Subversive American author Bret Easton Ellis is set to make his directorial debut with “Relapse,” an elevated horror film he wrote starring “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn.
Paris-based Snd has boarded the project as producer, alongside Adrian Guerra’s Nostromo (“Penny Dreadful”) and Simon Wallon’s Kiss & Kill (“Bonnie”). Snd will handle worldwide sales on “Relapse,” as well as French distribution, and will tease the title at the EFM with an exclusive sizzle reel.
Quinn, who will next be seen in “A Quiet Place: Day One” and the “Gladiator” sequel, will star in “Relapse” as Matt Cullen, who checks into rehab after witnessing a horrific death during a drugged-up party. Three months later, he is set to get his life back together, staying at his parent’s mansion in the hills of Los Angeles. But things have changed around Matt and everything seems off balance.

Bret Easton Ellis’ latest novel “The Shards” goes where only Bret Easton Ellis could possibly go: back to 1981 Los Angeles with a 600-page book, largely unedited, that’s mostly about himself.
That’s partly because the main character is named Bret, a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund prep-school brat who’s writing a book called “Less Than Zero.” Yes, this is literary-horror autofiction from the author of that aforementioned 1985 debut and shocking postmodern novels like “American Psycho.”
“The Shards” is also a more-or-less direct transcript of the Patreon serial Ellis launched in late 2020, and its unwieldiness means it’s well-matched for a long-form, flashy series adaptation at HBO. As IndieWire has confirmed, “The Shards” is now being set up at the premium cabler with Ellis as the sole writer while executive producing with Nick Hall (Emmy-winning executive producer on “The White Lotus”) and Brian Young (an executive producer...

Philly native Eddie Konrad underwhelmed in a Muhammed Ali-themed challenge on “Top Chef” this week, but he has a chance to return by going against “Lck’s” current champ who hails from San Francisco, Michelle Minori. As host and judge Tom Colicchio tells us, “Will Michelle rise to victory and rejoin the ranks? Or will Eddie dig deep and prove he wants it more.”
Eddie walks in with confidence, his knife bag a-swinging. Tom asks Michelle if she thinks she can beat him. “I want to. Eddie is tough.” She then admits she was not expecting to see Eddie on the after-show. “He’s one of the strongest chefs here, I think.” Not to put any pressure on the pair, but Tom reminds them that since “Last Chance Kitchen” will be shutting down for Season 16 of “Top Chef,”whoever wins goes back into the competition and joins five other players.

On last week‘s “Top Chef,” David Viana, the chef from Tom Colicchio‘s hometown, sang the blues as the 9th eliminated chef. Luckily he won the most recent “Last Chance Kitchen” and so he’s still alive in the competition. To get back in he’ll have to go head-to-head against the chef that failed to score in this week’s concession stand themed challenge on the basketball court at the University of Kentucky.

For the first time in series history, Bravo’s “Top Chef” sprung its iconic “Restaurant Wars” challenge on the competitors much earlier than expected. 9:01 p.m. Nini Nguyen is quite pleased with herself after winning the second elimination challenge with her spoonbread with shrimp etoufee sauce: “All the other contestants are feeling, ‘This girl can hang.’ ” Then there’s guilt-ridden Eddie Conrad, who used a good third of his team’s $1,500 budget just on his lamb dish while causing the Natalie Maronski to be eliminated for not having enough lemons for her curd pie dish. It was even more crushing since she won the first challenge.

What might appear to be an homage to David Bowie glitz on its cover, is actually much deeper in Brady Corbet’s Vox Lux which follows the unconventional metamorphosis of a young teenager from school shooting survivor to tortured pop idol.
Similar to how Natalie Portman pulled out all the stops and transformed into a sublime, razor-sharp ballerina for her Oscar-winning role in 2010’s Black Swan, she made certain she was vocally prepped and choreographed before her 10 days of shooting on Vox Lux (the entire film was shot over 22 days). Financing dropped out prior to the pic’s production and delaying its start which provided Portman with extra prep time so she was ready to hit the ground running when filming began.
“It gives you more time when things fall apart, as long as they come back together again,” Portman says.

Neon has landed Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux,” a drama about a troubled pop diva that’s drawing some serious awards buzz for star Natalie Portman. The film premiered to largely favorable reviews at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Several studios were interested in nabbing the project.
It is possible that the indie studio could push “Vox Lux” into theaters this year in order to qualify for Oscars, something it did to great success with “I Tonya,” another Toronto acquisition that went on to score an Academy Award for Allison Janney.
“Vox Lux” fits in with Neon’s strategy of partnering with younger, edgier auteurs. The film is only the second feature for Corbet, who previously directed “The Childhood of a Leader.” Previous Neon releases include “Colossal,” “Beach Rats,” and “Ingrid Goes West.” The studio had an arthouse breakout with “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about triplets separated...

Brady Corbet certainly has the wind in his sails when it comes to moving from acting to writing and directing. In addition to starring in projects such as Clouds Of Sils Maria and Olive Kitteridge, the filmmaker has begun to create material – recently making his feature length directorial debut with The Childhood Of A Leader, which he also co-wrote. That film has swept through the 2016 festival circuit – collecting accolades and nominations as it went – generating a momentum that Corbet has ploughed straight into his next project: Vox Lux.
Taking what seems to be a similar, sweeping approach to time as his debut film does, Vox Lux begins in 1999 and tracks the passage of a 15 year period. The plot centers on a young musical artist named Celeste, whose gaze provides the lens through which we view significant historical events, as she unexpectedly evolves into a superstar. Rooney Mara is now confirmed...

If included, it would count as one of the rare Venice preemed North American premiere debuts and uncommon 35mm treats at the fest. After doubling up at the Venice Film Festival with the Luigi de Laurentiis” award for a Debut Film and the Best Director Horizons award, The Childhood of a Leader‘s Brady Corbet recently picked up another Best Director award at the Lisbon & Estoril Film Fest. A regular figure at the festival as an actor in both short and features from Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin era up until Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer, Corbet also had his short debut (2009’s Protect You + Me.) and writing credits on Mona Fastvold’s The Sleepwalker (2014) and last year’s short Rabbit from Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre all premiere at the festival. The available acquisitions title has had its share of extremely convinced supporters and even the detractors acknowledge the genius in Corbet’s debut oeuvre.
