Qai Qai — the social media sensation inspired by the favorite doll of Serena Williams’ daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. — has signed a deal with Republic Records: Kids & Family through a new partnership with internet-first animation studio Invisible Universe.
The companies have joined forces to create original music starring Qai Qai, who has amassed more than five million fans across social media. To celebrate the news, Qai Qai released the song “Dancing on the Moon” on Friday. It features 12-year-old Broadway sensation Sydney Elise Russell, who performed in The Lion King and Frozen, as the voice of Qai Qai. The track was produced by Grammy-nominated hitmaker Johnny Goldstein, who has worked with David Guetta, the Black Eyed Peas and Coi Leray.
“Olympia loved seeing Sydney Russell perform on Broadway in The Lion King and is so excited to listen to her sing as Qai Qai on the upcoming album,” Williams says in a statement.

After a long day of panels, discussions and demos highlighting touring business trends at the Pollstar Live 2020 conference in Los Angeles, a keynote conversation between mega-mogul/manager Irving Azoff and the notoriously unabashed Nicki Minaj felt radical, refreshing and carefree.
Plenty of previous guests talked in circles, providing fluffy, media-trained responses rooted in carefully curated self-promotion. Not so for Azoff, known for his in-your-face attitude, and Minaj, who he dubbed the “Howard Stern of Beats Radio.” The duo covered a wide array of topics – The Grammys debacle, “retirement” and Trump were all discussed.

Did you know Taylor Swift released an album today? If not — how are things, living as you do under a seven-ton rock inside your mossy cave in Xilitla?
Swift’s 18-track Lover dropped at midnight Thursday, yet the record has been undergoing a months-long slow release — à la the most complexly engineered of drugs — leading all the way back to the start of the year. Her all-out pre-drop promotion this time around can be attributed, in part, to a sea change in record-company strategy — labels’ marketing for new albums these...

Taylor Swift announced she has a "new home" on Instagram Monday. Twelve years after releasing her eponymous debut album on Big Machine Records, the 28-year-old singer-songwriter has signed a new record deal. As part of her pact, Swift is working to reshape how artists are paid for Spotify streams. In 2015, Swift wrote a letter to Apple Music, slamming the company for not paying artist royalties during its free-trial period; the following day, the company changed its policy. She's been equally critical of Spotify, its main competitor. "I'm ecstatic to announce that my musical home will be Republic Records and Universal Music Group. Over the years, Sir Lucian Grainge and Monte Lipman have been such...

The celebrating didn’t stop when the credits rolled at the end of the MTV Video Music Awards.

Amy Winehouse. Amy Winehouse documentary: 'Heartbreaking' and 'impressive' In an era of disposable pop music, the songs of the late Amy Winehouse feel timeless. Her sound spans the decades: bluesy and jazzy, a little bit punk and a little bit gansta. She was an old soul belting out new school lyrics that were confessional, profane, clever, and withering. She has been compared to Billie Holiday (in more ways than one, alas) and Winehouse herself has noted Sarah Vaughn as an influence. Her phrasing could turn any note into an adventure, bending and stretching it until it made multiple emotional statements. Her voice was both propulsive and brittle with a vibrato that could pound like a jackhammer or purr like Eartha Kitt. And that's to say nothing of her signature look, the beehive hairdo, the tattoos, and the increasingly garish makeup that would eventually hide much more than facial blemishes. Unfortunately,...

For some reason I get at least four emails each week from VH1 Press telling me all sorts of exciting news about the network that I haven't actually seen since I last watched Pop Up Video reruns while doing homework in 1998. It's rather inexplicable, not because I don't get a ton of pointless trade news to my Pajiba email but because I get this to my private email account. It is the only trade news I get to that email account. And I felt that eventually I needed to share with you. Because I'm a giver.
Some of this news is past due (i.e. advertising episodes that have since aired) but I know that it doesn't matter. Just because the train wreck isn't on the side of the road anymore doesn't mean the pictures aren't still astonishing.
