Bonanza remains the second-longest-running American western TV series of all time. The show’s unique storylines and characters made it a success, but the memorable theme song also played a part in the series’ popularity. The Bonanza theme song that introduced each episode changed before and during the show’s run, with one version including lyrics written and sung by one of its stars, Lorne Greene.

Bonanza centered on the trials and tribulations of the Cartwright family, led by patriarch Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene), who lived on the Ponderosa ranch with his three sons: the educated engineer Adam (Pernell Roberts), the gentle giant Eric “Hoss” Cartwright (Dan Blocker), and the quick to anger “Little Joe” (Michael Landon). Bonanza and its cast members quickly became a fan favorites when the show aired on September 12, 1959. One of NBC‘s longest-running western TV series went on for 14 seasons and over 430 episodes. Although the stars of the series became popular, the music, specifically the Bonanza theme song, stole the show.
Its twangy rhythm distinctly marked the opening credits. While the tune changed throughout the 14 seasons the show aired, it was always recognizable.

Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are in the hunt for their third Best Original Song Oscar, for “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen II,” but there would be another noteworthy achievement on top of that potential victory. This marks the husband-and-wife songwriting duo’s third nomination, which means they could have a perfect 3-for-3 record in the category at the end of the season.
The Lopezes won on their first two bids for “Let It Go” from “Frozen” (2013) and “Remember Me” from “Coco” (2017) — wins that made Robert, then 39, the youngest and fastest (in 10 years) to Egot and the first double EGOTer. They share a 2-for-2 record at the moment with Giorgio Moroder, who prevailed for “Flashdance… What a Feeling” from “Flashdance” (1983) and “Take My Breath Away” from “Top Gun” (1986).
No one has been able to remain undefeated at three nominations or more. Should they walk away with the gold again, the Lopezes would join Tim Rice,...

Doris Day may have died with a reputation of being Hollywood’s most scrubbed-clean and wholesome girl-next-door type. But she made it to the big screen courtesy her warmly simmering and easily quavering vocal tones. Before films beckoned, she was a featured vocalist with big band-era kings such as Bob Crosby (Bing’s brother) and Les Brown and His Band of Renown, the latter of which recorded Day sunnily crooning “Sentimental Journey” and “My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time.”
While both ballads made her the toast of radio fans and World War II vets coming home from the battlefront in 1945, Day had so much more to offer during her sadly abbreviated singing career — which included one album released in the 21st century, “My Heart,” and a host of previously unreleased songs she recorded with her composer-producer son, the late Terry Melcher.
Here are some signature smashes and cool surprises from Doris Day.

Shows about the misadventures of twentysomethings are a television staple, but the TBS breakout Search Party -- with its sly combination of suspenseful thrills and tons of character-driven laughs -- is in a class all its own.
Alia Shawkat, whose rising profile includes work on Arrested Development and Transparent, plays Dory, the face of this ragtag search party. Dory’s restlessness to do something meaningful with her life leads her to look for former schoolmate Chantal Witherbottom after happening on a missing person sign at the series outset. She winds up dragging her reluctant friends into the search: her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend Drew (Stranger Things’ John Reynolds), her aggressively vapid-seeming besties Portia (Meredith Hagner, of Younger and Strangers on Facebook Watch) and Elliott (John Early, of the Wet Hot American Summer Netflix series and High Maintenance), and her ex-boyfriend-turned-journalist Julian (Brandon Micheal Hall, who also stars on The Mayor).

There’s something about Peter Farrelly. The filmmaker, mostly known for feature comedies, is trying out a few new things this year.
Those shifts including separate moves into both television – where Farrelly and his brother Bob have rarely played – and dramatic film. At At&T’s Audience Network, Farrelly is behind the upcoming comedy “Loudermilk,” starring Ron Livingston as a cranky recovering alcoholic.
But Farrelly’s move into TV doesn’t mean he’s turning his back on the big screen. “I’m actually doing a film in the fall with Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali,” Farrelly told an audience at the Atx Television Festival, where “Loudermilk” was screening. “Green Book,” with Oscar winner Ali and Mortensen in the lead roles, is currently being prepped.
“It’s based on a thing that used to be called the ‘Negro Motorist’s Green Book,’ published from 1936 to 1966,” he said. “It was a...

Debbie Reynolds, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, was one of the last icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Throughout her nearly seven decade career, Reynolds made a name for herself as a triple-threat singer, dancer, and actor — with roles in big-screen MGM musicals and Broadway shows. She was also chart-topping recording artist and dynamic live performer, who toured the country for years as a night club entertainer.
Music was an inescapable part of Reynolds career. Here are 11 of her best musical moments.

In pacing, mood, and form, Certain Women is undoubtedly a Kelly Reichardt film (and we’re glad), but those who can make that distinction will be all the more likely to spot some incongruities. For one, it’s an omnibus film that takes the format and its possibilities very seriously, in turn giving its incidents an added tension – so it is when there’s simply less time to linger. It’s also set outside her beloved Oregon, a state she’s done more for than any working filmmaker, or perhaps just any filmmaker, period.
This became the crux of my interview with Reichardt, who I’d spoken to when her great (and perpetually under-appreciated) Night Moves opened in the spring of 2014. Now seated in a midtown hotel, we had a largely off-the-cuff conversation — short story: I wasn’t supposed to speak with her during the press day, so I just...

Republicans weren't the only ones who tuned into Thursday night's Gop debate. Joe Swanberg is 33. I don't know whether to be amazed by how high or low that number is. On one hand, that's ridiculously young for a filmmaker who broke out back in 2006 and 2007 with "Lol" and "Hannah Takes The Stairs" and has been absurdly prolific since then. On the other hand, though, the filmmaker who made his name -- and, depending on your generosity, made a genre -- chronicling the dramatically limited foibles of recent college graduates has reached the "thirtysomething" phase of his career. The erratic and misdirected youths at the center of Swanberg's earlier films have become the pesky nubiles who show up to make Swanberg's new leads feel either old or optimistically mature. It's a transition that has been in the works for a little while. Last year's Swanberg Sundance entry "Happy Christmas" featured the director and Melanie Lynskey as a grown-up, responsible couple whose house nearly...

Another year, another creeping sense of dissatisfaction with the standard awards program. Sure it’s important to celebrate the best of the best of the best in the usual categories, but it all becomes a bit stale when the Oscars will be the dozenth major body to denote a best actor or cinematographer or score. Instead, we offer this alternative: a look at the strongest work of the movie year through the lens of odd trends and pure randomness. To wit, a header image that features our task-master-in-chief Neil Miller wondering if he forgot to send out invitations to the gala (he didn’t). We’re repeating an award from last year because you demanded it, but 2013 gave us enough weird and wonderfulness to fill up a whole new ballot otherwise. “It’s still the same old story…” states a classic tune that became the theme of a classic Hollywood romantic flick (that’s Casablanca for you “geek-lings”). Well this new flick expands on another story from a flick that’s not quite as old. When Harry Met Sally from 1989 (really?) pondered whether men and women could remain good platonic pals without romance (you know, the love and the sex stuff) barging in. That answer (Spoiler Alert!): nope. Not gonna’ happen. Uh uh. But is that still the case? A brand new flick examines two friends that are a bit younger than Billy and Meg, and a bit more “working class”. And instead of the “Big Apple”, they’re in the “Windy City”. But most unlike the earlier pair, these two are Drinking Buddies, both off and on the job. Wha-?
You see, that’s because they both work at an independent brewery.

I’m a sucker for vintage sheet music, but most of my favorite examples are movie-related. I never realized how many songs were written as paeans to the city of Los Angeles and its way of life, or how great a role these songs played in the boosterism that made Southern California a sun-kissed Mecca for thousands of people in the early 20th century. City fathers were still pursuing that public-relations angle as late as 1959, when Oscar-winning tunesmiths Jay Livingston and Ray Evans composed a commissioned city song called “Angeltown.” All of that is documented in an eye-opening, lavishly designed volume called Songs in the Key of Los Angeles: Sheet Music from the Collection of the...

Los Angeles -- For a city that has argued for decades over what its official song ought to be, Los Angeles has never lacked for serious contenders.
Anyone who has spent time here knows the city already has at least one unofficial tune: Randy Newman's "I Love La" is played after every home game the Los Angeles Lakers or Dodgers win.
But have you heard Bing Crosby warble about how he once planned to "settle down and nevermore roam, and make the San Fernando Valley my home?" Or songwriter George G.W. Morgan's tuneful boast in 1876 that if you really wanted great wine, forget the fancy European stuff, just open a bottle of La's best and drink up.
Crosby's "San Fernando Valley," a hit in 1943, and Morgan's "The Wines of Los Angeles County" are just two of nearly 200 songs that promote, mystify, glamorize and, let's be honest, often exaggerate...

The film details the dark and dangerous relationship between Joe Gillis (Holden), a hack screenwriter yearning for success, and Norma Desmond (Swanson), a faded silent movie star who draws him into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen.
In preparing the film for its Blu-ray debut, Paramount’s restoration team secured a vintage print made at the time of release from the Library of Congress to view and study in order to present director Wilder’s original vision. Although none of the original nitrate materials survive,...

Tout est pardonné (eng: All is Forgiven)
Directed by Mia Hansen-Løve
Written by Mia Hansen-Løve
France, 2007
Watching with a critical eye, one will find Mia Hansen-Løve’s debut feature, Tout est pardonné, curiously out of focus; as in, it strongly lacks any. Although well-meaning and decorous, Tout est pardonné has too many points of interest that dull the overall impact of the film, making it less affecting than it should’ve been.
The story opens up in Vienna where Victor (Paul Blain), a shiftless French writer, is married to Annette (Marie-Christine Friedrich), his Austrian wife. Together, they have a six-year-old daughter named Pamela (Victoire Rousseau).
Unable to really communicate with either of them, especially Annette, Victor turns to drugs and is slowly consumed with an addiction, and at first, this seems to be the film’s raison d’être. We’re supposed to witness the spiraling effects of his drug...

Last month, we asked EW.com readers to help Paramount select the cover image for the new Sunset Boulevard Blu-ray. Director Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic about a haunting silent-era movie star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) who hungers for a great comeback arrives on Blu-ray for the first time on Nov. 6, and 59 percent of voters opted for the red version of an original movie poster, with Desmond lurking over hack screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) and his new girlfriend (Nancy Olson).
For my money, Sunset Boulevard remains the greatest Hollywood movie about itself ever made, a warped fun-house mirror of the...

Tony Martin Movies. (See previous post: “Tony Martin Singer Dies.” Photo: Tony Martin and Alice Faye in the 1938 20th Century Fox musical You Can’t Have Everything.) Following his discharge from the military, Tony Martin had a big hit with his rendition of Jay Livingston and Ray Evans’ "To Each His Own," a song that topped the charts (in various versions) in 1946. That was the year Olivia de Havilland starred in the hit melodrama To Each His Own at Paramount. Also in 1946, Martin had a cameo in the MGM musical extravaganza Till the Clouds Roll By. Yet, his next lead in a [...]...

Last Friday I threw my back out when I bent over to pick up my tooth.
I think that sentence bears repeating.
I threw my back out when I bent over to pick up my tooth.
No, this piece is not about the horrors of the advancing age or eroding health this event implies. I'll leave it to others to share tales of how their bodies, despite all dietary and aerobic regiments, are grinding to an inevitable halt. All I know is that while I was down there on our kitchen floor, now eye level with the $3,000 implant that decided it would rather spend time against the molding under the pantry door than embedded in the upper left quadrant of my mouth, the first thought that entered my mind was that I'll just get up and continue with my day. I had a lot to do. There was a script I had to finish.

Believe it or not, but there are still some people out there who haven’t seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2! I know this for a fact because my wife is desperate to see it and was thwarted in our attempt to go along to our local multiplex three weeks after our first son was born! She is however excited for this weekend, Potter mayhem strikes back as many cinemas across the UK are still showing it.
As a special treat, those of you who go and watch Potter 7.2 this weekend (Friday 30th September – Sunday 2nd October) will be entitled to come home with your very own limited edition animated poster. I’ve been sent one and I have to say it is rather awesome with the hologram flitting between Voldemort and Harry Potter.
I’ve placed a gif (remember those!) of the poster below and below...

If you live in Britain and you’re keen to avoid 3D screenings of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, then we’ve got the list of where you can see the film in 2D.
We've had a couple of people comment to us over the past week that, whilst they're keen to see Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows on its release tomorrow, they don't want to see it in 3D. Furthermore, they added that they were struggling to find a 2D screening of the film.
With that in mind, we've done a recce of British cinemas to try and come up with a list of the assorted picture houses in the UK that are screening the movie in 2D. And we're pleased to report that there's no shortage of them. (The results show that anyone who does want to see it in 2D will probably have little trouble doing so.

Before she was a screen goddess, Elizabeth Taylor was a 17-year-old girl writing love letters to a 22-year-old boy.
Taylor, who died last week at age 79, was apparently in love with William Pawley, the son of a former ambassador to Brazil, before she married her first husband, hotel heir Conrad Hilton, AP reports.
"I've never known this kind of love before -- it's so perfect and complete -- and mature," Taylor wrote to Pawley on...

When most people think of Leslie Nielsen, they think of spoofs such as Airplane! (1980), The Naked Gun (1988), Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995), and Wrongfully Accused (1998). Perhaps a little strangely, when I think of Leslie Nielsen, who died at the age of 84 from complications of pneumonia at a Ft. Lauderdale hospital on Sunday, the first thing that comes to mind is the older guy Debbie Reynolds pines for in Joseph Pevney's Tammy and the Bachelor (1957). It's while daydreaming of Nielsen that Reynolds sings Ray Evans and Jay Livingston's ballad "Tammy." Don't laugh. It's actually a charming romantic song. Else, I think of the spaceship commander J. J. Adams in Fred M. Wilcox's 1956 sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet, which features Walter Pidgeon as the off-kilter Dr. Edward Morbius, Anne Francis in a skimpy mini-skirt, Robby the Robot, and a still very much relevant message about the seeds [...]...

We’ve been getting very, very excited about Back to the Future coming back to the cinema and this morning, those lovely chaps at Universal have provided us with the list of which cinemas in the UK will be showing the movie.
If you didn’t know, Back to the Future has been completely remastered and to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary, Universal Studios are bringing it back to the cinema. We debuted the HD trailer for it a few weeks ago which you can see below. The movie looks better than ever and we highly recommend that you go and see it while it’s on the big screen.
We already knew that The Empire Leicester Square would be showing it (that’s where the premiere was 25 years ago and where we saw it a few weeks ago) and you can pre-book your tickets here. Now Universal Studios have...

Glad to see Ron Livingston doesn't have Berger's commitment issues. The 42-year-old actor, who just couldn't deal with Carrie Bradshaw's success on Sex and the City, married fellow thesp Rosemarie DeWitt last week, People reports. They tied the knot Nov. 2 in San Francisco after more than three years of dating. Livingston, best known for sticking it to the man in Office Space, fighting for his country in Band of Brothers and reluctantly taking the Goofy job in Swingers, met DeWitt on the set of the short-lived Fox series Standoff. DeWitt, who was one of Don Draper's pieces on the side in the first season of Mad Men, can now be found in The United States of Tara on...

Alan W. Livingston has passed away at age 91. Never heard of him? Neither had we - but any baby boomer owes him a great debt for a multifaceted career that played a vital role in how popular culture was defined in the last half of the twentieth century. Check out this list of credentials, as published in The Hollywood Reporter:
"Alan W. Livingston, who created the character of Bozo the Clown and signed the Beatles to a contract at Capitol Records during a long and multifaceted show business career, died Friday in Los Angeles. He was 91.
Livingston, who was married to actresses Betty Hutton and Nancy Olson, also produced NBC's "Bonanza"; wrote the 1951 pop hit "I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat" for Mel Blanc's Tweety Pie; signed and paired Frank Sinatra with bandleader Nelson Riddle during a low point in Sinatra's career; and served as president of the...

Livingston started out by writing children's albums at Capitol and created Bozo in 1946 for a popular series of storytelling record albums and illustrative read-along book sets.
As he moved up at Capitol, Livingston got a reluctant Sinatra to agree to a session with Riddle in 1953. The pair produced the classics "I've Got the World...
