Rutger Hauer, the Dutch actor best known for portraying the tragic villain Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic “Blade Runner,” died following a short illness. He was 75.
His website, the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association, announced the news Wednesday. Hauer’s managers, as well as his agent Steve Kenis, also confirmed his passing to TheWrap and added that a funeral was held for Hauer on Wednesday morning.
Hauer starred opposite Harrison Ford as the ruthless replicant Roy Batty in “Blade Runner” in 1982 after making his American film debut in 1981 with Sylvester Stallone in “Nighthawks.” The actor subsequently appeared in several ’80s action and adventure hits like “Ladyhawke,” “Flesh+Blood,” “The Hitcher” and “Wanted: Dead or Alive.” He also won a Golden Globe for his work in the TV movie “Escape from Sobibor,” about a commandant at a death camp in World War II.

Oscar-nominated film editor behind the slow-motion sequences of sprinters in Chariots of Fire
Slow-motion opening and closing sequences showing British sprinters running barefoot along West Sands beach in St Andrews combined with Vangelis’s inspirational score helped the 1981 film Chariots of Fire win four Oscars. Terry Rawlings, who has died aged 85, gained an Oscar nomination for his work as film editor, crafting those sequences – and other slowed-down race scenes – from thousands of feet of footage.
“At that time, you had all these fantastic films with all this wonderful footage of the people running and we’re basically going to show the same kind of stuff all over again,” explained Rawlings. “I thought: ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to show these things like a ballet with these great long dissolves [fading from one image to another]?’ So I tried that and it worked.”...

Friday, May 25th, 1979. A cinema anniversary I celebrate every year with a screening of Ridley Scott’s Alien.
Since my initial revisiting of the movie in 2014 for the 35th anniversary, 20th Century Fox continues the franchise with more prequels including Alien Covenant in 2017 (Trailer), and more to follow in the timeline leading audiences right up to Alien. Prometheus (2012) starred Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba, was well received by critics and subsequently a box office hit.
The marketing of Covenant invoked spine-tingling chills when the initial posters were released. The tagline from the 1979 film, “In space no one can hear you scream” is still foreboding, but “Run” and Hide” with images of the Xenomorph and Egg were terrifying and a warning of whats to come.
Fans have seen the birth of Alien Day, celebrated on April 26 and a new Aliens story with the recent comic book series “Aliens: Dust to Dust.

Jerry Goldsmith was already a veteran film composer with numerous iconic scores under his belt by the time he was enlisted to work on Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979). He’d worked in radio and television through the 1950s, contributing music to classic shows such as The Twilight Zone (1959) and Perry Mason (1959) before making the move to film, writing scores for films as diverse in subject matter (and sound) as Stagecoach (1966) and Planet of the Apes (1968) in the 1960s and Chinatown (1974) and The Omen (1976) in the 1970s. Goldsmith’s rich orchestral scores for such films, which were informed and influenced by early 20th century modernist composers, are both experimental and economical in their use and development of thematic material. He explained, “What I really try to do is to take one simple motif of the material for the picture, and a broad theme, and construct it so they always can work...

Sci-fi thriller Morgan, which hits theatres this Friday, marks the directorial debut of Luke Scott and takes a look at what happens when an artificially created humanoid being, genetically altered and DNA enhanced, begins to think and act out on its own.
The plot explores some touchy moral areas about creating synthetic life, as it focuses on an AI named Morgan (Anya Taylor-Joy) who grows to young adulthood in just five years and begins to realize her strengths and her need to have more freedom, which leads to an attack on one of the scientists who created her.
The big guns funding the “experiment” send in a corporate risk-management consultant, Lee Weathers (Kate Mara), to decide whether or not to terminate the “project.” Problem is, the scientists have grown fond of Morgan and think of her as a young woman rather than an “it” and so try to justify her...

For the first time ever, Donald Cammell’s obscure 1987 serial killer thriller White of the Eye is available on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States (the UK arm of Arrow Video brandished its own striking package of the title in early 2014). Director of only four features, including his iconic 1970 debut Performance (co-directed by Nicolas Roeg), Cammell’s quartet of features were all labors of love, the filmmaker undergoing significant set backs on each project up until his death following 1995’s Wild Side.
With seven to ten years in-between each outing, this feature marked the end of a decade long hiatus following 1977’s adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel Demon Seed starring Julie Christie. Adapting from an obscure novel by brothers Laurence and Andrew Klavan (a notable writer of mystery thrillers) writing under the pseudonym Margaret Tracy, Cammell’s wife and actress China Kong co-wrote the screenplay. Director Robert Mandel's F/X is one of the most entertaining and compulsively watchable thrillers of 1986. I originally caught up with it on VHS and, while I was impressed with the film, the ending I found to be both hokey and frustrating, mostly due to the completely out-of-place 1982 song “Just an Illusion” by Imagination that plays over the end credits. I felt that it undermined all that preceded it. However, like William Friedkin's To Live and Die in La (1985) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986), F/X is a film that would only grow on me after subsequent repeated viewings. I learned to forgive the inclusion of this song as the final minutes should really be viewed as a visual pun on the film’s overall theme, which begs the question “What is real and what is fiction?”

Now this is a list that could result in a lot of fascinating dissection and thanks to HitFix it comes to our attention almost three years after it was originally released back in 2012, celebrating the Motion Picture Editors Guild's 75th anniversary. Over at HitFix, Kris Tapley asks, "Is this news to anyone elsec" Um, yes, I find it immensely interesting and a perfect starting point for anyone looking to further explore the art of film editing. In an accompanying article we get the particulars concerning what films were eligible and how films were to be considered: In our Jan-feb 12 issue, we asked Guild members to vote on what they consider to be the Best Edited Films of all time. Any feature-length film from any country in the world was eligible. And by "Best Edited," we explained, we didn't just mean picture; sound, music and mixing were to be considered as well.

A random bit of researching on a Tuesday night led me to something I didn't know existed: The Motion Picture Editors Guild's list of the 75 best-edited films of all time. It was a feature in part celebrating the Guild's 75th anniversary in 2012. Is this news to anyone else? I confess to having missed it entirely. Naturally, I had to dig in. What was immediately striking to me about the list — which was decided upon by the Guild membership and, per instruction, was considered in terms of picture and sound editorial as opposed to just the former — was the most popular decade ranking. Naturally, the 1970s led with 17 mentions, but right on its heels was the 1990s. I wouldn't have expected that but I happen to agree with the assessment. Thelma Schoonmaker's work on "Raging Bull" came out on top, an objectively difficult choice to dispute, really. It was so transformative,...

Alien and Aliens are classics. But how do the other sequels, prequel and spin-offs compare? We try to rank them in descending order...
Ranking any franchise is a personal and difficult process, but the Alien series represents its own challenges. Were you more affected by the intimate shocks of the 1979 original, or the more action-led 1986 sequel? Were you impressed by Alien 3's commitment to its bleak tone, or irked by its soupy darkness?
You're sure to have your own opinions as to how the Alien movies should be ranked, though we'd wager that, like us, you'd place the Alien Vs Predator spin-offs quite far down the list. But then there's Ridley Scott's prequel, Prometheus, a film some might rank far above Jean-Pierre Jeunet's quirky Alien Resurrection, and perhaps even David Fincher's Alien 3.

A BAFTA event highlighted editor Terry Rawlings' work on such films as Alien and Blade Runner. We take a look at a unique industry talent...
The bowels of the Nostromo meander seemingly without end. Brett, the vessel’s monosyllabic engineer, is searching the dimly-lit corridors and echoing atriums for Jones, a missing tabby cat. But here among the pipes and dank, dangling chains, a much larger and deadlier predator lurks. We haven’t seen it yet, and Brett's currently unaware of it, but we can sense that it’s waiting here somewhere in the shadows.
This, of course, is Alien, Ridley Scott’s seminal outer space nightmare. The scene sketched out above is an example of why the film has endured: it’s cut to a tense, prowling rhythm, uncannily - and appropriately - like a deadly creature waiting to strike.
One of the key elements in achieving that predatory rhythm was Terry Rawlings,...

On Friday, director Ridley Scott arrived in Sydney, Australia, reportedly to scout for locations for Prometheus 2.
Prometheus (2012) starred Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba, was well received by critics and subsequently a box office hit. The sequel is scheduled for a release in March 2016.
I’ll bet Scott never thought in a million years that he’d be scouting locations for another Alien movie almost 35 years to the day after the original hit theaters.
Jump back to opening weekend… May 25, 1979. “In space no one can hear you scream”
I was a 12 year girl when my mother, after much pleading, took me to the Showcase Cinemas in East Hartford, Ct on that Friday night. These were the days prior to the words “spoilers” and “internet” when audiences went into a film blind and when parents didn’t take their children to R rated movies.

The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.
Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.
Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.

Prometheus is Ridley Scott‘s latest magnum opus, a groundbreaking cinematic achievement beyond our wildest imaginations. At least that’s what we’re all hoping for with the film. At the very least we’ll take a return to the sci-fi terror Scott unleashed on audiences earlier in his career, but Prometheus is a film moviegoers all over will be talking about. We’d love to hear Scott talk about it, probably along with screenwriter Damen Lindelof. We’ll take Jon Spaihts just because he comes with the package deal, but it’ll be a commentary that delves into the depths each man had to go to craft yet another legendary, sci-fi tale. That will be amazing. Anyway, here’s the commentary for Alien. Seriously, though. How can you introduce Alien? Alien (2003 Director’s Cut, originally released in 1979) commentators: Ridley Scott (director), Sigourney Weaver (actress), Ronald Shusett (executive producer/story by), John Hurt (actor), Dan O’Bannon...

"We all sat there and decided to make a china cup, a beautiful, delicate china cup. You can't tell me we should have made a beer mug." --David Fincher on making Alien 3
David Fincher's Alien 3 (1992) has become somewhat infamous, thanks mostly to how it illustrates how creative differences behind the camera affect the end product (to say nothing about how the film alienated---pun intended---fans of James Cameron's Aliens by killing off the beloved characters of Hicks and Newt during the opening sequence). Essentially, the film began production on the whim of a release date: May 22nd 1992. Seven million dollars were allegedly spent before filming began, as the unfinished script ran through a gauntlet of writers (including cyberpunk writer William Gibson) and, directorially, the project was handed off from Renny Harlin to first-timer David Fincher (who began his career as a technician for Industrial Light and...

As news of a new Blade Runner movie arrives, Ryan wonders whether a worthy sequel or prequel could ever be made…
I'll start by stating the obvious: Blade Runner was a one-off, never-to-be-repeated classic. It was a movie where finances, creative talent and serendipity all came together to produce, not just one of the finest science fiction movies of all time, but one of the most startlingly inventive films ever to come out of Hollywood.
Blade Runner was made at a time when its director was at the height of his creative powers. Fresh from his box office success with Alien, Ridley Scott poured his energies into an adaptation of Philip K Dick's Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, and he probably hasn't made a film as individual or beautiful to behold since.
The same could be said of Vangelis, whose woozy, eclectic score for Blade Runner is inarguably the...

Finally, one of the box-sets we’ve all been waiting for! The Alien franchise is one of those series that’s perfect for Blu-Ray. It is a benchmark for the format and you can check out our full review of The Alien Anthology below.
Alien:
How much can one say about the timeless classic sci-fi horror film that hasn’t been said before? Well, very little. This is still Ridley Scott‘s finest film to date and it hasn’t aged a bit. Every beat of tension still lands with a punch, the alien is still one of the best ever to be put on-screen, and it’s atmosphere stays eerie and unsettling throughout.
Alien is the king of the monster movies. Very few horror films can achieve the level of investment Scott and co. did with making you actually care for the ensemble, even outside of Ripley. What...

Let’s level with each other: you’ve already seen all of the (or at least the first two) Alien films, and have formed an opinion roughly in alignment with the rest of society that the first two in the series are excellent, but that the latter two were largely ruined by a combination of repetitiveness and studio interference. You probably already have the Alien Quadrilogy, and have ample resources to find out what new supplemental materials are featured on this release (and they are legion). But as much as anything, you don’t need me to tell you what each of these films is about, what characters appear in any of them, and why you should go out of your way to see any of them. The Alien franchise is established in a way that few are, with its rules, aesthetic, and central themes renowned to those who have...

The much-anticipated Alien Anthology Blu-Ray set doesn't hit virtual and real store shelves until October 26th, but 20th-Century Fox, continuing the marketing push begun in earnest last week at San Diego Comic-Con, has released the Comic-Con trailer to their online store. They've also released a second, brief trailer that explains how the limited edition "Egg Package" works. As expected, the limited edition is more expensive than the Blu-Ray collection, but fans of the Alien franchise (yes, even fans like me who have little to no interest in revisiting the third and fourth entries) will be pleased by 20th-Century Fox's all-out effort to create a unique, home-viewing experience.
