Two urbanite screen obsessives head to the countryside to cure their digital addictions in this social-issue yarn that is light on the laughs
The title of this relationship comedy refers to a digital detox; but, watching it, the only unplugging you might be tempted to do is yanking the plug out of the mains socket. It’s an almost entirely unfunny comedy from Debra Neil-Fisher, who edited the Hangover movies and makes her directing debut lumbered with a stinker of a script; it’s not smart enough to work as a grownup relationship movie, and laughs are too few for a proper comedy.
To be fair, there’s a relaxed chemistry between Eva Longoria and Matt Walsh playing husband and wife: she plays workaholic control freak Jeanine who does something high up in property development while her husband Dan (played by Walsh) recently quit his career in marketing to start...

"How are you not freaked out by any of this?" Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for Unplugging, a fun comedy marking the directorial debut of film editor Debra Neil-Fisher. Another city-people-go-to-a-rural-area-and-try-to-survive movies they stopped making (apparently not?). To revive their marriage and reconnect, a couple (played by Eva Longoria & Matt Walsh) takes a self-prescribed digital detox weekend to a remote town. What starts out as a perfect weekend getaway without technology quickly spirals out of control, forcing them to discover the only way home is to rely on each other. This was shot last year during the pandemic. "It was a weird time when we shot this, but it was beautiful in Oklahoma... It was a small crew. It was really me [Eva] and Matt, most of the movie, and Lea, who pops in and is hilarious and funny... We are like Frick and Frack. We really fed off...

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to the comedy Unplugging, starring Eva Longoria (Sylvie’s Love), Matt Walsh (Veep), Lea Thompson (J. Edgar), Keith David (Greenleaf) and Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), with plans to release it in theaters nationwide next spring.
In the feature directorial debut of veteran film editor Debra Neil-Fisher, husband and wife Dan (Walsh) and Jeanine (Longoria) plan a weekend getaway of “digital detox” without kids, phones, or social media. Johnny Pemberton (Superstore), Al Madrigal (Morbius), Joel Kim Booster (Sunnyside), and Nancy Friedrich (Pen15) round out the cast of the film, scripted by Walsh and Brad Morris.

English-born film editor Anne V. Coates, who won an Academy Award for cutting David Lean’s classic “Lawrence of Arabia,” has died. She was 92.
She earned that 1963 Oscar: In addition to its impressive balance of imposing desert landscapes and vivid human drama (culled from some 31 miles of footage), the nearly four-hour epic contains one of the most famous “match” cuts in movie history, from a shot of Peter O’Toole blowing out a match to a majestic desert sunrise.
Coates went on to receive four more Academy Award nominations, for editing Peter Glenville’s “Becket” (1964), David Lynch’s “The Elephant Man” (1980), Wolfgang Petersen’s “In the Line of Fire” (1993) and Steven Soderbergh’s “Out of Sight” (1988).
Her other credits include “Young Cassidy” (1965), “The Bofors Gun” (1968), “The Public Eye” (1972), “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974), “What About Bob?” (1991), “Chaplin” (1992), “Congo” (1995), “Striptease” (1996) and Soderbergh’s “Erin Brockovich” (2000).

It’s been two years. Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are happily living uneventful lives at home. Tattoos have been lasered off, files purged. The last they heard from disaster-magnet Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong), he’d been tossed into a Thai prison and, with him out of the way, the guys have very nearly recovered from their nights prowling the seamy side of Las Vegas in a roofie’d haze, and being kidnapped, shot at, and chased by drug-dealing mobsters in Bangkok.
The only member of the Wolfpack who’s not content is Alan (Zach Galifianakis). Still lacking a sense of purpose, the group’s black sheep has ditched his meds and given in to his natural impulses in a big way—which, for Alan, means no boundaries, no filters and no judgment—until a personal crisis forces him to finally seek the help he needs.

Principal photography is underway on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Hangover Part III,” the third and final film in director Todd Phillips’ record-shattering comedy franchise.
This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.
“The Hangover Part III” reunites Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha as Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug. Returning to the ensemble are Ken Jeong, Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor and, as the guys’ long-suffering wives, Gillian Vigman, Sasha Barrese and Jamie Chung. John Goodman joins the cast as well.
Phillips directs from a screenplay he wrote with Craig Mazin, who also collaborated with him on the screenplay for “The Hangover Part II.” Phillips is producing the film under his Green Hat Films banner, together with Dan Goldberg. Thomas Tull, Scott Budnick, Chris Bender and J.C. Spink are the executive producers.

Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker was voted the best edited feature film (drama) by the American Cinema Editors on Sunday night. Previously, The Hurt Locker won awards from the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, and the Art Directors Guild. James Cameron’s super blockbuster Avatar has thus far won only one guild award, for art direction in the "fantasy" category. Bob Murawski and Chris Innis were The Hurt Locker’s Eddie Award recipients for their tension-building work. Other motion picture Eddie Award winners were The Hangover (Debra Neil-Fisher) in the comedy or musical category, Up (Kevin Nolting) for animated feature, and The Cove (Geoffrey Richman) for best-edited documentary. First for a quick bit of news as IFC has made available the Oscar-nominated screenplay for In the Loop. Written by Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche, you can download the script in .Pdf format right here. I don't see it winning as I imagine Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner's script for Up in the Air will claim the Adapted Screenplay prize, but it is a fantastic lesson in how to write screen comedy with wit.
Next we move into the association awards, which should help fellow Oscar prognosticators predict the winners for the 2010 Oscars.

Stellar times for Star Trek….a Writers Guild nomination, a Producers Guild nomination and now this! But where are those Inglorious Basterds among the editors? One of the most interesting noms among the Ace’s lists is in the Documentary category – This Is It. Almost all but forgotten, except for those full-page Fyc ads of the Jackson rehearsal documentary in Variety. I’d love to see it as the big surprise Best Picture nominee on nomination morning. No film has won the Academy Award for Best Picture without also having received an Ace editing nom since “Ordinary People” in 1981.

As the nominations were unveiled Tuesday morning for the American Cinema Editors' 60th annual Ace Eddie Awards, this year's awards season is looking more and more like a Hollywood version of Comic-Con.
Just like the Art Directors Guild, the editors organization nominated "Avatar," "District 9" and "Star Trek."
Those three movies will compete for best edited dramatic feature film along with "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air."
Two Meryl Streep vehicles -- "Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated" -- were nominated in the best comedy or musical category along with "(500) Days of Summer," "The Hangover" and "A Serious Man."
For best animated film, the contenders are "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Up."
"This Is It," the Michael Jackson documentary, scored a slot in Ace's best documentary race alongside "The Cove" and "Food, Inc."
