Screen Media picked up the North American rights to Paul Weitz’s “Bel Canto,” the company announced Tuesday.
The film, which Weitz and Anthony Weintraub adapted from the best-selling 2001 novel by Ann Patchett, stars Julianne Moore as a famous American soprano who travels to South America in the 1990s to give a private concert at the birthday party of a wealthy Japanese industrialist (Ken Watanabe) — and then gets caught in a hostage situation.
The cast also includes Sebastian Koch, Christopher Lambert, Ryo Kase, Tenoch Huerta, and María Mercedes Coroy.

Opera star Renée Fleming contributes vocals to the film — whose story is based on the real-life hostage crisis at the Japanese embassy in Lima, Peru in 1996-97. Patchett’s book also inspired Jimmy López’ 2015 opera “Bel Canto” as well as a parody in the second season of the FX animated comedy “Archer.”
A national theatrical release is planned for September 2018.

Sound the Fargo reunion klaxon! For The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Jesse Plemons – star of Breaking Bad, Bridge of Spies and Black Mass – will reteam with actor/director and real-life girlfriend Kirsten Dunst for The Bell Jar, a new spin on Sylvia Plath’s literary classic of ’63.
There, Plemons will join Dakota Fanning, who landed the lead role of Esther Greenwood during the summer months. Meanwhile, Lenny Shepherd is the name of Plemons’ character, and we understand that production is expected to kick into gear early next year.
Acting as the directorial debut of Kirsten Dunst, there are precious few story details available for this new interpretation of The Bell Jar. That being said, we’re inclined to believed Dunst will remain fairly faithful to Plath’s novel, as opposed to churning out a modern redo of Larry Peerce’s own film adaptation from 1979.

Simon Baker will star in Sex and Death 101, Daniel Waters' dark comedy being produced by Cary Brokaw's Avenue Pictures and Sandbar Pictures. The story follows a man (Baker) whose life is upended by a mysterious e-mail containing the names of every woman he has had sex with and, eerily, every woman he will have sex with in the future. Avenue exec vp Aaron Craig Geller, who brought in the project, is serving as executive producer. A mid-May shoot in Vancouver is being targeted. Baker, repped by ICM and Untitled, last starred in the romantic comedy Something New, George A. Romero's Land of the Dead and in CBS' The Guardian. He next appears in The Devil Wears Prada.
Hilary Duff has committed to star in Miramax Films' comedy Outward Blonde, the company confirmed. The project, sold to the mini-major as a pitch by Kayla Alpert in June 2000, centers on a materialistic New York girl who gets sent on an Outward Bound program after she fails gym class. Blonde is out to directors. Francesca Silvestri of Moxie Pictures is producing for Miramax along with Lizzie Friedman. Duff's reps could not be reached for comment on the project. Duff is in front of the cameras on The Heart of Summer, opposite Rita Wilson, John Corbett and Rebecca De Mornay for New Line Cinema and FilmEngine. She next stars in A Cinderella Story for Warner Bros. Pictures and is developing a sitcom for CBS, marking her first post-Lizzie McGuire series effort. And while her feature film and TV career is going well, Duff has found success offscreen as well. Her debut music album, Metamorphosis, has sold north of 2 million copies. She is repped by Curtis Talent Management and attorney Michael Fuller at Barnes, Morris, Klein, Mark & Yorn.
