Downton Abbey, this East London community is on the brink of huge social change.
Narrated by Vanessa Redgrave (Anonymous), the TV show also stars Pam Ferris (The Raven), Helen George...

In Call the Midwife episode three Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) found herself in the uncomfortable position of having to hide a male friend in the convent. The nuns, the other nurses and even one of her patients assumed that Lee had found love but she was more concerned with another man: an elderly Boer war veteran named Joe. British comedian Roy Hudd took on the role of Joe and he brought an innocent charm to the character. Lee managed to get past her phobia of the insects that infested his home and formed quite a close bond with the old man although his story was to reach a sad and somewhat predictable conclusion.
While Joe’s tale was the focal point of episode three, there was time for Chummy to flirt a little with a local bobby and for Fred to set himself...

As if Sundays weren't crowded enough in the fancy-drama department, PBS started airing Call the Midwife last night. (You can watch the first episode online.) The show is a British period drama that follows eager young midwife Jenny Lee as she bicycles around fifties England tending to the destitute. It's charming! Think All Creatures Great and Small but with women instead of farm animals. (In a good way.) Fog and doctor bags aside, Midwife needs to answer one important question: Can it scratch the Downton Abbey itch? M'lady, it can.Is there an attractive, naïve brunette at the center of the story? Yes! Jessica Raine stars as Jenny, who's more capable than Lady Mary, certainly, but just as porcelain-skinned and sheltered. Are there poor people? Are they ruddy? Yes again! Midwife is set in dilapidated East London, so the patients are mostly poor. Many of them are also extremely ruddy...

The U.S. series debut of PBS’ Call the Midwife fulfilled all my expectations of a BBC hit that trumped Downton Abbey’s first season ratings in Britain. The period drama, which premiered in the U.K. in January, elicited both laughs and (near) tears in its depiction of midwives and nuns working in the 1950s slums of London’s East End.
The show follows newly qualified midwife Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) as she struggles to “find her feet” in the Nonnatus House nursing convent and accept the seemingly unsanitary living conditions of the women she cares for. Although the...

On a busy premiere night for both broadcast and cable networks, PBS unveiled the first episode of BBC import "Call the Midwife." The six episode series was a smash hit in the U.K., hitting even higher ratings than the first season of "Downton Abbey."
The compelling period drama, based on a memoir by Jennifer Worth, follows novice midwife Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) as she starts work alongside nuns and other midwives at Nonnatus House, a nursing convent in a poverty striken area of East London in the 1950s.
While the first episode of "Midwife" may have lacked the soapy twists that helped make "Downton" a U.S. phenomenon, it was still an involving, offbeat and well-made hour. It's perfect for the PBS faithful, and deserves a shot at developing a following on this side of the pond. Raine is an appealing leading lady and a supporting cast including formidable character actresses Jenny Agutter,...

Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking To the strains of "Brink of Doom" (à la Brigadoon), the parody institution Forbidden Broadway — skewering the Great White Way for 30 years now — reemerges after a three-year hiatus. And just in nick of time: Dear God, there are Singing Newsboys and faux-Czech pixie goddesses running amok (and unmocked) in the theater district! This must not go unanswered!Creator, co-director, and lyrical savant Gerard Alessandrini marshals a flawless quartet of singing, dancing impressionistas (Natalie Charlé Ellis, Scott Richard Foster, Jenny Lee Stern, and Marcus Stevens, with David Caldwell on piano) with another passionate attack on high-priced, low-inspiration commercial theater. He warms up a few leftovers (his old Disney-baiting "Circle of Mice," a slightly stale Jersey Boys sequence), but the fresh stuff is fresh indeed. "S'Wonder Bread! S'mayonnaise!" sings Nice Work's Matthew Broderick, "When I try to dance!" (A brilliantly leadfooted, fast-collapsing soft-shoe ensues.) "Take my cramping...

Call the Midwife actress Jessica Raine has apparently won a role in Doctor Who. Raine will play a character named Emma Grayling on the sci-fi drama, according to her CV at acting agency Gordon & French. Her episode is seemingly titled 'Phantoms of the Hex' and will be helmed by Primeval director Jamie Payne, who also worked with Raine on Call the Midwife. In addition to her role as nurse Jenny Lee on the BBC's hit period drama, Raine has appeared in 2012 Daniel Radcliffe film horror The Woman in Black, (more)...

Chicago – James Marsh’s much talked-about documentary, “Project Nim,” is one of the saddest films of 2011, charting the mishandling of a chimpanzee by well-meaning but misguided humans. Nim Chimpsky was the simian subject of a widely publicized ’70s-era experiment created by Professor Herbert Terrace. His goal was to discover if a chimp could speak in complete sentences via sign language.
Just as Marsh’s 2008 Oscar-winner, “Man on Wire,” seamlessly blended archival footage and interviews with reenactments to create a narrative with the tone and pace of a thriller, the director applies the same cinematic style to “Nim.” The chimp’s life was so complicated that a linear plot line certainly makes the most sense. We meet the human subjects in the order that they came and went in Nim’s life and their on-camera testimonials are admirably honest but often infuriating.
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
