You’d think the fact that this week’s Homeland is titled “There’s Something Else Going On” — a direct quote from Carrie Mathison that underscored her increasing unease about the impending prisoner swap — would’ve prepared me for the episode-ending humdinger.
But noooooo. I foolishly let my guard down after the child-bomber threat passed and Saul was safely back in U.S. hands, and I regretted doing so the second those missiles rained down on the CIA’s caravan. (What do you call it when you gasp and scream at the same time? ‘Cause that’s what I did.

It doesn’t seem possible that it was around 30 years ago that A Flock of Seagulls ran so far away or Modern English melted with us, but it was. The story behind those acts, their biggest hits, and dozens of other New Wave acts are captured in all their ‘80s bad hairdo-ed, brightly colored-glory in “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s.” Written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, with a forward by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and an afterward by Moby, the book examines the New Wave era through the filter of 36 songs associated with the time, such as Gary Numan’s “Cars,” Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film” and The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” Each chapter deals with one act and, while not limited to the group’s biggest hit, explores the story behind that tune and the...

What a week it's been! Not least for yours truly, as it's been the first full week since November where I've not been flinging myself off diving boards and swanning around in spandex. And I have to say, I've missed it!
Not the bruises or the tears, naturally, but the camaraderie and the sport itself have been second to none, and my whole Splash! experience has been fantastic.
Narrowly pipped to the post by Towie's Dan Osborne last Saturday, I didn't quite make it to the final show in a swimming costume, but content enough being last girl standing, I took my seat alongside the rest of the cast of 2014 to enjoy the all-male final. Dan, Keith Duffy, Diversity's Perri Kiely and Paralympian Richard Whitehead all donned their briefest of briefs yet to take to the boards one final time.

ABC has greenlighted Black-ish, a single-camera comedy pilot starring Anthony Anderson. The project, which had a script commitment with penalty, hails from ABC Studios, Laurence Fishburne‘s Cinema Gypsy and Principato Young. Written by Kenya Barris (The Game) loosely based on his personal experiences, Black-ish centers on an upper-middle-class black man (Anderson) who struggles to raise his children with some sense of cultural identity despite constant contradictions and obstacles coming from his liberal wife, old-school father, and his own assimilated, color-blind kids. Cinema Gypsy’s Fishburne, his producing partner Helen Sugland and Tom Russo executive produce with Anderson and Barris along with Pye’s Peter Principato, Paul Young and Brian Dobbins. There is no deal in place yet for Fishburne to act, but he had been open to doing guest appearances, and there was an idea for him to play Anderson’s father. Judy Greer is set as the female lead opposite Nat Faxon in FX‘s untitled Andrew Gurland comedy pilot. The half-hour comedy is about the lengths to which two best friends are willing to go to salvage their marriage. Lina Bowman (Greer) and her husband Russ Bowman (Faxon) get along great in every room except the bedroom. Living in a new city with no friends, and overwhelmed by her three young daughters, at the end of the day Lina would rather curl up with vampire fan fiction than her always-horny husband. In order to save their otherwise great marriage and family, she gives her husband permission to take care of his needs elsewhere. Gurland, who wrote the script, will also direct and executive produce alongside Paul Young and Peter Principato. Salamo Levin serves as a producer. Los Angeles, California (X17online) - Nicolas Cage, an avid comic book collector, was the target of a ring of nerdy thieves who stole the actor's copy of the 1938 Action Comics No 1 and the whole event will now be made into a film for Lionsgate, the studio has announced. The writers of Reno 911, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, will produce with Peter Principato and Paul Young, a heist comedy to be called Action No. 1. The story focuses on a group of geeks who attempt to steal Cage's classic comic book. The plot line will follow real-life events from the theft in 2000, the reappearance of the issue in 2011, when it sold at auction for a record $2.1 million, and was finally recovered by authorities. This actually sounds funny, and perhaps the first Nicholas Cage-connected movie that I'm excited about in a looooong time!
Previously on Nicholas Cage's comic book caper: In 2000, a group of nerds planned to steal the actor's prized possession -- a copy of Action Comics No. 1 which introduced us to Superman aka Man of Steel.
Then in 2011, the missing comic book was discovered in an abandoned storage locker. Voila, it sold for a record $2.1 million at an auction last November.
Now, THR has told us that Lionsgate is turning this comic book heist into a comedy with "Reno 911" creators/writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. They will also be producing along with Peter Principato and Paul Young.
The big question -- will Cage appear? Will he be game to poke fun at himself and his inner nerd? I think he should! He hasn't done a seemingly smart movie in quite a while.

Way back in 2000, something very precious was stolen from Nicolas Cage's (probably now defaulted on) mansion: a rare comic book. The comic, which featured the first-ever appearance of Superman, was Mia until 2011, when it was discovered in an abandoned locker. It was later auctioned for a whopping $2.1 million. Now, this may not seem as titillating as say, a fire-pissing demon but this story of comic-book theft looks like it's making its way to the big screen. Lionsgate has greenlit "Action No. 1," a comedy based on the great Cage crime from Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, writers of "Reno 911!". The story follows a gaggle of geeks who try to steal Cage's very rare comic. The writing partners will also produce the film, along with Peter Principato and Paul Young. While Cage fans may be miffed by the project's interesting-sounding premise and potentially enjoyable movie-watching experience, fear not: Nic's sitting this one out.

Paul Young has forgiven Gino D'Acampo for breaking into his home back in 1997. The celebrity chef served two years in jail at the age of 21 for stealing £4,000 worth of guitars from the 'Wherever I Lay My Hat' singer. Despite suspecting that D'Acampo's first apology was issued in preparation for his triumphant I'm A Celebrity appearance in 2009, Young said that he was hoping the pair would team up in the future. "Gino wanted to apologise," he told The (more)...

Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in The Way, Way Back, which will be directed by The Descendants team, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, The Playlist have reported.
The project, which has taken years to get off the ground, tells the story of a teenage boy who over the course of summer forms a friendship that gives him the strength to stand up to his bullying stepfather and reconnect with his mother.
The film will be directed by Faxon and Rash with Mandate Pictures, Paul Young and Shawn Levy all producing.
Young brought the script by Faxon and Rash to Shawn Levy, then titled The Way Back, all the way back in 2007. He immediately took a shine to it, committed to direct and Fox Searchlight gave it a greenlight.

Four years before The Descendants hit theaters, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (the latter is best known for playing Dean Pelton on Community) collaborated on The Way Back, a coming-of-age story that didn’t actually involve an epic journey from Russia to India. Paul Young soon picked it up for Fox Searchlight, and Shawn Levy was getting ready to helm the project. To put it in simpler terms: it was looking good. Problem is, this was 2007, and the WGA strike ended up screwing the project’s future for a little while.
Now, in 2011, it’s reported by Variety that producer Kevin Walsh has acquired the rights to the screenplay, now titled The Way, Way Back. (There is no way in hell Peter Weir‘s film didn’t lead to that slightly extended title.) In some cases, a producer getting their hands on a script might only mean that it’s...

So here's an example of how a project, through a variety of circumstances, can take years to get off the ground. All the way back in 2007, producer Paul Young brought a script by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash ("The Descendants") to Shawn Levy entitled "The Way Back" (though it now seems to be called "The Way, Way Back"). Anyway, he immediately took a shine to it, commited to direct and Fox Searchlight gave it a greenlight. But this was just before the WGA strike of 2007 and with no guarantee they could finish it before the work stoppage, the project stalled.

“Previously on Desperate housewives Orson packed his bags after finding out Andrew was the cause of Carlos’ mother’s death. Bree decided that it was time to come clean to Gaby. A dying nurse made a confession about accidentally switching two babies at birth, financial difficulties force the Delfino’s to rent out their house which in turn, aids the return of ex-con Paul Young.”
Season 7 continues in this racing fashion with not one, but two new faces on the lane who promise to cause surplus commotion, suspicion and complications. Lynette (Felicity Huffman) and Tom (Doug Savant) welcome another bundle of joy into their ever expanding family, adding to their already strained relationship. Matters are certainly not helped by the arrival of a new resident on the lane, Renee Perry (Vanessa Williams-Ugly Betty) who brings with her a devastating secret which could potentially be the breaking point of the Scavo’s marriage.

Exclusive: Judy Greer, who is recurring on CBS’ revamped Two And A Half Men this season, is developing her own series at ABC targeted for next fall. ABC is finalizing a deal for the half-hour single-camera comedy, which will be written by feature scribes Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan (Made Of Honor). The project is inspired by Greer’s life, where she moved from Los Angeles for the man she loves and found herself raising stepchildren and making new friends in a small suburban town. Greer, repped by CAA and Principato-Young, is producing, with Elfont, Kaplan and Principato-Young’s Peter Principato, Paul Young and David Gardner executive producing. On the big screen, Greer will next be seen in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and Jay Duplass’ Jeff Who Loves At Home. On TV, she co-starred on the CBS comedy Mad Love last season.

It was a slow week in Fairview. That is to say, ahem, that very little of interest happened on last night’s new episode of Desperate Housewives: Gaby and Carlos’ sex life petered out (literally), and she tried to spice it up with a stripper; Susan morosely moped around town, trying to get in trouble so she could be punished and feel less guilty about the murder she’s helping to cover up with the other ladies; Lynette and Tom bickered about how to raise the kids (and she did one hell of a keg stand); and Renee continued...

As the final season rolls on, it's becoming clear just how 'Desperate' these housewives really are. The plot thickened on the Oct. 2 episode of Desperate Housewives, as a visit to Paul Young (Mark Moses) in prison revealed to Bree (Marcia Cross) that her gratuitously shirtless detective boyfriend may be the one who sent her that chilling letter last week! Though honestly, if people would remember to put the return address on their mail, such problems would not exist. Across the street, Carlos' (Ricardo Chavira) murder guilt was giving him performance problems in the bedroom, so Gaby (Eva Longoria) knew there was only one thing to do -- hire a stripper! Much to her dismay, however, Carlos wasn't down with that idea; he got pissed at her and left the room. Sorry, writers, but I don't care how guilty Carlos feels; there is no way a straight man would turn down...

Another week, another solid installment of Desperate Houswewives.
Once again, this episode made me realize how much I'm going to miss this phenomenal show. "Making the Connection" reminded me that I better enjoy this while it lasts because my Sundays will soon feel a bit empty without the Wisteria women’s sometimes bizarre and silly shenanigans.
Speaking of which, I didn’t care too much for Susan’s ridiculous behavior. Typically, I easily overlook the outrageousness in shows such as Desperate Housewives, but Susan’s foolishness became annoying quickly.
I got that she was feeling distant and longing for some punishment after smoking in a prohibited area and placing unrecyclable items in the recycle bin. I didn’t need to see her also stealing from the freebies, parking in a fire zone, or even assaulting a motorcycle. It just wasn’t funny and Susan was obviously having trouble with dealing with her guilt.

This week’s episode of Desperate Housewives epitomized a daytime soap. It offered up some super shallow story lines, then concluded with one key development that served as an admonishment: Now matter how dull the program, if you want in on this series you gotta stay in.
For too much of the hour, the Gabrielle and Susan sections played on the theme of the continued burden of keeping their secret (the unintentional killing, by Carlos, of Gabby’s stepfather...

Need a refresh of last week’s season premiere? Take a look at my recap. In this week’s episode, we have a lot of suspicion (the theme of the season, it seems) and as usual, plenty of hijinks.
“Making The Connection” begins where we left off, with Bree on the receiving end of a disturbing letter not unlike the one Mary Alice received in her mailbox 8 years ago. In a voice-over, Mary Alice explains how she came about to be the original recipient and how she later killed herself to seal the secret from her friends and family. Karen McCluskey comes by and Bree asks if she’s seen anyone by her mailbox, explaining that she received a rather odd note. “It’s just a note, Bree...let it go,” says Karen. Ah, to have a secret on Wisteria Lane.
Gabrielle, worried that her romantic connection was Carlos has...
