They put erasers on pencils for a reason. With statues, it’s a little more complicated.
The Los Angeles Lakers said Monday that spelling errors on the Kobe Bryant statue unveiled last month outside the team’s arena will be corrected. No time frame was revealed for the changes.
German journalist André Voigt published his finds Sunday on X. They include spelling Toronto guard José Calderón as “Jose Calderson” and spelling former Laker Von Wafer as “Vom Wafer,” according to NBC Los Angeles.
The word “decision” is set in bronze as “decicion,” the station said.
The statue features Bryant’s index finger held aloft after his 81-point game in the Lakers’ 122-104 win against the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006. That total was second only to the 100 points Wilt Chamberlain scored in a 1962 NBA game.
The 19-foot statue of Bryant features the Toronto game’s scorecard.

1984’s Conan the Destroyer was an attempt to soften Arnold Schwarzenegger’s titular barbarian into a PG-rated fantasy film hero. The result was a movie that was only a middling success in theaters, being overshadowed by Arnold’s other big 1984 movie, James Cameron’s The Terminator. Conan the Destroyer proved to be the last time Arnie would play Robert E. Howard’s Cimmerian icon, and in the decades since its release the movie’s reputation has been pretty atrocious. Hardcore fans prefer John Millius’s darker, R-rated Conan the Barbarian to Richard Fleischer’s lighter, family friendly version which seemed to owe a lot more to eighties fantasy movies like The Beastmaster than Millius’s original. It’s a deeply silly film, and one of the cheapest Schwarzenegger’s films of the eighties, with him essentially forced into making this and the following year’s Red Sonja to fulfil a...

After his junior year at Kansas, basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain was ready to leave college to make some money. The NBA didn’t take players who left school early, so instead of playing competitively, Wilt joined the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters on a lengthy tour of Europe.
Seeing Wilt, one of the greatest players of all time, in a red, white, and-blue uniform, performing in a traveling basketball circus seems strange today. The decades that followed Wilt’s Globetrotter years have cast the great athlete in a narrow role: a killer,...

If the television universe had a better sense of poetry, Netflix’s three-part Bill Russell documentary and Showtime’s three-part Wilt Chamberlain documentary would have come out the same day. The Chamberlain doc would have gotten better ratings, but the Russell doc would have received better reviews, and then we would have discussed the relative merits of each type of success and come to the conclusion that judging either of them exclusively on that one measurement was reductive.
Instead, Sam Pollard’s Bill Russell: Legend premiered back in February, while Rob Ford and Christopher Dillon’s Goliath, about Chamberlain, will air through the rest of July on Showtime and associated platforms.
While the two documentaries about contenders for basketball greatest-of-all-time status are both solidly made examinations of their complicated subjects, neither is even the recent Goat when it comes to multi-parters about outspoken NBA centers. Steve James’ Bill Walton series for ESPN holds that crown.

Netflix is reportedly in talks to livestream a celebrity golf tournament slated to take place this fall in Las Vegas, which would be the streamer’s first foray into live sports.
The tournament will include celebrities from the Netflix Formula One series “Drive to Survive” and golfing documentary “Full Swing.” Sources told The Wall Street Journal that the talks are in the preliminary stages, and a spokesperson for Netflix declined to comment.
The potential move into live sports comes after Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos told a Ubs investor conference in December that the company had “not seen a profit path” to “renting big sports.” At the time, Sarandos said that the economics surrounding live sports are “built around the economics of pay television” and “dramatically more expensive” on streaming.

Religion of Sports and Showtime Sports are teaming up on “Goliath,” a new three-part docuseries examining the life, career and impact of basketball icon Wilt Chamberlain from his emergence on the national scene as a high schooler in the 1950s through his death in 1999.
“We are honored to team up with this group of talented filmmakers to bring the under-examined story of Wilt Chamberlain’s complex life to the masses,” Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza said in a statement. “Everybody knows Wilt for his legendary accomplishments on the basketball court — scoring 100 points in a game, averaging 50 points and 25 rebounds in a season — but there’s so much more to him than his stats. He was far ahead of his time in so many ways that will last infinitely longer than the numbers on a scoreboard.”

In many respects, Mick Jagger is the quintessential rock star. As the lead vocalist of the Rolling Stones, Jagger is the frontman for one of the most iconic rock bands of all time. And his status as a pop culture icon – and famous lothario – has only expanded from there. But one biographer made a bold claim about Jagger’s love life that might shock even the most devoted fans.

Netflix’s latest sports docuseries, “Bill Russell: Legend,” is sandwiched between its 10-part tennis series, “Break Point,” and its eight-part golf series, “Full Swing,” in a string of non-fiction programming demonstrating the streamer’s commitment to chronicling athletic excellence. Although there have been other docs made about Russell, a Boston Celtics legend who won 11 championships during his career, Netflix is calling this latest nonfiction film about the 6-foot-10-inch center the “definitive documentary.”

LeBron James became the most prolific scorer in pro basketball history on Tuesday.
With his 38,388th career point, James, aka the King, became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Los Angeles Lakers forward set the record in front a home crowd — which included Laker legend Abdul-Jabbar sitting courtside. James came into Tuesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder needing 36 points to break the record; he did so with a 15-foot step-back jumper with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Last November, HBO premiered Nelson George’s Say Hey, Willie Mays!, a sturdy documentary that explored the life of the baseball icon — including an underlying argument about Willie Mays’ role, or lack thereof, in the civil rights movement and how that shaped his public image.
George, one of our most prolific and deservedly acclaimed documentarians, has a key role as talking head in Bill Russell: Legend, a new Netflix two-parter from Sam Pollard (Citizen Ashe), one of the few filmmakers able to rival George’s steady output.
In Bill Russell: Legend, George doesn’t directly compare Mays and Russell, but sports documentary devotees will find the link to be irresistible. Exclusive: Scott Koondel’s Sox Entertainment has partnered with Jon Shapiro’s Ideal Entertainment to co-produce Big Men, a limited series docudrama about the NBA and its stars’ important roles in the civil rights movement.
Created by screenwriter Marc Cotter and Joe Bilella, Big Men captures the struggles and strides of the civil rights movement through the lens of two NBA icons, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. Their on-court rivalry played a pivotal role in lifting a fledgeling league into a national phenomenon only to be matched by their teamwork off the court in their fight against racial adversity to bridge a segregated America. The series is envisioned as telling the story over 16 episodes in two seasons.

Now we ain’t sayin’ he’s a bold fibber…Earlier this week, Kanye West stirred up a little controversy–oh, no, not that. Rather, he made the claim that Django Unchained was his idea, saying, that “[Quentin] and Jamie, they got the idea from me because the idea for Django, I pitched to Jamie Foxx and Quentin Tarantino as the video for ‘Gold Digger’… then Tarantino turned it into a film.” This, as we expected, is 100 false.
Quentin Tarantino has been open about his influences–but Kanye West is not on the same list as Sergio Leone and Brian DePalma. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week to promote his new book, Cinema Speculation, Quentin Tarantino shut down Kanye West’s claims. “There’s no truth to the idea that Kanye West came up with the idea of Django and then he told that to me, and I go,...

Quentin Tarantino visited “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Thursday to hawk his new book “Cinema Speculation,” to name-drop Claudia Cardinale within the first 30 seconds, to repeat the goofy “Dinosaur Walk” song he sings to his toddler son, and, ultimately, defend himself over claims about his Academy Award-winning film “Django Unchained.”
His book, an essay about favorite movies, also serves as something of an autobiography. While jawing with Jimmy Kimmel, he dished that his mother, Connie Zastoupil, used to date a number of sports celebrities. He mentioned Happy Hairston as who never took Qt to the movies, the same as a much more famous athlete, Wilt Chamberlain. Though the 13x NBA All-Star was, shall we say, notable for scoring on and off the court, the “Pulp Fiction” director claimed that Chamberlain and Tarantino’s mom were together for a few years and, while they were never exclusive, she was, for a spell,...

A version of this story about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Barack Obama first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar knows all about tough competition, but the basketball legend may be facing a fiercer foe than even Wilt Chamberlain or Julius Erving in this year’s Emmy race. And for that, he can thank the Outstanding Narrator category, which in its nine-year history has found an array of formidable voices going head-to-head: Sterling K. Bill Russell, the intimidating center who rejected layups and bigotry with equal authority while leading the Boston Celtics to pro basketball’s greatest dynasty, died Sunday, his family announced. He was 88.
Russell won five Most Valuable Player awards and the Celtics captured 11 NBA championships during his 13-year career, including eight in a row from 1959-66. His powerful adversary during the 1960s, Wilt Chamberlain, ended the streak by leading the Philadelphia 76ers to the league title.
The 7-foot-1 Chamberlain and the 6-foot-9 Russell met 142 times in an epic rivalry of big men that riveted basketball fans for a decade. His Celtics went 57-37 against Chamberlain’s teams during the regular season and owned a 29-20 advantage in the playoffs.

Exclusive: Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal wants the world to know about an overlooked star of the game, Lusia “Lucy” Harris, the woman Shaq calls “the greatest of all time.”
“She’s a power center. I’m a power center. She was dominant,” O’Neal tells Deadline about Harris. “For a long time she was denied the limelight, denied the sponsorships and denied the recognition she deserved.”
The Oscar-contending short documentary The Queen of Basketball, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, rescues Harris from an unjust obscurity. She won three straight national titles at tiny Delta State University in the 1970s, earned a silver medal at the 1976 Olympic Games, and in 1977 became the first woman officially drafted by an NBA team—the New Orleans Jazz. But she made her mark in an era when women’s basketball, and women’s sports in general, didn’t draw much attention.

Exclusive: Paul Lee’s independent studio wiip (Mare of Easttown) has optioned the rights to Gary M. Pomerantz’s bestselling nonfiction book Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn: The Saga of Two Families and The Making of Atlanta to adapt for television.
In Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn, Pomerantz traces five generations of two of Atlanta’s defining political family dynasties — the Allens, descending from slave owners, and the Dobbses, descending from slaves. These families produced the two most influential mayors of the modern South: Ivan Allen Jr. and Maynard Jackson Jr.
Through interviews and research, Pomerantz shows how the families rose to social, economic and political prominence but also demonstrates how their compelling lives paralleled the shifting relations between Atlanta’s blacks and whites, as the city grew to become the capital of the New South. It is a representative story of the transformation of a city and the entire South.

Betelgeuse is one of the brightest stars in the sky, with prime placement within the constellation of Orion. It takes 640 years for the light from the red supergiant to reach Earth, meaning that for humans, its starlight will burn on long after its death.
In a way, the same is true of certain people. There are some individuals whose light shines so brightly during life, that it can’t help but radiate after they’re gone, providing comfort and beauty that long outlasts their lifespan.
When Emmy nominations were announced July 13, among them was a nod for Jessica Walter, nominated in Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for her work as Malory Archer on Fxx’s long-running animated series “Archer.” It was the fifth Emmy nomination of her career — she won in 1975 for her work on “Amy Prentiss” — but the first for her memorable work on “Archer.” It came nearly four months...

As a writer, director, and professor of film at the University of Kansas, filmmaker Kevin Willmott has had a long and fruitful career. Willmott’s storytelling focus often centers on the Black experience in the United States and often from a historical and social perspective. “C.S.A The Confederate States of America” is a mockumentary about an alternate U.S. history, wherein the Confederacy won the American Civil War. “Jayhawkers” is a sports drama that follows the life of Wilt Chamberlain, and the 1956 Kansas Jayhawks basketball team, and “Destination Planet Negro” is a comedic sci-fi fantasy about African-American leaders in 1939 who respond to Jim Crow segregation by building a rocket to colonize Mars.

Does anyone remember Gus Rethwisch? If you don’t from this picture then you might need to brush up on your cinematic knowledge since despite his short part in The Running Man he was still a memorable character as Buzzsaw, one of the gladiators that went after Ben Richards and his companions. This is a guy that actually made Arnold Schwarzenegger look kind of on the smaller side, which wasn’t easy back in the day. Wilt Chamberlain and Andre the Giant could do the same thing, but on screen it was tough to make Arnold look like an average guy. Buzzsaw

Watch Kobe Bryant Drop Each of Those Remarkable 81 Points Against the Toronto Raptors in ’06 (Video)
Kobe Bryant spent much of his 1,346-game NBA career locked into what athletes call “the zone.” Never was that more true than on Jan. 22, 2006, when the Los Angeles Lakers legend scored 81 points in one game against the Toronto Raptors.
Thanks to YouTube, we can all relive that incredible performance today, when Bryant fans need a few minutes of good memories.
Due to the magic of editing, one only needs three minutes to cover those 48 minutes of brilliance, which resulted in the second-highest point total ever scored by an individual in a National Basketball Association game. Buckets-wise, Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point performance way back on March 2, 1962 is the only solo effort better than Bryant’s night 44 years later.
Watch Kobe score every single one of those incredible 81 points via the video above. The Lakers would go on to defeat the Raptors 122-104.
