After accidentally revealing the news to a handful of trade publications on earlier this week, Weigel Broadcasting and Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) formally announced the forthcoming launch of their classic cartoon television network MeTV Toons on Thursday.
The channel will debut in June on broadcast stations across the country and on free, ad-supported streaming television platforms, and will include dozens of classic animated series like “Tom & Jerry,” “The Flintstones,” “Johnny Quest” and “Scooby-Doo.”
MeTV Toons builds off a Saturday morning cartoon block that has aired on Weigel-owned MeTV for several years now, which consisted primarily of animated shows from Warner Bros. MeTV Toons will expand on this idea by incorporating other Warner Bros series into the mix, along with shows from Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony’s Columbia Pictures and others.

Weigel Broadcasting Co. is flipping its digital broadcast network Decades into the sitcom-centric Catchy Comedy on March 27, Variety has learned exclusively. The over-the-air network will focus on a library of classic comedies, with an emphasis on key female stars including the signature shows from Lucille Ball, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett.
But also central to the Catchy Comedy lineup are key series from Norman Lear, as well as some of the most lauded sitcoms of all time – including the original “Night Court,” which is back in the spotlight thanks to the success of the revival series on NBC.
Unlike Decades, which wasn’t measured by ratings, Catchy Comedy will be Nielsen-rated. “That takes it into a different sphere, in terms of advertiser availability and access,” said Neal Sabin, vice chairman of Weigel Broadcasting Co. “There are many advertisers that won’t look at these networks unless they’re rated,...

Cutting the cord on pay-tv subscriptions in favor of streaming services isn’t new anymore. Neither are antennas and over-the-air programming. But for those who never quite lived in the antenna age, it’s been quite the discovery. “There’s some great anecdotal stories of how millennials and younger people think it’s an illegal hack,” Neal Sabin, Weigel Broadcasting vice chairman, told TheWrap for this week’s edition of Office With a View. “They grew up with cable, and it’s like how can something like this be free?” Sabin explained. “And then you just have to roll your eyes and say, ‘Let me tell you how things started. Let me tell you what everybody had until cable came along. They had free television with an antenna and you paid for it by watching commercials.’ So that’s what we’re back to.” For years, consumers have been ditching...

Plans to celebrate PBS’ 50th anniversary last year with programming and events were scuttled by the pandemic. As it turned out, the tough environment of the past 14 months reinforced the value of public TV in more significant ways than any marketing campaign could achieve, as PBS president Paula Kerger tells Variety‘s “Strictly Business” podcast.
“In many ways (2020) was the most important year ever for PBS,” Kerger says. The public’s need for information and credible news coverage of the global pandemic and social upheaval in the U.S. was in the PBS sweet spot reflecting “so much of what we’ve been able to do in our 50-year history.”
Kerger said the noncommercial network dug into its mission of being of service to the information and entertainment needs of the American public. PBS’ flagship “NewsHour” saw big viewership gains during an extraordinary news cycle. Behind the scenes, numerous PBS...
