Ah, Christmas! While the notion of peace of earth and goodwill towards men makes this the warmest time of the year, Christmas isn’t always so cozy on the silver screen. Many of our favourite action flicks use the holidays as a backdrop, with some of them using the yuletide setting to add an extra layer of hopelessness to the proceedings – I’m looking at you, First Blood. Another Blue Christmas classic is director Martin McDonagh’s first feature-length film, In Bruges, a darkly comic character study of two hitmen on the run who set up shop in a titular quaint city in Belgium. The two hitmen are beautifully played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, whose pairing was so potent that McDonagh retimed them 14 years later for The Banshees of Inisherin.
In this one, Colin Farrell plays a conscience-stricken young hitman named Ray, who’s suicidal after accidentally killing...

Martin McDonagh’s cult hit man feature comes to 4K looking extremely good: fans of low-key black humor and droll sentimentality, kinda-like-the-Coens, kinda-like-Tarantino, love this picture. Cute characterizations from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson & Ralph Fiennes bring light to a ‘killers with a heart’ story. It keeps us watching to see what happens next, that’s for sure. And when’s the last time that 13th century European art and architecture figured so heavily in a mob saga?

Sweet Child of Mine: Basinger Buoys Bizarre Psycho Drama
Danish director Anders Morgenthaler (Princess, 2006) returns with The 11th Hour, a strange, psychological drama with the kind of art-house sensibilities that could easily be mistaken for Eurotrash. A German-Danish co-production starring American actress Kim Basinger, there’s more bizarre elements on display than the simplistic yet frustratingly equivocal title can rightly handle.
Slight otherworldly elements and one woman’s insane quest for motherhood offer up an uneasy narrative many will either dismiss outright or react unkindly towards, at least as displayed in this consistently repellant universe. And yet, despite some distractions and flaws, Morgenthaler offers a unique portrait of hysterical motherhood. Though its heroine remains woefully superficial, defined completely by her consuming desire, Basinger is arresting in a film that seems oblivious to all elements audiences hold dear in these unnerving psychological studies.
Maria (Basinger), we learn the quiet, childlike whispers...

"We need to start something new." We haven't seen Basinger that much recently. Zentropa has debuted an early trailer for Anders Morgenthaler's drama/suspense film I Am Here, starring Oscar winner Kim Basinger along with Peter Stormare (22 Jump Street, Bad Milo, Pain & Gain), Jordan Prentice (In Bruges, Mirror Mirror) and Sebastian Schipper (Run Lola Run, Three). The film is about a woman (Basinger) who really wants to have a baby, but can't do so, and sets off on a quest to do something about it only ending up in what seems to be a very messed up situation. While it seems like your standard drama, there's some very interesting quirks to it, like the tiny glowing girl that talks in her ear. Yea I know – what?! Watch the new international trailer for Anders Morgenthaler's I Am Here, found via The Movie Box: Anders Morgenthaler's drama world premiered...

Hovering around the twenty-one to twenty-four feature film mark with at least a quarter of those films belonging to first time filmmakers, the Quinzaine des Realisateurs (a.k.a Directors’ Fortnight) has in the past couple of years, counted on a healthy supply of French, Spanish and Belgium produced film items, and has been geared towards the offbeat genre items as with last year’s edition curated by Edouard Waintrop and co. To be unveiled on the 22nd, as we attempted with our Critics’ Week predix, Blake Williams, Nicholas Bell and I (Eric Lavallee) are thinking out loud and hedging our bets on what the section might look like or what the programmers might be looking at for 2014. Here is our predictions overview:

Director: Anders Morgenthaler
Writer: Anders Morgenthaler
Producers: Marie Gade Denessen, Julie Lind-Holm
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Kim Basinger, Jordan Prentice, Peter Stormare
While his 2006 film, Princess, starring Thure Lindhardt, received a great deal of attention after premiering in the Director’s Fortnight sidebar at Cannes, Anders Morgenthaler’s 2007 sophomore feature, Echo (with Kim Bodnia) never received theatrical release outside of Denmark. After working in television since then, he’s completed his third film feature, dealing with infant prostitution in Eastern Europe. And starring Kim Basinger. Come now, that sounds absolutely delectable. While the original title, Petit was preferable to the generic sounding I’m Here, this sounds like an excellent offbeat showcase for the beautiful Basinger, and we see Peter Stormare is once again part of Morgenthaler’s cast. This could go either way, but it’s definitely a project high on our radar.

There is one catastrophic ending, but from multiple perspectives.
“The Power of Few” is told from different viewpoints leading up to a catastrophic in New Orleans. Several off-beat characters are either witnesses or victims to the ultimate demise of a drive-by shooting, a car crash and a convenience store robbery in that order.
The first viewpoint is about Cory (Devon Gearhart) who must go down to the convenience store to acquire medicine, but lacked the money to pay the pregnant proprietor Mala (Moon Bloodgood) and her aspiring actor/husband Shane (Derek Richardson).
Then the film shoots off to two government agents Clyde and Marti (Christian Slater and Nicky Whelan) in a taxi cab seeking out a possible terrorist and bomb in New Orleans.
Another perspective is from a motorcycle deliverywoman Alexa (Q’orianka Kilcher) hired to deliver a package, but saves Dom (Jesse Bradford) from assassination by local thugs Junkshow...

Written and directed by Leone Marucci, this picture follows six different points of view unfolding on one sunny New Orleans afternoon, spanning twenty minutes of time, where each segment eventually intersects in one climactic moment where criminals and a high profile religious based heist collide.
Living in squalor with his hopped up mom (Louise Linton, Lions For Lambs) and baby brother, Cory (Devon Gearhart, Funny Games) decides that he must acquire medicine for his ailing brother, and thus takes off on a mission to rob The Space Bar, an internet café/grocery store run by the pregnant Mala (Moon Bloodgood, Terminator Salvation). Mala has been arguing with husband Shane (Derek Richardson, Hostel) about his aspiring acting career. Meanwhile, undercover agents Clyde (Christian Slater, True Romance) and Marti (Nicky Whelan, Halloween II) are on the hunt for a suspect that may have recently stolen the Shroud of Turin from the Vatican,...

Meaningless Affect: Marucci’s Interactive Film Project a Dreadful Observation of Social Awareness
Moments into Leone Marucci’s incomprehensibly obnoxious new film, The Power of Few should have one pondering not only how some of the notable cast members signed onto the film but how this received funding in the first place. Assaulting the senses like a New Orleans set Crash (2005) meeting indefinably interconnected drek of something like Answers to Nothing (2011), this amateur circus of poorly conceived nonsense may have been borne out of good intentions, but only serves to reinforce the notion of what path they pave. Developed by writer/director Marucci and producer/star Q’orianka Kilcher as an interactive project meant to involve a global audience, where online voters were able to determine casting, costumes, location, editing, and story development, results in what feels like the product of Communism on filmmaking. “God save us from the innocent and the good,...

I'm not sure what in the hell is going on in this trailer for The Power of Few, but one thing I do know is that Christopher Walken wants to clone Jesus. This is such a crazy weird trailer, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a drama or a comedy, or what, but it's some kind of crime thriller.
Synopsis:
Spies, cops, holy fools and well-armed children cross paths on a day of danger, mystery and possible transformation. "The Power of Few" unfolds through the lives of five unusual characters who unknowingly are connected to an extraordinary smuggling operation on a day when religious conspiracy and urban crime collide.
This doesn't even seem like a movie! But, it is, and it was directed by Leone Marucci. It also has an impressive cast of actors that includes Christian Slater, Anthony Anderson, Jesse Bradford, Q'orianka Kilcher, Moon Bloodgood, Nicky Whelan,...

Given that for most people reading this website, Christmas brings with it the coldest and most treacherous of outdoor experiences, it’s little wonder that cinema plays such a big part of the holiday season. Families gathering in their warmly lit living rooms next to the tree and watching classic films of heartwarming sentiment or epic scale is as much a part of common tradition as gift opening or alcohol fuelled social faux pas. While for the Us the classic is It’s a Wonderful Life and over here in the rocky United Kingdom it’s The Great Escape, we all have our quintessential Xmas movie looping every year at the same time ad nauseam. ‘Tis the season for such folly, after all.

Nothing more satisfying than a good solid confession, unless of course it’s your own confession – then it kind of sucks. What’s great about films is that there’s never a boring confession; no one ever spends 120 minutes of movie watching to learn that the hero was the one who accidently dented his neighbor’s car. So – here are some confessions in films that, because of the performance or the situation, stood out amongst the rest. Oh also, by definition alone the following is practically all spoilers – so heads up. 10. Ray – In Bruges It’s the only confession scene on this list that actually takes place in a confessional – and the reason it’s here is because that, while our main man Ray has nothing to actually confess at the beginning of the session, that sure changes fast – and not in the way he intended. In Bruges went under a lot of radars, but...

New Mirror Mirror movie delivered kidlike fun, storyline seemed very flat & more. Relativity Media released their half-baked Snow White flick "Mirror Mirror" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and,in my personal opinion,it was very, very flat. However, I think that it is good for the kids. I think that's what they were shooting for. If it wasn't,they really messed up. I can't believed this movie was ever being compared to the upcoming "Snow White and the Huntsman" flick with Kristen Stewart. It won't even compare, plus it's for a more adult audience. Mirror Mirror stars: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Robert Emms, Mare Winningham, Michael Lerner, Mark Povinelli, Jordan Prentice, Danny Woodburn, Sebastian Saraceno, Ronald Lee Clark, Martin Klebba, Joey Gnoffo, and Sean Bean. I find it absolutely impossible not to be drawn in by Tarsem Singh's visuals. The guy knows how to paint an optical feast and on the heels of Immortals, The Fall and The Cell, his kid-targeted Snow White tale, Mirror Mirror, is no different. And as far as general audiences are concerned, it may to be his most accessible feature yet.
Accompanying all its scenic splendor, Mirror Mirror is an innocent, farcical take on the story of Snow White without devolving into annoying slapstick. As far as I can tell it seems to hit most of the typical plot points of an evil queen attempting to kill the "fairer" princess who eventually falls in love with the dashing prince, enter the seven dwarfs and yadda, yadda, yadda... the end. When it comes to the story, you're already lockstep and in line. Having never read the classic Grimm brothers' fairy...

Critics agree the Snow White adaptation is 'not the fairest of them all.'

Before it even hit the box office, "Mirror Mirror" was viewed with a critical eye as two Snow White adaptations had announced their release dates a month apart. But with the release of the trailers, it was clear that the two movies were very different. The Tarsem Singh film is a quirky comedy from the vantage point of the Evil Queen (Julia Roberts) over the traditional Snow White (Lily Collins), while "Snow White and the Huntsman" is about the epic battle Snow White (Kristen Stewart) must fight for her life. Unfortunately for those involved in the former, as the reviews pour in, it's obvious the movie is making critics grumpy.

Title: Mirror Mirror Directed By: Tarsem Singh Starring: Julia Robert, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Jordan Prentice, Mark Povinelli, Joe Gnoffo, Danny Woodburn, Sebastian Saraceno, Martin Klebba, Ronald Lee Clark In Tarsem Singh I still trust. No, his films may not be the best of the best, but you can always count on Singh to wholly embrace whatever he’s working on, push the limits and, in turn, make it his own. In the vain of the beloved fairytale, Mirror Mirror tells the story of Snow White (Lily Collins). After losing her father, the King, she’s got no choice, but to live with her stepmother, the Queen (Julia Robert), who, [ Read More ]...

"Mirror Mirror" is the latest in a long line of Snow White stories -- "Once Upon A Time" on ABC is ongoing, as is the saga of Snow White and her Fabletown cohorts in the graphic novel series "Fables," with the film "Snow White and the Huntsman" not far behind. The Tarsem Singh-directed film, however, is the most kid-friendly of the bunch, with the evil queen character played for laughs by Julia Roberts. Even if this film only has a touch of the dark side, its stars Lily Collins and Armie Hammer insist "Mirror Mirror" is more modern, because Snow White learns to fight for herself, her prince, and her people. "Our Snow White has no huntsman," Hammer noted, "but it's an over-the-top family comedy. We're not trying to make 'Grapes of Wrath' here." And because it's a Singh film, the visuals are everything, as the two leads and...

We wouldn't be the first to admit that the first trailer for Relativity Media's Mirror Mirror was a little disappointing. More of a comedic adventure than its live-action Snow White rival, Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman, the jokes in Mirror Mirror's trailer seemed mostly stale and uninspired and the movie lacked the visual feast usually associated with director Tarsem Singh (Immortals).
After releasing a sneak peak featurette only days ago (and pushing the release date back two weeks), Relativity is looking to improve on its previous effort with a new international trailer, which focuses more on the adventure aspect of the movie as Snow White (Lily Collins) learns some fighting techniques from the seven dwarves (Mark Povinelli, Jordan Prentice, Danny Woodburn, Martin Klebba, Sebastian Saraceno, Ronald Lee Clark, and Joey Gnoffo) in order to battle the Evil Queen (Julia Roberts).

It seemed like Tarsem Singh would have been the perfect director to bring the story of Snow White to life as a live action film. Unfortunately I don't think his film Mirror Mirror looks very good at all. Lily Collins may look great as the character Snow White, but this comedic version of the tale simply just isn't interesting to me.
Collins had this to say about her character,
She is modernized and doesn't stay a victim. She can take control of her destiny and is the princess saving the prince.
The story follows the exiled princess who enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright and Julia Roberts as an evil Queen who steals control of a kingdom, in a magical adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over. The film also stars Armie Hammer...

Did you know Julia Roberts stars in Tarsem Singh’s Snow White movie, Mirror, Mirror? If not, I’m sure the new posters will clue you in on that tiny detail. The question is, does Roberts mind having her face associated with this fairy tale turd?
Maybe it’s a contract thing because I would want to distance myself from this spectacular mess as much as possible. Did you see the trailer? I know this isn’t supposed to rival Snow White and the Huntsman but come on. I’ve seen animated shows that look more realistic than this thing.
Lily Collins, who plays Snow White, actually gets a little face time in one of the new promos but the studio obviously wants to push this as a Julia Roberts vehicle. My, how far has the former Pretty Woman fallen?
I guess it’s possible the movie might actually surprise me…...

Unfortunately the Tarsem Singh directed Snow White film Mirror Mirror looks like crap. At least that's my opinion, maybe there are some of you out there that actually think the movie looks good, but for me it just comes off as being rushed and cheap. I've seen better fantasy films on the SyFy channel. If you haven't seen the trailer for the movie yet, check it out below so you can decide for yourself.
Relativity Media has released these first two posters for the film that really don't do anything for me. There is nothing cool about them. They were basically created to sell the fact that Julia Roberts is the film's star, but I'm not sure how much star power Roberts even has anymore these days. I've always liked watching Roberts in her films, but it seems like her star is beginning to fade as well. This film just doesn't look good,...

The first trailer for director Tarsem Singh's Snow White film Mirror Mirror has been released today, and I don't think it's what you were expecting. In fact after having watched the trailer I'm surprised as hell that it came from the same guy who directed The Cell, The Fall, and Immortals. This film definitley looks like it was rushed through production. I honestly didn't expect to say this because I was looking forward to it, but Mirror Mirror looks like a very mediocre film with cheap laughs. It looks like something we might see on a SyFy channel original movie. I'm truly disappointed, I was expecting something much much better.
I heard it was going to have comedic elements, but I didn't think it was going to go this far. It looks like they were working with a terrible script, and every bit of comedy element thrown into this trailer falls flat for me.

Lily Collins, Mirror Mirror: Snow White and Seven Dwarves Mark Povinelli, Jordan Prentice, Danny Woodburn, Sebastian Saraceno, Ronald Lee Clark, Martin Klebba, Joe Gnoffo Tarsem Singh's Snow White project for Relativity Media has finally been baptized: Mirror Mirror. Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, and Armie Hammer star as, respectively, Snow White, the Evil Queen, and Prince Charming. Making things a bit confusing, Universal's rival Snow White movie, Snow White and the Huntsman, stars Kristen Stewart, Liam Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron as, respectively, Snow White, the Huntsman, and the Evil Queen. According to various images showing Collins as Snow White, she looks precious little like Disney's poisoned-apple-eating heroine. Directed by Rupert Sanders, Kristen Stewart's Snow White is even further out there, having more in common with Joan of Arc or Mia Wasikowska's armor-wearing Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. After some dancing around, release dates were set for both films.

Julia Roberts will play the evil Queen who steals control of Snow White’s kingdom, with Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as the object of the two battling women’s affection, Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen. Mirror Mirror stars Lily Collins (The Blind Side) as an exiled princess who enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright and Oscar-winner Julia Roberts as an evil Queen who steals control of a kingdom, in a magical adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over. The film also stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the object of their affection, Prince Andrew Alcott,...

For the longest time (even with filming going on) we've all had to refer to Tarsem Singh's upcoming Snow White film, as Untitled Snow White Project, or Tarsem's Snow White. Relativity Media has now announced the official title.
Seriously...It was getting to the point where I was beginning to think the film would actually be called Tarsem's Snow White. They didn't seem in any rush to change or announce a title, and on the whole, I didn't think that'd necessarily be a bad thing either. But Relativity has put a stop to that now by sending our a press release for the new title: Mirror Mirror.
Those of you that are familiar with the Snow White tale probably recognize this as the phrase the Evil Queen utters to get the magic mirror to work. Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about it. It gets the point across,...

Isn't it pretty? Snow White surrounded by her seven dwarves? Relativity Media has released new images of their still-untitled "Snow White" project starring "The Blind Side's" Lily Collins in the title role and Julia Roberts as the ultra-fierce Evil Queen.
This one will stay true to the spirit of the Brothers Grimm fable but with a decidedly more edgy take with vengeance at its heart. Snow White is looking for revenge after her evil stepmother kills her father. So who does she call for help? The seven dwarves of course! By the way, the seven little people with big hearts will be played by Jordan Prentice, Joey Gnoffo, Sabastian Saraceno, Martin Klebba, Mark Provinelli and Ronald Lee Clark.
I'm sure the dwarves will not be called Sneezy, Sleepy, Dopey, Doc, Happy, Bashful, and Grumpy.
"The Social Network's" Armie Hammer (gosh, I'm really getting tired of always using that...
