As far as I'm concerned, Existenz has Oscar-worthy production design.
Over the years, David Cronenberg has unleashed unimaginable visions onto the big screen, stretching the limits of body horror along the way. In the week the underrated eXistenZ celebrates its 25th anniversary, I was reminded of one name that should be nearly as recognized as that of the Canadian director. After all, Cronenbergian wouldn't be the same without the contributions of Carol Spier, his hard-working production designer whose mind has birthed such sights as Videodrome's flesh-like walls and the ruined tomorrow in Crimes of the Future. This year, the duo's new collaboration, The Shrouds, will premiere at Cannes in the official competition. Maybe Spier could even take the festival's Technical Grand Prize. It'd be a nice change of pace since, despite her genius, the artist has rarely been recognized by awards voters.

The Directors of Guild of Canada unveiled nominations for its 21st Dgc Awards on Nov. 5 on Friday. Del Toro, who shot Nightmare Alley mostly in and around Toronto, did not receive a nomination for best feature film direction.
But del Toro’s tribute to the film noir genre, which starred Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, did earn Oscar-nominated production designer Tamara Deverell a Dgc Awards nod in the same category, Cam McLauchlin a nomination for feature best picture editing, and best sound editing nominations for Nathan Robitaille, Jill Purdy, Dashen Naidoo, Josh Brown, Nelson Ferreira, Kayla Stewart, Craig MacLellan and Kevin Banks.

Although one might expect David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future to deliver several cringe-inducing scenes given the festival press swirling around it, the film is actually rather subdued in terms of its adherence to the “body horror” genre generally connected with the filmmaker’s other works. That being said, while it may not be the finest example of the Cronenberg ethos, it is easily one of the more thought-provoking and interesting films of his career.
In the auteur’s latest exploration of the body politic, Cronenberg surmises that human evolution has adapted to encompass life in a synthetic environment. This has allowed some human bodies to transform and mutate (though not necessarily for identifiable or specific evolutionary purposes). Harnessing this new genetic oddity, performance artist Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), presents the metamorphosis his body undergoes as a series of “avant-garde” performances along with his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux). However,...

This review of “Crimes of the Future” was first published May 23, 2022, after its premiere at Cannes Film Festival.
It’s hard to say whether “Crimes of the Future” will be David Cronenberg’s final film — never believe a director who says they’re quitting — but it definitely feels like a closing argument, one that both reaffirms the filmmaker’s favorite themes and stylistic choices while also reflecting a shift in his point of view.
We’ve been here before with Cronenberg; his 1999 “Existenz” also had the feel of a greatest-hits collection. But for audiences starved for brash choices from one of the cinema’s boldest living provocateurs, even a rehash seems fresher than corporate-assembled, focus-group-approved content.
Should this be the Canadian auteur’s final feature, he won’t be leaving on a high note: “Crimes of the Future” won’t be remembered alongside masterpieces like “Dead Ringers,” “The Fly,” “The Brood,...

A man lies sleeping in his bed, tossing and turning. Well, “bed” doesn’t quite describe it: more like an organic cocoon cleaved in half, suspended from the ceiling by stringy, sinewy tentacles. The gent squirming around inside this pituitary gland-like pod is haggard but handsome, silver-maned, eyebrowless; if it weren’t for the matinee-idol jawline, you almost wouldn’t recognize that it’s Viggo Mortensen. “I think the bed needs new software,” he croaks to the female companion adjusting the rubbery extensions feeding into his hands. “It’s not anticipating my pain anymore.

Filming is underway in Europe on David Cronenberg’s Crimes Of The Future, starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart and Scott Speedman.
Joining the cast are Tanaya Beatty (Yellowstone), Nadia Litz (Big Muddy), Yorgos Karamichos (The Durrells), and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos (Beckett). Also previously announced were Welket Bungué (Berlin Alexanderplatz), Don McKellar (Blindness), and Lihi Kornowski (Losing Alice).
The film shoots in Athens, Greece until September 2021.
The film takes a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. The evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of ‘transhumanism’, others attempt to police it. Either way, “Accelerated Evolution Syndrome”, is spreading fast.

The sci-fi thriller sounds extremely Cronenberg-ian. According to Deadline, which broke the news, the film is set in a distant future where humans have evolved beyond their “natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup.” In this setting, a performance artist named Saul Tenser embraces Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Viggo Mortensen: Well, I’ve been trying to direct a movie from a script that I’ve written for many years. I’ve written several screenplays.

Denise Cronenberg, the sister of film director David Cronenberg and a prominent costume designer who dressed such stars as Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, and Jeremy Irons, has died. She passed May 22 at Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario, Canada at age 81 from complications of old age.
“We would put on plays in our house for the neighborhood and they were always instigated by Denise,” said David Cronenberg, age 77. “She was always a performer, which certainly later helped her with her work in terms of understanding actors and performances.”
Denise’s first first film as David’s costume designer was the 1986 remake of The Fly, starring Jeff Goldblum.

David Cronenberg swaps his venereal ick-monsters for Samantha Eggar's mater furiosa, an annihilating female who commits her killings as would the villain of a Greek tragedy -- through her offspring. Oliver Reed is the new-age guru of 'Psychoplasmics,' who teaches Eggar to direct her rage in an utterly unique way. The disturbing concept sounds less preposterous when one finds out it was written in response to a brutal divorce experience. Hell hath no fury. Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson star in thriller from director of The Others and The Sea Inside.
Regression, the sixth film from feted Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar (The Sea Inside) will open the San Sebastian Film Festival (Sept 18-26) on September 18.
Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson star in the anticipated thriller in which a father is accused of a sexual assault he has no memory of committing.
Regression, also written by Amenabar, will play out of competition.
In an interview with ScreenDaily, Amenabar’s regular producer Fernando Bovaira (The Others) said of the world-premiere berth: “Alejandro has been in every A- list festival but never in San Sebastian. When they asked us, we just coudn’t say no. Under Rebordinos’ [festival director Jose Luis Rebordinos] watch, we have all seen the festival grow its international impact so we are very happy to be the opening film”.

It has been a long decade since Chilean director Alejandro Amenabar's last theatrical feature, Foreign Language Oscar winner "The Sea Inside." Now, he will finally revisit the bleak, genre-driven territory that first defined his career -- from 1997's "Abre Los Ojos" to 2001's ravishingly beautiful ghost story "The Others" -- with his next film, "Regression." Starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, and also written by Amenabar, "Regression" turns on a detective (Hawke) whose investigation of a young girl's (Emma Watson) gravely serious accusations against her father (David Dencik) unearths a powerfully scary conspiracy. Hawke's Detective Bruce Kenner is aided by a psychologist (David Thewlis) who performs regression therapy on the father, also uncovering more unhappy memories. Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up: David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars." The director: David Cronenberg (Canadian, 71 years old). I don't think I exactly need to introduce Cronenberg, unless your auteur radar extends only to directors who have been nominated for Oscars. The cinema's currently dormant king of body horror has shifted in and out of genres and levels of respectability, his previous 20 features taking him from shoestring kink ("Stereo") to more elaborate gross-out cult items ("Videodrome") to warped mainstream fare ("The Fly") to icy arthouse provocations ("Crash") to tastefully cerebral prestige items ("A Dangerous Method"), with any number of stages in between.

In Part 1 of our Carrie set visit report, we heard from director Kimberly Peirce and star Chloe Moretz regarding their thoughts on the upcoming retelling of the classic Stephen King novel.
We also discussed what they both did to prepare for the project, working with Julianne Moore and much more in regards to their experiences during production.
For this portion of our set visit interviews, we were able to sit down with several of the Carrie co-stars including Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell and Ansel Engort. In Peirce's film Greer is portraying well-meaning educator Miss Desjardin, and during her roundtable chat she discussed how her character is really the catalyst for all the tragedy that happens in Carrie. Doubleday (who was fantastic in the recent indie thriller K-11) chatted about what we can expect from resident mean girl Chris Hargensen in Screen Gems’ upcoming production, and newcomers Russell and...

Last August Dread Central had the opportunity to head up to Toronto, Canada, to visit the set of Screen Gems' upcoming remake of Carrie, and here's Part 1 of our Set Report.
Carrie is a project that first piqued our interest because of the studio's intriguing choice of director for the project: Kimberly Peirce. Peirce is a storyteller not necessarily known for her horror prowess, but she is a filmmaker who has the ability to masterfully tackle challenging and often thought-provoking material alongside some of her more seasoned peers. Her feature film debut was the Oscar-nominated drama Boys Don't Cry, which made people quickly forget that Hilary Swank was also The Next Karate Kid, and her stunning follow-up, the 2008 war-themed drama Stop-Loss, proved that then up-and-coming actor Channing Tatum was more than some kid who could dance.
As she's clearly someone who knows how to bring out the best in rising talent,...
