Few moments are more infamous in American history than the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. After years of fighting the Civil War, Lincoln had finally completed his task. With Lee’s surrender, he wanted to move forward with the act of reconstruction. Obviously, we know John Wilkes Booth cut that time short, but the story behind Booth’s capture proves thrilling throughout Manhunt. Excellent craftwork and a committed cast help Manhunt one of the sleeper achievements of 2024 on TV.
Manhunt – The Plot
The new Apple TV+ series centers on two stories – Booth (Anthony Boyle) as part of a larger conspiracy and Edwin Stanton’s (Tobias Menzies) hunt for the traitors. Over the course of the series, we watch as Booth and his compatriots move the final pieces into position to kill Lincoln. When the right opportunity presents itself, their three-pronged plan springs into action. Simultaneously, we watch Stanton move from a role as U.

Some of the 19 women who have accused President Donald Trump of sexual misconduct, called on Congress, Monday, to investigate their claims, asking elected officials to hold him to the same standards as the many other powerful men who have recently suffered significant fallout from their alleged behavior.
Samantha Holvey, Jessica Leeds and Rachel Crooks shared their alleged experiences with Trump while another accuser, Lisa Boyne, called in by phone to the event at a Manhattan hotel.
Crooks was a 22-year-old receptionist in Trump Tower in 2005 when she was allegedly “forcibly kissed by Mr. Trump on our first introduction” on her cheeks and then her lips,...

Amy Sherman-Palladino’s characters are always so casually witty, it’s about time one of them actually tried being funny for a living, right?
The Gilmore Girls creator’s sparkling new Amazon comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — debuting Wednesday, Nov. 29 — is set in the burgeoning stand-up comedy scene of 1958 New York City, and that time period is such a perfect fit for Sherman-Palladino’s old-Hollywood, rat-a-tat-tat dialogue, you wonder why she ever set anything in modern times. "What happened here, happened before!" Screen Media Films has unveiled a short but effective trailer for the horror sequel Jeepers Creepers III, the newest since Jeepers Creepers II hit theaters way back in 2003. Once again directed by Victor Salva, who made the first two, this one actually takes place between the first and second film. This one is about Sergeant Tubbs assembling a task force hellbent on destroying The Creeper, which is terrorizing a local farming community. The cast includes Brandon Smith, Meg Foster, Gina Philips, Carrie Lazar, Stan Shaw, Joyce Giraud, and Jonathan Breck playing The Creeper. In the past I’ve mentioned some of what AfterShock Comics has been up to in my column here, but I haven’t talked about them as much as I should. I really haven’t been talking about the good work they’ve been doing. Having recently read World Reader #1, I decided I need to change that.

The most classic example of an apartment that you see in a television show where you think to yourself “there’s no way they could live there in real life” was on the show Friends. Monica and Rachel’s apartment is a ridiculously huge place with two nice sized bedrooms in the heart of a prime location. It’s a good time to be an X-Men fan. In the wake of last week’s X-Men: Prime, Marc Guggenheim takes point as he launches X-Men Gold. This is the new flagship book of the X-Men franchise, and it kicks off in fine style.
Kitty Pryde delivers a speech. The X-Men play baseball. Logan (well, okay, Old Man Logan) gets sentimental, then tries to hide it. Guggenheim fully understands that X-Men fans are a nostalgic bunch, and he’s more than happy to give us the nostalgia buzz we’ve been long for. What pleases me, though, is that Guggenheim doesn’t simply channel Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run (as I’d feared after reading X-Men: Prime). Instead, he shows familiarity with the whole X-Men franchise, with subtle nods to so many different eras.

Chicago – “The Girl On The Train” is a decent enough “Book Club” movie potboiler – it passes the time away, but never quite rises above the pulpiness of its source material. It desperately wants to recreate the suburban upper-class ennui and tone from last year’s “Gone Girl.” But while that film had David Fincher behind the camera, this one has Tate Taylor, the director of “The Help.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The film stars Emily Blunt as Rachel, an alcoholic British ex-pat sipping vodka from a water bottle, and fantasizing about the life she once led in the tony upstate New York Suburb of Ardsley-On-Hudson. She takes the train into Manhattan twice a day, staring at her ex-husband (Justin Theroux), his new wife and their daughter in the house she used to share. She also becomes obsessed with the young couple next door, Megan (Haley Bennett) and her hunky husband Scott (Luke Evans...

MaryAnn’s quick take…
An imperfect adaptation of an uncinematic novel is nevertheless a challenging portrait of a woman as deeply screwed up as usually only men get to be onscreen. I’m “biast” (pro): love Emily Blunt, desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (and I am indifferent about it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It is a sad irony that one of the underlying themes of The Girl on the Train — how women are demeaned, belittled, and infantilized as a matter of course in our culture, often to the point where we don’t even appreciate that that is what is being done to us — is reinforced by its very title. The “girl” on the train is Rachel Watson, who regularly rides the Metro-North commuter railroad into Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal and...

The Girl on the Train is a mysterious, mid-budget thriller aimed squarely at adults — in other words, it's the kind of movie Hollywood rarely makes anymore. While it does suffer from some unintentionally comedic moments, it's otherwise a pretty straightforward adaptation of Paula Hawkins' bestselling novel with its best asset being a standout performance from Emily Blunt.
Blunt plays Rachel Watson, a divorced alcoholic who rides the same train from the suburbs into Manhattan every day and becomes obsessed with a couple she sees out the window. She crafts elaborate backstories for them as she passes by, imagining their relationship as an idyllic true love to avoid the pain of thinking about how her marriage fell apart. Rachel used to live two doors down from this couple, and she can't stop herself from stealing a glance into her former house and seeing her ex's new wife and baby through...

Paula Hawkins' watercooler thriller The Girl On The Train garnered stratospheric readership upon its release back in early January 2015, the immersive page-turner rapidly became the most scintillating whodunit since Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl (to which it's frequently compared).
Every tube car, street corner and airport lounge saw a sea of nose-deep bibliophiles eagerly consuming Hakwins' source novel which eventually amassed sales of 11 million worldwide. Rattling along the idyllic outskirts of middle class suburbia (on the Metro North Line), anguished divorcee Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) silently sups from a vodka filled beaker whilst vigilantly gazing at the white picket houses of her former neighbourhood during the twice daily Manhattan commute (the locale of the film switching from London to New York).

Sinking into the film version of the Paula Hawkins bestselling mystery-thriller The Girl on the Train, the first thing you notice missing is England. That’s right, Hollywood has replaced that misty London train from which said girl thinks she witnesses sex, violence and maybe murder with a Westchester commuter express whooshing in and out of Manhattan's Grand Central Station. It's just not the same.
Luckily, director Tate Taylor (The Help), working from a intriguingly dark script by Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary), has made the best choice possible to portray Rachel Watson,...

Paula Patton’s runaway hit novel The Girl on the Train is coming to theaters, courtesy of her own adaptation and direction by Tate Taylor (the director of The Help), and the end result is three parts girl and two parts train—wreck. It’s no Gone Girl—it is entirely more predictable—but it is nonetheless a valiant effort at complex material. When the title of the piece has “girl” in it you know you’re in for aggressive, even murderous females, and this film is no exception. Fans of the book will likely find little to complain about the beautiful, even erotic portrayal of all the bad girls of the story, though you may be forgiven if you’re left to wonder what the big fuss was all about.

From the commuter train she takes every day, a lonely woman named Rachel (Emily Blunt) stares out the window and into the house of a beautiful couple, their romance a twice-daily love story offered in fragments whizzing by. Of course, the situation isn’t all it seems in that suburban home where Megan (Haley Bennett, “The Magnificent Seven”) and Scott (Luke Evans) like their sex in front of open windows, nor are things all that copacetic in the mind of Rachel, a serious alcoholic still in mourning for a busted marriage. Then there’s the case of the movie version of the.

Filtering other people’s stories through the eyes of white men is tedious and offensive, and it feels like a desperate hedge against fresh perspectives. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It’s a problem lately with lots of Hollywood movies… and some not-Hollywood movies, too. The same sorts of stories — often literally the same stories, as with reboots and remakes — are getting told over and over again, and with little apparent notion that what is required is a good reason to tell those same stories again. And here we go again.
To say that tales of Tarzan have been told before is an almost absurd understatement: he has been a mainstay of cinema since the silent era. And while The Legend of Tarzan is only very loosely based on the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs,...

Things start hot and heavy in “Queen of the South.” Bullets fly. People die. Drugs are snorted and sold. It’s clear USA wants us to know their new drama is a hard-edged show; a gritty show; a serious show. But is it a prestige drama, the accepted label for successful new entries, especially from networks new to the game? In short, no, “Queen of the South” is far from the best modern TV has to offer. But for all its amped up aesthetics, I’m not sure it even wants to be part of the club.
It certainly doesn’t want to be part of the boys’ club. Telling the story of a drug queenpin named Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga), “Queen of the South” kicks off its story via flash-forward — a wannabe shocking moment that will be easy to gloss over down the road — before delving into how a...
