Fittingly titled Comic Relief, Singapore's Asian Film Archive's (Afa) ongoing retrospective of the iconic duo Wang Sha and Ye Feng brings John Lomar's and Shaw Brothers Studios' endearing “Crazy Bumpkins” quartet back to the big screen. 26 titles, 3 talks and a free exhibition celebrate years of belly-aching laughter, a then ‘soothing' balm, as curator Yeo Min Hui writes, in the wake of widespread anxieties during Hong Kong and Singapore's rapid city transformations in the 70s and 80s. 2 weekends since the retrospective's opening, 2 of the 4 “The Crazy Bumpkins” films have been screened, and 2 more to follow, as will a second review. While thus far, the comedy does serve to criticize the city's consumerist ideals, its moral logic consequently, and intriguingly struggles to detach from the allure of wealth, chance and a better life. This review examines the troubled psyches of the first 2 chapters: “The Crazy Bumpkins” (1974) & “Return of the Crazy...

Although this gruesome action drama with a touch of horror was a huge success after its premiere, “Flying Guillotine 2” the problematic official sequel directed by Cheng Kang and Hua Shan and starring Ti Lung didn’t get released till 1978. In the meantime, Jimmy Wang Yu was quick to follow up with his action packed but outrageous “Master of the Flying Guillotine” in 1976.

Among the most morally repugnant and vile aspects of the exploitation genre in the 1970s was the Rape-Revenge genre, a subset of films focusing on the prolonged, torturous rape of a female protagonist before doling out equally prolonged and vicious vengeance on the perpetrating forces that carried it out. Spearheaded by the likes of films such as the US entries “The Last House on the Left,” “I Spit on Your Grave” and the Italian efforts “Last Stop on the Night Train” and “The Last House on the Beach” among others, the genre made its way to Hong Kong where Dennis Yu produced his take with this underseen but highly effective gem.

“Infernal Affairs” is probably the best known of the undercover policeman subgenre, yet go back in 1981, Alex Cheung was also exploring the psychological trauma of undercover work in his award winning follow up to “Cops and Robbers” that would kick start this very theme. Somewhat lost in cinematic history with a very short filmography, his initial output at the formative beginnings of the new wave saw a director of promise that sadly never got to blossom into a more lengthier career. Indeed trying to find a trailer for this review was a fruitless task, which only emphasizes how forgotten these works have become.
Ah Chiu (Eddie Chan) has never really settled down until joining the police. Identified as a suitable candidate for undercover work, he jumps at the opportunity seeing it as excitement. Unable to tell his partner or family, he slowly finds himself alienated from them...

The integration of the Cat. III rating on the Hong Kong film industry in the late 1970s proved to be a real boon for filmmakers to delve into the exploitation realm already on display in America and Europe at the time. While Lau Hung-chuen’s celebrated possession/creature feature effort “Devil Fetus” might fall outside the sphere of influence and importance of some of its compatriots in the scene, there’s little else needed to see the fun of this bizarre and over-the-top ride.

Clowns were always creepy, but then Stephen King came along. In 1986, King published “It,” which introduced the world to seven scrappy kids nicknamed The Losers Club, who faced off against a child-killing, shape-shifting clown named Pennywise, an evil entity that was infesting their hometown of Derry, Maine. Derry had popped up in several King novels before “It,” including “Pet Cemetery” and the novella “The Body,” which served as the source material for the film “Stand By Me,” but it wasn’t until “It” that King fans really got to know the dark history and evil lurking in the sewers of the fictional Maine town.
With King’s mammoth novel sitting around 1,138 pages, the bloody details of Derry’s darkest days are fleshed out across multiple time periods. But, as with so many film adaptations of classic novels, not everything in the book makes the final cut. Even 1990’s “It” TV mini-series,...

Zoya has had quite the incredible two weeks.
Born on Monday, July 10, at the Philadelphia Zoo, the female Amur tiger cub was the only survivor in her litter of five; two of her siblings were stillborn, one died from an injury sustained by its mother and another suffered from a critical gastrointestinal issue.
Despite being a tiny miracle, Zoya was rejected by her mother, 10-year-old Koosaka — a behavior somewhat typical of first-time tiger moms. So the Philadelphia Zoo’s animal care team jumped in to raise her, bottle feeding her and keeping watch around the clock. However, something was missing — namely,...

You can tell it’s film noir — even the cabin cruiser has Venetian blinds. Ernest Hemingway’s favorite film adaptation of his work is this uncompromised story of a good man taking a criminal course on the high seas. John Garfield is again ‘one man alone’ against the system, and the moral quicksand all but swallows up Patricia Neal, Phyllis Thaxter and Wallace Ford.

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the most revered American filmmakers of the last 20 years in part because he’s so unclassifiable. Working in a range of genres while tackling subjects that skew from anger management to American capitalism, religion and porn, Anderson has built a filmography distinguished by its unpredictability — and the sheer originality he brings to each new effort. Beyond the stories that distinguish his movies are the many ways in which they immerse viewers in fully defined worlds.
Every Anderson movie is an absorbing experience loaded with strange, funny, and shocking moments, all of which speak to the agenda of an artist keen on pushing the medium beyond its most familiar forms.

Beloved character actress and national treasure Judy Greer would naturally apply the go big or go home mentality to her directorial debut.

Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, the highly anticipated documentary about the relationship between the late Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, debuted on HBO Saturday.
Billed as “an intimate portrait of Hollywood royalty in all its eccentricity,” the 95-minute film documented nearly a year of the Hollywood icon’s lives, — leading up to Reynolds 2015 acceptance of her Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, which Fisher presented.
It was an emotional project to watch, especially after the recent deaths of both women. Fisher, 60, died on Dec. 27 after suffering a heart attack during an 11-hour flight from London to Los Angeles four days prior.

The doc premieres tonight on HBO and, especially in light of both women's passing, proves equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming. Here are six of Bright Lights' most emotional moments:
1. "I'm going to stay onstage until I drop dead." The documentary's earliest scenes take place in the duo's shared compound as Debbie prepares to head off to one of her shows. A worried...

At the spa, you're not talking, and you're completely naked. I feel the most Korean that I ever feel, because it's my naked Korean body, in this Korean space.” —Andrew Ahn[1]Moving away from the whitewashed casting controversy of the Ghost in the Shell remake and its calls to replace Scarlett Johansson with an Asian actor, I’ve concluded that there is no need for an Asian-American cyborg, because we already have plenty. In interviews, Scarlett Johansson has described her character, The Major, as someone who is “removed from her sexuality,”[2] “not living a human [or] robotic existence,”[3] and “has no heart.” This list of traits also functions as a list of the three defining stereotypes of Asian-Americans in cinema. They kiss and undress, but never cross the lines or make a mess. They go through the motions of living but never experience joy, ecstasy, or devastation. Like cyborgs, they are human on the outside,...

Debbie Reynolds found herself caught in a widely publicized love triangle in the 1950s when her then-husband, singer Eddie Fisher, had an affair with their longtime friend, Elizabeth Taylor.
In 1958, Reynolds and Fisher were one of Hollywood's hottest couples, along with Taylor and her then-husband, producer Mike Todd. The couples were inseparable at the time, with Fisher serving as Todd’s best man and Reynolds being Taylor’s matron of honor.
That all changed in 1958 when Todd died in a plane crash. Taylor soon struck up a romance with Fisher, which led to Reynolds divorcing her husband in 1959, and Fisher and Taylor getting married that same year.

In July, Céline Dion revealed that she was working on a new album - and that one song penned by fellow Grammy winner Pink would pay tribute to her late husband René Angélil At the time, the 48-year-old singer said that fans should "get ready" for the emotional song. She wasn't kidding. The track - called "Recovering" - dropped Thursday, and one might want to have a box of tissues handy before listening. Dion's voice is restrained throughout the emotional ballad - accompanied only by a piano. Her voice quivers, and at times it sounds like she could cry at any moment.

SundanceTV’s “The A Word” tells a story of a family after their 5-year-old son Joe is diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Playing with that title, the show is doing an “A-word of the week” ahead of each episode. This week’s word is “adolescence,” which is highlighted in an IndieWire exclusive clip below.

While the show does center on the young boy and the struggles of autism, the show also pays attention to the entire family and their lives both related and not related to Joe. In this new clip ahead of tonight’s episode, Joe’s uncle Eddie (Greg McHugh) talks to Joe’s sister Rebecca (Molly Wright) — who has a new relationship with Luke (Thomas Gregory) — about the importance of feeling right about her decisions to have or not have sex, which...

Crazy has always tapped a main vein in horror films; if it didn’t we would be stuck watching films of people being pranked or wronged, who laugh it off and become dentists instead (with all due respect to Corbin Bernsen). Now, of particular interest to me is when the sins of the flesh meet that fracture of the mind; where the lascivious and the lurid tangle in sweaty, blood stained sheets. And 1982 coughed up a doozy (in character and content) with Night Warning, a tale of a very protective aunt who doesn’t want to see her nephew leave the nest.
Also known as Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (a cool title, but neither relate to the story at all), Night Warning was distributed by Comworld Pictures in early ’82 (but didn’t go wide until early ’83) and garnered some good reviews while passing by audiences. Why? Because it was just...

In its first weekend, Secret Life of Pets broke the record for the biggest-ever opening for an animated non-sequel, and it drew those massive audiences with frenetic, gag-filled, Looney Tunes-channeling entertainment. Another animal-led toon Secret Life recalls: Dumbo, specifically, the Pink Elephants on Parade hallucination sequence that unfolds after Dumbo and Timothy inadvertently become intoxicated on champagne. That Dumbo scene was an inspiration for Secret Life’s sausage factory scene. If you don’t want to know plot details of Secret Life of Pets, consider this your spoiler warning. The schlubby stray mutt Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet) and the pampered terrier Max (Louis C.K.) have not been getting along, caught in an “alpha dog” struggle after Max’s owner brings Duke home, and then constantly bickering when wild circumstances land both of them lost in the streets of Manhattan. But they finally bond over the discovery of Weiner Kingdom,...

No record of the history of techno is complete without a mention of the Belleville Three. Berlin may be have emerged as the genre’s unofficial capital for the last decade and a half of its history, but Detroit DJ/producers Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins are largely cited as its original pioneers.
Be that as it may, during an era in which techno’s popularity is at an all-time high, the Belleville Three have been somewhat removed from the conversation.
As we recently touched on in our Movement 2016 coverage, May, Atkins and Saunderson met as teenagers in the rural Detroit suburb of Belleville. For having taught the other two how to produce electronic music, Atkins is often referred to as “The Originator.” In addition, he’s credited for coining the term “techno” itself with the 1988 compilation Techno! Fighting off a 60’s sugar hangover of Disney singalongs and reluctant nannies, musicals took turns being either idealistic (Hair) or Good Book Wavin’ moralistic (Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar), and we called them Rock Musicals – the music (slightly more) hard hitting, the lyrics speaking to the issues of the day – spirituality, war – heady stuff (on paper). But who was giving the Devil his due? Where was a musical about the fun side of sin, temptation, sacrifice, and ill gained ecstasy? Where was the rock musical About rock and roll? And then, yay and verily, it did arrive on the world’s doorstep in a black bassinet, cackling and screaming, eager to please and ready to reign. Welcome to Phantom of the Paradise (1974). As a wise old Glam queen once said, “Life at last! Salutations from the other side!”
