Creeper2 is silly, disappointing, mundane and, more often than not, simply boring., 31 December 2003
Author: budmassey (cyberbarrister@gmail.com) from Indianapolis, IN

Writer/director Victor Salva scored with a visceral grand slam in Jeepers Creepers. It was dark, campy, scary and primal, not to mention original. He's done much better work, including the amazing Powder, an insightful and vulnerable look into the suffering visited upon people who are different, even in magically empowering ways. But as a horror movie, Creeper was a tribute to Francis Coppola's American Zoetrope studio and the tasty fare we would miss without it.

Sometime between Creeper and Creeper2, Salva and Coppola traded cinema magic for the cha-ching of a half-baked sequel, and the whole legacy of Creeper suffers for it.

It is encumbent upon any would-be sequel to maintain some degree of continuity. We expect Freddy Krueger to have the same costume, including those delightfully devilish digits. Michael Meyers has to wear that stupid mask that was never meant to make the final cut. Salva presents an entirely different Creeper in this movie, and it is a disservice to the character. He's wetter, blacker and, owing to the fact that Salva is a great fan of Creature from the Black Lagoon, derivative and dated compared to his more edgy predecessor.

The story takes far too many short cuts, like the psychic visions inexplicably given to a heretofore unpsychic cheerleader that coincidentally just happen to explain the story holes big enough to drive a school bus through.

And speaking of school buses, could we get any more cliche, or more contrived? Creeper showed us a creature who moved in a finite, but varied world, wreaking havoc in delightfully unpredictable ways. Creeper2 compresses everything but a few scenes into a broken down school bus to artificially heighten a story that better writers would have found better ways to drive.

In the end, Creeper2 is silly, disappointing, mundane and, more often than not, simply boring.
