Trivia:
The premise required that the characters use various devices that had to be constructed from only the various materials found on a tropical island. Thus the props had to be specially made and the prop department enjoyed the challenge which was a change of pace from simply bringing in the standard props from storage. The bamboo foot pedal-powered car used in one episode was a particular favorite with the cast queuing up to try it out. moreGoofs:
Revealing mistakes: On the episode with the Russian Cosmonauts, when they are drinking and Ivan is passed out on the table, the bottle in his hand is the one marked with the X which was to be the one with water in it. And then Igor asks to drink from the other bottle (because "theirs is empty"), which would then be the Vodka bottle that Gilligan is holding. But you can clearly see the X on the bottle that Ivan is holding while lying on the table. moreQuotes:
Skipper Jonas Grumby: If I were ever seen talking to this refugee from a junk yard, they'd think the skipper lost all his marbles.Robot: The skipper lost his marbles.

Why is Gilligan's Island considered so often as the silliest show on TV? Perhaps because it wasn't set in white suburbia?Because there was no house,no kids,no first dates,no report cards,no morning newspaper, no boss, etc. Was it really sillier than its rivals, such as Bewitched,Munsters,Flying Nun,Addams Family,Jeanie, etc, which were basicly stupid gimmick shows, featuring fantasy in the middle of pseudo-reality?
Some Gilligans Island episodes were very good and funny(by TV standards);some were stupid (by any standard).Yet unlike the other shows of its genre it clearly told all of us-this is fun, this is campy, this is a spoof of pop culture. It isn't reality. Maybe that's why we remember it(love it or hate it) and forget so many other shows.
