HBO’s anthology series “True Detective” is back after five years with a new season that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards. This latest installment that premiered in January comes with the subtitle “True Detective: Night Country” and, while still part of the franchise, it’s the first to not have the involvement of creator Nic Pizzolato – other than his executive producer credit. It was instead developed by Issa Lopez who wrote (or co-wrote) and directed all six episodes, and stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in an Alaskan town investigating the disappearance of eight scientists. Let’s re-examine the three previous seasons of “True Detective” at the Emmys – which garnered a combined total of 22 nominations and five wins – to determine possible nominations in categories for the current season.
Here is the complete Emmys history for the first three seasons of “True Detective”:

Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

The sublime “Sunday” diner scene with the Broadway legends in Netflix’s “Tick Tick Boom” has become even more tear-inducing and meta with the recent passing of Stephen Sondheim, whose “Sunday in the Park with George” musical about French pointillist painter Georges Seurat started it all. First, through Jonathan Larson’s (Andrew Garfield) tribute song, “Sunday,” set in The Moondance Diner in SoHo, where he toils as a waiter and dreams of becoming the next Sondheim. Second, through “Tick Tick Boom” director Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ambitious, even miraculous, staging of the scene in a replica of the ’90s diner on a New York soundstage.
Miranda’s idea was to not only pay tribute to Larson’s heroes of Broadway but also to his own legacy, since he tragically died before the opening of “Rent” and was unable to witness its impact on the theater world. Thus, through strict protocols and safe distancing,...

Initially conceived as a one-man “rock monologue,” then taking on an unexpected new depth after the early death of its creator at age 35, Jonathan Larson’s “Tick, Tick… Boom!” is a show uniquely suited to the musical theater crowd — and not just the masses of fans Larson won over with “Rent.” It resonates especially strongly with the writers, performers and fellow creatives who can identify with how he articulated the struggle to be recognized, to make meaningful work and, according to the high bar Larson set for himself, to “wake up a generation.” People like Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Before “Hamilton,” before even “In the Heights,” Miranda was inspired by what Larson had accomplished with “Rent,” discovering in the show a fresh kind of musical, one characterized by a contemporary new sound, characters with recognizable struggles and an uncommonly diverse cast. In an awful twist of fate, Larson died of an aortic...

Production designer Alex Digerlando had a unique opportunity when it came to set-building for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s stage-to-screen adaptation of “Tick, Tick … Boom!” (in theaters Nov. 12) — he could walk around the actual Greenwich Street apartment of “Rent” playwright Jonathan Larson. “There are a lot of vestiges of that period that are still there,” Digerlando says.
“Tick, Tick … Boom!,” an autobiographical musical, tells the story of Jon, a promising young theater composer who navigates love, friendship and the pressures of life as an artist in New York City.
Larson, played in the film by Andrew Garfield, lived at the address his entire adult life, and died there in 1996 after suffering an aortic dissection on the day “Rent” was about to have its first preview performance.
Digerlando found a treasure trove of photos from Larson’s friends. But it was the playwright’s sister, Julie, who provided the most valuable asset: Larson...

“We’re making a true replica rather than a representation,” explains production designer Alex Digerlando about his Emmy-nominated work on “Fosse/Verdon.” The series about the relationship between showbiz legends Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams) required Digerlando and his team to recreate everything from the couples opulent Manhattan penthouse to the iconic sets of some of Fosse’s most famous films. In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Digerlando calls his approach to the task “two pronged.” We have to get all the period details right to make sure that the environments that the characters inhabit feel appropriates, but then we also have to build these recreations of sets. to think about how these sets would have been created at the time.

For Netflix limited series Maniac, a show that “lent itself to being creative and out there,” production designer Alex Digerlando thoughtfully crafted the many layers of a retrofuturistic world unlike any seen on screen before.
Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, with whom Digerlando enjoyed a “great collaboration” on the first season of True Detective, the series centered on Annie (Emma Stone) and Owen (Jonah Hill), two strangers who meet while participating in a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial, connecting in a way that neither understands.
During these trials, the pair would be transported into a series of drug-induced fantasy scenarios—including a 1980s Long Island lemur caper, a 1940s séance and an epic world akin to Lord of the Rings—which Digerlando brought to life. His crowning achievements, though, would have to be his portrait of a “bizarro New York”—a strange, ambiguous world in which past, present and future converge—as...

Sets crafted for television have not traditionally been known for their glamour, says “Fosse/Verdon” (FX) production designer Alex Digerlando.
“TV was always about characters interacting, and sets were something to fill the background,” he notes. “You got close-up and medium shots and you needed some kind of background to make it feel not random. To ground the action.”
But as the action has ramped up, so have expectations for production design, even though networks don’t always make extra room in their below-the-line budgets, leaving the art department with the same funds whether a show is contemporary or period.
That leads production designers including Digerlando — along with his fellow designers Michael Whetstone (ABC’s “The Kids Are Alright”) and Jason Sherwood (Fox’s “Rent”) — to come up with some pretty creative solutions. But as the action has ramped up, so have expectations for production design, even though networks don’t always make extra room in their below-the-line budgets, leaving the art department with the same funds whether a show is contemporary or period.

“Fosse/Verdon” magnificently kicks off in Episode 1 (“Life is a Cabaret”) with Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) struggling to shoot his Oscar-winning “Cabaret” in Germany, with his wife and muse, Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams), coming to the rescue to release his creative spirit. It reveals that tricky yet synergistic partnership that defined the uncompromising Fosse vision, with Liza Minnelli’s Sally Bowles (Kelli Barrett) and the dancers perfecting the iconic “Mein Herr” number in the dark and smoky Kit Kat Klub.
“The way the [‘Cabaret’] musical is constructed it’s unusual because the numbers are performed at the club,” said Alex Digerlando, the production designer who also worked on the visually inventive “Maniac.” “We looked at behind the scenes featurettes, and from what we could tell, even though it was shot on a soundstage, it didn’t seem that walls were pulled. Patrick Somerville knows about expanding the edge of the TV frontier. The novelist and screenwriter wrote for HBO’s The Leftovers, which began by exploring the aftermath of a Rapture-like event and soon evolved into a multi-faceted meditation on relationships and human nature.
Similar to that show, Maniac (whose 10-episode debut season is now on Netflix) is about much more than it initially seems. Based on — but very different from — a Norwegian series by the same name, it depicts an alternate reality set in a close replica of present-day New York City. It details experimental drug trials whose down-on-their-luck participants include the show’s lead characters, Owen and Annie, played by Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. In establishing the drug-trial framework, the show brandishes plenty of Brazil-meets-Michel Gondry absurdist flourishes: An animatronic koala bear plays chess in the park against a human opponent, and imaginary services such as...

Instead, 8 female actors consisting of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, and Awkwafina will join forces in a new heist film, Ocean's 8.
While there are only 8, the team seems reminiscent of 2001's elite team of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Don Cheadle etc. You've got your A-Listers in Bullock, Blanchett, and Hathaway much like Clooney, Pitt, and Damon are. The lavish, ornate designs of “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” the druggy 70s’ SoCal beach-city look of “Inherent Vice” and the fairy-tale landscape of “Into the Woods” are among the work nominated by the members of the Art Directors Guild for the Adg’s 19th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards.

Last week, I spoke with True Detective production designer Alex Digerlando about 13 props and set pieces from the series’ first seven episodes. This morning, I emailed with him about the finale’s giant stone maze, in which Rust, Marty, and Childress have their final faceoff. This is what he had to say about the location.
